We study the class of complex algebraic K3 surfaces admitting an embedding of H+E8+E8 inside the Neron-Severi lattice. These special K3 surfaces are classified by a pair of modular invariants, in the same manner that elliptic curves over the field of complex numbers are classified by the J-invariant. Via the canonical Shioda-Inose structure we construct a geometric correspondence relating K3 surfaces of the above type with abelian surfaces realized as cartesian products of two elliptic curves. We then use this correspondence to determine explicit formulas for the modular invariants.
The goal of the present paper is two-fold. First, we present a classification of algebraic K3 surfaces polarized by the lattice H+E_8+E_7. Key ingredients for this classification are: a normal form for these lattice polarized K3 surfaces, a coarse moduli space and an explicit description of the inverse period map in terms of Siegel modular forms. Second, we give explicit formulas for a Hodge correspondence that relates these K3 surfaces to principally polarized abelian surfaces. The Hodge correspondence in question underlies a geometric two-isogeny of K3 surfaces.
In this paper we consider moduli spaces of polarized and numerically polarized Enriques surfaces. The moduli spaces of numerically polarized Enriques surfaces can be described as open subsets of orthogonal modular varieties of dimension 10. One of the consequences of our description is that there are only finitely many isomorphism classes of moduli spaces of polarized and numerically polarized Enriques surfaces. We use modular forms to prove for a number of small degrees that the Kodaira dimension of the moduli space of numerically polarized Enriques surfaces is negative. Finally we prove that…
Motivated by the S-duality conjecture, we study the Donaldson-Thomas invariants of the 2 dimensional Gieseker stable sheaves on a threefold. These sheaves are supported on the fibers of a nonsingular threefold X fibered over a nonsingular curve. In the case where X is a K3 fibration, we express these invariants in terms of the Euler characteristic of the Hilbert scheme of points on the K3 fiber and the Noether-Lefschetz numbers of the fibration. We prove that a certain generating function of these invariants is a vector modular form of weight -3/2 as predicted in S-duality.
The paper investigates invariants of compactified Picard modular surfaces by principal congruence subgroups of Picard modular groups. The applications to the surface classification and modular forms are discussed.
The space $D$ of Hodge structures on a fixed polarized lattice is known as Griffiths period domain and its quotient by the isometry group of the lattice is the moduli of polarized Hodge structures of a fixed type. When $D$ is a Hermition symmetric domain then we have automorphic forms on $D$, which according to Baily-Borel theorem, they give an algebraic structure to the mentioned moduli space. In this article we slightly modify this picture by considering the space $U$ of polarized lattices in a fixed complex vector space with a fixed Hodge filtration and polarization. It turns out that the i…
The modular invariants of a family of semistable curves are the degrees of the corresponding divisors on the image of the moduli map. The singularity indices were introduced by G. Xiao to classify singular fibers of hyperelliptic fibrations and to compute global invariants locally. In the semistable case, we show that the modular invariants corresponding with the boundary classes are just the singularity indices. As an application, we show that the formula of Xiao for relative Chern numbers is the same as that of Cornalba-Harris in the semistable case.
Modular invariants of families of curves are Arakelov invariants in arithmetic algebraic geometry. All the known uniform lower bounds of these invariants are not sharp. In this paper, we aim to give explicit lower bounds of modular invariants of families of curves, which is sharp for genus 2. According to the relation between fractional Dehn twists and modular invariants, we give the sharp lower bounds of fractional Dehn twist coefficients and classify pseudo-periodic maps with minimal coefficients for genus 2 and 3 firstly. We also obtain a rigidity property for families with minimal modular …
We study stable vector bundles over the modular curve X(p) corresponding to the principal congruence subgroup of the modular group of prime level p which are invariant with respect to its automorphism group.
The quantum modular invariant of a real number is defined as a discontinuous, PGL(2,Z)-invariant multi-valued map using the distance-to-the-nearest-integer function. On the rationals, the quantum modular invariant is shown to be infinity and for quadratic irrationalities PARI/GP experiments suggest it is a finite set. In the case of the golden mean, we produce explicit formulas involving weighted versions of the Rogers-Ramanujan functions for the experimental supremum and infimum of its quantum modular invariant. We then define a universal modular invariant as a continuous and single valued ma…
We use the description of the Picard modular surface for discriminant $-3$ as a moduli space of curves of genus $3$ to generate all vector-valued Picard modular forms from bi-covariants for the action of ${GL}_2$ on the space of pairs of binary forms of bidegree $(4,1)$. The universal binary forms of degree $4$ and $1$ correspond to a meromorphic modular form of weight $(4,-2)$ and a holomorphic Eisenstein series of weight $(1,1)$.
This is a survey based on the construction of Siegel modular forms of degree 2 and 3 using invariant theory in joint work with Fabien Cléry and Carel Faber.
We compute the Hochschild homology and cohomology, and cyclic homology, of almost Calabi-Yau algebras for SU(3) ADE graphs. These almost Calabi-Yau algebras are a higher rank analogue of the pre-projective algebras for Dynkin diagrams, which are SU(2)-related constructions. The Hochschild (co)homology and cyclic homology of A can be regarded as invariants for the braided subfactors associated to the SU(3) modular invariants.
The $E_8$ root lattice can be constructed from the modular curve $X(13)$ by the invariant theory for the simple group $\text{PSL}(2, 13)$. This gives a different construction of the $E_8$ root lattice. It also gives an explicit construction of the modular curve $X(13)$.
In this note, we establish a relationship between fractional Dehn twist coefficients of Riemann surface automorphisms and modular invariants of holomorphic families of algebraic curves. Specially, we give a characterization of pseudo-periodic maps with nontrivial fractional Dehn twist coefficients. We also obtain some uniform lower bounds of non-zero fractional Dehn twist coefficients.
Braided subfactors of von Neumann algebras provide a framework for studying two dimensional conformal field theories and their modular invariants. We review this in the context of SU(3) conformal field theories through corresponding SU(3) braided subfactors and various subfactor invariants including spectral measures for the nimrep graphs, A_2-planar algebras and almost Calabi-Yau algebras.
In this paper we study the maximal extension $Γ_t^*$ of the subgroup $Γ_t$ of $\operatorname{Sp}_4 (\bq)$ which is conjugate to the paramodular group. The index of this extension is $2^{ν(t)}$ where $ν(t)$ is the number of prime divisors of $t$. The group $Γ_t^*$ defines the minimal modular threefold ${\Cal A}_t^*$ which is a finite quotient of the moduli space ${\Cal A}_t$ of $(1,t)$-polarized abelian surfaces. A certain degree 2 quotient of ${\Cal A}_t$ is a moduli space of lattice polarized $K3$ surfaces. The space ${\Cal A}_t^*$ can be interpreted as the space of Kummer surfaces associated…
In this paper we produce a generating function for the number of hyperelliptic curves (up to translation) on a polarized Abelian surfaces using the crepant resolution conjecture and the Yau-Zaslow formula. We present a formula to compute these in terms of MacMahon's generalized sum-of-divisors functions, and prove that they are quasi-modular forms.
We determine the Nakayama automorphism of the almost Calabi-Yau algebra A associated to the braided subfactors or nimrep graphs associated to each SU(3) modular invariant. We use this to determine a resolution of A as an A-A bimodule, which will yield a projective resolution of A.
Let $X$ be a smooth polarized algebraic surface over the compex number field. We discuss the invariants obtained from the moduli stacks of semistable sheaves of arbitrary ranks on $X$. For that purpose, we construct the virtual fundamental classes of some moduli stacks, and we show the transition formula of the integrals over the moduli stacks of the $δ$-stable Bradlow pairs for the variation of the parameter $δ$. Then, we study the relation among the invariants. In the case $p_g>0$, we show that the invariants are independent of the choice of a polarization of $X$. We also show that the invar…
An invariant of a model of genus one curve is a polynomial in the coefficients of the model that is stable under certain linear transformations. The classical example of an invariant is the discriminant, which characterizes the singularity of models. The ring of invariants of genus one models over a field is generated by two elements. Fisher normalized these invariants for models of degree n=2,3,4 in such a way that these invariants are moreover defined over the integers. We provide an alternative way to express these normalized invariants using modular forms. This method relies on a direct co…
We give a geometric derivation of Schottky's equation in genus four for the period matrices of Riemann surfaces among all period matrices. The equation arises naturally from the singularity theory of the Gauss map on the theta divisor, and thus generalizes for any genus $g \ge 4$ to a certain ideal of Siegel modular forms vanishing on period matrices of Riemann surfaces. This ideal is generated by modular forms associated to the invariants of cubic forms in $g - 1$ variables which vanish on the Fermat cubic.
We study the Donaldson invariants of simply connected $4$-manifolds with $b_+=1$, and in particular the change of the invariants under wall-crossing. We assume the conjecture of Kotschick and Morgan about the shape of the wall-crossing terms (which Oszvath and Morgan are now able to prove), and are determine a generating function for the wall-crossing terms in terms of modular forms. As an application we determine all the Donaldson invariants of the projective plane in terms of modular forms. The main tool are the blowup formulas, which are used to obtain recursive relations.
This is a survey article about Siegel modular varieties over the complex numbers. It is written mostly from the point of view of moduli of abelian varieties, especially surfaces. We cover compactification of Siegel modular varieties; classification of the compactified varieties by Kodaira dimension, etc.; moduli of abelian surfaces and especially applications of the lifting of Jacobi forms to modular forms; projective models of some special Siegel modular 3-folds; non-principally polarized abelian surfaces; and constructing degenerating families of abelian varieties.
We initiate a study of the rings of invariants of modular representations of elementary abelian p-groups. With a few notable exceptions, the modular representation theory of an elementary abelian p-group is wild. However, for a given dimension, it is possible to parameterise the representations. We describe parameterisations for modular representations of dimension two and of dimension three. We compute the ring of invariants for all two dimensional representations; these rings are generated by two algebraically independent elements. We compute the ring of invariants of the symmetric square of…
