Generalizations of the series exp and log to noncommutative non-associative and other types of algebras were considered by M.Lazard, and recently by V.Drensky and L.Gerritzen. There is a unique power series exp(x) in one non-associative variable x such that exp(x)exp(x)=exp(2x), exp'(0)=1.
We call the unique series H=H(x,y) in two non-associative variables satisfying exp(H)=exp(x)exp(y) the non-associative Hausdorff series, and we show that the homogeneous components of H are primitive elements with respect to the co-addition for non-associative variables. We describe the space of primitive elements for the co-addition in non-associative variables using Taylor expansion and a projector onto the algebra A_0 of constants for the partial derivations. By a theorem of Kurosh, A_0 is a free algebra. We describe a procedure to construct a free algebra basis consisting of primitive elements.
We address the problem of constructing the non-associative version of the Dynkin form of the Baker-Campbell-Hausdorff formula; that is, expressing $\log (\exp (x)\exp(y))$, where $x$ and $y$ are non-associative variables, in terms of the Shestakov-Umirbaev primitive operations. In particular, we obtain a recursive expression for the Magnus expansion of the Baker-Campbell-Hausdorff series and an explicit formula in degrees smaller than 5. Our main tool is a non-associative version of the Dynkin-Specht-Wever Lemma. A construction of Bernouilli numbers in terms of binary trees is also recovered.

In this paper, homological methods together with the theory of formal languages of theoretical computer science are proved to be effective tools to determine the growth and the Hilbert series of an associative algebra. Namely, we construct a class of finitely presented associative algebras related to a family of context-free languages. This allows us to connect the Hilbert series of these algebras with the generating functions of such languages. In particular, we obtain a class of finitely presented graded algebras with non-rational algebraic Hilbert series.
We give an accessible introduction into the theory of lower central series of associative algebras, exhibiting the interplay between algebra, geometry and representation theory that is characteristic for this subject, and to discuss some open questions. In particular, we provide shorter and clearer proofs of the main results of this theory. We also discuss some new theoretical and computational results and conjectures on the lower central series of the free algebra in two generators modulo a generic homogeneous relation.
This paper concerns the associative lower central series ideals $M_i$ of the free algebra $A_n$ on $n$ generators. Namely, we study the successive quotients $N_i=M_i/M_{i+1}$, which admit an action of the Lie algebra $W_n$ of vector fields on $\Bbb C^n$. We bound the degree $|λ|$ of tensor field modules $F_λ$ appearing in the Jordan-Hölder series of each $N_i$, confirming a recent conjecture of Arbesfeld and Jordan. As an application, we compute these decompositions for small $n$ and $i$.
We continue the study of the lower central series L_i(A) and its successive quotients B_i(A) of a noncommutative associative algebra A, defined by L_1(A)=A, L_{i+1}(A)=[A,L_i(A)], and B_i(A)=L_i(A)/L_{i+1}(A). We describe B_{2}(A) for A a quotient of the free algebra on two or three generators by the two-sided ideal generated by a generic homogeneous element. We prove that it is isomorphic to a certain quotient of Kaehler differentials on the non-smooth variety associated to the abelianization of A.
A new algorithm for computing coefficients of the Baker--Campbell--Hausdorff series is presented, which can be straightforwardly implemented in any general-purpose programming language or computer algebra system. The algorithm avoids rational arithmetic and performs all its calculations in pure integer arithmetic, allowing for a very efficient implementation. An implementation in the Julia programming language is available.
We continue the study of the lower central series and its associated graded components for a free associative algebra with n generators, as initiated by B. Feigin and B. Shoikhet. We establish a linear bound on the degree of tensor field modules appearing in the Jordan-Hoelder series of each graded component, which is conjecturally tight. We also bound the leading coefficient of the Hilbert polynomial of each graded component. As applications, we confirm conjectures of P. Etingof and B. Shoikhet concerning the structure of the third graded component.
We classify finite dimensional division real associative $\mathcal{Z}_2$-algebras, introduce composition $\mathcal{Z}_2$-algebras, and extend the Campbell-Baker-Hausdorff series and Lie correspondence in the context of linear Hu-Liu Leibniz algebras.
Feigin and Shoikhet conjectured in math/0610410 that successive quotients $B_m(A_n)$ of the lower central series filtration of a free associative algebra $A_n$ have polynomial growth. In this paper we give a proof of this conjecture, using the structure of $W_n$-representation on $B_m(A_n)$ which was defined in math/0610410 . We also prove that the number of squares in a Young diagram $D$ corresponding to an irreducible $W_n$-module in the Jordan-Holder series of $B_m(A_n)$ is bounded above by the integer $(m-1)^2+2[(n-2)/2](m-1)$. This bound combined with MAGMA computations by Rains in math/0…
The lower central series invariants M_k of an associative algebra A are the two-sided ideals generated by k-fold iterated commutators; the M_k provide a filtration of A. We study the relationship between the geometry of X = Spec A_ab and the associated graded components N_k of this filtration. We show that the N_k form coherent sheaves on a certain nilpotent thickening of X, and that Zariski localization on X coincides with noncommutative localization of A. Under certain freeness assumptions on A, we give an alternative construction of N_k purely in terms of the geometry of X (and in particula…
Given a finite, simple, vertex-weighted graph, we construct a graded associative (non-commutative) algebra, whose generators correspond to vertices and whose ideal of relations has generators that are graded commutators corresponding to edges. We show that the Hilbert series of this algebra is the inverse of the clique polynomial of the graph. Using this result it easy to recognize if the ideal is inert, from which strong results on the algebra follow. Non-commutative Grobner bases play an important role in our proof. There is an interesting application to toric topology. This algebra arises n…
We study diverse parametrized versions of the operad of associative algebra, where the parameter are taken in an associative semigroup $Ω$ (generalization of matching or family associative algebras) or in its cartesian square (two-parameters associative algebras). We give a description of the free algebras on these operads, study their formal series and prove that they are Koszul when the set of parameters is finite. We also study operadic morphisms between the operad of classical associative algebras and these objects, and links with other types of algebras (diassociative, dendriform, post-Li…
We introduce non-associative Ore extensions, $S = R[X ; σ, δ]$, for any non-associative unital ring $R$ and any additive maps $σ,δ: R \rightarrow R$ satisfying $σ(1)=1$ and $δ(1)=0$. In the special case when $δ$ is either left or right $R_δ$-linear, where $R_δ = \ker(δ)$, and $R$ is $δ$-simple, i.e. $\{ 0 \}$ and $R$ are the only $δ$-invariant ideals of $R$, we determine the ideal structure of the non-associative differential polynomial ring $D = R[X ; \mathrm{id}_R , δ]$. Namely, in that case, we show that all ideals of $D$ are generated by monic polynomials in the center $Z(D)$ of $D$. We al…
For the computation of terms of the Baker-Campbell-Hausdorff series $H = \log(e^Ae^B})$ some a priori knowledge about the denominators of the coefficients of the series can be beneficial. In this paper an explicit formula for the computation of common denominators for the rational coefficients of the homogeneous components of the series is derived. Explicit computations up to degree 30 show that the common denominators obtained by this formula are as small as possible, which suggests that the formula is in a sense optimal. The sequence of integers defined by the formula seems to be interesting…
This manual describes bch, an efficient program written in the C programming language for the fast computation of the Baker-Campbell-Hausdorff (BCH) and similar Lie series. The Lie series can be represented in the Lyndon basis, in the classical Hall basis, or in the right-normed basis of E.S. Chibrikov. In the Lyndon basis, which proves to be particularly efficient for this purpose, the computation of 111013 coefficients for the BCH series up to terms of degree 20 takes less than half a second on an ordinary personal computer and requires negligible 11MB of memory. Up to terms of degree 30, wh…
A variety of associative algebras over a field of characteristic 0 is called minimal if its codimension sequence grows much faster than the codimension sequence of any of its proper subvarieties. By the results of Giambruno and Zaicev it follows that the number $b_n$ of minimal varieties of given exponent $n$ is finite. Using methods of the theory of colored (or weighted) compositions of integers, we show that the limit $β=\lim_{n\to\infty}\sqrt[n]{b_n}$ exists and can be expressed as the positive solution of an equation $a(t)=0$ where $a(t)$ is an explicitly given power series. Similar result…
The non-associative exponential series $exp(x)$ is a power series with monomials from the magma $M$ of finite, planar rooted trees. The coefficient $a(t)$ of $exp(x)$ relative to a tree $t$ of degree $n$ is a rational number and it is shown that $$\hat{a}(t) := \frac{a(t)}{2^{n-1}\cdot \prod^{n-1}_{i=1}(2^i - 1)}$$ is an integer which is a product of Mersenne binomials. One obtains summation formulas $$\sum \hat{a}(t) = ω(n)$$ where the sum is extended over all trees $t$ in $M$ of degree $n$ and $$ω(n) = \frac{2^{n-1}}{n!} \prod^{n-1}_{i=1} (2^i - 1).$$ The prime factorization of $ω(n)$ is des…
We study a structure of the group of unitriangular automorphisms of a free associative algebra and a polynomial algebra and prove that this group is a semi direct product of abelian groups. Using this decomposition we describe a structure of the lower central series and the series of derived subgroups for the group of unitriangular automorphisms and prove that every element from the derived subgroup is a commutator. In addition we prove that the group of unitriangular automorphisms of a free associative algebra of rang more than 2 is not linear and describe some two-generated subgroups from th…
The purpose of this paper is to discuss the universal algebra theory of hom-algebras. This kind of algebra involves a linear map which twists the usual identities. We focus on hom-associative algebras and hom-Lie algebras for which we review the main results. We discuss the envelopment problem, operads, and the Diamond Lemma; the usual tools have to be adapted to this new situation. Moreover we study Hilbert series for the hom-associative operad and free algebra, and describe them up to total degree equal 8 and 9 respectively.
For a commutative algebra which comes from a Zinbiel algebra the exponential series can be written without denominators. When lifted to dendriform algebras this new series satisfies a functional equation analogous to the Baker-Campbell-Hausdorff formula. We make it explicit by showing that the obstruction series is the sum of the brace products. In the multilinear case we show that the role the Eulerian idempotent is played by the iterated pre-Lie product.
As an instance of a linear action of a Hopf algebra on a free associative algebra, we consider finite group gradings of a free algebra induced by gradings on the space spanned by the free generators. The homogeneous component corresponding to the identity of the group is a free subalgebra which is graded by the usual degree. We look into its Hilbert series and prove that it is a rational function by giving an explicit formula. As an application, we show that, under suitable conditions, this subalgebra is finitely generated if and only if the grading on the base vector space is trivial.
Extending the work of Freese and Cook, which develop the basic theory of calculus and power series over real associative algebras, we examine what can be said about the logarithmic functions over an algebra. In particular, we find that for any multiplicative unital nil algebra the exponential function is injective, and hence the algebra has a unique logarithm on the image of the exponential. We extend this result to show that for a large class of algebras, the logarithms behave incredibly similarly to the logarithms over the real and complex numbers depending on if they are "Type-R" or "Type-C…
In this note we introduce the concept of a shuffle product $\sq$ for planar tree polynomials and give a formula to compute the planar shuffle product $S \ \sq T$ of two finite planar reduced rooted trees $S, T.$ It is shown that $\sq$ is dual to the co-addition $Δ$ which leads to a formula for the coefficients of $Δ(f).$ It is also proved that $Δ(EXP) = EXP {\hat \otimes} EXP$ where $EXP$ is the generic planar tree exponential series, see [G]. Systems of quadratic relations for the coefficients of EXP are derived.
The theory of abstract kernels in non-trivial extensions for many kinds of algebraical objects, such as groups, rings and graded rings, associative algebras, Lie algebras, restricted Lie algebras, DG-algebras and DG-Lie algebras, has been widely studied since 1940's. Gerhard Hochschild firstly treats associative algebra as an generic type in the series of kernel problems. He proves the theorem of constructing kernel by presenting many tedious relations that may lost the readers today. In this paper, we shall illustrate the formulation and recast it for Lie algebra(-oid) kernels. We also prove …
We investigate some topics related to the celebrated Baker-Campbell-Hausdorff Theorem: a non-convergence result and prolongation issues. Given a Banach algebra $\mathcal{A}$ with identity $I$, and given $X,Y\in \mathcal{A}$, we study the relationship of different issues: the convergence of the BCH series $\sum_n Z_n(X,Y)$, the existence of a logarithm of $e^Xe^Y$, and the convergence of the Mercator-type series $\sum_n {(-1)^{n+1}}(e^Xe^Y-I)^n/n$ which provides a selected logarithm of $e^Xe^Y$. We fix general results and, by suitable matrix counterexamples, we show that various pathologies can…
It is shown that the subalgebra of invariants of a free associative algebra of finite rank under a linear action of a semisimple Hopf algebra has a rational Hilbert series with respect to the usual degree function, whenever the ground field has zero characteristic.
The paper concerns nilpotent associative dialgebras and their corresponding diassociative Schur multipliers. Using Lie (and group) theory as a guide, we first extend a classic five-term cohomological sequence under alternative conditions in the nilpotent setting. This main result is then applied to obtain a new proof for a previous extension of the same sequence. It also yields a different extension of the sequence that involves terms in the upper central series. Furthermore, we use the main result to obtain a collection of dimension bounds on the multiplier of a nilpotent diassociative algebr…
We study not necessarily associative (NNA) division algebras over the reals. We classify in this paper series those that admit a grading over a finite group $G$, and have a basis $\{v_g|g\in G\}$ as a real vector space, and the product of these basis elements respects the grading and includes a scalar structure constant with values only in $\{1,-1\}$. We classify here those graded by an abelian group $G$ of order $|G|\leq 8$ with $G$ non--isomorphic to $\z/8\z$. We will find the complex, quaternion, and octonion algebras, but also a remarkable set of novel non--associative division algebras.
The aim of this paper is to give an overview and to compare the different deformation theories of algebraic structures. We describe in each case the corresponding notions of degeneration and rigidity. We illustrate these notions with examples and give some general properties. The last part of this work shows how these notions help in the study of associative algebras varieties. The first and popular deformation approach was introduced by M. Gerstenhaber for rings and algebras using formal power series. A noncommutative version was given by Pinczon and generalized by F. Nadaud. A more general a…
Consider the free algebra A_n generated over Q by n generators x_1, ..., x_n. Interesting objects attached to A = A_n are members of its lower central series, L_i = L_i(A), defined inductively by L_1 = A, L_{i+1} = [A,L_{i}], and their associated graded components B_i = B_i(A) defined as B_i=L_i/L_{i+1}. These quotients B_i, for i at least 2, as well as the reduced quotient \bar{B}_1=A/(L_2+A L_3), exhibit a rich geometric structure, as shown by Feigin and Shoikhet and later authors, (Dobrovolska-Kim-Ma,Dobrovolska-Etingof,Arbesfeld-Jordan,Bapat-Jordan). We study the same problem over the inte…
We continue the study of the lower central series of a free associative algebra, initiated by B. Feigin and B. Shoikhet (arXiv:math/0610410). We generalize via Schur functors the constructions of the lower central series to any symmetric tensor category; specifically we compute the modified first quotient \bar{B}_1, and second and third quotients B_2, and B_3 of the series for a free algebra T(V) in any symmetric tensor category, generalizing the main results of (arXiv:math/0610410) and (arXiv:0902.4899). In the case A_{m|n}:=T(\CC^{m|n}), we use these results to compute the explicit Hilbert s…
It is shown that the skew field of Malcev-Neumann series of an ordered group frequently contains a free field of countable rank, i.e. the universal field of fractions of a free associative algebra of countable rank. This is an application of a criterion on embeddability of free fields on skew fields which are complete with respect to a valuation function, following K. Chiba. Other applications to skew Laurent series rings are discussed. Finally, embeddability questions on free fields of uncountable rank in Malcev-Neumann series rings are also considered.
Let GF(q)[x,y] be the polynomial algebra in two variables over the finite field GF(q) with q elements. We give an exact formula and the asymptotics for the number p(n) of automorphisms (f,g) of GF(q)[x,y] such that max{deg(f),deg(g)}=n. We describe also the Dirichlet series generating function p(1)/1^s+p(2)/2^s+p(3)/3^s+.... The same results hold for the automorphisms of the free associative algebra GF(q)<x,y>. We have also obtained analogues for free algebras with two generators in Nielsen - Schreier varieties of algebras.
There are several remarks on Hilbert series of finitely presented (f. p.) associative algebras over a field and their modules. First, given an integer $D$, the set of Hilbert series of right-sided ideals with generators and relations of degrees at most $D$ in a f. p. algebra is finite. Second, every f. p. module of linear growth over noetherian or coherent algebra has periodic Hilbert function. Third, every ideal in a Koszul family of ideals (defined in math.AG/0412441) in a f. p. algebra has rational Poincare series.
In a series of papers \cite{BRV1}, \cite{BRV2}, \cite{BRV3} we introduced full quivers and pseudo-quivers of representations of algebras, and used them as tools in describing PI-varieties of algebras. In this paper we apply them to obtain a complete proof of Belov's solution of Specht's problem for affine algebras over an arbitrary Noetherian ring. The inductive step relies on a theorem that enables one to find a "$\bar q$-characteristic coefficient-absorbing polynomial in each T-ideal $Γ$," i.e., a non-identity of the representable algebra $A$ arising from $Γ$, whose ideal of evaluations in $…
Let $L_i(R)$ denote the $i^{\text{th}}$ term of the lower central series of an associative algebra $R$, and let $B_i(R)=L_i(R)/L_{i+1}(R)$. We show that $B_2(\mathbb{C}<x, y>/ P)\cong Ω^2((\mathbb{C}<x, y>/ P)_{ab})$, for all homogeneous or quasihomogeneous $P$ with square-free abelianization. Our approach generalizes that of Balagovic and Balasubramanian in 2010, which in turn developed from that of Dobrovolska, Kim, and Ma in 2007. We also use ideas of Feign and Shoikhet in 2006, who initiated the study of the groups $B_i(R)$.
We study relatively free associative algebras $F^{(n)}_r$ of ranks $r=2,3$ with the identity $[x_1,\dots, x_n]=0$ of Lie nilpotency of step $n\geqslant 3$ over a field $K$ of characteristic $\neq 2,3$. First we prove a Theorem on the inclusion $ T^{(m)}T^{(n)}\subseteq T^{(m+n-1)}$ for an associative algebra $A$ of rank $3$, where $T^{(n)}=T^{(n)}(A)$ is a T-ideal of $A$ generated by the commutator $[x_1,\dots, x_n]$; the restriction on rank is essential. Further, we describe 3-variable identities of the algebra $F^{(n)}$. In particular, the obtained description implies that $Z(F^{(n)}_r)=(T^{…
By the classical theorem of Weitzenboeck the algebra of constants (i.e., the kernel) of a nonzero locally nilpotent linear derivation of the polynomial algebra K[X] in d variables over a field K of characteristic 0 is finitely generated. As a noncommutative generalization one considers the algebra of constants of a locally nilpotent linear derivation of a d-generated relatively free algebra F(V) in a variety V of unitary associative algebras over K. It is known that the algebra of constants of F(V) is finitely generated if and only if V satisfies a polynomial identity which does not hold for t…
Given a finite-dimensional Lie algebra, and a representation by derivations on the completed symmetric algebra of its dual, a number of interesting twisted constructions appear: certain twisted Weyl algebras, deformed Leibniz rules, quantized ``star'' product. We first illuminate a number of interrelations between these constructions and then proceed to study a special case in certain precise sense corresponding to the symmetric or Weyl ordering. This case has been known earlier to be related to computations with Hausdorff series, for example the expression for the star product is in such term…
For any power series $a(t)$ with exponentially bounded nonnegative integer coefficients we suggest a simple construction of a finitely generated monomial associative algebra $R$ with Hilbert series $H(R,t)$ very close to $a(t)$. If $a(t)$ is rational/algebraic/transcendental, then the same is $H(R,t)$. If the growth of the coefficients of $a(t)$ is polynomial, in the same way we construct a graded algebra $R$ preserving the polynomial growth of the coefficients of its Hilbert series $H(R,t)$. Applying a classical result of Fatou from 1906 we obtain that if a finitely generated graded algebra $…
Let $A$ be an associative unital algebra, $B_k$ its successive quotients of lower central series and $N_k$ the successive quotients of ideals generated by lower central series. The geometric and algebraic aspects of $B_k$ and $N_k$ have been of great interest since the pioneering work of \cite{feigin2007}. In this paper, we will concentrate on the case where $A$ is a noncommutative polynomial algebra over $\mathbb{Z}$ modulo a single homogeneous relation. Both the torsion part and the free part of $B_k$ and $N_k$ are explored. Many examples are demonstrated in detail, and several general theor…
Consider a diagram $\cdots \to F_3 \to F_2\to F_1$ of algebraic systems, where $F_n$ denotes the free object on $n$ generators and the connecting maps send the extra generator to some distinguished trivial element. We prove that (a) if the $F_i$ are free associative algebras over a fixed field then the limit in the category of graded algebras is again free on a set of homogeneous generators; (b) on the other hand, the limit in the category of associative (ungraded) algebras is a free formal power series algebra on a set of homogeneous elements, and (c) if the $F_i$ are free Lie algebras then t…
