We show that birational smooth complex projective varieties with numerically effective canonical bundles along the exceptional loci have the same Betti numbers. In particular, birational smooth minimal models share the same Betti numbers. Our methods indicate a link between $p$-adic measure and the minimal model theory.
The classification of minimal rational surfaces and the birational links between them by Iskovskikh, Manin and others is a well-known subject in the theory of algebraic surfaces. We explain algorithms that realise links of type II between minimal del Pezzo surfaces, one of the major classes of birational links, and we describe briefly how this fits into a large project to implement the results of Iskovskikh's programme in Magma.
We prove that every log crepant birational morphism between log terminal surfaces is decomposed into log-flopping type divisorial contraction morphisms and log blow-downs. Repeating these two kinds of contractions we reach a minimal log minimal surface from any log minimal surface.
For a minimal $3$-fold $X$ with $K_X\equiv 0$ and a nef and big Weil divisor $L$ on $X$, we investigate the birational geometry inspired by $L$. We prove that $|mL|$ and $|K_X+mL|$ give birational maps for all $m\geq 17$. The result remains true under weaker assumption that $L$ is big and has no stable base components.
This article contains the notes of a graduate course on birational geometry focusing on the minimal model program. Topics covered include singularities, vanishing, nonvanishing, cone and contraction, base point freeness, finite generation, flips, termination, minimal models and Mori fibre spaces.
This paper is based on a talk at a conference "JDG 2017: Conference on Geometry and Topology". We survey recent progress on the DK hypothesis connecting the birational geometry and the derived categories stating that the K-equivalence of smooth projective varieties should correspond to the equivalence of their derived categories, and the K-inequality to the fully faithful embedding.

In this paper we consider the birational classification of pairs (S,L), with S a rational surfaces and L a linear system on S. We give a classification theorem for such pairs and we determine, for each irreducible plane curve B, its "Cremona minimal" models, i.e. those plane curves which are equivalent to B via a Cremona transformation, and have minimal degree under this condition.
Given a surface $S$ and a finite group $G$ of automorphisms of $S$, consider the birational maps $S\dashrightarrow S'$ that commute with the action of $G$. This leads to the notion of a $G$-minimal variety. A natural question arises: for a fixed group $G$, is there a birational $G$-map between two different $G$-minimal surfaces? If no such map exists, the surface is said to be $G$-birationally rigid. This paper determines the $G$-rigidity of the projective plane for every finite subgroup $G\subset\mbox{PGL}_3\left(\mathbb{C}\right)$.
Any minimal Del Pezzo G-surface S of degree smaller than 3 is G-birationally rigid. We classify those which are G-birationally superrigid and for those which fail to be so, we describe the equations of a set of generators for the infinite group of G-birational automorphisms.
We continue our study of the relation between log minimal models and various types of Zariski decompositions. Let $(X,B)$ be a projective log canonical pair. We will show that $(X,B)$ has a log minimal model if either $K_X+B$ birationally has a Nakayama-Zariski decomposition with nef positive part, or that $K_X+B$ is big and birationally it has a Fujita or CKM Zariski decomposition. Along the way we introduce polarized pairs $(X,B+P)$ where $(X,B)$ is a usual projective pair and $P$ is nef, and study the birational geometry of such pairs.
We show that 3-fold terminal flips and divisorial contractions may be factored into a sequence of flops, blow-downs to a smooth curve in a smooth 3-fold or divisorial contractions to points with minimal discrepancies.
We study the formation of finite time singularities of the Kahler-Ricci flow in relation to high codimensional birational surgery in algebraic geometry. We show that the Kahler-Ricci flow on an n-dimensionl Kahler manifold contracts a complex submanifold $\mathbb{P}^m$ with normal bundle $\oplus_{j=1}^{n-m}\mathcal{O}_{\mathbb{P}^m}(-a_j)$ for $a_j\in\mathbb{Z}^+$ and $\sum_{j=1}^{n-m} a_j \leq m$ in Gromov-Hausdorff topology with suitable initial Kahler class. We also show that the Kahler-Ricci flow resolves a family of isolated singularities uniquely in Gromov-Hausdorff topology. In particul…
We show that the minimal model program on any smooth projective surface is realized as a variation of the moduli spaces of Bridgeland stable objects in the derived category of coherent sheaves.
Let $S$ be a minimal surface of general type with $p_g = q = 1, K_S^2 = 7$. We prove that the degree of the bicanonical map is 1 or 2. Furthermore, if the degree is 2, we describe $S$ by a double cover.
For a uniruled projective manifold, we prove that a general rational curve of minimal degree through a general point is uniquely determined by its tangent vector. As applications, among other things we give a new proof, using no Lie theory, of our earlier result that a holomorphic map from a rational homogeneous space of Picard number 1 onto a projective manifold different from the projective space must be a biholomorphic map.
This is a resume of the author's talk at the Worhshop on Arithmetic, Geometry and Physics around Calabi-Yau Varieties and Mirror Symmetry (July 23-29, 2001), the Fields Institute. The aim of this note is to prove that birational smooth minimal models over C have equal Hodge numbers in all dimensions by an arithmetic method. Our method is a refinement of the method of V. Batyrev and C.-L. Wang on Betti numbers who used p-adic integration and the Weil conjecture. Our ingredient is to use further arithmetic results such as the Chebotarev density theorem and p-adic Hodge theory.
We study the Fourier--Mukai numbers of rational elliptic surfaces. As its application, we give an example of a pair of minimal 3-folds with Kodaira dimensions 1, $h^1(\mc O)=h^2(\mc O)=0$ such that they are mutually derived equivalent, deformation equivalent, but not birationally equivalent. It also supplies a counterexample of the birational Torelli problem.
We make a very detailed analysis of the numerical properties of effective divisors whose support is contained in the exceptional locus of a birational morphism of smooth projective surfaces. As an application we extend Miyaoka's inequality on the number of canonical singularities on a projective normal surface with non-negative Kodaira dimension to the non minimal case, obtaining a slightly better result than known extensions by Megyesi and Langer.
A generically generated vector bundle on a smooth projective variety yields a rational map to a Grassmannian, called Kodaira map. We answer a previous question, raised by the asymptotic behaviour of such maps, giving rise to a birational characterization of abelian varieties. In particular we prove that, under the conjectures of the Minimal Model Program, a smooth projective variety is birational to an abelian variety if and only if it has Kodaira dimension 0 and some symmetric power of its cotangent sheaf is generically generated by its global sections.
We study the birational geometry of moduli spaces of semistable sheaves on the projective plane via Bridgeland stability conditions. We show that the entire MMP of their moduli spaces can be run via wall-crossing. Via a description of the walls, we give a numerical description of their movable cones, along with its chamber decomposition corresponding to minimal models. As an application, we show that for primitive vectors, all birational models corresponding to open chambers in the movable cone are smooth and irreducible.
Del Pezzo fibrations appear as minimal models of rationally connected varieties. The rationality of smooth del Pezzo fibrations is a well studied question but smooth fibrations are not dense in moduli. Little is known about the rationality of the singular models. We prove birational rigidity, hence non-rationality, of del Pezzo fibrations with simple non-Gorenstein singularities satisfying the famous $K^2$-condition. We then apply this result to study embeddings of $\operatorname{PSL}_2(7)$ into the Cremona group.
For an algebraic variety $X$ we study the behavior of algebraic morphisms from an algebraic variety to the group $\bir(X)$ of birational maps of $X$ and obtain, as application, some insight about the relationship between the so-called Zariski topology of $\bir(X)$ and the algebraic structure of this group, where $X$ is a rational variety.
Let $S$ be a minimal surface of general type with $p_g=0$ and $K^2=6$, such that its bicanonical map $\fie\colon S\to\pp^6$ is not birational. The map $\fie$ is a morphism of degree $\le 4$ onto a surface. The case of $°\fie=4$ is completely characterized in [Topology, {\bf 40} (5) (2001), 977--991] and the present paper completes the classification of these surfaces. It is proven that the degree of $\fie$ cannot be equal to 3, and the geometry of surfaces with $°\fie=2$ is analysed in detail. The last section contains three examples of such surfaces, two of which appear to be new.
In many cases rational surfaces obtained by desingularization of birational dynamical systems are not relatively minimal. We propose a method to obtain coordinates of relatively minimal rational surfaces by using blowing down structure. We apply this method to the study of various integrable or linearizable mappings, including discrete versions of reduced Nahm equations.
Two birational projective varieties in $P^n$ are Cremona Equivalent if there is a birational modification of $P^n$ mapping one onto the other. The minimal Cremona degree of $X\subset P^n$ is the minimal integer among all degrees of varieties that are Cremona Equivalent to $X$. The Cremona Equivalence and the minimal Cremona degree is well understood for subvarieties of codimension at least $2$ while both are in general very subtle questions for divisors. In this note I compute the minimal Cremona degree of quartic surfaces in $P^3$. This allows me to show that any quartic surface of elliptic r…
By giving an estimate on the minimal slopes, we prove a Hilbert-Samuel formula for semiample and semipositive adelic line bundles. We also show the birational invariance of the arithmetic χ-volume and its continuous extension on the semiample cone.
In this paper we study the birational geometry of HyperKaehler manifolds by combining the method of minimal model program and the traditional approach of symplectic geometry.
Let (X,L) be a quasi polarized pairs, i.e. X is a normal complex projective variety and L is a nef and big line bundle on it. We study, up to birational equivalence, the positivity (nefness) of the adjoint bundles K_X + rL for high rational number r. For this we run a Minimal Model Program with scaling relative to the divisor K_X +rL. We give some applications, namely the classification up to birational equivalence of quasi polarized pairs with sectional genus 0,1 and of embedded projective varieties X < P^N with degree smaller than 2codim(X) +2.
In this paper, we study the birational geometry of the Hilbert scheme of n points on P^2. We discuss the stable base locus decomposition of the effective cone and the corresponding birational models. We give modular interpretations to the models in terms of moduli spaces of Bridgeland semi-stable objects. We construct these moduli spaces as moduli spaces of quiver representations using G.I.T. and thus show that they are projective. There is a precise correspondence between wall-crossings in the Bridgeland stability manifold and wall-crossings between Mori cones. For n at most 9, we explicitly …
Our aim is to illustrate how one can effectively apply the basic ideas and notions of topological entropy and dynamical degrees, together with recent progress of minimal model theory in higher dimension, for an explicit study of birational or biregular selfmaps of projective or compact Kähler manifolds, through concrete examples.
We complete the analysis on the birational rigidity of quasismooth Fano 3-fold deformation families appearing in the Graded Ring Database as a complete intersection. When such a deformation family $X$ has Fano index at least 2 and is minimally embedded in a weighted projective space in codimension 2, we determine which cyclic quotient singularity is a maximal centre. If a cyclic quotient singularity is a maximal centre, we construct a Sarkisov link to a non-isomorphic Mori fibre space or a birational involution. This allows, in particular, the construction of new examples of Fano 3-folds of co…
We define a categorical birational invariant for minimal geometrically rational surfaces with a conic bundle structure over a perfect field via components of a natural semiorthogonal decomposition. Together with the similar known result on del Pezzo surfaces, this provides a categorical birational invariant for geometrically rational surfaces.
Any minimal model of a projective Hyperkaehler manifold is a projective Hyperkaehler manifold. As a consequence, moduli spaces of sheaves on a k3 that don't admit a symplectic resolution are not birational to Hyperkaehler manifolds.
Given a normal surface singularity $(X, Q)$ and a birational morphism to a non- singular surface $π: X \to S$, we investigate the local geometry of the exceptional divisor $L$ of $π$. We prove that the dimension of the tangent space to $L$ at $Q$ equals the number of exceptional components meeting at $Q$. Consequences relative to the existence of such birational projections contracting a prescribed number of irreducible curves are deduced. A new characterization of minimal singularities is obtained in these terms.
Let $ϕ$ be a birational map of the complex projective plane. We know that $ϕ$ can be written as a composition of automorphisms of $\mathbb{P}^2_\mathbb{C}$ and the standard quadratic birational map $σ$. This writing, that is non-unique, is minimal if the number $\mathfrak{n}(ϕ)$ of $σ$ is as small as possible. We prove that if $ϕ$ is of degree $d\geq 2$, then $\big[\frac{\ln d}{\ln 2}\big]\leq\mathfrak{n}(ϕ)\leq 2(2d-1)$.
We study certain pencils of del Pezzo surfaces generated by a smooth del Pezzo surface S of degree less or equal to 3 anti-canonically embedded into a weighted projective space P and an appropriate multiple of a hyperplane H. Our main observation is that every minimal model program relative to the morphism lifting such pencil on a suitable resolution of its indeterminacies preserves the open subset P H â A^3. As an application, we obtain projective completions of A^3 into del Pezzo fibrations over P^1 of every degree less or equal to 4. We also obtain completions of A^3 into Mori conic bundles…
This is the second of a series of papers studying real algebraic threefolds using the minimal model program. The main result is the following. Let $X$ be a smooth projective real algebraic 3-fold. Assume that the set of real points is an orientable 3-manifold (this assumption can be weakened considerably). Then there is a fairly simple description on how the topology of real points changes under the minimal model program. The first application is to study the topology of real projective varieties which are birational to projective 3-space (Nash conjecture). The second application is a factoriz…
Let $V$ be a complex nonsingular projective 3-fold of general type. We shall give a detailed classification up to baskets of singularities on a minimal model of $V$. We show that the $m$-canonical map of $V$ is birational for all $m\geq 73$ and that the canonical volume $\text{Vol}(V)\geq {1/2660}$. When $χ(\mathcal{O}_V)\leq 1$, our result is $\text{Vol}(V)\geq {1/420}$, which is optimal. Other effective results are also included in the paper.

Let $X$ and $Y$ be proper birational varieties, say with only rational double points over a perfect field $k$ of positive characteristic. If $X$ lifts to $W_n(k)$, is it true that $Y$ has the same lifting property? This is true for smooth surfaces, but we show by example that this is false for smooth varieties in higher dimension, and for surfaces with canonical singularities. We also answer a stacky analogue of this question: given a canonical surface $X$ with minimal resolution $Y$ and stacky resolution $\mathcal{X}$, we characterize when liftability of $Y$ is equivalent to that of $\mathcal…
We show, using [14], that a smooth projective fibration f : X $\rightarrow$ Y between connected complex quasi-projective manifolds satisfies the equality $κ$(X) = $κ$(X y) + $κ$(Y) of Logarithmic Kodaira dimensions if its fibres X y admit a good minimal model. Without the last assumption, this was conjectured in [11]. Several cases are established in [13], which inspired the present text. Although the present results overlap with those of [13] in the projective case, the approach here is different, based on the r{ô}le played by birationally isotrivial fibrations, special manifolds and the core…
