In this article we construct a piecewise Euclidean, non-positively curved 2-complex for the 3-generator Artin groups of large type. As a consequence we show that these groups are biautomatic. A slight modification of the proof shows that many other Artin groups are also biautomatic. The general question (whether all Artin groups are biautomatic) remains open.
We examine the construction of Huang and Osajda that was used in their proof of the biautomaticity of Artin groups of almost large type. We describe a slightly simpler variant of that biautomatic structure, with explicit descriptions of a few small examples, and we examine some of the properties of the structure. We explain how the construction can be programmed within the GAP system.
A graph is Helly if every family of pairwise intersecting combinatorial balls has a nonempty intersection. We show that weak Garside groups of finite type and FC-type Artin groups are Helly, that is, they act geometrically on Helly graphs. In particular, such groups act geometrically on spaces with convex geodesic bicombing, equipping them with a nonpositive-curvature-like structure. That structure has many properties of a CAT(0) structure and, additionally, it has a combinatorial flavor implying biautomaticity. As immediate consequences we obtain new results for FC-type Artin groups (in parti…
We prove that Artin groups from a class containing all large-type Artin groups are systolic. This provides a concise yet precise description of their geometry. Immediate consequences are new results concerning large-type Artin groups: biautomaticity; existence of $EZ$-boundaries; the Novikov conjecture; descriptions of finitely presented subgroups, of virtually solvable subgroups, and of centralizers for infinite order elements; the Burghelea conjecture; existence of low-dimensional models for classifying spaces for some families of subgroups.
According to the Tits conjecture proved by Crisp and Paris, [CP], the subgroups of the braid group generated by proper powers of the Artin elements are presented by the commutators of generators which are powers of commuting elements. Hence they are naturally presented as right-angled Artin groups. The case of subgroups generated by powers of the band generators is more involved. We show that the groups are right-angled Artin groups again, if all generators are proper powers with exponent at least 3. We also give a presentation in cases at the other extreme, when all generators occur with expo…
The goal of this paper is to construct examples of centralizers in the Artin braid groups requiring the number of generators quadratic in the number of strings. These examples disprove a recent conjecture of N. Franco and J. Gonzalez-Meneses.
It was conjectured by Tits that the only relations amongst the squares of the standard generators of an Artin group are the obvious ones, namely that a^2 and b^2 commute if ab=ba appears as one of the Artin relations. In this paper we prove Tits' conjecture for all Artin groups. More generally, we show that, given a number m(s)>1 for each Artin generator s, the only relations amongst the powers s^m(s) of the generators are that a^m(a) and b^m(b) commute if ab=ba appears amongst the Artin relations.
We study the horofunction boundary of an Artin group of dihedral type with its word metric coming from either the usual Artin generators or the dual generators. In both cases, we determine the horoboundary and say which points are Busemann points, that is the limits of geodesic rays. In the case of the dual generators, it turns out that all boundary points are Busemann points, but this is not true for the Artin generators. We also characterise the geodesics with respect to the dual generators, which allows us to calculate the associated geodesic growth series.
We show that non-abelian two-generator subgroups of right-angled Artin groups are quasi-isometrically embedded free groups. This provides an alternate proof of a theorem of A. Baudisch: that all two-generator subgroups are free or free abelian. Additionally, it shows that they are quasi-isometrically embedded. Our theorem also gives a method for detecting groups that are not isomorphic to a subgroup of any RAAG. We present some counterexamples in subgroups with more than two generators.
We show that many $2$-dimensional Artin groups are residually finite. This includes $3$-generator Artin groups with labels $\geq 4$ except for $(2m+1, 4,4)$ for any $m\geq 2$. As a first step towards residual finiteness we show that these Artin groups, and many more, split as free products with amalgamation or HNN extensions of finite rank free groups. Among others, this holds for all large type Artin groups with defining graph admitting an orientation, where each simple cycle is directed.
The Tits Conjecture, proved by Crisp and Paris, states that squares of the standard generators of any Artin group generate an obvious right-angled Artin subgroup. We consider a larger set of elements consisting of all the centers of the irreducible spherical special subgroups of the Artin group, and conjecture that sufficiently large powers of those elements generate an obvious right-angled Artin subgroup. This alleged right-angled Artin subgroup is in some sense as large as possible; its nerve is homeomorphic to the nerve of the ambient Artin group. We verify this conjecture for the class of …
In this paper, we give a Groebner-Shirshov basis of the braid group $B_{n+1}$ in the Artin--Garside generators. As results, we obtain a new algorithm for getting the Garside normal form, and a new proof that the braid semigroup $B^+{n+1}$ is the subsemigroup in $B_{n+1}$.
In his initial paper on braids E.Artin gave a presentation with two generators for an arbitrary braid group. We give analogues of this Artin's presentation for various generalizations of braids.
We introduce the palindromic automorphism group and the palindromic Torelli group of a right-angled Artin group A_G. The palindromic automorphism group Pi A_G is related to the principal congruence subgroups of GL(n,Z) and to the hyperelliptic mapping class group of an oriented surface, and sits inside the centraliser of a certain hyperelliptic involution in Aut(A_G). We obtain finite generating sets for Pi A_G and for this centraliser, and determine precisely when these two groups coincide. We also find generators for the palindromic Torelli group.
In this paper we study some combinatorial aspects of the singular Artin monoids. Firstly, we show that a singular Artin monoid $SA$ can be presented as a semidirect product of a graph monoid with its associated Artin group $A$. Such a decomposition implies that a singular Artin monoid embeds in a group. Secondly, we give a solution to the word problem for the FC type singular Artin monoids. Afterwards, we show that FC type singular Artin monoids have the FRZ property. Briefly speaking, this property says that the centralizer in $SA$ of any non-zero power of a standard singular generator $τ_s$ …
We classify an action of the $n$-strand braid group on the free group of rank $n$ which is similar to the Artin representation in the sense that the $i$-th generator $σ_{i}$ of $B_{n}$ acts so that it fixes all free generators $x_{j}$ except $j = i,i+1$. We determine all such representations and discuss knot invariants coming from such representations.
For a right-angled Artin group $A_Γ$, the untwisted outer automorphism group $U(A_Γ)$ is the subgroup of $Out(A_Γ)$ generated by all of the Laurence-Servatius generators except twists (where a {\em twist} is an automorphisms of the form $v\mapsto vw$ with $vw=wv$). We define a space $Σ_Γ$ on which $U(A_Γ)$ acts properly and prove that $Σ_Γ$ is contractible, providing a geometric model for $U(A_Γ)$ and its subgroups. We also propose a geometric model for all of $Out(A_Γ)$ defined by allowing more general markings and metrics on points of $Σ_Γ$.
We use polyhedral product models to analyse the structure of the commutator subgroup of a right-angled Artin group. In particular, we provide a minimal set of generators for the commutator subgroup, consisting of special iterated commutators of canonical generators.
We give a necessary and sufficient condition for a 2-dimensional or a three-generator Artin group $A$ to be (virtually) cocompactly cubulated, in terms of the defining graph of $A$.
For each natural number $d$ we construct a $3$-generated group $H_d$, which is a subdirect product of free groups, such that the cohomological dimension of $H_d$ is $d$. Given a group $F$ and a normal subgroup $N \lhd F$ we prove that any right angled Artin group containing the special HNN-extension of $F$ with respect to $N$ must also contain $F/N$. We apply this to construct, for every $d \in \mathbb{N}$, a $4$-generated group $G_d$, embeddable into a right angled Artin group, such that the cohomological dimension of $G_d$ is $2$ but the cohomological dimension of any right angled Artin grou…
We study monoids generated by Zariski-van Kampen generators in the 17 fundamental groups of the complement of logarithmic free divisors in C^3 listed by Sekiguchi (Theorem 1). Five of them are Artin monoids and eight of them are free abelian monoids. The remaining four monoids are not Gaussian and, hence, are neither Garside nor Artin (Theorem 2). However, we introduce, similarly to Artin monoids, fundamental elements and show their existence (Theorem 3). One of the four non-Gaussian monoids satisfies the cancellation condition (Theorem 4).
We show that a triangle Artin group $\text{Art}_{MNP}$ where $M\leq N\leq P$ splits as an amalgamated product or an HNN extension of finite rank free groups, provided that either $M>2$, or $N>3$. We also prove that all even three generator Artin groups are residually finite.
Let G be a right-angled Artin group. We use geometric methods to compute a presentation of the subgroup H of Aut(G) consisting of the automorphisms that send each generator to a conjugate of itself. This generalizes a result of McCool on basis-conjugating automorphisms of free groups.
We study the outer automorphism group of a right-angled Artin group $A_Γ$ with finite defining graph $Γ$. We construct a subnormal series for $Out(A_Γ)$ such that each consecutive quotient is either finite, free-abelian, $GL(n,\mathbb{Z})$, or a Fouxe-Rabinovitch group. The last two types act respectively on a symmetric space or a deformation space of trees, so that there is a geometric way of studying each piece. As a consequence we prove that the group $Out(A_Γ)$ is type VF (it has a finite index subgroup with a finite classifying space). The main technical work is a study of relative outer …
We describe a constructive, cubic time solution to the conjugacy problem in Artin groups of extra-large type, which was proved solvable in those groups by Appel and Schupp. We use results from two of our previous papers that characterise geodesic words in those groups, as well as the description of conjugacy between elements involving three or more generators that is given by Appel and Schupp.
For a connected graph L, let G(L) be a group with generators the vertex set of L, subject only to the relations that the ends of each edge commute. Now let H(L) be the kernel of the homomorphism from G(L) to the integers that takes each vertex to 1. M. Bestvina and N. Brady have shown that finiteness properties of H(L) are intimately related to the topology of the clique complex of L. We give a presentation for H(L), with generators the edges of L, and an infinite family of relators for each 1-cycle in L. In the case when the clique complex for L is simply-connected, we give a finite presentat…
We exhibit 3-generator Artin groups which have finite 2-dimensional Eilenberg-Mac Lane spaces, but which do not act properly discontinuously by semi-simple isometries on a 2-dimensional CAT(0) complex. We prove that infinitely many of these groups are the fundamental groups of compact, non-positively curved 3-complexes. These examples show that the geometric dimension of a CAT(0) group may be strictly less than its CAT(0) dimension.
We show thatthe double reversing algorithm proposed by dehornoy for solving the word problem in the braid group can also be used to recognize the conjugates of powers of the generators in an Artin group of spherical type. The proof uses a characterization of these powers in terms of their fractional decomposition. This algorithm could have potential applications to braid-based cryptography; it also provides a fast method for testing a necessary condition in the classification of surfaces in algebraic geometry.
Let $A$ be an Artin group. A partition $\mathcal{P}$ of the set of standard generators of $A$ is called admissible if, for all $X,Y \in \mathcal{P}$, $X \neq Y$, there is at most one pair $(s,t) \in X \times Y$ which has a relation. An admissible partition $\mathcal{P}$ determines a quotient Coxeter graph $Γ/\mathcal{P}$. We prove that, if $Γ/\mathcal{P}$ is either a forest or an even triangle free Coxeter graph and $A_X$ is residually finite for all $X \in \mathcal{P}$, then $A$ is residually finite.
A finite simplicial graph Γdetermines a right-angled Artin group G_Γ, with generators corresponding to the vertices of Γ, and with a relation vw=wv for each pair of adjacent vertices. We compute the lower central series quotients, the Chen quotients, and the (first) resonance variety of G_Γ, directly from the graph Γ.
Given a right-angled Artin group A, the associated Bestvina-Brady group is defined to be the kernel of the homomorphism A \to \mathbb{Z} that maps each generator in the standard presentation of A to a fixed generator of \mathbb{Z}. We prove that the Dehn function of an arbitrary finitely presented Bestvina-Brady group is bounded above by n^4. This is the best possible universal upper bound.
In the paper we give a survey of rather new notions and results which generalize classical ones in the theory of braids. Among such notions are various inverse monoids of partial braids. We also observe presentations different from standard Artin presentation for generalizations of braids. Namely, we consider presentations with small number of generators, Sergiescu graph-presentations and Birman-Ko-Lee presentation. The work of V.V.Chaynikov on the word and conjugacy problems for the singular braid monoid in Birman-Ko-Lee generators is described as well.
Given a group $G$ and an automorphism $φ$ of $G$, two elements $x, y \in G$ are said to be $φ$-conjugate if $x = g y φ(g)^{-1}$ for some $g \in G$. The number of equivalence classes is the Reidemeister number $R(φ)$ of $φ$, and if $R(φ) = \infty$ for all automorphisms of $G$, then $G$ is said to have the $R_\infty$-property. A finite simple graph $Γ$ gives rise to the right-angled Artin group $A_Γ$, which has as generators the vertices of $Γ$ and as relations $vw = wv$ if and only if $v$ and $w$ are joined by an edge in $Γ$. We conjecture that all non-abelian right-angled Artin groups have the…
We prove that many Artin groups of large type satisfy the rapid decay property, including all those of extra-large type. For many of these, including all 3-generator groups of extra-large type, a result of Lafforgue applies to show that the groups satisfy the Baum-Connes conjecture without coefficients. Our proof of rapid decay combines elementary analysis with combinatorial techniques, and relies on properties of geodesic words in Artin groups of large type that were observed in an earlier publication by two of the authors of this current article.
We construct and study polyhedral product models for classifying spaces of right-angled Artin and Coxeter groups, general graph product groups and their commutator subgroups. By way of application, we give a criterion of freeness for the commutator subgroup of a graph product group, and provide an explicit minimal set of generators for the commutator subgroup of a right-angled Coxeter group.
In this paper we consider the class of 2-dimensional Artin groups with connected, large type, triangle-free defining graphs (type CLTTF). We classify these groups up to isomorphism, and describe a generating set for the automorphism group of each such Artin group. In the case where the defining graph has no separating edge or vertex we show that the Artin group is not abstractly commensurable to any other CLTTF Artin group. If, moreover, the defining graph satisfies a further `vertex rigidity' condition, then the abstract commensurator group of the Artin group is isomorphic to its automorphism…
We study braid diagrams with a minimal number of crossings. Such braid diagrams correspond to geodesic words for the braid groups with standard Artin generators. We prove that a diagram of a homogeneous braid is minimal if and only if it is homogeneous. We conjecture that monoids of homogeneous braids are Artin-Tits monoids and prove that monoids of alternating braids are right-angled Artin monoids. Using this, we give a lower bound on the growth rate of the braid groups.
The irreducible euclidean Coxeter groups that naturally act geometrically on euclidean space are classified by the well-known extended Dynkin diagrams and these diagrams also encode the modified presentations that define the irreducible euclidean Artin groups. These Artin groups have remained mysterious with some exceptions until very recently. Craig Squier clarified the structure of the three examples with three generators more than twenty years ago and François Digne more recently proved that two of the infinite families can be understood by constructing a dual presentation for each of these…
This article is dedicate to cabling on virtual braids. This construction gives a new generating set for the virtual pure braid group $VP_n$. Consequently we describe $VP_4$ as HNN-extension. As an application to classical braids, we find a new presentation of the Artin pure braid group $P_4$ in terms of the cabled generators.
An even Artin group is a group which has a presentation with relations of the form $(st)^n=(ts)^n$ with $n\ge 1$. With a group $G$ we associate a Lie $\mathbb Z$-algebra $\mathcal{TG}r(G)$. This is the usual Lie algebra defined from the lower central series, truncated at the third rank. For each even Artin group $G$ we determine a presentation for $\mathcal{TG}r(G)$. Then we prove a criterion to determine whether two Coxeter matrices are isomorphic. Let $c,d\in\mathbb N$ such that $c\ge1$, $d\ge2$ and $\gcd(c,d)=1$. We show that, if two even Artin groups $G$ and $G'$ having presentations with …
In 2003, Fomin and Zelevinsky proved that finite type cluster algebras can be classified by Dynkin diagrams. Then in 2013, Barot and Marsh defined the presentation of a reflection group associated to a Dynkin diagram in terms of an edge-weighted, oriented graph, and proved that this group is invariant (up to isomorphism) under diagram mutations. In this paper, we extend Barot and Marsh's results to Artin group presentations, defining new generator relations and showing mutation-invariance for these presentations.
Let $D$ be the incidence graph of the projective plane over $\FF_3$. The Artin group of the graph $D$ maps onto the bimonster and a complex hyperbolic reflection group $Γ$ acting on 13 dimensional complex hyperbolic space $Y$. The generators of the Artin group are mapped to elements of order 2 (resp. 3) in the bimonster (resp. $Γ$). Let $Y^{\circ} \subseteq Y$ be the complement of the union of the mirrors of $Γ$. Daniel Allcock has conjectured that the orbifold fundamental group of $Y^{\circ}/Γ$ surjects onto bimonster. In this article we study the reflection group $Γ$. Our main result shows t…
We give a complete classification of quadratic algebras A, with Hilbert series $H_A=(1-t)^{-3}$, which is the Hilbert series of commutative polynomials on 3 variables. Koszul algebras as well as algebras with quadratic Gröbner basis among them are identified. We also give a complete classification of cubic algebras A with Hilbert series $H_A=(1+t)^{-1}(1-t)^{-3}$. These two classes of algebras contain all Artin-Schelter regular algebras of global dimension 3. As far as the latter are concerned, our results extend well-known results of Artin and Schelter by providing a classification up to an a…
This paper is the first part of a series of papers aimed at improving the classification by Formanek of the irreducible representations of Artin braid groups of small dimension. In this paper we classify all the irreducible complex representations $ρ$ of Artin braid group $B_n$ with the condition $rank (ρ(σ_i)-1)=2$ where $σ_i$ are the standard generators. For $n \geq 7$ they all belong to some one-parameter family of $n$-dimensional representations.
Let $G=<a_1,..., a_n | a_ia_ja_i... = a_ja_ia_j..., i<j>$ be an Artin group and let $m_{ij}=m_{ji}$ be the length of each of the sides of the defining relation involving $a_i$ and $a_j$. We show if all $m_{ij}\ge 7$ then $G$ is relatively hyperbolic in the sense of Farb with respect to the collection of its two-generator subgroups $<a_i, a_j>$ for which $m_{ij}<\infty$.
Artin's representation is an injective homomorphism from the braid group $B_n$ on $n$ strands into $\operatorname{Aut}\mathbb{F}_n$, the automorphism group of the free group $\mathbb{F}_n$ on $n$ generators. The representation induces maps $B_n\to\operatorname{Aut}C^*_r(\mathbb{F}_n)$ and $B_n\to\operatorname{Aut}C^*(\mathbb{F}_n)$ into the automorphism groups of the corresponding group $C^*$-algebras of $\mathbb{F}_n$. These maps also have natural restrictions to the pure braid group $P_n$. In this paper, we consider twisted versions of the actions by cocycles with values in the circle, and d…
We introduce an algorithmic framework to investigate spherical and geodesic growth series of braid groups relatively to the Artin's or Birman-Ko-Lee's generators. We present our experimentations in the case of three and four strands and conjecture rational expressions for the spherical growth series with respect to the Birman-Ko-Lee's generators.
