We study an analogue of the Calabi flow in the non-Kähler setting for compact Hermitian manifolds with vanishing first Bott-Chern class. We prove a priori estimates for the evolving metric along the flow given a uniform bound on the Chern scalar curvature. If the Chern scalar curvature remains uniformly bounded for all time, we show that the flow converges smoothly to the unique Chern-Ricci-flat metric in the $\partial\bar{\partial}$-class of the initial metric.
Assuming local uniform bounds on the metric for a solution of the Chern-Ricci flow, we establish local Calabi and curvature estimates using the maximum principle.
We prove that the first Chern form of the moduli space of polarized Calabi-Yau manifolds, with the Hodge metric or the Weil-Petersson metric, represent the first Chern class of the canonical extensions of the tangent bundle to the compactification of the moduli space with normal crossing divisors.
We introduce a new geometric flow of Hermitian metrics which evolves an initial metric along the second derivative of the Chern scalar curvature. The flow depends on the choice of a background metric, it always reduces to a scalar equation and preserves some special classes of Hermitian structures, as balanced and Gauduchon metrics. We show that the flow has always a unique short-time solution and we provide a stability result when the background metric is Kaehler-Einstein with nonpositive scalar curvature.
In this paper, we investigate the Chern number inequalities on $4$-dimensional Kähler manifolds admitting the deformed Hermitian-Yang-Mills metrics under the assumption $\hatθ\in (π,2π)$.
We introduce the notions of Chern-Dirac bundles and Chern-Dirac operators on Hermitian manifolds. They are analogues of classical Dirac bundles and Dirac operators, with Levi-Civita connection replaced by Chern connection. We then show that the tensor product of canonical and the anticanonical spinor bundles, called V-spinor bundle, is a bigraded Chern-Dirac bundle with spaces of harmonic spinors isomorphic to the full Dolbeault cohomology class. A similar construction establishes isomorphisms between other types of harmonic spinors and Bott-Chern, Aeppli and twisted cohomology.
We study 4-dimensional second-Chern-Einstein almost-Hermitian manifolds. In the compact case, we observe that under a certain hypothesis the Riemannian dual of the Lee form is a Killing vector field. We use that observation to describe 4-dimensional compact second-Chern-Einstein locally conformally symplectic manifolds and we give some examples of such manifolds. Finally, we study the second-Chern-Einstein problem on unimodular almost-abelian Lie algebras, classifying those that admit a left-invariant second-Chern-Einstein metric with a parallel non-zero Lee form.
It is known that Hirzebruch surfaces of non zero degree do not admit any constant scalar curvature Kähler metric \cite{ACGT,G,M17}. In this note, we describe how to construct Hermitian metrics of positive constant Chern scalar curvature on Hirzebruch surfaces using Page--Bérard-Bergery's ansatz \cite{P78,B82}. We also construct the interesting case of Hermitian metrics of zero Chern scalar curvature on some ruled surfaces. Furthermore, we discuss the problem of the existence in a conformal class of critical metrics of the total Chern scalar curvature, studied by Gauduchon in \cite{G80,G84}.
We study and construct non-abelian hermitian Yang-Mills (HYM) instantons on Calabi-Yau cones. By means of a particular isometry preserving ansatz, the HYM equations are reduced to a novel Higgs-Yang-Mills flow on the Einstein-Kahler base. For any 2d-dimensional Calabi-Yau cone, we find explicit solutions of the flow equations that correspond to non-trivial SU(d) HYM instantons. These can be regarded as deformations of the spin connection of the Calabi-Yau cone.
We prove a case of the conjecture of Douglas, Reinbacher and Yau about the existence of stable vector bundles with prescribed Chern classes on a Calabi-Yau threefold. For this purpose we prove the existence of certain stable vector bundle extensions over elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau threefolds.
In this paper we introduce the Chern minimal surface in Hermitian surfaces by using the Chern connection, and we show that it only has isolated complex and anticomplex points for a generic one (neither holomorphic nor antiholomorphic). For a generic Chern minimal $f$ from compact Riemann surface $Σ$ in a Hermitian surface $M$, we establish two identities which related to the sum of the orders of all complex points, anticomplex points denoted by $P$, $Q$ respectively, the cap product of the pull-back of the first Chern class $f^*c_1(M)$ and $[Σ]$, the Euler characteristic of tangent bundle $χ(T…
The Bott-Chern cohomology of 6-dimensional nilmanifolds endowed with invariant complex structure is studied with special attention to the cases when balanced or strongly Gauduchon Hermitian metrics exist. We consider complex invariants introduced by Angella and Tomassini and by Schweitzer, which are related to the $\partial \bar\partial$-lemma condition and defined in terms of the Bott-Chern cohomology, and show that the vanishing of some of these invariants is not a closed property under holomorphic deformations. In the balanced case, we determine the spaces that parametrize deformations in t…
We show that Calabi-Yau manifolds are emergent from the commutative limit of six-dimensional noncommutative Hermitian U(1) instantons. Therefore we argue that the noncommutative Hermitian U(1) instantons correspond to quantized Calabi-Yau manifolds.
We consider the evolution of a Hermitian metric on a compact complex manifold by its Chern-Ricci form. This is an evolution equation first studied by M. Gill, and coincides with the Kahler-Ricci flow if the initial metric is Kahler. We find the maximal existence time for the flow in terms of the initial data. We investigate the behavior of the flow on complex surfaces when the initial metric is Gauduchon, on complex manifolds with negative first Chern class, and on some Hopf manifolds. Finally, we discuss a new estimate for the complex Monge-Ampere equation on Hermitian manifolds.
The various scalar curvatures on an almost Hermitian manifold are studied, in particular with respect to conformal variations. We show several integrability theorems, which state that two of these can only agree in the Kähler case. Our main question is the existence of almost Kähler metrics with conformally constant Chern scalar curvature. This problem is completely solved for ruled manifolds and in a complementary case where methods from the Chern-Yamabe problem are adapted to the non-integrable case. Also a moment map interpretation of the problem is given, leading to a Futaki invariant and …
In this paper, we proved that the Weil-Petersson volume of Calabi-Yau moduli is a rational number. We also proved that the integrations of the invariants of the Ricci curvature of the Weil-Petersson metric with respect to the Weil-Petersson volume form are all rational numbers.
In this work, we study the deformation of Hermitian metrics with Chern connection. By adapting the conformal perturbation method of Aubin and Ehrlich to Hermitian setting, we prove that Hermitian metrics with quasi-positive (resp. quasi-negative) second Chern-Ricci curvature can be deformed to one with positive (resp. negative) curvature.
In this paper, we introduce the first Aeppli-Chern class for complex manifolds and show that the $(1,1)$- component of the curvature $2$-form of the Levi-Civita connection on the anti-canonical line bundle represents this class. We systematically investigate the relationship between a variety of Ricci curvatures on Hermitian manifolds and the background Riemannian manifolds. Moreover, we study non-Kähler Calabi-Yau manifolds by using the first Aeppli-Chern class and the Levi-Civita Ricci-flat metrics. In particular, we construct explicit Levi-Civita Ricci-flat metrics on Hopf manifolds $S^{2n-…
In this paper, we obtain the Bedford-Taylor interior $C^{2}$ estimate and local Calabi $C^{3}$ estimate for the solutions to complex Monge-Ampère equations on Hermitian manifolds.
We study some basic properties and examples of Hermitian metrics on complex manifolds whose traces of the curvature of the Chern connection are proportional to the metric itself.
We address the issue why Calabi-Yau manifolds exist with a mirror pair. We observe that the irreducible spinor representation of the Lorentz group Spin(6) requires us to consider the vector spaces of two-forms and four-forms on an equal footing. The doubling of the two-form vector space due to the Hodge duality doubles the variety of six-dimensional spin manifolds. We explore how the doubling is related to the mirror symmetry of Calabi-Yau manifolds. Via the gauge theory formulation of six-dimensional Riemannian manifolds, we show that the curvature tensor of a Calabi-Yau manifold satisfies th…
This paper is concerned with Chern-Ricci flow evolution of left-invariant hermitian structures on Lie groups. We study the behavior of a solution, as t is approaching the first time singularity, by rescaling in order to prevent collapsing and obtain convergence in the pointed (or Cheeger-Gromov) sense to a Chern-Ricci soliton. We give some results on the Chern-Ricci form and the Lie group structure of the pointed limit in terms of the starting hermitian metric and, as an application, we obtain a complete picture for the class of solvable Lie groups having a codimension one normal abelian subgr…
The study of quasi-Kähler Chern-flat almost Hermitian manifolds is strictly related to the study of anti-bi-invariant almost complex Lie algebras. In the present paper we show that quasi-Kähler Chern-flat almost Hermitian structures on compact manifolds are in correspondence to complex parallelisable Hermitian structures satisfying the second Gray identity. From an algebraic point of view this correspondence reads as a natural correspondence between anti-bi-invariant almost complex structures on Lie algebras to bi-invariant complex structures. Some natural algebraic problems are approached and…
In this work, we show that along a particular choice of Hermitian curvature flow, the non-positivity of Chern-Ricci curvature will be preserved if the initial metric has non-positive bisectional curvature. As an application, we show that the canonical line bundle of a compact Hermitian manifold with nonpositive bisectional curvature and quasi-negative Chern-Ricci curvature is ample.
We show that on a smooth Hermitian minimal model of general type the Chern-Ricci flow converges to a closed positive current on M. Moreover, the flow converges smoothly to a Kahler-Einstein metric on compact sets away from the null locus of K_M. This generalizes work of Tsuji and Tian-Zhang to Hermitian manifolds, providing further evidence that the Chern-Ricci flow is a natural generalization of the Kahler-Ricci flow.
We define a functional for Hermitian metrics using the curvature of the Chern connection. The Euler-Lagrange equation for this functional is an elliptic equation for Hermitian metrics. Solutions to this equation are related to Kähler-Einstein metrics, and are automatically Kähler-Einstein under certain conditions. Given this, a natural parabolic flow equation arises. We prove short time existence and regularity results for this flow, as well as stability for the flow near Kähler-Einstein metrics with negative or zero first Chern class.
We consider non-Kaehler compact complex manifolds which are homogeneous under the action of a compact Lie group of biholomorphisms and we investigate the existence of special (invariant) Hermitian metrics on these spaces. We focus on a particular class of such manifolds comprising the case of Calabi-Eckmann manifolds and we prove the existence of an invariant Hermitian metric which is Chern-Einstein, namely whose second Ricci tensor of the associated Chern connection is a positive multiple of the metric itself. The uniqueness is also discussed.
Hermitian, pluriclosed metrics with vanishing Bismut-Ricci form give a natural extension of Calabi-Yau metrics to the setting of complex, non-Kähler manifolds, and arise independently in mathematical physics. We reinterpret this condition in terms of the Hermitian-Einstein equation on an associated holomorphic Courant algebroid, and thus refer to solutions as Bismut Hermitian-Einstein. This implies Mumford-Takemoto slope stability obstructions, and using these we exhibit infinitely many topologically distinct complex manifolds in every dimension with vanishing first Chern class which do not ad…
In this paper, we provide new examples of Levi-Civita Ricci-flat Hermitian metrics on certain compact non-Kähler Calabi-Yau manifolds, including every compact Hermitian Weyl-Einstein manifold, every compact locally conformal hyperKähler manifold, certain suspensions of Brieskorn manifolds, and every generalized Hopf manifold provided by suspensions of exotic spheres. These examples generalize previous constructions on Hopf manifolds. Additionally, we also construct new examples of compact Hermitian manifolds with nonnegative first Chern class that admit constant strictly negative Riemannian sc…
We present some formulae related to the Chern-Ricci curvatures and scalar curvatures of special Hermitian metrics. We prove that a compact locally conformal Kähler manifold with constant nonpositive holomorphic sectional curvature is Kähler. We also give examples of complete non-Kähler metrics with pointwise negative constant but not globally constant holomorphic sectional curvature, and complete non-Kähler metric with zero holomorphic sectional curvature and nonvanishing curvature tensor.
We show in this article that if a holomorphic vector bundle has a nonnegative Hermitian metric in the sense of Bott and Chern, which always exists on globally generated holomorphic vector bundles, then some special linear combinations of Chern forms are strongly nonnegative. This particularly implies that all the Chern numbers of such a holomorphic vector bundle are nonnegative and can be bounded below and above respectively by two special Chern numbers. As applications, we obtain a family of new results on compact connected complex manifolds which are homogeneous or can be holomorphically imm…
This is a survey of our work on spacelike graphic submanifolds in pseudo-Riemannian products, namely on Heinz-Chern and Bernstein-Calabi results and on the mean curvature flow, with applications to the homotopy of maps between Riemannian manifolds.
We study the class of compact complex manifolds whose first Chern class vanishes in the Bott-Chern cohomology. This class includes all manifolds with torsion canonical bundle, but it is strictly larger. After making some elementary remarks, we show that a manifold in Fujiki's class C with vanishing first Bott-Chern class has torsion canonical bundle. We also give some examples of non-Kahler Calabi-Yau manifolds, and discuss the problem of defining and constructing canonical metrics on them.
We study two natural problems concerning the scalar and the Ricci curvatures of the Bismut connection. Firstly, we study an analog of the Yamabe problem for Hermitian manifolds related to the Bismut scalar curvature, proving that, fixed a conformal Hermitian structure on a compact complex manifold, there exists a metric with constant Bismut scalar curvature in that class when the expected constant scalar curvature is non-negative. A similar result is given in the general case of Gauduchon connections. We then study an Einstein-type condition for the Bismut Ricci curvature tensor on principal b…
Motivated from mathematical aspects of the superstring theory, we introduce a new equation on a balanced, hermitian manifold, with zero first Chern class. Solving the equation, one will obtain, in each Bott--Chern cohomology class, a balanced metric which is hermitian Ricci--flat. This can be viewed as a differential form level generalization of the classical Calabi--Yau equation. We establish the existence and uniqueness of the equation on complex tori, and prove certain uniqueness and openness on a general Kähler manifold.
