We answer a question of Abhyankar by constructing an algebraic closure of the field of power series over a field of positive characteristic, using "generalized power series". (The corresponding construction in characteristic 0 dates back to Newton.)
In an earlier preprint (math.AG/9810142) we gave an explicit description of the algebraic closure of the field of power series over a field of characteristic p, in terms of "generalized power series". In this paper, we give an analogous description of the algebraic closure of the fraction field of the Witt ring of a field of characteristic p, using an analogue of generalized power series in mixed characteristic due to Poonen.
We study the algebraic and geometric properties of the integral closure of different rings of functions on a real algebraic variety : the regular functions and the continuous rational functions.
We construct algebraically closed fields containing an algebraic closure of the field of power series in several variables over a characteristic zero field. Each of these fields depends on the choice of an Abhyankar valuation and are constructed via the Newton-Puiseux method. Then we study more carefully the case of monomial valuations and we give a result generalizing the Abhyankar-Jung Theorem for monic polynomials whose discriminant is weighted homogeneous.
We prove the base point free theorem for big line bundles on a three-dimensional log canonical projective pair defined over the algebraic closure of a finite field.
A criterion for the existence of a plane model of an algebraic curve such that the Galois closures of projections from two points are the same is presented. As an application, it is proved that the Hermitian curve in positive characteristic coincides with the Galois closures of projections of some plane curve from some two non-uniform points.
It is well known that the usual Huzita-Hatori axioms for origami enable angle trisection but not angle quintisection. Using the concept of a multifold, Lang has achieved quintisection but not arbitrary algebraic numbers. We define the n-parameter multifold and show how to use one-parameter multifolds to obtain the algebraic closure of the rational numbers.
Let G be a commutative algebraic group over Q. Let Gamma be a subgroup of G(Q) contained in the union of the compact subgroups of G(Q_p). We formulate a guess for the dimension of the closure of Gamma in G(Q_p), and show that its correctness for certain tori is equivalent to Leopoldt's conjecture.
We study orthogonal decompositions of symmetric and ordinary tensors using methods from linear algebra. For the field of real numbers we show that the sets of decomposable tensors can be defined be equations of degree 2. This gives a new proof of some of the results of Robeva and Boralevi et al. Orthogonal decompositions over the field of complex numbers had not been studied previously; we give an explicit description of the set of decomposable tensors using polynomial equalities and inequalities, and we begin a study of their closures. The main open problem that arises from this work is to ob…
Given a polynomial $f$ and a semi-algebraic set $S$, we provide a symbolic algorithm to find the equations and inequalities defining a semi-algebraic set $Q$ which is identical to the closure of the image of $S$ under $f$, i.e., \begin{equation} Q=\overline{f(S)}\,. \end{equation} Consequently, every polynomial optimization problem whose optimum value is finite has an equivalent form with attained optimum value, i.e., \begin{equation} \min \limits_{t\in Q} t =\inf\limits_{x\in S} f(x) \end{equation} whenever the right-hand side is finite. Given $d$ as the upper bound on the degrees of $f$ and …
We explore connected affine algebraic groups $G$, which enjoy the following finiteness property $\rm (F)$: for every algebraic action of $G$, the closure of every $G$-orbit contains only finitely many $G$-orbits. We obtain two main results. First, we classify such groups. Namely, we prove that a connected affine algebraic group $G$ enjoys property $\rm (F)$ if and only if $G$ is either a torus or a product of a torus and a one-dimensional connected unipotent algebraic group. Secondly, we obtain a characterization of such groups in terms of the modality of action in the sense of V. Arnol'd. Nam…
Let $G$ be a connected linear algebraic group, let $V$ be a finite dimensional algebraic $G$-module, and let $\mathcal O_1$, $\mathcal O_2$ be two $G$-orbits in $V$. We describe a constructive way to find out whether $\mathcal O_1$ lies in the closure of $\mathcal O_2$ or not.
Let $G$ be the group $GL_r(C) \times (C^\times)^n$. We conjecture that the finely-graded Hilbert series of a $G$ orbit closure in the space of $r$-by-$n$ matrices is wholly determined by the associated matroid. In support of this, we prove that the coefficients of this Hilbert series corresponding to certain hook-shaped Schur functions in the $GL_r(C)$ variables are determined by the matroid, and that the orbit closure has a set-theoretic system of ideal generators whose combinatorics are also so determined. We also discuss relations between these Hilbert series for related matrices, including…
This is an expanded version of the author's lecture at the Conference in Commutative Algebra and Algebraic Geometry in Messina Italy in June 1999. The purpose of the talk was to give a brief introduction to the subject of tight closure, aimed at commutative algebraists who have not before studied this topic. The first part focused mainly on the definition and basic properties, with the second part focusing on some applications to algebraic geometry, particularly to global generation of adjoint linear series. These lecture notes follow even more closely a series of two lectures I gave in Kashik…
In this paper we study the complexity of constructing a hitting set for the closure of VP, the class of polynomials that can be infinitesimally approximated by polynomials that are computed by polynomial sized algebraic circuits, over the real or complex numbers. Specifically, we show that there is a PSPACE algorithm that given n,s,r in unary outputs a set of n-tuples over the rationals of size poly(n,s,r), with poly(n,s,r) bit complexity, that hits all n-variate polynomials of degree-r that are the limit of size-s algebraic circuits. Previously it was known that a random set of this size is a…
We compute the equivariant fundamental class of the orbit closure of a linear series on the projective line. We also describe the boundary of the orbit closure and how the orbits specialise in one parameter families.
Let $k$ be a field of positive characteristic and $K = k(V)$ a function field of a variety $V$ over $k$ and let ${\mathbf A}_K$ be a ring of adéles of $K$ with respect to a cofinite set of the places on $K$ corresponding to the divisors on $V$. Given a Drinfeld module $Φ:{\mathbb F}[t] \to \operatorname{End}_K({\mathbb G}_a)$ over $K$ and a positive integer $g$ we regard both $K^g$ and ${\mathbf A}_K^g$ as $Φ({\mathbb F}_p[t])$-modules under the diagonal action induced by $Φ$. For $Γ\subseteq K^g$ a finitely generated $Φ(\F_p[t])$-submodule and an affine subvariety $X \subseteq \bG_a^g$ define…
Given a point S (the light position) in P^3 and an algebraic surface Z (the mirror) of P^3, the caustic by reflection of Z from S is the Zariski closure of the envelope of the reflected lines got by reflection of the incident lines (Sm) on Z at m in Z. We use the ramification method to identify the caustic by reflection with the Zariski closure of the image, by a rational map, of an algebraic 2-covering space of Z. We also give a general formula for the degree (with multiplicity) of caustics (by reflection) of algebraic surfaces.
We discover a class of projective self-dual algebraic varieties. Namely, we consider actions of isotropy groups of complex symmetric spaces on the projectivized nilpotent varieties of isotropy modules. For them, we classify all orbit closures $X$ such that $X=\check X$ where $\check X$ is the projective dual of $X$. We give algebraic criteria of projective self-duality for the considered orbit closures.
Given a variation of Hodge structures on a quasi-projective base $S$, whose generic Mumford-Tate group is non-product, we prove that the (countable) union of positive components of the Hodge locus is either an algebraic subvariety of $S$, or is Zariski-dense in $S$.
Let G be a simply connected semisimple algebraic group over an algebraically closed field k of characteristic 0 and let V be a rational simple G-module of finite dimension. If G/H \subset P(V) is a spherical orbit and if X is its closure, then we describe the orbits of X and those of its normalization. If moreover the wonderful completion of G/H is strict, then we give necessary and sufficient combinatorial conditions so that the normalization morphism is a homeomorphism. Such conditions are trivially fulfilled if G is simply laced or if H is a symmetric subgroup.
We construct an explicit filtration of the ring of algebraic power series by finite dimensional constructible sets, measuring the complexity of these series. As an application, we give a bound on the dimension of the set of algebraic power series of bounded complexity lying on an algebraic variety defined over the field of power series.
In this paper we investigate the orbit closures for the class of representations of simple algebraic groups associated to various gradings on a simple Lie algebras of type $E_6$, $F_4$ and $G_2$. The methods for classifying the orbits for these actions were developed by Vinberg. We give the orbit descriptions, the degeneration partial orders, and decide the normality of the orbit closures. We also investigate the rational singularities, Cohen-Macaulay and Gorenstein properties for the orbit closures. We give the generators of the defining ideals of orbit closures.
We consider function fields of transcendence degree at least 2 over algebraic closures of finite fields, and describe a functorial way to recover such function fields form their pro-l Galois theory.
Let V be a nonsingular projective algebraic variety of dimension n. Suppose there exists a very ample divisor D such that D^n=6 and dim H^0(V, O(D))=n+3. Then, (V, D) defines a D_6-Galois embedding if and only if it is a Galois closure variety of a smooth cubic in P^{n+1} with respect to a suitable projection center such that the pull back of hyperplane of P^n is linearly equivalent to D.
Let G be a connected semisimple linear algebraic group over an algebraically closed field k of positive characteristic and let X denote an equivariant embedding of G. We define a distinguished Steinberg fiber N in G, called the zero-fiber, and prove that the closure of N within X is normal and Cohen-Macaulay. Furthermore, when X is smooth we prove that the closure of N is a local complete intersection.
We study the variety membership testing problem in the case when the variety is given as an orbit closure and the ambient space is the set of all 3-tensors. The first variety that we consider is the slice rank variety, which consists of all 3-tensors of slice rank at most $r$. We show that the membership testing problem for the slice rank variety is $\NP$-hard. While the slice rank variety is a union of orbit closures, we define another variety, the minrank variety, expressible as a single orbit closure. Our next result is the $\NP$-hardness of membership testing in the minrank variety, hence …
This paper is the second in a series of three, the aim of which is to construct algebraic geometry over a free metabelian Lie algebra $F$. For the universal closure of free metabelian Lie algebra of finite rank $r \ge 2$ over a finite field $k$ we find a convenient set of axioms in the language of Lie algebras $L$ and the language $L_{F}$ enriched by constants from $F$. We give a description of: * The structure of finitely generated algebras from the universal closure of $F_r$ in both $L$ and $L_{F_r}$ * The structure of irreducible algebraic sets over $F_r $ and respective coordinate algebras…
This work is devoted to the study of the support of a Laurent series in several variables which is algebraic over the ring of power series over a characteristic zero field. Our first result is the existence of a kind of maximal dual cone of the support of such a Laurent series. As an application of this result we provide a gap theorem for Laurent series which are algebraic over the field of formal power series. We also relate these results to diophantine properties of the fields of Laurent series.
The Griffiths group $\Gr^r(X)$ of a smooth projective variety $X$ over an algebraically closed field is defined to be the group of homologically trivial algebraic cycles of codimension $r$ on $X$ modulo the subgroup of algebraically trivial algebraic cycles. The main result of this paper is that the Griffiths group $\Gr^2(A_\kbar)$ of a supersingular abelian variety $A_\kbar$ over the algebraic closure of a finite field of characteristic $p$ is at most a $p$-primary torsion group. As a corollary the same conclusion holds for supersingular Fermat threefolds. In contrast, using methods of C. Sch…
We give a necessary and sufficient condition for a type of generalized power series to be algebraic over the ring of power series with coefficients in a finite field. This result extend a classical theorem of Huang-Stefanescu.
Let $X$ denote an equivariant embedding of a connected reductive group $G$ over an algebraically closed field $k$. Let $B$ denote a Borel subgroup of $G$ and let $Z$ denote a $B \times B$-orbit closure in $X$. When the characteristic of $k$ is positive and $X$ is projective we prove that $Z$ is globally $F$-regular. As a consequence, $Z$ is normal and Cohen-Macaulay for arbitrary $X$ and arbitrary characteristics. Moreover, in characteristic zero it follows that $Z$ has rational singularities. This extends earlier results by the second author and M. Brion.
We study Tate motives with integral coefficients through the lens of tensor triangular geometry. For some base fields, including the field of algebraic numbers and the algebraic closure of a finite field, we arrive at a complete description of the tensor triangular spectrum and a classification of thick tensor ideals.
