In the present paper we shall provide new examples of Stein manifolds enjoying the (algebraic) volume density property and compute their homology groups.
Given a Stein manifold with the density property, we show that under a suitable topological condition it is possible to prescribe derivatives at a finite number of points to automorphisms depending holomorphically on a Stein parameter. This is an Oka property of the manifold and is related to its holomorphic flexibility.
We prove that a Stein manifold of dimension $d$ admits a proper holomorphic embedding into any Stein manifold of dimension at least $2d+1$ satisfying the holomorphic density property. This generalizes classical theorems of Remmert, Bishop and Narasimhan pertaining to embeddings into complex Euclidean spaces, as well as several other recent results.
It is shown that any open Riemann surface can be immersed in any Stein manifold with (volume) density property and of dimension at least 2, if the manifold possesses an exhaustion with holomorphically convex compacts such that their complement is connected. The immersion can be made into an embedding if the dimension is at least 3. As an application, it is shown that Stein manifolds with (volume) density property and of dimension at least 3, are characterized among all other complex manifolds by their semigroup of holomorphic endomorphisms.
In this note, we consider the linear topological invariant Ω-tilda for Fréchet spaces of global analytic functions on Stein manifolds. We show that O(M), for a Stein manifold M, enjoys the property Ω-tilda if and only if every compact subset of M lies in a relatively compact sublevel set of a bounded plurisubharmonic function defined on M. We also look at some immediate implications of this characterization.
In this paper we prove that every Stein manifold $S$ admits a proper holomorphic immersion into any Stein manifold $X$ of dimension $2\mathrm{dim}S$ enjoying the density property or the volume density property. The case $\mathrm{dim}S=1$ was proved beforehand by Andrist and Wold (Ann. Inst. Fourier (Grenoble), 64(2):681-697, 2014). This result generalizes the classical theorem of Bishop and Narasimhan for immersions to $\mathbb{C}^n$ with $n=2\mathrm{dim}S$, and it complements the proper embedding theorem proved by Andrist et al. when $\mathrm{dim}X>2\mathrm{dim}S$ (J. Anal. Math., 130:135-150…
In this article, we consider Bergman kernels related to modules at boundary points on Stein manifolds, and obtain a log-subharmonicity property of the Bergman kernels. As applications, we obtain a lower estimate of weighted $L^2$ integrals on Stein manifolds, and reprove an effectiveness result of strong openness property of modules at boundary points on Stein manifolds.
We study topology of leaves of 1-dimensional singular holomorphic foliations of Stein manifolds. We prove that for a generic foliation all leaves, except for at most countably many, are contractible, the rest are topological cylinders. We show that a generic foliation is complex Kupka-Smale.
Let $X$ be a Stein manifold of dimension $n\geq 2$ satisfying the volume density property with respect to an exact holomorphic volume form. For example, $X$ could be $\mathbb{C}^n$, any connected linear algebraic group that is not reductive, the Koras-Russell cubic, or a product $Y\times\mathbb{C}$, where $Y$ is any Stein manifold with the volume density property. We prove that chaotic automorphisms are generic among volume-preserving holomorphic automorphisms of $X$. In particular, $X$ has a chaotic holomorphic automorphism. A proof for $X=\mathbb{C}^n$ may be found in work of Fornæss and Sib…
A complex manifold $Y$ is said to have the interpolation property if a holomorphic map to $Y$ from a subvariety $S$ of a reduced Stein space $X$ has a holomorphic extension to $X$ if it has a continuous extension. Taking $S$ to be a contractible submanifold of $X=\mathbb{C}^n$ gives an ostensibly much weaker property called the convex interpolation property. By a deep theorem of Forstnerič, the two properties are equivalent. They (and about a dozen other nontrivially equivalent properties) define the class of Oka manifolds. This paper is the first attempt to develop Oka theory for singular tar…
A complex manifold $X$ satisfies the Oka-Grauert property if the inclusion $\Cal O(S,X) \hookrightarrow \Cal C(S,X)$ is a weak equivalence for every Stein manifold $S$, where the spaces of holomorphic and continuous maps from $S$ to $X$ are given the compact-open topology. Gromov's Oka principle states that if $X$ has a spray, then it has the Oka-Grauert property. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the Oka-Grauert property using homotopical algebra. We embed the category of complex manifolds into the model category of simplicial sheaves on the site of Stein manifolds. Our main result …
In this paper we give a very simple proof of the existence and plenitude of Runge tubes in $\mathbb C^n$ $(n>1)$ and, more generally, in Stein manifolds with the density property. We show in particular that for any algebraic submanifold $A$ of codimension at least two in a complex Euclidean space $\mathbb C^n$, the normal bundle of $A$ in $\mathbb C^n$ admits a holomorphic embedding onto a Runge domain in $\mathbb C^n$ which agrees with the inclusion map $A\hookrightarrow \mathbb C^n$ on the zero section.
Some Stein manifolds (with a volume form) have a large group of (volume-preserving) automorphisms: this is formalized by the (volume) density property, which has remarkable consequences. Until now all known manifolds with the volume density property are algebraic, and the tools used to establish this property are algebraic in nature. In this note we adapt a known criterion to the holomorphic case, and give the first known examples of non-algebraic manifolds with the volume density property: they arise as suspensions or pseudo-affine modifications over Stein manifolds satisfying some technical …
In this survey of the Andersen-Lempert theory we present the state of the art in the study of the density property (which means that the Lie algebra generated by completely integrable holomorphic vector fields on a given Stein manifold is dense in the space of all holomorphic vector fields). There are also two new results in the paper one of which is the theorem stating that the product of Stein manifolds with the volume density property possesses such a property as well. The second one is a meaningful example of an algebraic surface without the algebraic density property. The proof of the las…
Suppose that Y is a complex manifold with the property that any holomorphic map from a compact convex set in a complex Euclidean space C^n (for any n) to Y is a uniform limit of entire maps from C^n to Y. We prove that a holomorphic map from a closed complex subvariety X_0 in a Stein manifold X to the manifold Y extends to a holomorphic map of X to Y provided that it extends to a continuous map. We then establish the equivalence of four Oka-type properties of a complex manifold. We also generalize a theorem of Siu and Demailly on the existence of open Stein neighborhoods of Stein subvarieties …
A question of Poletsky was to know if there exists a thin Hartogs figure such that any of its neighborhoods cannot be imbedded in Stein spaces. In \cite{chirka}, Chirka and Ivashkovitch gave such an example arising in an open complex manifold. In this paper, we answer to the question of the existence of such a figure in compact surfaces by giving an example arising in $P_2(\mathbb{C})$. By smoothing it, we obtain a smooth (non analytic) disc with boundary $\bar{D} \subset P_2(\mathbb{C})$ having the same property. Consequently, this disc intersects all algebraic curves of $P_2(\mathbb{C})$. Mo…
We prove closing lemmas for automorphisms of a Stein manifold with the density property and for endomorphisms of an Oka-Stein manifold. In the former case we need to impose a new tameness condition. It follows that hyperbolic periodic points are dense in the tame non-wandering set of a generic automorphism of a Stein manifold with the density property and in the non-wandering set of a generic endomorphism of an Oka-Stein manifold. These are the first results about holomorphic dynamics on Oka manifolds. We strengthen previous results of ours on the existence and genericity of chaotic volume-pre…
In this paper we prove results on the existence and homotopy classification of holomorphic submersions from Stein manifolds to other complex manifolds. We say that a complex manifold Y satisfies Property S_n for some integer n bigger or equal the dimension of Y if every holomorphic submersion from a compact convex set in C^n of a certain special type to Y can be uniformly approximated by holomorphic submersions from C^n to Y. Assuming this condition we prove the following. A continuous map f from an n-dimensional Stein manifold X to Y is homotopic to a holomorphic submersions of X to Y if and …
We prove that the classical Oka property of a complex manifold Y, concerning the existence and homotopy classification of holomorphic mappings from Stein manifolds to Y, is equivalent to a Runge approximation property for holomorphic maps from compact convex sets in Euclidean spaces to Y.
It is an elementary fact that the action by holomorphic automorphisms on C^n is infinitely transitive, i.e., m-transitive for any m in N. The same holds on any Stein manifold with the holomorphic density property X. We study a parametrized case: we consider m points on X parametrized by a Stein manifold W, and seek a family of automorphisms of X, parametrized by W, putting them into a standard form which does not depend on the parameter. This general transitivity is shown to enjoy an Oka principle, to the effect that the obstruction to a holomorphic solution is of a purely topological nature. …
A complex manifold Y satisfies the Convex Approximation Property (CAP) if every holomorphic map from a neighborhood of a compact convex set K in a complex Euclidean space C^n to Y can be approximated, uniformly on K, by entire maps from C^n to Y. If X is a reduced Stein space and Z is a stratified holomorphic fiber bundle over X all of whose fibers satisfy CAP, then sections of Z over X enjoy the Oka property with (jet) interpolation and approximation. Previously this has been proved by the author in the case when X is a Stein manifold without singularities (Ann. Math., 163 (2006), 689-707, ma…
We give a possible extension for shears and overshears in the case of two non commutative (quaternionic) variables in relation with the associated vector fields and flows. We present a possible definition of volume preserving automorphisms, even though there is no quaternionic volume form on $\mathbb{H}^2$ . Using this, we determine a class of quaternionic automorphisms for which the Ander- sen-Lempert theory applies. Finally, we exhibit an example of a quaternionic automor- phism, which is not in the in the closure of the set of finite compositions of volume preserving quaternionic shears.
We introduce the notion of algebraic volume density property for affine algebraic manifolds and prove some important basic facts about it, in particular that it implies the volume density property. The main results of the paper are producing two big classes of examples of Stein manifolds with volume density property. One class consists of certain affine modifications of $\C^n$ equipped with a canonical volume form, the other is the class of all Linear Algebraic Groups equipped with the left invariant volume form.
The basic result of Oka theory, due to Gromov, states that every continuous map $f$ from a Stein manifold $S$ to an elliptic manifold $X$ can be deformed to a holomorphic map. It is natural to ask whether this can be done for all $f$ at once, in a way that depends continuously on $f$ and leaves $f$ fixed if it is holomorphic to begin with. In other words, is $\scrO(S,X)$ a deformation retract of $\scrC(S,X)$? We prove that it is if $S$ has a strictly plurisubharmonic Morse exhaustion with finitely many critical points; in particular, if $S$ is affine algebraic. The only property of $X$ used in…
We apply concepts and tools from abstract homotopy theory to complex analysis and geometry, continuing our development of the idea that the Oka Principle is about fibrancy in suitable model structures. We explicitly factor a holomorphic map between Stein manifolds through mapping cylinders in three different model structures and use these factorizations to prove implications between ostensibly different Oka properties of complex manifolds and holomorphic maps. We show that for Stein manifolds, several Oka properties coincide and are characterized by the geometric condition of ellipticity. Goin…
The density property for a Stein manifold X implies that the group of holomorphic diffeomorphisms of X is infinite-dimensional and, in a certain well-defined sense, as large as possible. We prove that if G is a complex semisimple Lie group of adjoint type and K is a reductive subgroup, then G/K has the density property. This theorem is a non-trivial extension of an earlier result of ours, which handles the case of complex semi-simple Lie groups. We also establish the density property for some other complex homogeneous spaces by ad hoc methods. Finally, we introduce a lifting method that extend…
We present modified versions of existing criteria for the density property and the volume density property of complex manifolds. We apply this methods to show the (volume) density property for a family of manifolds given by $x^2y=a(\bar z) + xb(\bar z)$ with $\bar z =(z_0,\ldots,z_n)\in\mathbb{C}^{n+1}$ and volume form $\mathrm{d} x/x^2\wedge \mathrm{d} z_0\wedge\ldots\wedge\mathrm{d} z_n$. The key step is showing that in certain cases transitivity of the action of (volume preserving) holomorphic automorphisms implies the (volume) density property, and then giving sufficient conditions for the…
We introduce the notion of domains with uniform squeezing property, study various analytic and geometric properties of such domains and show that they cover many interesting examples, including Teichmuller spaces and Hermitian symmetric spaces of non-compact type. The properties supported by such manifolds include pseudoconvexity, hyperconvexity, Kaehler-hyperbolicity, vanishing of cohomology groups and quasi-isometry of various invariant metrics. It also leads to nice geometric properties for manifolds covered by bounded domains and a simple criterion to provide positive examples to a problem…
Let D be a relatively compact strongly pseudoconvex domain in a Stein manifold, and let Y be a complex manifold. We prove that the set A(D,Y), consisting of all continuous maps from the closure of D to Y which are holomorphic in D, is a complex Banach manifold. When D is the unit disc in C (or any other topologically trivial strongly pseudoconvex domain in a Stein manifold), A(D,Y) is locally modeled on the Banach space A(D,C^n)=A(D)^n with n=dim Y. Analogous results hold for maps which are holomorphic in D and of class C^r up to the boundary for any positive integer r. We also establish the O…
By open neighbourhood of an open subset $Ω$ of $\mathbb{R}^n$ we mean an open subset $Ω'$ of $\mathbb{C}^n$ such that $\mathbb{R}^n\capΩ'=Ω.$ A well known result of H. Grauert implies that any open subset of $\mathbb{R}^n$ admits a fundamental system of Stein open neighbourhoods in $\mathbb{C}^n$. Another way to state this property is to say that each open subset of $\mathbb{R}^n$ is Stein. We shall prove a similar result in the subanalytic category, so, under the assumption that $Ω$ is a subanalytic relatively compact open subset in a real analytic manifold, we show that $Ω$ admits a fundamen…
Let $X$ be a connected affine homogenous space of a linear algebraic group $G$ over $\C$. (1) If $X$ is different from a line or a torus we show that the space of all algebraic vector fields on $X$ coincides with the Lie algebra generated by complete algebraic vector fields on $X$. (2) Suppose that $X$ has a $G$-invariant volume form $ω$. We prove that the space of all divergence-free (with respect to $ω$) algebraic vector fields on $X$ coincides with the Lie algebra generated by divergence-free complete algebraic vector fields on $X$ (including the cases when $X$ is a line or a torus). The pr…
