For any power series $a(t)$ with exponentially bounded nonnegative integer coefficients we suggest a simple construction of a finitely generated monomial associative algebra $R$ with Hilbert series $H(R,t)$ very close to $a(t)$. If $a(t)$ is rational/algebraic/transcendental, then the same is $H(R,t)$. If the growth of the coefficients of $a(t)$ is polynomial, in the same way we construct a graded algebra $R$ preserving the polynomial growth of the coefficients of its Hilbert series $H(R,t)$. Applying a classical result of Fatou from 1906 we obtain that if a finitely generated graded algebra $R$ has a finite Gelfand-Kirillov dimension, then its Hilbert series is either rational or transcendental. In particular the same dichotomy holds for the Hilbert series of finitely generated algebras $R$ with polynomial identity.
This paper continues the work which attempts to understand the general properties of the graded algebras associated with Hecke symmetries without a restriction on the parameter q of the Hecke relation imposed in earlier results.
Let G be a finite group, (g_{1},...,g_{r}) an (unordered) r-tuple of G^{(r)} and x_{i,g_i}'s variables that correspond to the g_i's, i=1,...,r. Let F<x_{1,g_1},...,x_{r,g_r}> be the corresponding free G-graded algebra where F is a field of zero characteristic. Here the degree of a monomial is determined by the product of the indices in G. Let I be a G-graded T-ideal of F<x_{1,g_1},...,x_{r,g_r}> which is PI (e.g. any ideal of identities of a G-graded finite dimensional algebra is of this type). We prove that the Hilbert series of F<x_{1,g_1},...,x_{r,g_r}>/I is a rational function. More genera…
One standard approach to compute the Hilbert function of any graded module over a field is to come up with a free-resolution for the graded module and another is via a Hilbert power series which serves as a generating function. The proposed approaches enable generating the values of a Hilbert function when the graded module is a quotient ring over a field by using combinatorics and homological algebra. Two of these approaches named the lcm-Lattice method and the Syzygy method, are conceptually combinatorial and work for any polynomial quotient ring over a field. The third approach named Hilber…
In this paper we introduce the semi-graded rings, which extend graded rings and skew PBW extensions. For this new type of non-commutative rings we will discuss some basic problems of non-commutative algebraic geometry. In particular, we will prove some elementary properties of the generalized Hilbert series, Hilbert polynomial and Gelfand-Kirillov dimension. We will extended the notion of non-commutative projective scheme to the case of semi-graded rings and we generalize the Serre-Artin-Zhang-Verevkin theorem. Some examples are included at the end of the paper.
In this paper, we introduce the class of finitely semi-graded algebras which extends the connected graded algebras finitely generated in degree one. The Koszul behavior of finitely semi-graded algebras is investigated by the distributivity of some associated lattice of ideals. The Hilbert series, the Poincaré series and the Yoneda algebra are defined for this class of algebras. Finitely semi-graded algebras include many important examples of non $\mathbb{N}$-graded algebras finitely generated in degree one coming from mathematical physics, and for these concrete examples the Koszulity will be …
Given a finite, simple, vertex-weighted graph, we construct a graded associative (non-commutative) algebra, whose generators correspond to vertices and whose ideal of relations has generators that are graded commutators corresponding to edges. We show that the Hilbert series of this algebra is the inverse of the clique polynomial of the graph. Using this result it easy to recognize if the ideal is inert, from which strong results on the algebra follow. Non-commutative Grobner bases play an important role in our proof. There is an interesting application to toric topology. This algebra arises n…
In this paper we introduce a class of noncommutative (finitely generated) monomial algebras whose Hilbert series are algebraic functions. We use the concept of graded homology and the theory of unambiguous context-free grammars for this purpose. We also provide examples of finitely presented graded algebras whose corresponding leading monomial algebras belong to the proposed class and hence possess algebraic Hilbert series.
This article surveys results on graded algebras and their Hilbert series. We give simple constructions of finitely generated graded associative algebras $R$ with Hilbert series $H(R,t)$ very close to an arbitrary power series $a(t)$ with exponentially bounded nonnegative integer coefficients. Then we summarize some related facts on algebras with polynomial identity. Further we discuss the problem how to find series $a(t)$ which are rational/algebraic/transcendental over ${\mathbb Q}(t)$. Applying a classical result of Fatou we conclude that if a finitely generated graded algebra has a finite G…
We begin with proving a formula relating the Hilbert series of a graded algebra $A$ and the Poincaré series for $A$ in two variables. This gives the Fröberg formula in the case where the bigraded $Tor^A(k,k)$ is concentrated on the diagonal, which we take as definition of $A$ being "Koszul". We look at a resolution in the commutative case obtained from the Koszul complex in the "trivially Golod" case. The algebra structure of $Ext_A(k,k)$ is introduced in different ways. Its subalgebra generated by the one-dimensional elements is by definition the "Koszul" dual of $A$. We define the"generalize…
Suppose $A$ is a graded associative algebra over a field, $I$ is its ideal generated by a set $α$ of homogeneous elements, and B = A/I. In this note, some inequalities between Hilbert series of algebras $A,B$ and the number of elements of the set $α$ are announced. As in the Golod--Shafarevich inequality as in our case the equality in every estimate is exact iff the set $α$ is strongly free: so we obtain some new characterizations of such sets. As a consequence it is proved that over a field of zero characteristic for the class of finitely defined graded algebras there is no algorithm to answe…
We characterize the Hilbert functions and minimal resolutions of (critical) Cohen-Macaulay graded right modules of Gelfand-Kirillov dimension two over generic quadratic and cubic three dimensional Artin-Schelter regular algebras.
Let E be the infinite dimensional Grassmann algebra over a field F of characteristic 0. In this paper we compute the ordinary and the Z/2Z-graded cocharacters of the algebra of 2x2 upper triangular matrices with coefficients in E, using the tool of proper Hilbert series.
We initiate a study of the growth and matrix-valued Hilbert series of non-negatively graded twisted Calabi-Yau algebras that are homomorphic images of path algebras of weighted quivers, generalizing techniques previously used to investigate Artin-Schelter regular algebras and graded Calabi-Yau algebras. Several results are proved without imposing any assumptions on the degrees of generators or relations of the algebras. We give particular attention to twisted Calabi-Yau algebras of dimension d at most 3, giving precise descriptions of their matrix-valued Hilbert series and partial results desc…
It is a fundamental result in commutative algebra and invariant theory that a finitely generated graded module over a commutative finitely generated graded algebra has rational Hilbert series, and consequently the Hilbert series of the algebra of polynomial invariants of a group of linear transformations is rational, whenever this algebra is finitely generated. This basic principle is applied here to prove rationality of Hilbert series of algebras of invariants that are neither commutative nor finitely generated. Our main focus is on linear groups acting on certain factor algebras of the tenso…
Let H_c be the rational Cherednik algebra of type A_{n-1} with spherical subalgebra U_c = eH_ce. Then U_c is filtered by order of differential operators, with associated graded ring gr U_c = C[h+h*]^W, where W is the n-th symmetric group. We construct a filtered Z-algebra B such that, under mild conditions on c: (1) The category B-qgr of graded noetherian B-modules modulo torsion is equivalent to U_c-mod; (2) The associated graded Z-algebra gr(B) has gr(B)-qgr equivalent to Coh Hilb(n), the category of coherent sheaves on the Hilbert scheme of points in the plane. This can be regarded as sayin…
As an instance of a linear action of a Hopf algebra on a free associative algebra, we consider finite group gradings of a free algebra induced by gradings on the space spanned by the free generators. The homogeneous component corresponding to the identity of the group is a free subalgebra which is graded by the usual degree. We look into its Hilbert series and prove that it is a rational function by giving an explicit formula. As an application, we show that, under suitable conditions, this subalgebra is finitely generated if and only if the grading on the base vector space is trivial.
We construct, using geometric invariant theory, a quasi-projective Deligne-Mumford stack of stable graded algebras. We also construct a derived enhancement, which classifies twisted bundles of stable graded A-infinity-algebras. The tangent complex of the derived scheme is given by graded Hochschild cohomology, which we relate to ordinary Hochschild cohomology. We obtain a version of Hilbert stability for non-commutative projective schemes.
We give a homological interpretation of the coefficients of the Hilbert series for an algebra associated with a directed graph and its dual algebra. This allows us to obtain necessary conditions for Koszulity of such algebras in terms of homological properties of the graphs. We use our results to construct algebras with a prescribed Hilbert series.
In this paper, homological methods together with the theory of formal languages of theoretical computer science are proved to be effective tools to determine the growth and the Hilbert series of an associative algebra. Namely, we construct a class of finitely presented associative algebras related to a family of context-free languages. This allows us to connect the Hilbert series of these algebras with the generating functions of such languages. In particular, we obtain a class of finitely presented graded algebras with non-rational algebraic Hilbert series.
We continue the study of the lower central series and its associated graded components for a free associative algebra with n generators, as initiated by B. Feigin and B. Shoikhet. We establish a linear bound on the degree of tensor field modules appearing in the Jordan-Hoelder series of each graded component, which is conjecturally tight. We also bound the leading coefficient of the Hilbert polynomial of each graded component. As applications, we confirm conjectures of P. Etingof and B. Shoikhet concerning the structure of the third graded component.
