We show that for smooth complex projective varieties the most general combinations of chern numbers that are invariant under the K-equivalence relation consist of the complex elliptic genera. Combined with a recent result of Totaro, we deduce that up to complex cobordism any K-equivalence can be decomposed into a sequence of classical flops.
A complete classification is presented of elliptic and K3 fibrations birational to certain mildly singular complex Fano 3-folds. Detailed proofs are given for one example case, namely that of a general hypersurface X of degree 30 in weighted P^4 with weights 1,4,5,6,15; but our methods apply more generally. For constructing birational maps from X to elliptic and K3 fibrations we use Kawamata blowups and Mori theory to compute anticanonical rings; to exclude other possible fibrations we make a close examination of the strictly canonical singularities of (X,(1/n)H), where H is the linear system …
In this paper we consider moduli spaces of coherent systems on an elliptic curve. We compute their Hodge polynomials and determine their birational types in some cases. Moreover we prove that certain moduli spaces of coherent systems are isomorphic. This last result uses the Fourier-Mukai transform of coherent systems introduced by Hernández Ruiperez and Tejero Prieto.
In this paper we define a Poisson structure on some moduli spaces related to principal G-bundles on elliptic curves, the simplest example being the moduli space of stable pairs: a vector bundle and its global section. We also study birational morphisms between projective spaces appearing as such moduli spaces.
The theorem referred to in the title is a technical result that is needed for the classification of elliptic and K3 fibrations birational to Fano 3-fold hypersurfaces in weighted projective space. We present a complete proof of the Curve Exclusion Theorem, which first appeared in the author's unpublished PhD thesis [Ry02] and has since been relied upon in solutions to many cases of the fibration classification problem. We give examples of these solutions and discuss them briefly.
We prove that there are finitely many families, up to isomorphism in codimension one, of elliptic Calabi-Yau manifolds $Y\rightarrow X$ with a rational section, provided that $\dim(Y)\leq 5$ and $Y$ is not of product-type. As a consequence, we obtain that there are finitely many possibilities for the Hodge diamond of such manifolds. The result follows from log birational boundedness of klt pairs $(X, Δ)$ with $K_X+Δ$ numerically trivial and not of product-type, in dimension at most $4$.
Some Weyl group acts on a family of rational varieties obtained by successive blow-ups at $m$ ($m\geq n+2$) points in the projective space $\mpp^n(\mc)$. In this paper we study the case where all the points of blow-ups lie on a certain elliptic curve in $\mpp^n$. Investigating the action of Weyl group on the Picard groups on the elliptic curve and on rational varieties, we show that the action on the parameters can be written as a group of linear transformations on the $(m+1)$-st power of a torus.
Assuming the finiteness of the Shafarevich-Tate group of elliptic curves over number fields we make several observations on the birational Grotendieck anabelian setion conjecture. We prove that the birational setion conjecture for curves over number fields can be reduced to the case of elliptic curves. In this case we prove that, as a consequence of a result of Stoll, a section of the exact sequence of the absolute Galois group of an elliptic curve over a number field arises from a rational point if and only if the induced section of the corresponding (geometrically abelianised) arithmetic fun…
We observe that O'Grady's birational maps between moduli of sheaves on an elliptic K3 surface can be interpreted as intermediate wall-crossing (wall-hitting) transformations at the so-called totally semistable walls, studied by Bayer and Macrì. As an ingredient to prove this observation, we describe the first totally semistable wall for ideal sheaves of $n$ points on the elliptic K3. We then use this observation to make a remark on Marian and Oprea's strange duality.
We study the existence and properties of birationally equivalent models for elliptically fibered varieties. In particular these have either the structure of Mori fiber spaces or, assuming some standard conjectures, minimal models with a Zariski decomposition compatible with the elliptic fibration. We prove relations between the birational invariants of the elliptically fibered variety, the base of the fibration and of its Jacobian.
We study the Fourier--Mukai numbers of rational elliptic surfaces. As its application, we give an example of a pair of minimal 3-folds with Kodaira dimensions 1, $h^1(\mc O)=h^2(\mc O)=0$ such that they are mutually derived equivalent, deformation equivalent, but not birationally equivalent. It also supplies a counterexample of the birational Torelli problem.
We study automorphism groups and birational automorphism groups of compact complex surfaces. We show that the automorphism group of such surface $X$ is always Jordan, and the birational automorphism group is Jordan unless $X$ is birational to a product of an elliptic and a rational curve.
We discuss the birational geometry and the Kodaira dimension of certain varieties previously constructed by Schreieder, proving that in any dimension they admit an elliptic fibration and they are not of general type. The $l$-dimensional variety $Y_n^l$, which is the quotient of the product of a certain curve $C_n$ by itself $l$ times by a group $G\simeq\left(\mathbb{Z}/n\mathbb{Z}\right)^{l-1}$ of automorphisms, was constructed by Schreieder to obtain varieties with prescribed Hodge numbers. If $n=3^c$ Schreieder constructed an explicit smooth birational model of it, and Flapan proved: the Kod…
We classify birational maps into elliptic fibrations of a general quasismooth hypersurface in $\mathbb{P}(1,a_{1},a_{2},a_{3},a_{4})$ of degree $\sum_{i=1}^{4}a_{i}$ that has terminal singularities.
We prove the generic injectivity of the Prym map, sending a double covering of an elliptic curve ramified at r>4 points to its polarized Prym variety. For r=6 the map is birational.
We describe the birational correspondences, induced by the Fourier-Mukai functor, between moduli spaces of semistable sheaves on elliptic surfaces with sections, using the notion of $P$-stability in the derived category. We give explicit conditions to determine whether these correspondences are isomorphisms. This is indeed not true in general and we describe the cases where the birational maps are Mukai flops. Moreover, this construction provides examples of new compactifications of the moduli spaces of vector bundles via sheaves with torsion and via complexes. We finally get for any fixed dim…
We study the group of birational transformations of the plane that fix (each point of) a curve of geometric genus 1. A precise description of the finite elements is given; it is shown in particular that the order is at most 6, and that if the group contains a non-trivial torsion, the fixed curve is the image of a smooth cubic by a birational transformation of the plane. We show that for a smooth cubic, the group is generated by its elements of degree 3, and prove that it contains a free product of Z/2Z, indexed by the points of the curve.
We classify elliptic fibrations birational to a nonsingular, minimal cubic surface over a field of characteristic zero. Our proof is adapted to provide computational techniques for the analysis of such fibrations, and we describe an implementation of this analysis in computer algebra.
Mutations of the cluster variables generating the cluster algebra of type $A^{(2)}_2$ reduce to a two-dimensional discrete integrable system given by a quartic birational map. The invariant curve of the map is a singular quartic curve, and its resolution of the singularity induces a discrete integrable system on a conic governed by a cubic birational map conjugate to the cluster mutations of type $A^{(2)}_2$. Moreover, it is shown that the conic is also the invariant curve of the quadratic birational map arising from the cluster mutations of type $A^{(1)}_1$ and the two birational maps on the …
We study F-theory compactifications with U(1)xU(1) gauge symmetry on elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau manifolds with a rank two Mordell-Weil group. We find that the natural presentation of an elliptic curve E with two rational points and a zero point is the generic Calabi-Yau onefold in dP_2. We determine the birational map to its Tate and Weierstrass form and the coordinates of the two rational points in Weierstrass form. We discuss its resolved elliptic fibrations over a general base B and classify them in the case of B=P^2. A thorough analysis of the generic codimension two singularities of …
We study families of elliptic curves of degree n+1 in $P^n$ containing a fixed set of m points. In the case m = n+3 we show that this family is birationally isomorphic to a smooth complete intersection of n-2 diagonal quadrics in $P^{n+2}$. We also describe an action of the 2-elementary abelian group $2^{n+2}$ on this family via Cremona transformations in $P^n$.
We prove that up to birational equivalence, there exists only a finite number of families of Calabi-Yau threefolds (i.e. a threefold with trivial canonical class and factorial terminal singularities) which have an elliptic fibration to a rational surface. This strengthens a result of B. Hunt that there are only a finite number of possible Euler characteristics for such threefolds.
We show that elliptic classes introduced in our earlier paper for spaces with infinite fundamental groups yield Novikov's type higher elliptic genera which are invariants of K-equivalence. This include, as a special case, the birational invariance of higher Todd classes studied recently by J.Rosenberg and J.Block-S.Weinberger. We also prove the modular properties of these genera, show that they satisfy a McKay correspondence, and consider their twist by discrete torsion.
We study birational transformations into elliptic fibrations and birational automorphisms of quasismooth anticanonically embedded weighted Fano 3-fold hypersurfaces having terminal singularities classified by A.R. Iano-Fletcher, J. Johnson, J. Kollar, and M. Reid.
The Cremona group is the group of birational transformations of the complex projective plane. In this paper we classify its subgroups that consist only of elliptic elements using elementary model theory. This yields in particular a description of the structure of torsion subgroups. As an appliction, we prove the Tits alternative for arbitrary subgroups of the Cremona group, generalizing a result of Cantat. We also describe solvable subgroups of the Cremona group and their derived length, refining results from Déserti.
We prove non-rationality and birational super-rigidity of a Q-factorial double cover X of P^3 ramified along a sextic surface with at most simple double points. We also show that the condition #|Sing(X)| < 15 implies Q-factoriality of X. In particular, every double cover of P^3 with at most 14 simple double points is non-rational and not birationally isomorphic to a conic bundle. All the birational transformations of X into elliptic fibrations and into Fano 3-folds with canonical singularities are classified. We consider some relevant problems over fields of finite characteristic. When X is de…
We show that any commutative rationally ruled surface with a choice of anticanonical curve admits a 1-parameter family of noncommutative deformations parametrized by the Jacobian of the anticanonical curve, and show that many standard facts from commutative geometry (blowups commute, Quot schemes are projective, etc.) carry over. The key new tool in studying these deformations is a relatively simple description of their derived categories and the relevant t-structures; this also allows us to establish nontrivial derived equivalences for deformations of elliptic surfaces. We also establish that…
For a smooth cubic fourfold Y, we study the moduli space M of semistable objects of Mukai vector $2λ_1+2λ_2$ in the Kuznetsov component of Y. We show that with a certain choice of stability conditions, M admits a symplectic resolution $\tilde M$, which is a smooth projective hyperkähler manifold, deformation equivalent to the 10-dimensional examples constructed by O'Grady. As applications, we show that a birational model of $\tilde M$ provides a hyperkähler compactification of the twisted family of intermediate Jacobians associated to Y. This generalizes the previous result of Voisin arXiv:161…
We show that the number of birational automorphisms of a variety of general type X is bounded by c \cdot \vol(X,K_X), where c is a constant which only depends on the dimension of X.
We will show that there is a smooth complex projective surface, birational to some Enriques surface, such that the automorphism group is discrete but not finitely generated.
Two birational projective varieties in $P^n$ are Cremona Equivalent if there is a birational modification of $P^n$ mapping one onto the other. The minimal Cremona degree of $X\subset P^n$ is the minimal integer among all degrees of varieties that are Cremona Equivalent to $X$. The Cremona Equivalence and the minimal Cremona degree is well understood for subvarieties of codimension at least $2$ while both are in general very subtle questions for divisors. In this note I compute the minimal Cremona degree of quartic surfaces in $P^3$. This allows me to show that any quartic surface of elliptic r…
In this note we introduce generalised pairs from the perspective of the evolution of the notion of space in birational algebraic geometry. We describe some applications of generalised pairs in recent years and then mention a few open problems.
Via wall-crossing, we study the birational geometry of Beauville-Mukai systems on K3 surfaces with Picard rank one. We show that there is a class of walls which are always present in the movable cones of Beauville-Mukai systems. We give a complete description of the birational geometry of rank two Beauville-Mukai systems when the genus of the surface is small.
This article contains the notes of a graduate course on birational geometry focusing on the minimal model program. Topics covered include singularities, vanishing, nonvanishing, cone and contraction, base point freeness, finite generation, flips, termination, minimal models and Mori fibre spaces.
Let $X$ be a complex smooth projective threefold of general type. Assume $q(X)>0$. We show that the $m$-canonical map of $X$ is birational for all $m\geq 5$.
A conjecture of Pukhlikov states that a smooth Fano variety of dimension at least four and index one is birationally rigid. We show that a general member of the linear system given by the ample generator of the Picard group of the moduli space of stable, rank two bundles with fixed determinant of odd degree on a curve of genus at least three, is not birationally rigid.
This is a sequal paper to math.AG/9909021. By using the theory of AZD originated by the author, I prove that for every smooth projective $n$-fold $X$ of general type and every \[ m\geq \lceil\sum_{\ell =1}^{n}\sqrt[\ell]{2} \ell\rceil +1, \] $\mid mK_{X}\mid$ gives a birational rational map from $X$ into a projective space, unless it has a nontrivial (relative dimension is positive) rational fiber space structure whose general fiber is birational to a variety of relatively low degree in a projective space.
Lecture notes of a course on birational geometry (taught at College de France, Winter 2011, with the support of Fondation Sciences Mathématiques de Paris). Topics covered: introduction into the subject, contractions and extremal rays, pairs and singularities, Kodaira dimension, minimal model program, cone and contraction, vanishing, base point freeness, flips and local finite generation, pl flips and extension theorems, existence of minimal models and Mori fibre spaces, global finite generation, etc.
Let $V$ be a complex nonsingular projective 3-fold of general type. We prove $P_{12}(V):=\text{dim} H^0(V, 12K_V)>0$ and $P_{m_0}(V)>1$ for some positive integer $m_0\leq 24$. A direct consequence is the birationality of the pluricanonical map $φ_m$ for all $m\geq 126$. Besides, the canonical volume $\text{Vol}(V)$ has a universal lower bound $ν(3)\geq \frac{1}{63\cdot 126^2}$.
There is two group actions on the Fano scheme of lines such that the quotient becomes an irreducible symplectic manifold. We showed that both quotients are birational to the generalized Kummer variety or the 2-points Hilbert scheme of a K3 surface.
A generically generated vector bundle on a smooth projective variety yields a rational map to a Grassmannian, called Kodaira map. We answer a previous question, raised by the asymptotic behaviour of such maps, giving rise to a birational characterization of abelian varieties. In particular we prove that, under the conjectures of the Minimal Model Program, a smooth projective variety is birational to an abelian variety if and only if it has Kodaira dimension 0 and some symmetric power of its cotangent sheaf is generically generated by its global sections.
We study the birational geometry of the moduli space of complete $n$-quadrics $X$. We exhibit generators for Eff$(X)$ and Nef$(X)$, the cone of effective divisors and the cone of nef divisors, respectively. As a corollary X is a Mori Dream space. Furthermore, we run the MMP on $X$ and find a moduli interpretation for the models induced by the generators of the nef cone. In the case of complete quadric surfaces, we describe all the birational models of $X$ induced by the movable cone and find a moduli interpretation for some of these models.
We study the birational geometry of $\bar{M}_{3,1}$ and $\bar{M}_{4,1}$. In particular, we pose a pointed analogue of the Slope Conjecture and prove it in these low-genus cases. Using variation of GIT, we construct birational contractions of these spaces in which certain divisors of interest -- the pointed Brill-Noether divisors -- are contracted. As a consequence, we see that these pointed Brill-Noether divisors generate extremal rays of the effective cones for these spaces.
Varieties fibered into del Pezzo surfaces form a class of possible outputs of the minimal model program. It is known that del Pezzo fibrations of degrees $1$ and $2$ over the projective line with smooth total space satisfying the so-called $K^2$-condition are birationally rigid: their Mori fibre space structure is unique. This implies that they are not birational to any Fano varieties, conic bundles or other del Pezzo fibrations. In particular, they are irrational. The families of del Pezzo fibrations with smooth total space of degree $2$ are rather special, as for "most" families a general de…
We introduce and study the question how can stable birational types vary in a smooth proper family. Our starting point is the specialization for stable birational types of Nicaise and the author and our emphasis is on stable birational types of hypersurfaces. Building up on the work of Totaro and Schreieder on stable irrationality of hypersurfaces of high degree, we show that smooth Fano hypersurfaces of large degree over a field of characteristic zero are in general not stably birational to each other. In the appendix Claire Voisin proves a similar result in a different setting using the Chow…
We prove functorial weak factorization of projective birational morphisms of regular quasi-excellent schemes in characteristic 0 broadly based on the existing line of proof for varieties. From this general functorial statement we deduce factorization results for algebraic stacks, formal schemes, complex analytic germs, Berkovich analytic and rigid analytic spaces.
Using the techniques of Bayer--Macrì, we determine the walls in the movable cone of the Mukai system of rank two for a general K3 surface $S$ of genus two. We study the (essentially unique) birational map to $S^{[5]}$ and decompose it into a sequence of flops. We give an interpretation of the exceptional loci in terms of Brill--Noether loci.
Let $X$ be a smooth projective $n$-fold such that $q(X)=0$ and $L$ a globally generated, big line bundle on $X$ such that $h^0(K_X+(n-2)L) >0$. We give necessary and sufficient conditions for the adjoint systems $|K_X+kL|$ to be birational for $k \geq n-1$. In particular, for Calabi-Yau $n$-folds we generalize and prove parts of a conjecture of Gallego and Purnaprajna.
The notion of d-critical loci was introduced by Joyce in order to give classical shadows of $(-1)$-shifted symplectic derived schemes. In this paper, we discuss birational geometry for d-critical loci, by introducing notions such as `d-critical flips', `d-critical flops', etc. They are not birational maps of the underlying spaces, but rather should be understood as virtual birational maps. We show that several wall-crossing phenomena of moduli spaces of stable objects on Calabi-Yau 3-folds are described in terms of d-critical birational geometry. Among them, we show that wall-crossing diagrams…
In this paper we generalize some classical birational transformations to the non-commutative case. In particular we show that 3-dimensional quadratic Sklyanin algebras (non-commutative projective planes) and 3-dimensional cubic Sklyanin algebras (non-commutative quadrics) have the same function field. In the same vein we construct and analogue of the Cremona transform for non-commutative projective planes.
We show that the graded Chow rings of two birational irreducible symplectic varieties are isomorphic. This lifts a result known for the cohomology algebras to the level of Chow rings, despite the non-injectivity the cycle class map. In the special case of general Mukai flops, we present an alternative approach based on explicit calculations.
We study transformations as in the title with emphasis on those having smooth connected base locus, called "special". In particular, we classify all special quadratic birational maps into a quadric hypersurface whose inverse is given by quadratic forms by showing that there are only four examples having general hyperplane sections of Severi varieties as base loci.
Nonsingular projective 3-folds $V$ of general type can be naturally classified into 18 families according to the {\it pluricanonical section index} $δ(V):=\text{min}\{m|P_m\geq 2\}$ since $1\leq δ(V)\leq 18$ due to our previous series (I, II). Based on our further classification to 3-folds with $δ(V)\geq 13$ and an intensive geometrical investigation to those with $δ(V)\leq 12$, we prove that $\text{Vol}(V) \geq \frac{1}{1680}$ and that the pluricanonical map $Φ_{m}$ is birational for all $m \geq 61$, which greatly improves known results. An optimal birationality of $Φ_m$ for the case $δ(V)=2$…
Varieties of Sums of Powers describe the additive decompositions of an homogeneous polynomial into powers of linear forms. Despite their long history, going back to Sylvester and Hilbert, few of them are known for special degrees and number of variables. In this paper we aim to understand a general birational behaviour of VSP, if any. To do this we birationally embed these varieties into Grassmannians and prove the rationality, unirationality or rational connectedness of many of those in arbitrary degrees and number of variables.
