The relationship between the operator approximation property and the strong operator approximation property has deep significance in the theory of operator algebras. The original definitions of Effros and Ruan, unlike the classical analogues, make no mention of compact operators or compact sets. In this paper we introduce ``compact matrix sets'' which correspond to the two different operator approximation properties, and show that a space has the operator approximation property if and only if the ``operator compact'' operators are contained in the closure of the finite rank operators. We also investigate when the two types of compactness agree, and introduce a natural condition which guarantees that they do.
We extend the results by Froelich and Spronk and Turowska on the connection between operator synthesis and spectral synthesis for A(G) to second countable locally compact groups G. This gives us another proof that one-point subset of G is a set of spectral synthesis and that any closed subgroup is a set of local spectral synthesis. Furthermore we show that ``non-triangular'' sets are strong operator Ditkin sets and we establish a connection between operator Ditkin sets and Ditkin sets. These results are applied to prove that any closed subgroup of $G$ is a local Ditkin set.
This article shows the existence of a class of closed bounded matrix convex sets which do not have absolute extreme points. The sets we consider are noncommutative sets, $K_X$, formed by taking matrix convex combinations of a single tuple $X$. In the case that $X$ is a tuple of compact operators with no nontrivial finite dimensional reducing subspaces, $K_X$ is a closed bounded matrix convex set with no absolute extreme points. A central goal in the theory of matrix convexity is to find a natural notion of an extreme point in the dimension free setting which is minimal with respect to spanning…
This paper is devoted to the study of Sidon sets, $Λ(p)$-sets and some related notions for compact quantum groups. We establish several different characterizations of Sidon sets, and in particular prove that any Sidon set in a discrete group is a strong Sidon set in the sense of Picardello. We give several relations between Sidon sets, $Λ(p)$-sets and lacunarities for $L^p$-Fourier multipliers, generalizing a previous work by Blendek and Michaliucek. We also prove the existence of $Λ(p)$-sets for orthogonal systems in noncommutative $L^p$-spaces, and deduce the corresponding properties for com…
This article investigates matrix convex sets and introduces their tracial analogs which we call contractively tracial convex sets. In both contexts completely positive (cp) maps play a central role: unital cp maps in the case of matrix convex sets and trace preserving cp (CPTP) maps in the case of contractively tracial convex sets. CPTP maps, also known as quantum channels, are fundamental objects in quantum information theory. Free convexity is intimately connected with Linear Matrix Inequalities (LMIs) L(x) = A_0 + A_1 x_1 + ... + A_g x_g > 0 and their matrix convex solution sets { X : L(X) …
We characterize relatively norm compact sets in the regular $C^*$-algebra of finitely generated Coxeter groups using a geometrically defined positive semigroup acting on the algebra.
We initiate the study of matrix convexity for operator spaces. We define the notion of compact rectangular matrix convex set, and prove the natural analogs of the Krein-Milman and the bipolar theorems in this context. We deduce a canonical correspondence between compact rectangular matrix convex sets and operator spaces. We also introduce the notion of boundary representation for an operator space, and prove the natural analog of Arveson's conjecture: every operator space is completely normed by its boundary representations. This yields a canonical construction of the triple envelope of an ope…
In the present article we prove a fixed point theorem for reflections of compact convex sets and give a new characterization of state space of JB-algebras among compact convex sets. Namely they are exactly those compact convex sets which are strongly spectral and symmetric.
The class of $μ$-compact sets can be considered as a natural extension of the class of compact metrizable subsets of locally convex spaces, to which the particular results well known for compact sets can be generalized. This class contains all compact sets as well as many noncompact sets widely used in applications. In this paper we give a characterization of a convex $μ$-compact set in terms of properties of functions defined on this set. Namely, we prove that the class of convex $μ$-compact sets can be characterized by continuity of the operation of convex closure of a function (= the double…
We prove that the class of Banach function lattices in which all relatively weakly compact sets are equi-integrable sets (i.e. spaces satisfying the Dunford-Pettis criterion) coincides with the class of 1-disjointly homogeneous Banach lattices. A new examples of such spaces are provided. Furthermore, it is shown that Dunford-Pettis criterion is equivalent to de la Vallee Poussin criterion in all rearrangement invariant spaces on the interval. Finally, the results are applied to characterize weakly compact pointwise multipliers between Banach function lattices.
Based on the concept of unbounded absolutely weakly convergence, we give new characterizations of L-weakly compact sets. As applications, we find some properties of order weakly compact operators. Also, a new characterizations of order continuous Banach lattices are obtained.
In this article we find some sufficient conditions for the set in the Bilateral Grand Lebesgue Space to be compact set. We consider applications into numerical methods and in the basis problem.
We study the geometric structure of compact convex sets in 2-dimensional asymmetric normed lattices. We prove that every q-compact convex set is strongly q-compact and we give a complete geometric description of the compact convex sets with non empty interior in (R^2, q), where q is an asymmetric lattice norm.
Among the sets of sequences studied, difference sets of sequences are probably the most common type of sets. This paper considers some $\ell_{p}$ type fractional difference sequence spaces via Euler gamma function. Although we characterize compactness conditions on those spaces using the main tools of Hausdorff measure of noncompactness, we can only obtain sufficient conditions when the final space is $\ell _{\infty }$. However, we use some recent results to exactly characterize the classes of compact matrix operators when the final space is the set of bounded sequences.
We provide quite sufficient conditions on the Banach spaces $E$ and $F$ in order to obtain the spaceability of the set of all linear operators from $E$ into $F$ which are $q$-compact but not $p$-compact. Also, under similar conditions over $E$, we prove that this set contains (up to the null operator) a copy of $\ell_s$ whenever $F = \ell_s$. Finally, we give some applications of our previous results to show the spaceability of some sets formed by non-linear mappings (polynomial and Lipschitz) which are $q$-compact but not $p$-compact. The spaceability in the space of holomorphic mappings dete…
Inspired in the theorem of Krein-Milamn, we investigate the existence of extreme points in compact convex subsets of asymmetric normed spaces. We focus our attention in the finite dimensional case, giving a geometric description of all compact convex subsets of a finite dimensional asymmetric normed space.
We prove the existence of a non-trivial hyperinvariant subspace for several sets of polynomially compact operators. The main results of the paper are: (i) a non-trivial norm closed algebra $\mathcal A\subseteq \mathcal B(\mathscr X)$ which consists of polynomially compact quasinilpotent operators has a non-trivial hyperinvariant subspace; (ii) if there exists a non-zero compact operator in the norm closure of the algebra generated by an operator band $\mathcal S$, then $\mathcal S$ has a non-trivial hyperinvariant subspace.
In this paper, we study stability of $M$-compactness for $l^p$ sum of Banach spaces for $1\leq p<\infty$. We also obtain a characterization of $M$-compact sets in terms of statistically maximizing sequence, a notion which is weaker than a maximizing sequence. Moreover, we introduce the notion of $\mathcal{I}$-$M$-compactness of a bounded subset $M$ of a normed linear space $X$ with respect to an ideal $\mathcal{I}$ and show that it is equivalent to $M$-compactness for non-trivial admissible ideals.
Subsets of the set of $g$-tuples of matrices that are closed with respect to direct sums and compact in the free topology are characterized. They are, in a dilation theoretic sense, contained in the hull of a single point.
Let $X$ be a real or complex Banach space and $T_t:X\to X$ is a power bounded operator (or a $C_0$-semigroup). If there exists a "occasionally" attracting compact subset K (for each x$ in unit ball $\liminf_n ρ(T^n x, K)=0$ then there exists attracting finite-dimensional subspace $L$ (for each x in X $\lim_n ρ(T^n x, L)=0$. Also we define the compact-supercyclicity. Each infinity-dimentional $X$ has no compact-supercyclic isometries. If $T$ is a supercyclic and power bounded that $T^nx$ vanishes for each $x$.
We study the class of compact convex subsets of a topological vector space which admits a strictly convex and lower semicontinuous function. We prove that such a compact set is embeddable in a strictly convex dual Banach space endowed with its weak$^*$ topology. In addition, we find exposed points where a strictly convex lower semicontinuous function is continuous.
In this note we study the endomorphisms of certain Banach algebras of infinitely differentiable functions on compact plane sets, associated with weight sequences M. These algebras were originally studied by Dales, Davie and McClure. In a previous paper this problem was solved in the case of the unit interval for many weights M. Here we investigate the extent to which the methods used previously apply to general compact plane sets, and introduce some new methods. In particular, we obtain many results for the case of the closed unit disc. This research was supported by EPSRC grant GR/M31132
We characterize those compact sets for which the Dirichlet problem has a solution within the class of continuous $m$-subharmonic functions defined on a compact set, and then within the class of $m$-harmonic functions.
This paper is devoted to the study of the relatively compact sets in Quasi-Banach function spaces, providing an important improvement of the known results. As an application, we take the final step in establishing a relative compactness criteria for function spaces with any weight without any assumption.
We give new characterizations for matrix monotonicity and convexity of fixed order which connects previous characterizations by Loewner, Dobsch, Donoghue, Kraus and Bendat--Sherman. The ideas introduced are then used to characterize matrix monotone functions of arbitrary order on general subsets of the real line.
Fractional difference sequence spaces have been studied in the literature recently. In this work, some identities or estimates for the operator norms and the Hausdorff measures of noncompactness of certain operators on some difference sequence spaces of fractional orders are established. Some classes of compact operators on those spaces are characterized. The results of this work are more general and comprehensive then many other studies in literature.
We prove the optimal estimate between the Szlenk and $w^*$-dentability indices of an arbitrary $w^*$-compact subset of the dual of a Banach space. For a given $w^*$-compact, convex subset $K$ of the dual of a Banach space, we introduce a two player game the winning strategies of which determine the Szlenk index of $K$. We give applications to the $w^*$-dentability index of a Banach space and of an operator.
In Mergelyan type approximation we uniformly approximate functions on compact sets K by polynomials or rational functions or holomorphic functions on varying open sets containing K. In the present paper we consider analogous approximation, where uniform convergence on K is replaced by uniform approximation on K of all order derivatives.
We devise a fairly general method for estimating the size of quotients between algebras of functions on a locally compact group. This method is based on the concept of interpolation sets and unifies the approaches followed by many authors to obtain particular cases. Among the applications we find, we obtain that the quotients WAP(G)/B(G) (G being a locally compact group in the class [IN] or a nilpotent locally compact group) and CB(G)/LUC(G) (G being any non-compact non-discrete locally compact group) contain a linearly isometric copy of \ell_\infty(κ(G)) where κ(G) is the compact covering num…
In this paper, we give a characterization of compact sets in $L^p$-spaces on metric measure spaces, which is a generalization of the Kolmogorov-Riesz theorem. Using the criterion, we investigate the topological type of the space consisting of lipschitz maps with bounded supports.
In this paper, we show that the sum of a compact convex subset and a simultaneously $τ$-strongly proximinal convex subset (resp. simultaneously approximatively $τ$-compact convex subset) of a Banach space X is simultaneously tau-strongly proximinal (resp. simultaneously approximatively $τ$-compact ), and the sum of weakly compact convex subset and a simultaneously approximatively weakly compact convex subset of X is still simultaneously approximatively weakly compact, where $τ$ is the norm or the weak topology. Moreover, some related results on the sum of simultaneously proximinal subspaces ar…
To a generalized tight continuous frame in a Hilbert space $\H$ indexed by a locally compact space $\Si$ endowed with a Radon measure, one associates a coorbit theory converting spaces of functions on $\Si$ in spaces of vectors comparable with $\H$. If the continuous frame is provided by the action of a suitable family of bounded operators on a fixed window, a symbolic calculus emerges, assigning operators in $\H$ to functions on $\Si$. We give some criteria of relative compactness for sets and for families of compact operators, involving tightness properties in terms of objects canonically as…
Functions, uniformly bounded in $BV$ norm in some bounded open set $U$ in $R^n$, are compact in $L_1(U)$. This result is known when $U$ has Lipschitz boundary [EG Th. 4 p. 176], [G 1.19 Th. p. 17], [Z 5.34 Cor. p. 227]; the proof for general $U$ here, after identifying the operator theoretic definition of bounded $BV$ norm with that of the Tonelli variation, appeals to the standard compactness criterion in $L_1$ [DS 21 TH. p. 301] [Y, p. 275] (For completeness, these two auxiliary results are also presented).
Two applications of Nash-Williams' theory of barriers to sequences on Banach spaces are presented: The first one is the $c_0$-saturation of $C(K)$, $K$ countable compacta. The second one is the construction of weakly-null sequences generalizing the example of Maurey-Rosenthal.
If $f$ is a real valued weakly lower semi-continous function on a Banach space $X$ and $C$ a weakly compact subset of $X$, we show that the set of $x \in X$ such that $z \mapsto \|x-z\|-f(z)$ attains its supremum on $C$ is dense in $X$. We also construct a counter example showing that the set of $x \in X$ such that $z \mapsto \|x-z\|+\|z\|$ attains its supremum on $C$ is not always dense in $X$.
We consider the cardinal invariant CG(X) of the minimal number of weakly compact subsets which generate a Banach space X. We study the behavior of this index when passing to subspaces, its relation with the Lindelof number in the weak topology and other related questions.
A method of proving local continuity of concave functions on convex set possessing the $μ$-compactness property is presented. This method is based on a special approximation of these functions. The class of $μ$-compact sets can be considered as a natural extension of the class of compact metrizable subsets of locally convex spaces, to which particular results well known for compact sets can be generalized. Applications of the obtained continuity conditions to analysis of different entropic characteristics of quantum systems and channels are considered.
The notion of super weak compactness for subsets of Banach spaces is a strengthening of the weak compactness that can be described as a local version of super-reflexivity. A recent result of K. Tu which establishes that the closed convex hull of a super weakly compact set is super weakly compact has removed the main obstacle to further development of the theory. In this paper we provide a variety of results around super weak compactness in order to show the great scope of this notion. We also give non linear characterizations of super weak compactness in terms of the (non) embeddability of spe…
The main purpose of this paper is to introduce the concepts of Wijsman $C_λ$ statistical convergence, Wijsman $C_λ$ summability and Wijsman $\mathcal{I}$-$C_λ$ summability for sequence of sets by using submethod. Also, we establish some relations among the Wijsman $C_λ$ summability, Wijsman $D_λ$ summability and Wijsman $C_{1}$ summability. Finally, we have given some equivalence results for these concepts.
In this article, we prove that a compact open set in the field $\mathbb{Q}_p$ of $p$-adic numbers is a spectral set if and only if it tiles $\mathbb{Q}_p$ by translation, and also if and only if it is $p$-homogeneous which is easy to check. We also characterize spectral sets in $\mathbb{Z}/p^n \mathbb{Z}$ ($p\ge 2$ prime, $n\ge 1$ integer) by tiling property and also by homogeneity. Moreover, we construct a class of singular spectral measures in $\mathbb{Q}_p$, some of which are self-similar measures.
A convex subset X of a linear topological space is called compactly convex if there is a continuous compact-valued map $Φ:X\to exp(X)$ such that $[x,y]\subsetΦ(x)\cup Φ(y)$ for all $x,y\in X$. We prove that each convex subset of the plane is compactly convex. On the other hand, the space $R^3$ contains a convex set that is not compactly convex. Each compactly convex subset $X$ of a linear topological space $L$ has locally compact closure $\bar X$ which is metrizable if and only if each compact subset of $X$ is metrizable.
Let $S$ be a right reversible semitopological semigroup, and let $\operatorname{LUC}(S)$ be the space of left uniformly continuous functions on $S$. Suppose that $\operatorname{LUC}(S)$ has a left invariant mean. Let $K$ be a weakly compact convex subset of a Banach space. We show that there always exists a common fixed point for any jointly weakly continuous and super asymptotically nonexpansive action of $S$ on $K$. Several variances involving the weak* compactness, the RNP, the distality of $K$ and/or the left reversibility of $S$ are also provided.
In this paper, we apply the Hausdorff measure of noncompactness to obtain the necessary and sufficient conditions for certain matrix operators on the Fibonacci difference sequence spaces l_{p}(F) and l_{infinite}(F) to be compact, where 1<=p<infinite.
Let X be a nonempty convex compact subset of some Haus-dorff locally convex topological vector space S. The well know Bauer's maximum principle stats that every convex upper semi-continuous function from X into R attains its maximum at some extremal point of X. We give some extensions of this result when X is assumed to be compact metrizable. We prove that the set of all convex upper semi-continuous functions attaining there maximum at exactly one extremal point of X is a G $δ$ dense subset of the space of all convex upper semi-continuous functions equipped with a metric compatible with the un…
We show that every finite-dimensional Euclidean space contains compact universal differentiability sets of upper Minkowski dimension one. In other words, there are compact sets $S$ of upper Minkowski dimension one such that every Lipschitz function defined on the whole space is differentiable inside $S$. Such sets are constructed explicitly.
A set $E$ in a Banach space $X$ is compactivorous if for every compact set $K$ in $X$ there is a nonempty, (relatively) open subset of $K$ which can be translated into $E$. In a separable Banach space, this is a sufficient condition which guarantees the Haar nonnegligibility of Borel subsets. We give some characterisations of this property in both separable and nonseparable Banach spaces and prove an extension of the main theorem to countable products of locally compact Polish groups.
The class of subsets of locally convex spaces called $μ$-compact sets is considered. This class contains all compact sets as well as several noncompact sets widely used in applications. It is shown that many results well known for compact sets can be generalized to $μ$-compact sets. Several examples are considered. The main result of the paper is a generalization to $μ$-compact convex sets of the Vesterstrom-O'Brien theorem showing equivalence of the particular properties of a compact convex set (s.t. openness of the mixture map, openness of the barycenter map and of its restriction to maximal…
