Denote by (R,.) the multiplicative semigroup of an associative algebra R over an infinite field, and let (R,*) represent R when viewed as a semigroup via the circle operation x*y=x+y+xy. In this paper we characterize the existence of an identity in these semigroups in terms of the Lie structure of R. Namely, we prove that the following conditions on R are equivalent: the semigroup (R,*) satisfies an identity; the semigroup (R,.) satisfies a reduced identity; and, the associated Lie algebra of R satisfies the Engel condition. When R is finitely generated these conditions are each equivalent to R being upper Lie nilpotent.
It is known that there are Lie algebras with non-semigroup gradings, i.e. such that the binary operation on the grading set is not associative. We provide a similar example in the class of associative algebras.
In this paper, by using Gröbner-Shirshov bases, we show that in the following classes, each (resp. countably generated) algebra can be embedded into a simple (resp. two-generated) algebra: associative differential algebras, associative $Ω$-algebras, associative $λ$-differential algebras. We show that in the following classes, each countably generated algebra over a countable field $k$ can be embedded into a simple two-generated algebra: associative algebras, semigroups, Lie algebras, associative differential algebras, associative $Ω$-algebras, associative $λ$-differential algebras. Also we pro…
In this paper we construct free Hom-semigroups when its unary operation is multiplicative and is an involution. Our method of construction is by bracketed words. As a consequence, we obtain free Hom-associative algebras generated by a set under the same conditions for the unary operation.
Let $A=A(x_{1},...,x_{n})$ be a free associative algebra in $\mathcal{A}$ freely generated over $K$ by a set $X=\{x_{1},...,x_{n}\}$, $End A$ be the semigroup of endomorphisms of $A$, and $Aut End A$ be the group of automorphisms of the semigroup $End A$. We investigate the structure of the groups $Aut End A$ and $Aut \mathcal{A}^{\circ}$, where $\mathcal{A}^{\circ}$ is the category of finitely generated free algebras from $\mathcal{A}$. We prove that the group $Aut End A$ is generated by semi-inner and mirror automorphisms of $End F$ and the group $Aut \mathcal{A}^{\circ}$ is generated by sem…
A complete set of primitive orthogonal idempotents plays an important role in the representation theory of an associative algebra. In this paper, we construct a complete set of primitive orthogonal idempotents for any finite Brandt semigroup algebra.
For any $n$-ary associative algebra we construct a $\Z_{n-1}$ graded algebra, which is a universal object containing the $n$-ary algebra as a subspace of elements of degree 1. Similar construction is carried out for semigroups.
We study diverse parametrized versions of the operad of associative algebra, where the parameter are taken in an associative semigroup $Ω$ (generalization of matching or family associative algebras) or in its cartesian square (two-parameters associative algebras). We give a description of the free algebras on these operads, study their formal series and prove that they are Koszul when the set of parameters is finite. We also study operadic morphisms between the operad of classical associative algebras and these objects, and links with other types of algebras (diassociative, dendriform, post-Li…
We prove that a countable dimensional associative algebra (resp. a countable semigroup) of locally subexponential growth is $M_\infty$-embeddable as a left ideal in a finitely generated algebra (resp. semigroup) of subexponential growth. Moreover, we provide bounds for the growth of the finitely generated algebra (resp. semigroup). The proof is based on a new construction of matrix wreath product of algebras.
In this paper, we prove that the semigroups of invertible matrices with nonnegative elements over linearly oredered associative rings are elementarily equivalent if and only if the matrices have the same dimension and the rings are elementarily equivalent as ordered rings.
We introduce an embedding of the free magma on a set A into the direct product of the free magma on a singleton set and the free semigroup on A. This embedding is then used to prove several theorems related to algebraic independence of subsets of the free non-associative algebra on A. Among these theorems is a generalization of a result due to Kurosh, which states that every subalgebra of a free non-associative algebra is also free.
This is a survey paper on algorithms that have been developed during the last 25 years for the explicit computation of the structure of an associative algebra of finite dimension over either a finite field or an algebraic number field. This constructive approach was initiated in 1985 by Friedl and Ronyai and has since been developed by Cohen, de Graaf, Eberly, Giesbrecht, Ivanyos, Kuronya and Wales. I illustrate these algorithms with the case n = 2 of the rational semigroup algebra of the partial transformation semigroup PT_n on n elements; this generalizes the full transformation semigroup an…
We prove that if $S$ is a $le$-semigroup in which left ideal elements commute (condition which is called $\mathbfΛ$), then any $\mathcal{J}$-class satisfying the Green condition is a subsemigroup of $S$. As a corollary of this we show that semisimple $le$-semigroups satisfying $\mathbfΛ$ are precisely those that decompose as a semilattice of left simple $\vee e$-semigroups which are in addition semisimple, intra-regular and satisfy $\mathbfΛ$.
In this paper we study the structure of a class of algebras satisfying a polynomial identity of degree 6. We show, assuming the existence of a non-zero idempotent, that if an algebra satisfies such an identity, it admits a Peirce decomposition related to this idempotent. We studied the algebraic structure and highlighted the connections of the algebras of this class with Bernstein algebras, train algebras, Jordan algebras and power associative algebras. Keywords: Peirce decomposition, Bernstein algebra, Jordan algebra, Power associative algebra, train algebra, polynomial identity, idempotent.
We study Jordan-Lie inner ideals of finite dimensional associative algebras and the corresponding Lie algebras and prove that they admit Levi decompositions. Moreover, we classify Jordan-Lie inner ideals satisfying a certain minimality condition and show that they are generated by pairs of idempotents.
We realize Kellendonk'?s C*-algebra of an aperiodic tiling as the tight C*-algebra of the inverse semigroup associated to the tiling, thus providing further evidence that the tight C*-algebra is a good candidate to be the natural associative algebra to go along with an inverse semigroup.
We describe the representations of $(2,n)$-semigroups, i.e. groupoids with $n$ binary associative operations, by partial $n$-place functions and prove that any such representation is a union of some family of representations induced by Schein's determining pairs.
Loday's dendriform algebras and its siblings pre-Lie and zinbiel have received attention over the past two decades. In recent literature, there has been interest in a generalization of these types of algebra in which each individual operation is replaced by a family of operations indexed by a fixed semigroup $S$. The purpose of this note is twofold. First, we add to the existing work by showing that a similar extension is possible already for the most familiar types of algebra: commutative, associative, and Lie. Second, we show that these concepts arise naturally and in a unified manner from a…
We develop a combinatorial approach to the study of semigroups and monoids with finite presentations satisfying small overlap conditions. In contrast to existing geometric methods, our approach facilitates a sequential left-right analysis of words which lends itself to the development of practical, efficient computational algorithms. In particular, we obtain a highly practical linear time solution to the word problem for monoids and semigroups with finite presentations satisfying the condition C(4), and a polynomial time solution to the uniform word problem for presentations satisfying the sam…
We show that if $T$ is any of four semigroups of two elements that are not groups, there exists a finite dimensional associative $T$-graded algebra over a field of characteristic $0$ such that the codimensions of its graded polynomial identities have a non-integer exponent of growth. In particular, we provide an example of a finite dimensional graded-simple semigroup graded algebra over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $0$ with a non-integer graded PI-exponent, which is strictly less than the dimension of the algebra. However, if $T$ is a left or right zero band and the $T$-grad…
Let $A$ be an $n$-dimensional algebra over a field $k$ and $a(A)$ its quantum symmetry semigroup. We prove that the automorphisms group ${\rm Aut}_{\rm Alg} (A)$ of $A$ is isomorphic to the group $U \bigl( G(a (A)^{\rm o} ) \bigl)$ of all invertible group-like elements of the finite dual $a (A)^{\rm o}$. For a group $G$, all $G$-gradings on $A$ are explicitly described and classified: the set of isomorphisms classes of all $G$-gradings on $A$ is in bijection with the quotient set $ {\rm Hom}_{\rm BiAlg} \, \bigl( a (A) , \, k[G] \bigl)/\approx$ of all bialgebra maps $a (A) \, \to k[G]$, via th…
Let $L$ be a finite dimensional Lie $F$-algebra endowed with a generalized action by an associative algebra $H$. We investigate the exponential growth rate of the sequence of $H$-graded codimensions $c_n^H(L)$ of $L$ which is a measure for the number of non-polynomial $H$-identities of $L$. More precisely, we construct the first example of an $S$-graded Lie algebra having a non-integer, even irrational, exponential growth rate $\lim_{n\rightarrow \infty} \sqrt[n]{c_n^{S}(L)}$. Hereby $S$ is a semigroup and an exact value is given. On the other hand, returning to general $H$, if $L$ is semisimp…
Last years a number of papers were devoted to describing automorphisms of semigroups of endomorphisms of free finitely generated universal algebras of some varieties: groups, semigroups, associative commutative algebras, inverse semigroups, modules, Lie algebras and some others. All these researches were inspired by the questions prof. B. Plotkin set in connection with so called universal algebraic geometry (see for example Arxiv:math, GM/0204245). The aim of this paper is to suggest a method of describing the group AutEnd(F) for a free finitely generated algebra F of an arbitrary variety of u…
Considering a Poisson algebra as a non associative algebra satisfying the Markl-Remm identity, we study deformations of Poisson algebras as deformations of this non associative algebra. This gives a natural interpretation of deformations which preserves the underlying associative structure and we study deformations which preserve the underlying Lie algebra.
We consider homogeneous varieties of linear algebras over an associative-commutative ring K with 1, i.e., the varieties in which free algebras are graded. Let F be a free algebra of some variety A of linear algebras over K freely generated by a finite set X, EndF be the semigroup of endomorphisms of F, and AutEndF be the group of automorphisms of the semigroup EndF. We investigate structure of the group AutEndF and its relation to the algebraical and categorical equivalence of algebras from A. We define a wide class of R1MF-domains containing, in particular, Bezout domains, unique factorizatio…
We describe subalgebras of the Lie algebra $\mf{gl}(n^2)$ that contain all inner derivations of $A=M_n(F)$ (where $n\ge 5$ and $F$ is an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0). In a more general context where $A$ is a prime algebra satisfying certain technical restrictions, we establish a density theorem for the associative algebra generated by all inner derivations of $A$.
Let $X$ be a nonempty set. Denote by $\mathcal{F}^n_k$ the class of associative operations $F\colon X^n\to X$ satisfying the condition $F(x_1,\ldots,x_n)\in\{x_1,\ldots,x_n\}$ whenever at least $k$ of the elements $x_1,\ldots,x_n$ are equal to each other. The elements of $\mathcal{F}^n_1$ are said to be quasitrivial and those of $\mathcal{F}^n_n$ are said to be idempotent. We show that $\mathcal{F}^n_1=\cdots =\mathcal{F}^n_{n-2}\subseteq\mathcal{F}^n_{n-1}\subseteq\mathcal{F}^n_n$ and we give conditions on the set $X$ for the last inclusions to be strict. The class $\mathcal{F}^n_1$ was recen…
The complex algebra of an inverse semigroup with finitely many idempotents in each $\mathcal D$-class is stably finite by a result of Munn. This can be proved fairly easily using $C^*$-algebras for inverse semigroups satisfying this condition that have a Hausdorff universal groupoid, or more generally for direct limits of inverse semigroups satisfying this condition and having Hausdorff universal groupoids. It is not difficult to see that a finitely presented inverse semigroup with a non-Hausdorff universal groupoid cannot be a direct limit of inverse semigroups with Hausdorff universal groupo…
Metabelian algebras are introduced and it is shown that an algebra $A$ is metabelian if and only if $A$ is a nilpotent algebra having the index of nilpotency at most $3$, i.e. $x y z t = 0$, for all $x$, $y$, $z$, $t \in A$. We prove that the Itô's theorem for groups remains valid for associative algebras. A structure theorem for metabelian algebras is given in terms of pure linear algebra tools and their classification from the view point of the extension problem is proven. Two border-line cases are worked out in detail: all metabelian algebras having the derived algebra of dimension $1$ (res…
We introduce the notion of Groebner S-basis of an ideal of the free associative algebra K<X> over a field K invariant under the action of a semigroup S of endomorphisms of the algebra. We calculate the Groebner S-bases of the ideal corresponding to the universal enveloping algebra of the free nilpotent of class 2 Lie algebra and of the T-ideal generated by the polynomial identity [x,y,z]=0, with respect to suitable semigroups S. In the latter case, if |X|>2, the ordinary Groebner basis is infinite and our Groebner S-basis is finite. We obtain also explicit minimal Groebner bases of these ideal…
We give a review of recent works for non-associative algebras, especially Lie algebras satisfying the triality relation. They are also intimately related to S_4 (symmetric group of 4-objects) symmetry of the Lie algebras.
We describe the automorphism group of the endomorphism semigroup $\End(K[x_1,...,x_n])$ of ring $K[x_1,...,x_n]$ of polynomials over an {\it arbitrary} field $K$. A similar result is obtained for automorphism group of the category of finitely generated free commutative-associative algebras of the variety $\mathcal{CA}$ commutative algebras. This solves two problems posed by B. Plotkin (\cite{24}, Problems 12 and 15). More precisely, we prove that if $φ\in \Aut\End(K[x_1,...,x_n])$ then there exists a semi-linear automorphism $s:K[x_1,...,x_n]\to K[x_1,...,x_n]$ such that $φ(g)=s\circ g\circ s^…
Generalizations of the series exp and log to noncommutative non-associative and other types of algebras were considered by M.Lazard, and recently by V.Drensky and L.Gerritzen. There is a unique power series exp(x) in one non-associative variable x such that exp(x)exp(x)=exp(2x), exp'(0)=1. We call the unique series H=H(x,y) in two non-associative variables satisfying exp(H)=exp(x)exp(y) the non-associative Hausdorff series, and we show that the homogeneous components of H are primitive elements with respect to the co-addition for non-associative variables. We describe the space of primitive el…
A variety of associative algebras over a field of characteristic 0 is called minimal if its codimension sequence grows much faster than the codimension sequence of any of its proper subvarieties. By the results of Giambruno and Zaicev it follows that the number $b_n$ of minimal varieties of given exponent $n$ is finite. Using methods of the theory of colored (or weighted) compositions of integers, we show that the limit $β=\lim_{n\to\infty}\sqrt[n]{b_n}$ exists and can be expressed as the positive solution of an equation $a(t)=0$ where $a(t)$ is an explicitly given power series. Similar result…
A central extension is a regular epimorphism in a Barr exact category $\mathscr{C}$ satisfying suitable conditions involving a given Birkhoff subcategory of $\mathscr{C}$ (joint work with G. M. Kelly, 1994). In this paper we take $\mathscr{C}$ to be the category of (not-necessarily-unital) algebras over a (unital) commutative ring and consider central extensions with respect to the category of commutative algebras. We propose a new approach that avoids the intermediate notion of central extension due to A. Fröhlich in showing that $α:A\to B$ is a central extension if and only if $aa'=a'a$ for …
Let $K$ be a commutative ring with unit and $S$ an inverse semigroup. We show that the semigroup algebra $KS$ can be described as a convolution algebra of functions on the universal étale groupoid associated to $S$ by Paterson. This result is a simultaneous generalization of the author's earlier work on finite inverse semigroups and Paterson's theorem for the universal $C^*$-algebra. It provides a convenient topological framework for understanding the structure of $KS$, including the center and when it has a unit. In this theory, the role of Gelfand duality is replaced by Stone duality. Using …
A new tropical plactic algebra is introduced in which the Knuth relations are inferred from the underlying semiring arithmetics, encapsulating the ubiquitous plactic monoid $\mathcal{P}_n$. This algebra manifests a natural framework for accommodating representations of $\mathcal{P}_n$, or equivalently of Young tableaux, and its moderate coarsening -- the cloaktic monoid $\mathcal{K}_n$ and the co-cloaktic $ ^{\operatorname{co}}\mathcal{K}_n$. The faithful linear representations of $\mathcal{K}_n$ and $\, ^{\operatorname{co}} \mathcal{K}_n$ by tropical matrices, which constitute a tropical plac…
This paper studies operator forms of the nonhomogeneous associative classical Yang-Baxter equation (nhacYBe), extending and generalizing such studies for the classical Yang-Baxter equation and associative Yang-Baxter equation that can be tracked back to the works of Semonov-Tian-Shansky and Kupershmidt on Rota-Baxter Lie algebras and $\mathcal{O}$-operators. In general, solutions of the nhacYBe are characterized in terms of generalized $\mathcal{O}$-operators. The characterization can be given by the classical $\mathcal{O}$-operators precisely when the solutions satisfy an invariant condition.…
