Rosay and Rudin constructed examples of discrete subsets of C^n with remarkable properties. We generalize these constructions from C^n to arbitrary Stein manifolds. We prove: Given a Stein manifold X and a affine variety V of the same dimension there exists a discrete subset D in X such that (1) X-D is measure hyperbolic, (2) f(V) intersects D for every non-degenerate holomorphic map from V to X and (3) every automorphism of X preserving the set D is already the identity map. We also give examples which demonstrate that such discrete subsets can not be found in arbitrary non-Stein manifolds.
In the present paper we shall provide new examples of Stein manifolds enjoying the (algebraic) volume density property and compute their homology groups.
Given a Stein manifold with the density property, we show that under a suitable topological condition it is possible to prescribe derivatives at a finite number of points to automorphisms depending holomorphically on a Stein parameter. This is an Oka property of the manifold and is related to its holomorphic flexibility.
This paper examines the broad structure on Stein manifolds and how it generalizes the notion of a domain of holomorphy in $\mathbb C^n$. Along with this generalization, we see that Stein manifolds share key properties from domains of holomorphy, and we prove one of these major consequences. In particular, we investigate an equivalence, similar to domains of holomorphy and pseudoconvexity, on the class of manifolds. Then, we examine the canonical symplectic structure of Stein manifolds inherited from this equivalence, and how its symplectic topology develops.
We show that the group of holomorphic automorphisms of a Stein manifold X of dimension greater than 1 is infinite-dimensional, provided X is a homogeneous space of a holomorphic action of a complex Lie group.
In this article, we consider Bergman kernels related to modules at boundary points on Stein manifolds, and obtain a log-subharmonicity property of the Bergman kernels. As applications, we obtain a lower estimate of weighted $L^2$ integrals on Stein manifolds, and reprove an effectiveness result of strong openness property of modules at boundary points on Stein manifolds.
We prove that a Stein manifold of dimension $d$ admits a proper holomorphic embedding into any Stein manifold of dimension at least $2d+1$ satisfying the holomorphic density property. This generalizes classical theorems of Remmert, Bishop and Narasimhan pertaining to embeddings into complex Euclidean spaces, as well as several other recent results.
It is shown that any open Riemann surface can be immersed in any Stein manifold with (volume) density property and of dimension at least 2, if the manifold possesses an exhaustion with holomorphically convex compacts such that their complement is connected. The immersion can be made into an embedding if the dimension is at least 3. As an application, it is shown that Stein manifolds with (volume) density property and of dimension at least 3, are characterized among all other complex manifolds by their semigroup of holomorphic endomorphisms.
We prove that a Stein manifold admits a closed holomorphic 1-form without zeros in every class of the first cohomology group. We also prove an approximation result for closed holomorphic 1-forms without zeros defined in a neighborhood of a compact subset.
Suppose that Y is a complex manifold with the property that any holomorphic map from a compact convex set in a complex Euclidean space C^n (for any n) to Y is a uniform limit of entire maps from C^n to Y. We prove that a holomorphic map from a closed complex subvariety X_0 in a Stein manifold X to the manifold Y extends to a holomorphic map of X to Y provided that it extends to a continuous map. We then establish the equivalence of four Oka-type properties of a complex manifold. We also generalize a theorem of Siu and Demailly on the existence of open Stein neighborhoods of Stein subvarieties …
Let $M$ be an $n$-dimensional $d$-bounded Stein manifold $M$, i.e., a complex $n$-dimensional manifold $M$ admitting a smooth strictly plurisubharmonic exhaustion $ρ$ and endowed with the Kähler metric whose fundamental form is $ω=i\partial\overline{\partial}ρ$, such that $i\overline{\partial}ρ$ has bounded $L^\infty$ norm. We prove a vanishing result for $W^{1,2}$ harmonic forms with respect to the Bott-Chern Laplacian on $M$.
In this paper, we explore the existence of pluricomplex Green functions for Stein manifolds from a functional analysis point of view. For a Stein manifold $M$, we will denote by $O(M)$ the Fréchet space of analytic functions on $M$ equipped with the topology of uniform convergence on compact subsets. In the first section, we examine the relationship between the existence of pluricomplex Green functions and the diametral dimension of $O(M)$. This led us to consider negative plurisubharmonic functions on $M$ with a nontrivial relatively compact sublevel set (semi-proper). In section 2, we charac…
In order to get estimates on the solutions of the equation $\bar \partial u=ω$ on Stein manifold, we introduce a new method the "raising steps method", to get global results from local ones. In particular it allows us to transfer results form open sets in ${\mathbb{C}}^{n}$ to open sets in a Stein manifold.\ \par Using it we get $\displaystyle L^{r}-L^{s}$ results for solutions of equation $\bar \partial u=ω$ with a gain, $\displaystyle s>r,$ in strictly pseudo convex domains in Stein manifolds.\ \par We also get $\displaystyle L^{r}-L^{s}$ results for domains in ${\mathbb{C}}^{n}$ locally bih…
We prove the following theorem: Let X be a Stein manifold of dimension at least 2 and Y a closed complete pluripolar subset of X. Given a point p in the complement of Y there is a proper holomorphic map f from the unit disc to X such that f(0)=p and the image of f avoids Y.
In this note, we consider the linear topological invariant Ω-tilda for Fréchet spaces of global analytic functions on Stein manifolds. We show that O(M), for a Stein manifold M, enjoys the property Ω-tilda if and only if every compact subset of M lies in a relatively compact sublevel set of a bounded plurisubharmonic function defined on M. We also look at some immediate implications of this characterization.
In this paper we generalize to a certain class of Stein manifolds the Bernstein-Walsh-Siciak theorem which describes the equivalence between possible holomorphic continuation of a function $f$ defined on a compact set $K$ in $\mathbb{C}^N$ to the rapidity of the best uniform approximation of $f$ on $K$ by polynomials. We also generalize Winiarski's theorem which relates the growth rate of an entire function $f$ on $\mathbb{C}^N$ to its best uniform approximation by polynomials on a compact set.
For discrete subsets in ${\bf C}^n$ the notion of being "tame" was defined by Rosay and Rudin. We propose a general definition of "tameness" for arbitrary complex manifolds and show that many results classically known for ${\bf C}^n$ may be generalized to semisimple complex Lie groups. For example, every permutation of $SL(2,{\bf Z})$ extends to a biholomorphic self-map of $SL(2,{\bf C}$.
In this paper we prove that every Stein manifold $S$ admits a proper holomorphic immersion into any Stein manifold $X$ of dimension $2\mathrm{dim}S$ enjoying the density property or the volume density property. The case $\mathrm{dim}S=1$ was proved beforehand by Andrist and Wold (Ann. Inst. Fourier (Grenoble), 64(2):681-697, 2014). This result generalizes the classical theorem of Bishop and Narasimhan for immersions to $\mathbb{C}^n$ with $n=2\mathrm{dim}S$, and it complements the proper embedding theorem proved by Andrist et al. when $\mathrm{dim}X>2\mathrm{dim}S$ (J. Anal. Math., 130:135-150…
We generalize to intersection of strictly $c$ -convex domains in Stein manifold, $ L^{r}-L^{s}$ and Lipschitz estimates for the solutions of the $ \bar \partial $ equation done by Ma and Vassiliadou for domains in $ {\mathbb{C}}^{n}.$ For this we use a Docquier-Grauert holomorphic retraction plus the raising steps method I introduce earlier. This gives results in the case of domains with low regularity, $ {\mathcal{C}}^{3},$ for their boundary.
We study the $\bar \partial $-equation first in Stein manifold then in complete Kähler manifolds. The aim is to get $L^{r}$ and Sobolev estimates on solutions with compact support. In the Stein case we get that for any $(p,q)$-form $ω$ in $L^{r}$ with compact support and $\bar \partial $-closed there is a $(p,q-1)$-form $u$ in $W^{1,r}$ with compact support and such that $\bar \partial u=ω.$ In the case of Kähler manifold, we prove and use estimates on solutions on Poisson equation with compact support and the link with $\bar \partial $ equation is done by a classical theorem stating that the …
An open Riemann surface is called parabolic in case every bounded subharmonic function on it reduces to a constant. Several authors introduced seemingly different analogs of this notion for Stein manifolds of arbitrary dimension. In the first part of this note we compile these notions of parabolicity and give some immediate relations among them. In section 3 we relate some of these notions to the linear topological type of the Fréchet space of analytic functions on the given manifold. In sections 4 and 5 we look at some examples and show, for example, that the complement of the zero set of a W…
This is a survey on the homotopy principle in complex analysis on Stein manifolds, also called the Oka principle in this context. We concentrate on the following topics: the Oka-Grauert principle (classification of holomorphic vector bundles); the homotopy principle for holomorphic mappings from Stein manifolds and, more generally, for sections of holomorphic submersions with sprays; question on removability of intersections of holomorphic mappings with complex subvarieties; embeddings and immersions of Stein manifolds in affine spaces of minimal dimension; embeddings of open Riemann surfaces …
We develop complex function theory within certain algebras of holomorphic functions on coverings of Stein manifolds. This, in particular, includes the results on holomorphic extension from complex submanifolds, corona type theorems, properties of divisors, holomorphic analogs of the Peter-Weyl approximation theorem, Hartogs type theorems, characterization of uniqueness sets. The model examples of these algebras are: (1) Bohr's algebra of holomorphic almost periodic functions on tube domains; (2) algebra of all fibrewise bounded holomorphic functions (e.g., arising in the corona problem for $H^…
We give an abstract definition, similar to the axioms of a Stein manifold, of a class of complex Banach manifolds in such a way that a manifold belongs to the class if and only if it is biholomorphic to a closed split complex Banach submanifold of a separable Banach space.
We present a classification of 2-dimensional, taut, Stein manifolds with a proper $\R$-action. For such manifolds the globalization with respect to the induced local $\C$-action turns out to be Stein. As an application we determine all 2-dimensional taut, non-complete, Hartogs domains over a Riemann surface.
We establish basic results of complex function theory within certain algebras of holomorphic functions on coverings of Stein manifolds (such as algebras of Bohr's holomorphic almost periodic functions on tube domains or algebras of all fibrewise bounded holomorphic functions arising, e.g., in the corona problem for $H^\infty$). In particular, in this context we obtain results on holomorphic extension from complex submanifolds, properties of divisors, corona type theorems, holomorphic analogues of the Peter-Weyl approximation theorem, Hartogs type theorems, characterizations of uniqueness sets,…
We apply the methods developed in [Br1] to study holomorphic functions of slow growth on coverings of pseudoconvex domains in Stein manifolds. In particular, we extend and strengthen certain results of Gromov, Henkin and Shubin [GHS] on holomorphic L^{2} functions on coverings of pseudoconvex manifolds in the case of coverings of Stein manifolds.
We study the Diederich-Fornæss exponent and relate it to non-existence of Stein domains with Levi-flat boundaries in complex manifolds. In particular, we prove that if the Diederich-Fornæss exponent of a smooth bounded Stein domain in an $n$-dimensional complex manifold is $>k/n$, then it has a boundary point at which the Levi-form has rank $\ge k$.
In this paper we prove results on the existence and homotopy classification of holomorphic submersions from Stein manifolds to other complex manifolds. We say that a complex manifold Y satisfies Property S_n for some integer n bigger or equal the dimension of Y if every holomorphic submersion from a compact convex set in C^n of a certain special type to Y can be uniformly approximated by holomorphic submersions from C^n to Y. Assuming this condition we prove the following. A continuous map f from an n-dimensional Stein manifold X to Y is homotopic to a holomorphic submersions of X to Y if and …
We show the existence of complete negative Kähler-Einstein metric on Stein manifolds with negatively pinched holomorphic sectional curvature. We prove that any Kähler metrics on such manifolds can be deformed to the complete negative Kähler-Einstein metric using the normalized Kähler-Ricci flow.
It is well-known that the automorphism group of a hyperbolic manifold is a Lie group.Conversely, it is interesting to see whether or not any Lie group could be prescribed asthe automorphism group of certain complex manifold. Whenthe Lie group $G$ is compact and connected, this problem has been completelysolved by Bedford-Dadok and independently by Saerens-Zame on 1987. Theyhave constructed \spc bounded domains $Ω$ such that $Aut(Ω)=G$. For Bedford-Dadok's $Ω, 0\le dim_{\Bbb C}Ω- dim_{\Bbb R}G\le 1$; for generic Saerens-Zame's$Ω,dim_{\Bbb C}Ω\gg dim_{\Bbb R}G$.J. Winkelmann has answered affirma…
We establish a new generalization of an $L^2$ extension theorem of Ohsawa-Takegoshi type. The improvement in the theorem is that it allows the usual curvature assumptions to be significantly weakened in certain favorable settings. The favorable settings come about, for example, when the underlying structure (e.g., the underlying manifold, or the holomorphic Hermitian line bundle whose sections are being extended) has certain potential theoretic positivity. The simplest case occurs when the underlying manifold supports a function with self-bounded gradient in the sense of McNeal, but there are …
The classical integral representation formulas for holomorphic functions defined on pseudoconvex domains in Stein manifolds play an important role in the constructive theory of functions of several complex variables. In this paper we construct similar formulas for cetain classes of holomorphic functions defined on coverings of such domains.
Given a projective or compact Kähler manifold X and a (smooth) hypersurface Y, we study conditions under which $X \setminus Y$ could be Stein. We apply this in particular to the case when X is the projectivization of the so-called canonical extension of the tangent bundle $T_M$ of a projective manifold M with Y being the projectivization of $T_M$ itself.
We study topology of leaves of 1-dimensional singular holomorphic foliations of Stein manifolds. We prove that for a generic foliation all leaves, except for at most countably many, are contractible, the rest are topological cylinders. We show that a generic foliation is complex Kupka-Smale.
It is proved that a Stein manifold acted on by a connected compact Lie group is spherical if and only if there exists an antiholomorphic involution preserving each orbit of the action. This involution can be chosen equivariant with respect to a Weyl involution of the group.
It is shown that the unit ball in ${\mathbb C}^n$ is the only complex manifold that can universally cover both Stein and non-Stein strictly pseudoconvex domains.
In this paper we introduce the notion of a formal complex contact structure on an odd dimensional complex manifold. Our main result is that every formal complex contact structure on a Stein manifold $X$ is homotopic to a holomorphic contact structure on a Stein domain $Ω\subset X$ which is diffeotopic to $X$. We also prove a parametric h-principle in this setting, analogous to Gromov's h-principle for contact structures on smooth open manifolds. On Stein threefolds we obtain a complete homotopy classification of formal complex contact structures. Our methods also furnish a parametric h-princip…
We provide sufficient conditions assuring that a suitably decorated 2-polyhedron can be thickened to a compact 4-dimensional Stein domain. We also study a class of flat polyhedra in 4-manifolds and find conditions assuring that they admit Stein, compact neighborhoods. We base our calculations on Turaev's shadows suitably "smoothed"; the conditions we find are purely algebraic and combinatorial. Applying our results, we provide examples of hyperbolic 3-manifolds admitting "many" positive and negative Stein fillable contact structures, and prove a 4-dimensional analogue of Oertel's result on inc…
A complex manifold $Y$ is said to have the interpolation property if a holomorphic map to $Y$ from a subvariety $S$ of a reduced Stein space $X$ has a holomorphic extension to $X$ if it has a continuous extension. Taking $S$ to be a contractible submanifold of $X=\mathbb{C}^n$ gives an ostensibly much weaker property called the convex interpolation property. By a deep theorem of Forstnerič, the two properties are equivalent. They (and about a dozen other nontrivially equivalent properties) define the class of Oka manifolds. This paper is the first attempt to develop Oka theory for singular tar…
A unified summary is given of the existence theory of Stein manifolds in all dimensions, based on published and pending literature. Eliashberg's characterization of manifolds admitting Stein structures requires an extra delicate hypothesis in complex dimension 2, which can be eliminated by passing to the topological setting and invoking Freedman theory. The situation is quite similar if one asks which open subsets of a fixed complex manifold can be made Stein by an isotopy. As an application of these theorems, one can construct uncountably many diffeomorphism types of exotic R^4's realized as …
A Stein manifold X is called S-parabolic if it possesses a plurisub- harmonic exhaustion function p that is maximal outside a compact subset of X: In analogy with (Cn; ln jzj), one defines the space of polynomials on a S- parabolic manifold (X; p) as the set of all analytic functions with polynomial growth with respect to p. In this work, which is, in a sense continuation of [7], we will primarily study polynomials on S-parabolic Stein manifolds. In Section 2, we review different notions of paraboliticity for Stein manifolds, look at some examples and go over the connections between parabolici…
A Hamiltonian action of a complex torus on a symplectic complex manifold is said to be {\it multiplicity free} if a general orbit is a lagrangian submanifold. To any multiplicity free Hamiltonian action of a complex torus $T\cong (\C^\times)^n$ on a Stein manifold $X$ we assign a certain 5-tuple consisting of a Stein manifold $Y$, an étale map $Y\to \t^*$, a set of divisors on $Y$ and elements of $H^2(Y,\Z)^{\oplus n}, H^2(Y,\C)$. We show that $X$ is uniquely determined by this invariants. Furthermore, we describe all 5-tuples arising in this way.
Let X and Y be complex manifolds. One says that maps from X to Y satisfy the Oka principle if the inclusion of the space of holomorphic maps from X to Y into the space of continuous maps is a weak homotopy equivalence. In 1957 H. Grauert proved the Oka principle for maps from Stein manifolds to complex Lie groups and homogeneous spaces, as well as for sections of fiber bundles with homogeneous fibers over a Stein base. In 1989 M. Gromov extended Grauert's result to sections of submersions over a Stein base which admit dominating sprays over small open sets in the base; for proof see [F. Forstn…
We characterise hypercyclic composition operators $C_φ:f\mapsto f\circφ$ on the space of functions holomorphic on $Ω$, where $Ω$ is a connected Stein manifold and $φ$ is a holomorphic self-mapping of $Ω$. In the case when all balls with respect to the Carathéodory pseudodistance are relatively compact in $Ω$, we show that much simpler characterisation is possible (many natural classes of domains in $\CC^N$ satisfy this condition). Moreover, we show that in such a class of manifolds, and in simply connected and infinitely connected planar domains, hypercyclicity of $C_φ$ implies its hereditary …
Let $X$ be a Stein manifold of dimension $n\geq 2$ satisfying the volume density property with respect to an exact holomorphic volume form. For example, $X$ could be $\mathbb{C}^n$, any connected linear algebraic group that is not reductive, the Koras-Russell cubic, or a product $Y\times\mathbb{C}$, where $Y$ is any Stein manifold with the volume density property. We prove that chaotic automorphisms are generic among volume-preserving holomorphic automorphisms of $X$. In particular, $X$ has a chaotic holomorphic automorphism. A proof for $X=\mathbb{C}^n$ may be found in work of Fornæss and Sib…
In this paper we survey results on the existence of holomorphic embeddings and immersions of Stein manifolds into complex manifolds. Most results pertain to proper maps into Stein manifolds. We include a new result saying that every continuous map $X\to Y$ between Stein manifolds is homotopic to a proper holomorphic embedding provided that $\mathrm{dim} Y > 2\mathrm{dim}\, X$ and we allow a homotopic deformation of the Stein structure on $X$.
A Stein covering of a complex manifold may be used to realise its analytic cohomology in accordance with the Cech theory. If, however, the Stein covering is parameterised by a smooth manifold rather than just a discrete set, then we construct a cohomology theory in which an exterior derivative replaces the usual combinatorial Cech differential. Our construction is motivated by integral geometry and the representation theory of Lie groups.
In this paper we provide sufficient conditions for the graphs of holomorphic mappings on compact sets in complex manifolds to have Stein neighborhoods. We show that under these conditions the mappings have properties analogous to properties of holomorphic functions on compact sets in $\mathbb C^n$.
