We consider a natural Riemannian metric on the infinite dimensional manifold of all embeddings from a manifold into a Riemannian manifold, and derive its geodesic equation in the case $\Emb(\Bbb R,\Bbb R)$ which turns out to be Burgers' equation. Then we derive the geodesic equation, the curvature, and the Jacobi equation of a right invariant Riemannian metric on an infinite dimensional Lie group, which we apply to $\Diff(\Bbb R)$, $\Diff(S^1)$, and the Virasoro-Bott group. Many of these results are well known, the emphasis is on conciseness and clarity.
In this paper, we will generalize the Bott-Virasoro group, applying the concept of the connection cochain, and derive the Euler equations corresponding to the generalized Bott-Virasoro group. We will show the relationships between the new Euler equations and the old ones. Moreover, we will study the geodesic equation corresponding to the Burgers equation and apply it to the exponential curve.
The geodesic equation for the right invariant $L^2$-metric (which is a weak Riemannian metric) on each Virasoro-Bott group is equivalent to the KdV-equation. We prove that the corresponding energy functional, when restricted to paths with fixed endpoints, has no local minima. In particular solutions of KdV don't define locally length-minimizing paths.
We derive a new variational principle, leading to a new momentum map and a new multisymplectic formulation for a family of Euler--Poincaré equations defined on the Virasoro-Bott group, by using the inverse map (also called `back-to-labels' map). This family contains as special cases the well-known Korteweg-de Vries, Camassa-Holm, and Hunter-Saxton soliton equations. In the conclusion section, we sketch opportunities for future work that would apply the new Clebsch momentum map with $2$-cocycles derived here to investigate a new type of interplay among nonlinearity, dispersion and noise.
The main result of the paper is a computation of the Ricci curvature of $\DS/S^1$. Unlike earlier results on the subject, we do not use the Kähler structure symmetries to compute the Ricci curvature, but rather rely on classical finite-dimensional results of Nomizu et al on Riemannian geometry of homogeneous spaces.
On a complete noncompact Kähler manifold we prove that the bottom of the spectrum for the Laplacian is bounded from above by $m^2$ if the Ricci curvature is bounded from below by $-2(m+1)$. Then we show that if this upper bound is achieved then the manifold has at most two ends. These results improve previous results on this subject proved by P. Li and J. Wang in \cite {L-W3} and \cite{L-W} under assumptions on the bisectional curvature.
In this paper, we compute the Bott connections and their curvature on three-dimensional Lorentzian Lie groups with three different distributions, and we classify affine Ricci solitons associated to the Bott connection on three-dimensional Lorentzian Lie groups with three different distributions.
We calculate the Riemann curvature tensor and sectional curvature for the Lie group of volume-preserving diffeomorphisms of the Klein bottle and projective plane. In particular, we investigate the sign of the sectional curvature, and find a possible disagreement with a theorem of Lukatskii. We suggest an amendment to this theorem.
The Virasoro-Bott group endowed with the right-invariant $L^2$-metric (which is a weak Riemannian metric) has the KdV-equation as geodesic equation. We prove that this metric space has vanishing geodesic distance.
Let $(M,J,g,ω)$ be a Kähler manifold. We prove a $W^{1,2}$ weak Bott-Chern decomposition and a $W^{1,2}$ weak Dolbeault decomposition, following the $L^2$ weak Kodaira decomposition on Riemannian manifolds. Moreover, if the Kähler metric is complete and the sectional curvature is bounded, the $W^{1,2}$ Bott-Chern decomposition is strictly related to the space of $W^{1,2}$ Bott-Chern harmonic forms, i.e., $W^{1,2}$ smooth differential forms which are in the kernel of an elliptic differential operator of order $4$, called Bott-Chern Laplacian. We also generalize to the non compact case the well …
For Riemannian submersions with fibers of basic mean curvature, we compare the spectrum of the total space with the spectrum of a Schrödinger operator on the base manifold. Exploiting this concept, we study submersions arising from actions of Lie groups. In this context, we extend the state of the art results on the bottom of the spectrum under Riemannian coverings. As an application, we compute the bottom of the spectrum and the Cheeger constant of connected, amenable Lie groups.
We derive the 2-component Camassa-Holm equation and corresponding N=1 super generalization as geodesic flows with respect to the $H^1$ metric on the extended Bott-Virasoro and superconformal groups, respectively.
We show that all the small covers which are infra-nilmanifolds are exactly real Bott manifolds. This implies that any small cover which admits a flat Riemannian metric must be a real Bott manifold. In addition, we will study small covers which admit Riemannian metrics with positive or nonnegative Ricci curvature or sectional curvature. We will see that these geometric conditions put very strong restrictions on the topology of the small covers and the combinatorial structure of the underlying simple polytopes. Similar geometric problems are also studied for the real moment-angle complex of an a…
We study the Yang-Mills flow on a holomorphic vector bundle E over a compact Kahler manifold X . Along a solution of the flow, we show the curvature $iΛF(A_t)$ approaches in $L^2$ an endomorphism with constant eigenvalues given by the slopes of the quotients from the Harder-Narasimhan filtration of E. This proves a sharp lower bound for the Hermitian-Yang-Mills functional and thus the Yang-Mills functional, generalizing to arbitrary dimension a formula of Atiyah and Bott first proven on Riemann surfaces. Furthermore, we show any reflexive extension to all of X of the limiting bundle $E_\infty$…
We study an analogue of the Calabi flow in the non-Kähler setting for compact Hermitian manifolds with vanishing first Bott-Chern class. We prove a priori estimates for the evolving metric along the flow given a uniform bound on the Chern scalar curvature. If the Chern scalar curvature remains uniformly bounded for all time, we show that the flow converges smoothly to the unique Chern-Ricci-flat metric in the $\partial\bar{\partial}$-class of the initial metric.
Consider a compact Kähler manifold $M^m$ with Ricci curvature lower bound $Ric_M\geq -2(m+1) .$ Assume that its universal cover $% \widetilde{M}$ has maximal bottom of spectrum $λ_1(\widetilde{M}%) =m^2.$ Then we prove that $\widetilde{M}$ is isometric to the complex hyperbolic space $\Bbb{CH}^m.$
For any compact Lie group $G$ and closed, smooth Riemannian manifold $(X,g)$ of dimension $d\geq 2$, we extend a result due to Uhlenbeck (1985) that gives existence of a flat connection on a principal $G$-bundle over $X$ supporting a connection with $L^p$-small curvature, when $p>d/2$, to the case of a connection with $L^{d/2}$-small curvature. We prove an optimal Lojasiewicz-Simon gradient inequality for abstract Morse-Bott functions on Banach manifolds, generalizing an earlier result due to the author and Maridakis in arXiv:1510.03817. We apply this result to prove the optimal Lojasiewicz-Si…
Given a compatible vector field on a compact connected almost-complex manifold, we show in this article that the multiplicities of eigenvalues among the zero point set of this vector field have intimate relations. We highlight a special case of our result and reinterpret it as a vanishing-type result in the framework of the celebrated Atiyah-Bott-Singer localization formula. This new point of view, via the Chern-Weil theory and a strengthened version of Bott's residue formula observed by Futaki and Morita, can lead to an obstruction to Killing real holomorphic vector fields on compact Hermitia…
It was conjectured by Bott-Grove-Halperin that a compact simply connected Riemannian manifold $M$ with nonnegative sectional curvature is rationally elliptic. We confirm this conjecture under the stronger assumption that $M$ has entire Grauert tube,i.e.,$M$ is a real analytic Riemannian manifold that has a unique adapted complex structure defined on the whole tangent bundle $TM$.
We construct F-structures on a Bott manifold and on some other manifolds obtained by Kummer-type constructions. We also prove that if M=E#X, where E is a fiber bundle with structure group G and a fiber admitting a G-invariant metric of non-negative sectional curvature and X admits an F-structure with one trivial covering, then one can construct on M a sequence of metrics with sectional curvature uniformly bounded from below and volume tending to zero (i.e. $Vol_K$ (M)=0). As a corollary we prove that all the elements in the Spin cobordism group can be represented by manifolds M with $Vol_K$ (M…
Two sharp comparison results are derived for three-dimensional complete noncompact manifolds with scalar curvature bounded from below. The first one concerns the Green's function. When the scalar curvature is nonnegative, it states that the rate of decay of an energy quantity over the level set is strictly less than that of the Euclidean space, unless the manifold itself is isometric to the Euclidean space. The result is in turn converted into a sharp area comparison for the level set of the Green's function when in addition the Ricci curvature of the manifold is assumed to be asymptotically n…
We consider the group of sense-preserving diffeomorphisms $\Diff S^1$ of the unit circle and its central extension, the Virasoro-Bott group, with their respective horizontal distributions chosen to be Ehresmann connections with respect to a projection to the smooth universal Teichmüller space and the universal Teichmüller curve associated to the space of normalized univalent functions. We find formulas for the normal geodesics with respect to the pullback of the invariant Kählerian metrics, namely, the Velling-Kirillov metric on the class of normalized univalent functions and the Weil-Petersso…
We study both function theoretic and spectral properties on complete noncompact smooth metric measure space $(M,g,e^{-f}dv)$ with nonnegative Bakry-Émery Ricci curvature. Among other things, we derive a gradient estimate for positive $f$-harmonic functions and obtain as a consequence the strong Liouville property under the optimal sublinear growth assumption on $f.$ We also establish a sharp upper bound of the bottom spectrum of the $f$-Laplacian in terms of the linear growth rate of $f.$ Moreover, we show that if equality holds and $M$ is not connected at infinity, then $M$ must be a cylinder…
In this paper we consider the Boothby-Wang construction over twist 1 stage 3 Bott orbifolds given in terms of the log pair $(S_{\bf n},Δ_{\bf m})$. We give explicit constant scalar curvature (CSC) Sasaki metrics either directly from CSC Kähler orbifold metrics or by using the weighted extremal approach of Apostolov and Calderbank. The Sasaki 7-manifolds (orbifolds) are finitely covered by compact simply connected manifolds (orbifolds) with the rational homology of the 2-fold connected sum of $S^2\times S^5$.
In this paper we prove that two-dimensional translating solitons in $\mathbb{R}^3$ with finite $L$-index are homeomorphic to a plane or a cylinder and that a two-dimensional self-expander with finite $L$-index and sub exponential weighted volume growth has finite topology. We also prove that translating solitons and self-expanders have finite topology, provided the bottom of the spectrum of the $L$-stability operator is bounded from below and their weighted volume have subexponential growth.
We generalize the concept of sub-Riemannian geometry to infinite-dimensional manifolds modeled on convenient vector spaces. On a sub-Riemannian manifold $M$, the metric is defined only on a sub-bundle $\calH$ of the tangent bundle $TM$, called the horizontal distribution. Similarly to the finite-dimensional case, we are able to split possible candidates for minimizing curves into two categories: semi-rigid curves that depend only on $\calH$, and normal geodesics that depend both on $\calH$ itself and on the metric on $\calH$. In this sense, semi-rigid curves in the infinite-dimensional case ge…
We develop heat kernel and Green's function estimates for manifolds with positive bottom spectrum. The results are then used to establish existence and sharp estimates of the solution to the Poisson equation on such manifolds with Ricci curvature bounded below. As an application, we show that the curvature of a steady gradient Ricci soliton must decay exponentially if it decays faster than linear and the potential function is bounded above.
We study the Kähler geometry of stage n Bott manifolds, which can be viewed as $n$-dimensional generalizations of Hirzebruch surfaces. We show, using a simple induction argument and the generalized Calabi construction from [ACGT04,ACGT11], that any stage n Bott manifold $M_n$ admits an extremal Kähler metric. We also give necessary conditions for $M_n$ to admit a constant scalar curvature Kähler metric. We obtain more precise results for stage 3 Bott manifolds, including in particular some interesting relations with c-projective geometry and some explicit examples of almost Kähler structures. …
We construct geometric generators of the effective $S^1$-equivariant Spin- (and oriented) bordism groups with two inverted. We apply this construction to the question of which $S^1$-manifolds admit invariant metrics of positive scalar curvature. It turns out that, up to taking connected sums with several copies of the same manifold, the only obstruction to the existence of such a metric is an $\hat{A}$-genus of orbit spaces. This $\hat{A}$-genus generalizes a previous definition of Lott for orbit spaces of semi-free $S^1$-actions. As a further application of our results, we give a new proof of…
