We take the fundamental group of the complement of the branch curve of a generic projection induced from canonical embedding of a surface. This group is stable on connected components of moduli spaces of surfaces. Since for many classes of surfaces it is expected that the fundamental group has a polycyclic structure, we define a new invariant that comes from this structure. We compute this invariant for a few examples. Braid monodromy factorizations related to curves is a first step in computing the fundamental group of the complement of the curve, and thus we also indicate the possibility of using braid monodromy factorizations of branch curves as an invariant of a surface.
In this note, we will show that delta invariant of a log Fano pair can be approximated by lc places of complements of plt type if it is no greater than one. Give a log Fano pair with delta invariant no greater than one, under the assumption that delta invariant of the log Fano pair can be approximated by lc places of bounded complements of plt type, we show the existence of the divisorial valuation computing delta invariant of this log Fano pair.
We show that fixed dimensional klt weak Fano pairs with alpha-invariants and volumes bounded away from $0$ and the coefficients of the boundaries belonging to a fixed DCC set $S$ form a bounded family. Moreover, such pairs admit a strong $ε$-lc $\mathbb{R}$-complement for some fixed $ε>0$.
More strong version of the main inductive theorem about the complements on surfaces is proved and the models of exceptional log del Pezzo surfaces with $δ=0$ are constructed
In this paper the log surfaces without $\QQ$-complement are classified. In particular, they are non-rational always. This result takes off the restriction in the theory of complements and allows one to apply it in the most wide class of log surfaces.
We prove a conjecture due to V.V. Shokurov on the boundedness of $ε$-log canonical complements on surfaces. As an application we give a new proof to the boundedness of weak log Fano surfaces.
We use the Krammer representation of the braid group in Libgober's invariant and construct a new multivariate polynomial invariant for curve complements: Krammer polynomial. We show that the Krammer polynomial of an essential braid is equal to zero. We also compute the Krammer polynomials of some certain n-gonal curves.
Introducing the notion of stabilized fundamental group for the complement of a branch curve in $CP^2$, we define effectively computable invariants of symplectic 4-manifolds that generalize those previously introduced by Moishezon and Teicher for complex projective surfaces. Moreover, we study the structure of these invariants and formulate conjectures supported by calculations on new examples.
This is an introduction to topology of complement to plane curves and hypersurfaces in the projective space and is based on the lectures given in Lumini in February and in ICTP (Trieste) in August of 2005. We discuss key problems concerning the families of singular curves, the one variable Alexander polynomials and the module over ring of Laurent polynomials structure on the homotopy groups of the complements to hypersurfaces with isolated singularities. We also discuss multivariable generalizations of these invariants and the Hodge theory of infinite abelian covers used in calculations of mul…
We classifiy Enriques surfaces covered by the supersingular K3 surface with the Artin invariant 1 in characteristic 2. There are exactly three types of such Enriques surfaces.
F. Block and L. Göttsche introduced refined tropical invariants of toric surfaces that intertwine tropical Gromov-Witten and Welschinger invariants of toric surfaces. L. Göttsche and the first author introduced refined broccoli invariants that intertwine some genus zero descendant tropical invariants and broccoli invariants of toric surfaces. In this note, we extend the refined broccoli invariants to the genus one case.
The paper investigates invariants of compactified Picard modular surfaces by principal congruence subgroups of Picard modular groups. The applications to the surface classification and modular forms are discussed.
We report on the computation of invariants, covariants, and contravariants of cubic surfaces. All algorithms are implemented in the computer algebra system magma.
We define a categorical birational invariant for minimal geometrically rational surfaces with a conic bundle structure over a perfect field via components of a natural semiorthogonal decomposition. Together with the similar known result on del Pezzo surfaces, this provides a categorical birational invariant for geometrically rational surfaces.
We estimate $δ$-invariants of some singular del Pezzo surfaces with quotient singularities, which we studied ten years ago. As a result, we show that each of these surfaces admits an orbifold Kähler--Einstein metric.
We start with a discussion on Alexander invariants, and then prove some general results concerning the divisibility of the Alexander polynomials and the supports of the Alexander modules, via Artin's vanishing theorem for perverse sheaves. We conclude with explicit computations of twisted cohomology following an idea already exploited in the hyperplane arrangement case, which combines the degeneration of the Hodge to de Rham spectral sequence to the purity of some cohomology groups.
We prove that the supersingular K3 surface of Artin invariant 1 in characteristic p (where p denotes an arbitrary prime) admits a model over IF_p with Picard number 21.
In characteristic $p=0$ or $p>5$, we show that a K3 surface with an order 60 automorphism is unique up to isomorphism. As a consequence, we characterize the supersingular K3 surface with Artin invariant 1 in characteristic $p=11$ (mod 12) by a cyclic symmetry of order 60.
We describe an algorithm for computing certain characteristic numbers of surface scrolls using degenerations. As a corollary we obtain a method for computing the corresponding Gromov-Witten invariants of Grassmannians.
We define a series of relative tropical Welschinger-type invariants of real toric surfaces. In the Del Pezzo case, these invariants can be seen as real tropical analogs of relative Gromov-Witten invariants, and are subject to a recursive formula. As application we obtain new formulas for Welschinger invariants of real toric Del Pezzo surfaces.
We provide a definition of Vafa-Witten invariants for projective surface Deligne-Mumford stacks, generalizing the construction of Tanaka-Thomas on the Vafa-Witten invariants for projective surfaces inspired by the S-duality conjecture. We give calculations for a root stack over a general type quintic surface, and quintic surfaces with ADE singularities. The relationship between the Vafa-Witten invariants of quintic surfaces with ADE singularities and the Vafa-Witten invariants of their crepant resolutions is also discussed.
In "Curves on Heisenberg invariant quartic surfaces in projective 3-space", Eklund showed that a general $(\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z})^{4}$-invariant quartic K3 surface contains at least $320$ conics. In this paper we analyse the field of definition of those conics as well as their Monodromy group. As a result, we prove that the moduli space $(\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z})^{4}$-invariant quartic K3 surface with a marked conic has $10$ irreducible components.
We give a 1-dimensional family of classical and supersingular Enriques surfaces in characteristic 2 covered by the supersingular K3 surface with Artin invariant 1. Moreover we show that there exist 30 nonsingular rational curves and ten non-effective (-2)-divisors on these Enriques surfaces whose reflection group is of finite index in the orthogonal group of the Neron-Severi lattice modulo torsion.
We construct explicitly moduli curves of polarized supersingular K3 surfaces in characteristic 2 with Artin invariant 2. As an application, we detect a "jump" phenomenon in a family of automorphism groups of supersingular K3 surfaces with a constant Néron-Severi lattice.
We present a method to construct non-singular cubic surfaces over $\bbQ$ with a Galois invariant pair of Steiner trihedra. We start with cubic surfaces in a form generalizing that of A. Cayley and G. Salmon. For these, we develop an explicit version of Galois descent.
A foliation is of toric type when it has a combinatorial reduction of singularities. We show that every toric type foliation on (C3, 0), without saddle-nodes, has invariant surface. We extend the argument of Cano-Cerveau, done for the nondicritical case, to the compact dicritical components of the exceptional divisor. These components are projective toric surfaces and the isolated invariant branches of the induced foliation extend to global curves. We build the invariant surface as a germ along the singular locus and those global invariant curves. The result of Ortiz-Rosales-Voronin, about the…
We compute the degree of the variety parametrizing rational ruled surfaces of degree d in the projective space by relating the problem to Gromov-Witten invariants and Quantum cohomology.
We formulate conjectural blowup formulas for Segre and Verlinde numbers on moduli spaces of sheaves on projective surfaces $S$ with $p_g(S)>0$ and $b_1(S)=0$. As applications we give a give a conjectural formula for the Donaldson invariants of $S$ in arbitrary rank, as well as for the $K$-theoretic Donaldson invariants, and some Donaldson invariants with fundamental matters.
The main result of the paper is a boundedness for $n$-complements on algebraic surfaces. In addition, applications of this theorem to a classification of log Del Pezzo surfaces and of birational contractions for 3-folds are formulated.
We introduce a conjecture on homological mirror symmetry relating the symplectic topology of the complement of a smooth ample divisor in a K3 surface to algebraic geometry of type III degenerations, and prove it when the degree of the divisor is either 2 or 4.
In this article we prove that every entire curve in the complement of a generic hypersurface of degree $d\geq 586$ in $\mathbb{P}_{\mathbb{C}}^{3}$ is algebraically degenerate i.e there exists a proper subvariety which contains the entire curve.
This paper will appear in the Santa Cruz proceedings. An overview of the braid group techniques in the theory of algebraic surfaces, from Zariski to the latest results, is presented. An outline of the Van Kampen algorithm for computing fundamental groups of complements of curves and the modification of Moishezon-Teicher regarding branch curves of generic projections are given. The paper also contains a description of a quotient of the braid group, namely $\tilde B_n$ which plays an important role in the description of fundamental groups of complements of branch curves. It turns out that all suc…
The usual Gromov-Witten invariants are zero for Kähler surfaces with $p_g\geq 1$. In this paper we use analytic methods to define Family Gromov-Witten Invariants for Kähler surfaces. We prove that these are well-defined invariants of the deformation class of the Kähler structure.
Using the degeneration formula for Donaldson-Thomas invariants, we proved a formula for the change of Donaldson-Thomas invariants of local surfaces under blowing up along points.
The paper is a contribution to the conjecture of Kobayashi that the complement of a generic curve in the projective plane is hyperbolic, provided the degree is at least five. Previously the authors treated the cases of two quadrics and a line and three quadrics. The main results are Let C be the union of three curves in P_2 whose degrees are at least two, one of which is at least three. Then for generic such configurations the complement of C is hyperbolic and hyperbolically embedded. The same statement holds for complements of curves in generic hypersurfaces X of degree at least five and curv…
In this paper, using the degeneration formula we obtain a blowup formulae of local Gromov-Witten invariants of Fano surfaces. This formula makes it possible to compute the local Gromov-Witten invariants of non-toric Fano surfaces form toric Fano surface, such as del Pezzo surfaces. This formula also verifed an expectation of Chiang-Klemm-Yau-Zaslow.
We compute local Gromov-Witten invariants of cubic surfaces at all genera. We use a deformation of a cubic surface to a nef toric surface and the deformation invariance of Gromov-Witten invariants.
We introduce a twisted version of the Kawazumi-Zhang invariant $a_g(C) = φ(C)$ of a compact Riemann surface $C$ of genus $g \geq 1$, and discuss how it is related to the first Mumford-Morita-Milller class $e_1 = κ_1$ on the moduli space of compact Riemann surfaces and the original Kawazumi-Zhang invariant.
In [LP] the authors defined symplectic "Local Gromov-Witten invariants" associated to spin curves and showed that the GW invariants of a Kahler surface X with p_g>0 are a sum of such local GW invariants. This paper describes how the local GW invariants arise from an obstruction bundle (in the sense of Taubes) over the space of stable maps into curves. Together with the results of [LP], this reduces the calculation of the GW invariants of complex surfaces to computations in the GW theory of curves.
We construct an invariant of parametrized generic real algebraic surfaces in RP^3 which generalizes the Brown invariant of immersed surfaces from smooth topology. The invariant is constructed using the self intersection, which is a real algebraic curve with points of three local characters: the intersection of two real sheets, the intersection of two complex conjugate sheets or a Whitney umbrella. The Brown invariant was expressed through a self linking number of the self intersection by Kirby and Melvin. We extend the definition of this self linking number to the case of parametrized generic …
In this paper we present the Braid Monodromy Type (BMT) of curves and surfaces; past, present and future. The BMT is an invariant that can distinguish between non-isotopic curves; between different families of surfaces of general type; between connected components of moduli space of surfaces and between non symplectmorphic 4-manifolds. BMT is a finer invariant than the Sieberg-Witten invariants. Consider 2 simply connected surfaces of general type with the same Chern classes. It is known that if they are in the same deformation class, they are diffeomorphic to each other. Are there computable …
In this paper, we study holomorphic discs in K3 surfaces and defined the open Gromov-Witten invariants. Using this new invariant, we can establish a version of correspondence between tropical discs and holomorphic discs with non-trivial invariants. We give an example of wall-crossing phenomenon of the invariant and expect it satisfies Kontsevich-Soibelman wall-crossing formula.
In the paper, we study the wall-crossing phenomenon of reduced open Gromov-Witten invariants on K3 surfaces with rigid special Lagrangian boundary condition. As a corollary, we derived the multiple cover formula for the reduced open Gromov-Witten invariants.
We produce an equality between the Gromov-Witten invariants of the moduli space M of rank two odd degree stable vector bundles over a Riemann surface $Σ$ and the Donaldson invariants of the algebraic surface $Σ\times P^1$. We discuss on to how extent the Quantum cohomology of M determines its Gromow-Witten invariants. Finally we find the isomorphism between the usual cohomology and the Quantum cohomology for the moduli space M over a Riemann surface of genus g=3.
We classify invariant curves for birational surface maps that are expanding on cohomology. When the expansion is exponential, the arithmetic genus of an invariant curve is at most one. This implies severe constraints on both the type and number of irreducible components of the curve. In the case of an invariant curve with genus equal to one, we show that there is an associated invariant meromorphic two form.
We study the class of complex algebraic K3 surfaces admitting an embedding of H+E8+E8 inside the Neron-Severi lattice. These special K3 surfaces are classified by a pair of modular invariants, in the same manner that elliptic curves over the field of complex numbers are classified by the J-invariant. Via the canonical Shioda-Inose structure we construct a geometric correspondence relating K3 surfaces of the above type with abelian surfaces realized as cartesian products of two elliptic curves. We then use this correspondence to determine explicit formulas for the modular invariants.
We prove new local inequality for divisors on surfaces and utilize it to compute $α$-invariants of singular del Pezzo surfaces, which implies that del Pezzo surfaces of degree one whose singular points are of type $\mathbb{A}_{1}$, $\mathbb{A}_{2}$, $\mathbb{A}_{3}$, $\mathbb{A}_{4}$, $\mathbb{A}_{5}$ or $\mathbb{A}_{6}$ are Kähler-Einstein.
