Let $(S,ρ)$ be an ultrametric space with certain conditions and $S^k$ be the quotient space of $S$ with respect to the partition by balls with a fixed radius $ϕ(k)$. We prove that, for a Hunt process $X$ on $S$ associated with a Dirichlet form $(\mathcal E, \mathcal F)$, a Hunt process $X^k$ on $S^k$ associated with the averaged Dirichlet form $(\mathcal E^k, \mathcal F^k)$ is Mosco convergent to $X$, and under certain additional conditions, $X^k$ converges weakly to $X$. Moreover, we give a sufficient condition for the Markov property of $X$ to be preserved under the canonical projection $π^k$ to $S^k$. In this case, we see that the projected process $π^k\circ X$ is identical in law to $X^k$ and converges weakly to $X$.
Gaussian random field on general ultrametric space is introduced as a solution of pseudodifferential stochastic equation. Covariation of the introduced random field is computed with the help of wavelet analysis on ultrametric spaces. Notion of ultrametric Markovianity, which describes independence of contributions to random field from different ultrametric balls is introduced. We show that the random field under investigation satisfies this property.
Kingman (1978)'s representation theorem states that any exchangeable partition of $\mathbb{N}$ can be represented as a paintbox based on a random mass-partition. Similarly, any exchangeable composition (i.e. ordered partition of $\mathbb{N}$) can be represented as a paintbox based on an interval-partition (Gnedin 1997). Our first main result is that any exchangeable coalescent process (not necessarily Markovian) can be represented as a paintbox based on a random non-decreasing process valued in interval-partitions, called nested interval-partition, generalizing the notion of comb metric space …
We obtain universal estimates on the convergence to equilibrium and the times of coupling for continuous time irreducible reversible finite-state Markov chains, both in the total variation and in the L^2 norms. The estimates in total variation norm are obtained using a novel identity relating the convergence to equilibrium of a reversible Markov chain to the increase in the entropy of its one-dimensional distributions. In addition, we propose a universal way of defining the ultrametric partition structure on the state space of such Markov chains. Finally, for chains reversible with respect to …
We study the induced measure obtained from a 1-step Markov measure, supported by a topological Markov chain, after the mapping of the original alphabet onto another one. We give sufficient conditions for the induced measure to be a Gibbs measure (in the sense of Bowen) when the factor system is again a topological Markov chain. This amounts to constructing, when it does exist, the induced potential and proving its Holder continuity. This is achieved through a matrix method. We provide examples and counterexamples to illustrate our results.
The goal of this paper is threefold. First, we survey the existing results on Hunt's hypothesis (H) for Markov processes and Getoor's conjecture for Lévy processes. Second, we investigate (H) for multidimensional Lévy processes from the viewpoints of projections and energy, respectively. Third, we present a few open questions for further study.
Stochastic approximation is a framework unifying many random iterative algorithms occurring in a diverse range of applications. The stability of the process is often difficult to verify in practical applications and the process may even be unstable without additional stabilisation techniques. We study a stochastic approximation procedure with expanding projections similar to Andradóttir [Oper. Res. 43 (1995) 1037-1048]. We focus on Markovian noise and show the stability and convergence under general conditions. Our framework also incorporates the possibility to use a random step size sequence,…
Consider the Aldous Markov chain on the space of rooted binary trees with $n$ labeled leaves in which at each transition a uniform random leaf is deleted and reattached to a uniform random edge. Now, fix $1\le k < n$ and project the leaf mass onto the subtree spanned by the first $k$ leaves. This yields a binary tree with edge weights that we call a "decorated $k$-tree with total mass $n$." We introduce label swapping dynamics for the Aldous chain so that, when it runs in stationarity, the decorated $k$-trees evolve as Markov chains themselves, and are projectively consistent over $k\le n$. Th…
Let $X$ and $Y$ denote two independent squared Bessel processes of dimension $m$ and $n-m$, respectively, with $n\geq 2$ and $m \in [0, n)$, making $X+Y$ a squared Bessel process of dimension $n$. For appropriately chosen function $s$, the process $s (X+Y)$ is a local martingale. We study the representation and the dynamics of $s(X+Y)$, projected on the filtration generated by $X$. This projection is a strict supermartingale if, and only if, $m<2$. The finite-variation term in its Doob-Meyer decomposition only charges the support of the Markov local time of $X$ at zero.
We present a satisfactory definition of the important class of Lévy processes indexed by a general collection of sets. We use a new definition for increment stationarity of set-indexed processes to obtain different characterizations of this class. As an example, the set-indexed compound Poisson process is introduced. The set-indexed Lévy process is characterized by infinitely divisible laws and a Lévy-Khintchine representation. Moreover, the following concepts are discussed: projections on flows, Markov properties, and pointwise continuity. Finally the study of sample paths leads to a Lévy-Itô…
In this paper we obtain skew-product representations of the multidimensional Dunkl processes which generalize the skew-product decomposition in dimension 1 obtained in L. Gallardo and M. Yor. Some remarkable properties of the Dunkl martingales. Séminaire de Probabilités XXXIX, 2006. We also study the radial part of the Dunkl process, i.e. the projection of the Dunkl process on a Weyl chamber.
We introduce the exit time finite state projection (ETFSP) scheme, a truncation-based method that yields approximations to the exit distribution and occupation measure associated with the time of exit from a domain (i.e., the time of first passage to the complement of the domain) of time-homogeneous continuous-time Markov chains. We prove that: (i) the computed approximations bound the measures from below; (ii) the total variation distances between the approximations and the measures decrease monotonically as states are added to the truncation; and (iii) the scheme converges, in the sense that…
Recently, Diaconis, Ram and I created Markov chains out of the coproduct-then-product operator on combinatorial Hopf algebras. These chains model the breaking and recombining of combinatorial objects. Our motivating example was the riffle-shuffling of a deck of cards, for which this Hopf algebra connection allowed explicit computation of all the eigenfunctions. The present note replaces in this construction the coproduct-then-product map with convolutions of projections to the graded subspaces, effectively allowing us to dictate the distribution of sizes of the pieces in the breaking step of t…
Let $\mathbf{X}=(\mathbf{X}_t)_{t \geq 0}$ be a stochastic process issued from $x \in \mathbb R$ that admits a marginal stationary measure $ν$, i.e. $ν\mathbf{P}_t f = νf$ for all $t \geq 0$, where $\mathbf{P}_t f(x)= \mathbb{E}_x[f(\mathbf{X}_t)]$. In this paper, we introduce the (resp. biorthogonal) spectral projections correlation functions which are expressed in terms of projections into the eigenspaces of $\mathbf{P}_t$ (resp. and of its adjoint in the weighted Hilbert space $L^2(ν)$). We obtain closed-form expressions involving eigenvalues, the condition number and/or the angle between t…
Consider the standard stochastic reaction network model where the dynamics is given by a continuous-time Markov chain over a discrete lattice. For such models, estimation of parameter sensitivities is an important problem, but the existing computational approaches to solve this problem usually require time-consuming Monte Carlo simulations of the reaction dynamics. Therefore these simulation-based approaches can only be expected to work over finite time-intervals, while it is often of interest in applications to examine the sensitivity values at the steady-state after the Markov chain has rela…
A large class of linear memory differential equations in one dimension, where the evolution depends on the whole history, can be equivalently described as a projection of a Markov process living in a higher dimensional space. Starting with such a memory equation, we propose an explicit construction of the corresponding Markov process. From a physical point of view the Markov process can be understood as a change of the type of some quasiparticles along one-way loops. Typically, the arising Markov process does not have the detailed balance property. The method leads to a more realistic modeling…
In the present paper deals with asymptotical stability of Markov operators acting on abstract state spaces (i.e. an ordered Banach space, where the norm has an additivity property on the cone of positive elements). Basically, we are interested in the rate of convergence when a Markov operator $T$ satisfies the uniform $P$-ergodicity, i.e. $\|T^n-P\|\to 0$, here $P$ is a projection. We have showed that $T$ is uniformly $P$-ergodic if and only if $\|T^n-P\|\leq Cβ^n$, $0<β<1$. In this paper, we prove that such a $β$ is characterized by the spectral radius of $T-P$. Moreover, we give Deoblin's ki…
In our earlier paper, a generalized Dobrushin ergodicity coefficient of Markov operators (acting on abstract state spaces) with respect to a projection $P$, has been introduced and studied. It turned out that the introduced coefficient was more effective than the usual ergodicity coefficient. In the present work, by means of a left consistent Markov projections and the generalized Dobrushin's ergodicity coefficient, we investigate uniform and weak $P$-ergodicities of non-homogeneous discrete Markov chains (NDMC) on abstract state spaces. It is easy to show that uniform $P$-ergodicity implies a…
