Let X and Y be time-homogeneous Markov processes with common state space E, and assume that the transition kernels of X and Y admit densities with respect to suitable reference measures. We show that if there is a time t>0 such that, for each x\in E, the conditional distribution of (X_s)_{0 < s < t}, given X_0 = x = X_t, coincides with the conditional distribution of (Y_s)_{0 < s < t}, given Y_0 = x = Y_t, then the infinitesimal generators of X and Y are related by [L^Y]f = ψ^{-1}[L^X](ψf)-λf, where ψis an eigenfunction of L^X with eigenvalue λ. Under an additional continuity hypothesis, the same conclusion obtains assuming merely that X and Y share a ``bridge'' law for one triple (x,t,y). Our work entends and clarifies a recent result of I. Benjamini and S. Lee.
Motivated by the Brownian bridge on random interval considered by Bedini et al \cite{BBE}, we introduce and study Gaussian bridges with random length with special emphasis to the Markov property. We prove that if the starting process is Markov then this property was kept by the bridge with respect to the usual augmentation of its natural filtration. This leads us to conclude that the completed natural filtration of the bridge satisfies the usual conditions of right-continuity and completeness.
Processes having the same bridges are said to belong to the same reciprocal class. In this article we analyze reciprocal classes of Markov counting processes by identifying their reciprocal invariants and we characterize them as the set of counting processes satisfying some duality formula.
A Markovian bridge is a probability measure taken from a disintegration of the law of an initial part of the path of a Markov process given its terminal value. As such, Markovian bridges admit a natural parameterization in terms of the state space of the process. In the context of Feller processes with continuous transition densities, we construct by weak convergence considerations the only versions of Markovian bridges which are weakly continuous with respect to their parameter. We use this weakly continuous construction to provide an extension of the strong Markov property in which the flow …
In this paper we investigate the behavior of the bridges of a Markov counting process in several directions. We first characterize convexity(concavity) in time of the mean value in terms of lower (upper) bounds on the so called \textit{reciprocal characteristics}. This result gives a natural criterion to determine whether bridges are "lazy" or "hurried". Under the hypothesis of global bounds on the reciprocal characteristics we prove sharp estimates for the marginal distributions and a comparison theorem for the jump times. When the height of the bridge tends to infinity we show the convergenc…
For an arbitrary Hilbert space-valued Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process we construct the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck Bridge connecting a starting point $x$ and an endpoint $y$ that belongs to a certain linear subspace of full measure. We derive also a stochastic evolution equation satisfied by the OU Bridge and study its basic properties. The OU Bridge is then used to investigate the Markov transition semigroup associated to a nonlinear stochastic evolution equation with additive noise. We provide an explicit formula for the transition density and study its regularity. Given the Strong Feller property and the…
In this article we consider a family of real-valued diffusion processes on the time interval $[0,1]$ indexed by their prescribed initial value $x \in \mathbb{R}$ and another point in space, $y \in \mathbb{R}$. We first present an easy-to-check condition on their drift and diffusion coefficients ensuring that the diffusion is pinned in $y$ at time $t=1$. Our main result then concerns the following question: can this family of pinned diffusions be obtained as the bridges either of a Gaussian Markov process or of an Itô diffusion? We eventually illustrate our precise answer with several examples.
Let $X$ be a Markov process taking values in $\mathbf{E}$ with continuous paths and transition function $(P_{s,t})$. Given a measure $μ$ on $(\mathbf{E}, \mathscr{E})$, a Markov bridge starting at $(s,\varepsilon_x)$ and ending at $(T^*,μ)$ for $T^* <\infty$ has the law of the original process starting at $x$ at time $s$ and conditioned to have law $μ$ at time $T^*$. We will consider two types of conditioning: a) {\em weak conditioning} when $μ$ is absolutely continuous with respect to $P_{s,t}(x,\cdot)$ and b) {\em strong conditioning} when $μ=\varepsilon_z$ for some $z \in \mathbf{E}$. The m…
We consider the filtering problem of estimating a hidden random variable $X$ by noisy observations. The noisy observation process is constructed by a randomised Markov bridge (RMB) $(Z_t)_{t\in [0,T]}$ of which terminal value is set to $Z_T=X$. That is, at the terminal time $T$, the noise of the bridge process vanishes and the hidden random variable $X$ is revealed. We derive the explicit filtering formula, governing the dynamics of the conditional probability process, for a general RMB. It turns out that the conditional probability is given by a function of current time $t$, the current obser…
Conditions on the generator of a Markov process to control the fluctuations of its bridges are found. In particular, continuous time random walks on graphs and gradient diffusions are considered. Under these conditions, a concentration of measure inequality for the marginals of the bridge of a gradient diffusion and refined large deviation expansions for the tails of a random walk on a graph are derived. In contrast with the existing literature about bridges, all the estimates we obtain hold for non asymptotic time scales. New concentration of measure inequalities for pinned Poisson random vec…
We prove that if the Markov generator of a diffusion process satisfies the two step strong Hörmander condition, the conditioned hypoelliptic bridge satisfies an integral bound and is a continuous semi-martingale.
Given a Markovian Brownian martingale $Z$, we build a process $X$ which is a martingale in its own filtration and satisfies $X_1 = Z_1$. We call $X$ a dynamic bridge, because its terminal value $Z_1$ is not known in advance. We compute explicitly its semimartingale decomposition under both its own filtration $\cF^X$ and the filtration $\cF^{X,Z}$ jointly generated by $X$ and $Z$. Our construction is heavily based on parabolic PDE's and filtering techniques. As an application, we explicitly solve an equilibrium model with insider trading, that can be viewed as a non-Gaussian generalization of B…
We propose a discrete time discrete space Markov chain approximation with a Brownian bridge correction for computing curvilinear boundary crossing probabilities of a general diffusion process on a finite time interval. For broad classes of curvilinear boundaries and diffusion processes, we prove the convergence of the constructed approximations in the form of products of the respective substochastic matrices to the boundary crossing probabilities for the process as the time grid used to construct the Markov chains is getting finer. Numerical results indicate that the convergence rate for the p…
This is a survey paper about reciprocal processes. The bridges of a Markov process are also Markov. But an arbitrary mixture of these bridges fails to be Markov in general. However, it still enjoys the interesting properties of a reciprocal process. The structures of Markov and reciprocal processes are recalled with emphasis on their time-symmetries. A review of the main properties of the reciprocal processes is presented. Our measure-theoretical approach allows for a unified treatment of the diffusion and jump processes. Abstract results are illustrated by several examples and counter-example…
Quadratic harnesses are typically non-homogeneous Markov processes with time-dependent state space. Using an appropriately defined affine transformation we show that all bridges of a given quadratic harness can be transformed into other standard quadratic harnesses. Conversely, each such bridge is an affine transformation of a standard quadratic harness. We describe quadratic harnesses that correspond to bridges of some Levy processes. We determine all quadratic harnesses that may arise from stitching together a pair of q-Meixner processes.
First we give a construction of bridges derived from a general Markov process using only its transition densities. We give sufficient conditions for their existence and uniqueness (in law). Then we prove that the law of the radial part of the bridge with endpoints zero derived from a special multidimensional Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process equals the law of the bridge with endpoints zero derived from the radial part of the same Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process. We also construct bridges derived from general multidimensional Ornstein-Uhlenbeck processes.
We present a class of Gauss-Markov processes which can be represented as space-time scaled stationary Ornstein-Uhlenbeck processes defined on the real line. We give several explicit examples of the representation for certain Gauss bridge processes. As an application, we derive a formula for the density function of the supremum location of certain standardized Gauss-Markov processes on compact time intervals. We also present some sufficient conditions under which mean centered Gauss-Markov processes take zero at a fixed time with probability one.
We generalize the notion of Gaussian bridges by conditioning Gaussian processes given that certain linear functionals of the sample paths vanish. We show the equivalence of the laws of the unconditioned and the conditioned process and by an application of Girsanov's theorem, we show that the conditioned process follows a stochastic differential equation (SDE) whenever the unconditioned process does. In the Markovian case, we are able to determine the coefficients in the SDE of the conditioned process explicitly. Our main example is Brownian motion on $[0,1]$ pinned down in 0 at time 1 and cond…
We consider a two-node tandem queueing network in which the upstream queue is M/G/1 and each job reuses its upstream service requirement when moving to the downstream queue. Both servers employ the first-in-first-out policy. We investigate the amount of work in the second queue at certain embedded arrival time points, namely when the upstream queue has just emptied. We focus on the case of infinite-variance service times and obtain a heavy traffic process limit for the embedded Markov chain.
In the present paper we show that for any given digraph $\mathbb{G} =([n], \vec{E})$, i.e. an oriented graph without self-loops and 2-cycles, one can construct a 1-dependent Markov chain and $n$ identically distributed hitting times $T_1, \ldots , T_n $ on this chain such that the probability of the event $T_i > T_j $, for any $i, j = 1, \ldots n$, is larger than $\frac{1}{2}$ if and only if $(i,j)\in \vec{E}$. This result is related to various paradoxes in probability theory, concerning in particular non-transitive dice.
Let $(ξ_j)_{j\ge1} $, be a non-stationary Markov chain with phase space $X$ and let $\mathfrak{g}_j:\,X\mapsto\mathrm{SL}(m,\mathbb{R})$ be a sequence of functions on $X$ with values in the unimodular group. Set $g_j=\mathfrak{g}_j(ξ_j)$ and denote by $S_n=g_n\ldots g_1$, the product of the matrices $g_j$. We provide sufficient conditions for exponential growth of the norm $\|S_n\|$ when the Markov chain is not supposed to be stationary. This generalizes the classical theorem of Furstenberg on the exponential growth of products of independent identically distributed matrices as well as its ext…
Let $\{X_n\}_{n\in\N}$ be a Markov chain on a measurable space $\X$ with transition kernel $P$ and let $V:\X\r[1,+\infty)$. The Markov kernel $P$ is here considered as a linear bounded operator on the weighted-supremum space $\cB_V$ associated with $V$. Then the combination of quasi-compactness arguments with precise analysis of eigen-elements of $P$ allows us to estimate the geometric rate of convergence $ρ_V(P)$ of $\{X_n\}_{n\in\N}$ to its invariant probability measure in operator norm on $\cB_V$. A general procedure to compute $ρ_V(P)$ for discrete Markov random walks with identically dist…
The transition law of every exchangeable Feller process on the space of countable graphs is determined by a $σ$-finite measure on the space of $\{0,1\}\times\{0,1\}$-valued arrays. In discrete-time, this characterization amounts to a construction from an independent, identically distributed sequence of exchangeable random functions. In continuous-time, the behavior is enriched by a Lévy--Itô-type decomposition of the jump measure into mutually singular components that govern global, vertex-level, and edge-level dynamics. Furthermore, every such process almost surely projects to a Feller proces…
Let $(S,ρ)$ be an ultrametric space with certain conditions and $S^k$ be the quotient space of $S$ with respect to the partition by balls with a fixed radius $ϕ(k)$. We prove that, for a Hunt process $X$ on $S$ associated with a Dirichlet form $(\mathcal E, \mathcal F)$, a Hunt process $X^k$ on $S^k$ associated with the averaged Dirichlet form $(\mathcal E^k, \mathcal F^k)$ is Mosco convergent to $X$, and under certain additional conditions, $X^k$ converges weakly to $X$. Moreover, we give a sufficient condition for the Markov property of $X$ to be preserved under the canonical projection $π^k…
The goal of this paper is to simplify and strengthen the Le Jan-Qian approximation scheme of studying the uniqueness of signature problem to the non-Markov setting. We establish a general framework for a class of multidimensional stochastic processes over [0,1] under which with probability one, the signature (the collection of iterated path integrals in the sense of rough paths) is well-defined and determines the sample paths of the process up to reparametrization. In particular, by using the Malliavin calculus we show that our method applies to a class of Gaussian processes including fraction…
A study of time homogeneous, real valued Markov processes with a special property and a non-atomic initial distribution is provided. The new notion of a function of evolution of distribution which determines the dependency between one dimensional distributions of a process is introduced. This, along with the notion of bridge operators which determine the backward structure, as opposed to the forward structure determined by the usual semi-group operators, paves a way to the new approach for dealing with finite-dimensional distributions of Markov processes. This, in particular, produces explicit…
We study the analogue of Poisson ensembles of Markov loops ('loop soups') in the setting of one-dimensional diffusions. We give a detailed description of the corresponding intensity measure. The properties of this measure on loops lead us to an extension of Vervaat's bridge-to-excursion transformation that relates the bridges conditioned by their minimum and the excursions of all the diffusion we consider and not just the Brownian motion. Further we describe the Poisson point process of loops, their occupation fields and explain how to sample these Poisson ensembles of loops using two-dimensio…
An efficient discrete time and space Markov chain approximation employing a Brownian bridge correction for computing curvilinear boundary crossing probabilities for general diffusion processes was recently proposed in Liang and Borovkov (2021). One of the advantages of that method over alternative approaches is that it can be readily extended to computing expectations of path-dependent functionals over the event of the process trajectory staying between two curvilinear boundaries. In the present paper, we extend the scheme to compute expectations of the Feynman--Kac type that frequently appear…
In this paper, we introduce an extension of a Brownian bridge with a random length by including uncertainty also in the pinning level of the bridge. The main result of this work is that unlike for deterministic pinning point, the bridge process fails to be Markovian if the pining point distribution is absolutely continuous with respect to the Lebesgue measure. Further results include the derivation of formulae to calculate the conditional expectation of various functions of the random pinning time, the random pinning location, and the future value of the Brownian bridge, given an observation o…
We provide simplified proofs for the asymptotic distribution of the number of cuts required to cut down a Galton-Watson tree with critical, finite-variance offspring distribution, conditioned to have total progeny $n$. Our proof is based on a coupling which yields a precise, nonasymptotic distributional result for the case of uniformly random rooted labeled trees (or, equivalently, Poisson Galton-Watson trees conditioned on their size). Our approach also provides a new, random reversible transformation between Brownian excursion and Brownian bridge.
We study a fairly general class of time-homogeneous stochastic evolutions driven by noises that are not white in time. As a consequence, the resulting processes do not have the Markov property. In this setting, we obtain constructive criteria for the uniqueness of stationary solutions that are very close in spirit to the existing criteria for Markov processes. In the case of discrete time, where the driving noise consists of a stationary sequence of Gaussian random variables, we give optimal conditions on the spectral measure for our criteria to be applicable. In particular, we show that under…

We propose a method to exactly generate bridge run-and-tumble trajectories that are constrained to start at the origin with a given velocity and to return to the origin after a fixed time with another given velocity. The method extends the concept of effective Langevin equations, valid for Markovian stochastic processes such as Brownian motion, to a non-Markovian stochastic process driven by a telegraphic noise, with exponentially decaying correlations. We obtain effective space-time dependent tumbling rates that implicitly accounts for the bridge constraint. We extend the method to other type…
