It is well-known that the automorphism group of a hyperbolic manifold is a Lie group.Conversely, it is interesting to see whether or not any Lie group could be prescribed asthe automorphism group of certain complex manifold. Whenthe Lie group $G$ is compact and connected, this problem has been completelysolved by Bedford-Dadok and independently by Saerens-Zame on 1987. Theyhave constructed \spc bounded domains $Ω$ such that $Aut(Ω)=G$. For Bedford-Dadok's $Ω, 0\le dim_{\Bbb C}Ω- dim_{\Bbb R}G\le 1$; for generic Saerens-Zame's$Ω,dim_{\Bbb C}Ω\gg dim_{\Bbb R}G$.J. Winkelmann has answered affirmatively to noncompact connected Liegroups in recent years. He showed there exist Stein complete hyperbolic manifolds $Ω$ such that $Aut(Ω)=G$.In his construction, it is typical that $dim_{\Bbb C}Ω\gg dim_{\Bbb R}G$.In this article, we tackle this problem from a different aspect. We provethat for any connected Lie group $G$ (compact or noncompact), there exist completehyperbolic Stein manifolds $Ω$ such that $Aut(Ω)=G$ with $dim_{\BbbC}Ω=dim_{\Bbb R}G.$ Working on a natural complexification of the real-analyticmanifold $G$, our construction of $Ω$ is geometrically concrete andelementary in nature.
We show that the group of holomorphic automorphisms of a Stein manifold X of dimension greater than 1 is infinite-dimensional, provided X is a homogeneous space of a holomorphic action of a complex Lie group.
Let $X$ be a Stein manifold of dimension $n\geq 2$ satisfying the volume density property with respect to an exact holomorphic volume form. For example, $X$ could be $\mathbb{C}^n$, any connected linear algebraic group that is not reductive, the Koras-Russell cubic, or a product $Y\times\mathbb{C}$, where $Y$ is any Stein manifold with the volume density property. We prove that chaotic automorphisms are generic among volume-preserving holomorphic automorphisms of $X$. In particular, $X$ has a chaotic holomorphic automorphism. A proof for $X=\mathbb{C}^n$ may be found in work of Fornæss and Sib…
Given a Stein manifold with the density property, we show that under a suitable topological condition it is possible to prescribe derivatives at a finite number of points to automorphisms depending holomorphically on a Stein parameter. This is an Oka property of the manifold and is related to its holomorphic flexibility.
We show that if the group of holomorphic automorphisms of a connected Stein manifold $M$ is isomorphic to that of ${\bf C}^n$ as a topological group equipped with the compact-open topology, then $M$ is biholomorphically equivalent to ${\bf C}^n$.
We show the existence of free dense subgroups, generated by 2 elements, in the holomorphic shear and overshear group of complex-Euklidean space and extend this result to the group of holomorphic automorphisms of Stein manifolds with Density Property, provided there exists a generalized translation. The conjugation operator associated to this generalized translation is hypercyclic on the topological space of holomorphic automorphisms.
We study the possible dimensions that the groups of holomorphic automorphisms of hyperbolic Reinhardt domains can have. We are particularly interested in the problem of characterizing Reinhardt domains with automorphism group of prescribed dimension.
We prove closing lemmas for automorphisms of a Stein manifold with the density property and for endomorphisms of an Oka-Stein manifold. In the former case we need to impose a new tameness condition. It follows that hyperbolic periodic points are dense in the tame non-wandering set of a generic automorphism of a Stein manifold with the density property and in the non-wandering set of a generic endomorphism of an Oka-Stein manifold. These are the first results about holomorphic dynamics on Oka manifolds. We strengthen previous results of ours on the existence and genericity of chaotic volume-pre…
Rosay and Rudin constructed examples of discrete subsets of C^n with remarkable properties. We generalize these constructions from C^n to arbitrary Stein manifolds. We prove: Given a Stein manifold X and a affine variety V of the same dimension there exists a discrete subset D in X such that (1) X-D is measure hyperbolic, (2) f(V) intersects D for every non-degenerate holomorphic map from V to X and (3) every automorphism of X preserving the set D is already the identity map. We also give examples which demonstrate that such discrete subsets can not be found in arbitrary non-Stein manifolds.
It is an elementary fact that the action by holomorphic automorphisms on C^n is infinitely transitive, i.e., m-transitive for any m in N. The same holds on any Stein manifold with the holomorphic density property X. We study a parametrized case: we consider m points on X parametrized by a Stein manifold W, and seek a family of automorphisms of X, parametrized by W, putting them into a standard form which does not depend on the parameter. This general transitivity is shown to enjoy an Oka principle, to the effect that the obstruction to a holomorphic solution is of a purely topological nature. …
Given any real-analytic CR manifold M, we provide general conditions on M guaranteeing that the group of all its global real-analytic CR automorphisms is a Lie group (in an appropriate topology). Our conditions are in particular satisfied when M is an arbitrary compact real-analytic hypersurface embedded in some Stein manifold.
We provide unipotent factorizations of vector bundle automorphisms of real and complex vector bundles over smooth manifolds. This generalises work of Thurston-Wasserstein and Wasserstein for trivial vector bundles. We also address two symplectic cases and propose a complex geometric analog of the problem in the setting of holomorphic vector bundles over Stein manifolds.
Let X be an irreducible reduced complex space on which a connected compact Lie group K acts by holomorphic automorphisms. Let G be the complexification of K and g the Lie algebra of G. Following the theory of algebraic transformation groups, we call the complex space X spherical if X is normal and its tangent space at some point is generated by the vector fields from a Borel subalgebra b or g. We give several characterizations of spherical Stein spaces. In particular, we prove that a connected Stein manifold X is spherical if and only if the algebra of K-invariant differential operators on X i…
The paper is a survey of recent results in geometric representation theory describing group actions which induce multiplicity-free representations in the spaces of holomorphic functions. For connected compact Lie groups of automorphisms of Stein manifolds we characterize such actions in terms of antiholomorphic involutions. Some proofs are given and some results are new. For example, spherical complex spaces are defined for arbitrary real forms of complex reductive groups. Their properties, which we prove here, were known only for compact real forms. We also show that a complex compact homogen…
In this paper we expose the impact of the fundamental discovery, made by Erik Andersén and László Lempert in 1992, that the group generated by shears is dense in the group of holomorphic automorphisms of complex Euclidean spaces of dimensions $n>1$. In three decades since its publication, their groundbreaking work led to the discovery of several new phenomena and to major new results in complex analysis and geometry involving Stein manifolds and affine algebraic manifolds with many automorphisms. The aim of this survey is to present some focal points of these developments, with a view towards …
Some Stein manifolds (with a volume form) have a large group of (volume-preserving) automorphisms: this is formalized by the (volume) density property, which has remarkable consequences. Until now all known manifolds with the volume density property are algebraic, and the tools used to establish this property are algebraic in nature. In this note we adapt a known criterion to the holomorphic case, and give the first known examples of non-algebraic manifolds with the volume density property: they arise as suspensions or pseudo-affine modifications over Stein manifolds satisfying some technical …
We prove that every Stein manifold X of dimension n admits [(n+1)/2] holomorphic functions with pointwise independent differentials, and this number is maximal for every n. In particular, X admits a holomorphic function without critical points; this extends a result of Gunning and Narasimhan from 1967 who constructed such functions on open Riemann surfaces. Furthermore, every surjective complex vector bundle map from the tangent bundle TX onto the trivial bundle of rank q < n=dim X is homotopic to the differential of a holomorphic submersion of X to C^q. It follows that every complex subbundle…
Let $X$ be a Stein manifold of complex dimension at least two, $F : X \rightarrow \mathbb{C}^n$ a local biholomorphism, and $q \in F(X)$. In this paper we formulate sufficient conditions involving only objects naturally associated to $q$, in order for the fiber over $q$ to be finite. Assume that $F^{-1}(l)$ is 1-connected for the generic complex line $l$ containing $q$, and $F^{-1}(l)$ has finitely many components whenever $l$ is an exceptional line through $q$. Using arguments from topology and differential geometry, we establish a sharp estimate on the size of $F^{-1}(q)$. It follows that fo…
We construct holomorphic families of proper holomorphic embeddings of $\C^k$ into $\C^n$ ($0<k<n-1$), so that for any two different parameters in the family no holomorphic automorphism of $\C^n$ can map the image of the corresponding two embeddings onto each other. As an application to the study of the group of holomorphic automorphisms of $\C^n$ we derive the existence of families of holomorphic $\C^*$-actions on $\C^n$ ($n\ge 5$) so that different actions in the family are not conjugate. This result is surprising in view of the long standing Holomorphic Linearization Problem, which in partic…
In the last decades affine algebraic varieties and Stein manifolds with big (infinite-dimensional) automorphism groups have been intensively studied. Several notions expressing that the automorphisms group is big have been proposed. All of them imply that the manifold in question is an Oka-Forstnerič manifold. This important notion has also recently merged from the intensive studies around the homotopy principle in Complex Analysis. This homotopy principle, which goes back to the 1930's, has had an enormous impact on the development of the area of Several Complex Variables and the number of it…
