On a complete noncompact Kähler manifold we prove that the bottom of the spectrum for the Laplacian is bounded from above by $m^2$ if the Ricci curvature is bounded from below by $-2(m+1)$. Then we show that if this upper bound is achieved then the manifold has at most two ends. These results improve previous results on this subject proved by P. Li and J. Wang in \cite {L-W3} and \cite{L-W} under assumptions on the bisectional curvature.
The purpose of this paper is to point out that `supremum' in two inequalities of Brooks should be replaced with `infimum'. The results of this paper are already known by Professor Higuci. Hence, I want to delete this paper from this preprint server.
In this paper, we study self-expanders for mean curvature flows. First we show the discreteness of the spectrum of the drifted Laplacian on them. Next we give a universal lower bound of the bottom of the spectrum of the drifted Laplacian and prove that this lower bound is achieved if and only if the self-expander is the Euclidian subspace through the origin. Further, for self-expanders of codimension $1$, we prove an inequality between the bottom of the spectrum of the drifted Laplacian and the bottom of the spectrum of weighted stability operator and that the hyperplane through the origin is …
We obtain upper estimates for the bottom (that is, greatest lower bound) of the essential spectrum of weighted Laplacian operator of a weighted manifold under assumptions of the volume growth of their geodesic balls and spheres. Furthermore, we find examples where the equality occurs in the estimates obtained. As a consequence, we give estimates for the weighted mean curvature of complete noncompact hypersurfaces into weighted manifolds.
We consider noncompact complete manifolds with Spin(9) holonomy and proved an one end result and a splitting type theorem under different conditions on the bottom of the spectrum. We proved that any harmonic functions with finite Dirichlet integral must be Cayley-harmonic, which allowed us to conclude an one end result. In the second part, we established a splitting type theorem by utilizing the Busemann function..
We give upper bounds for the bottom of the essential spectrum of properly immersed minimal submanifolds of $\mathbb{R}^{n}$ in terms of their volume growth. Our result improves the extrinsic version of Brook's essential spectrum estimate given by Ilias-Nelli-Soret in \cite[Cor.3]{ins}.
We study both function theoretic and spectral properties of the weighted Laplacian $Δ_f$ on complete smooth metric measure space $(M,g,e^{-f}dv)$ with its Bakry-Émery curvature $Ric_f$ bounded from below by a constant. In particular, we establish a gradient estimate for positive $f-$harmonic functions and a sharp upper bound of the bottom spectrum of $Δ_f$ in terms of the lower bound of $Ric_{f}$ and the linear growth rate of $f.$ We also address the rigidity issue when the bottom spectrum achieves its optimal upper bound under a slightly stronger assumption that the gradient of $f$ is bounded…
In this article, we show that a Finsler--Laplacian introduced previously can detect changes in the Finsler metric that the marked length spectrum cannot. We also construct examples of non-reversible Finsler metrics in negative curvature such that $4λ_1 > h^2$, where $λ_1$ is the bottom of the $L^2$-spectrum and $h$ the topological entropy of the flow.
We study the property of spectral-tightness of Riemannian manifolds, which means that the bottom of the spectrum of the Laplacian separates the universal covering space from any other normal covering space of a Riemannian manifold. We prove that spectral-tightness of a closed Riemannian manifold is a topological property characterized by its fundamental group. As an application, we show that a non-positively curved, closed Riemannian manifold is spectrally-tight if and only if the dimension of its Euclidean local de Rham factor is zero. In their general form, our results extend the state of th…
We prove a sharp integral gradient estimate for harmonic functions on noncompact Kähler manifolds. As application, we obtain a sharp estimate for the bottom of spectrum of the p-Laplacian and prove a splitting theorem for manifolds achieving this estimate.
We study the existence and uniqueness of the heat kernel on infinite, locally finite, connected graphs. For general graphs, a uniqueness criterion, shown to be optimal, is given in terms of the maximal valence on spheres about a fixed vertex. A sufficient condition for non-uniqueness is also presented. Furthermore, we give a lower bound on the bottom of the spectrum of the discrete Laplacian and use this bound to give a condition ensuring that the essential spectrum of the Laplacian is empty.
In this thesis, we analyze the stochastic completeness of a heat kernel on graphs which is a function of three variables: a pair of vertices and a continuous time, for infinite, locally finite, connected graphs. For general graphs, a sufficient condition for stochastic completeness is given in terms of the maximum valence on spheres about a fixed vertex. That this result is optimal is shown by studying a particular family of trees. We also prove a lower bound on the bottom of the spectrum for the discrete Laplacian and use this lower bound to show that in certain cases the Laplacian has empty …
Let $(M,g)$ be a non-compact riemannian $n$-manifold with bounded geometry at order $k\geq\frac{n}{2}$. We show that if the spectrum of the Laplacian starts with $q+1$ discrete eigenvalues isolated from the essential spectrum, and if the metric is generic for the $\Cl C^{k+2}$-strong topology, then the eigenvalues are distinct and their associated eigenfunctions are Morse. This generalizes to non-compact manifolds some arguments developped by K. Uhlenbeck. We deduce from this result that if $M^n$ has bounded geometry at order $k\geq\frac{n}{2}$ and has an isolated first eigenvalue for its Lapl…
We give a lower bound for the bottom of the $L^2$ differential form spectrum on hyperbolic manifolds, generalizing thus a well-known result due to Sullivan and Corlette in the function case. Our method is based on the study of the resolvent associated with the Hodge-de Rham Laplacian and leads to applications for the (co)homology and topology of certain classes of hyperbolic manifolds.
Let $M$ be a complete, non-compact, connected Riemannian manifold with Ricci curvature bounded from below by a negative constant. A sufficient condition is obtained for open and connected sets $D$ in $M$ for which the corresponding Dirichlet heat semigroup is intrinsically ultracontractive. That condition is formulated in terms of capacitary width. It is shown that both the reciprocal of the bottom of the spectrum of the Dirichlet Laplacian acting in $L^2(D)$, and the supremum of the torsion function for $D$ are comparable with the square of the capacitary width for $D$ if the latter is suffic…
Consider a smooth closed surface $M$ of fixed genus $\geqslant 2$ with a hyperbolic metric $σ$ of total area $A$. In this article, we study the behavior of geometric and dynamical characteristics (e.g., diameter, Laplace spectrum, Gaussian curvature and entropies) of nonpositively curved smooth metrics with total area $A$ conformally equivalent to $σ$. For such metrics, we show that the diameter is bounded above and the Laplace spectrum is bounded below away from zero by constants which depend on $σ$. On the other hand, we prove that the metric entropy of the geodesic flow with respect to the …
In this paper we investigate the validity of first and second order $L^{p}$ estimates for the solutions of the Poisson equation depending on the geometry of the underlying manifold. We first present $L^{p}$ estimates of the gradient under the assumption that the Ricci tensor is lower bounded in a local integral sense and construct the first counterexample showing that they are false, in general, without curvature restrictions. Next, we obtain $L^p$ estimates for the second order Riesz transform (or, equivalently, the validity of $L^{p}$ Calderón--Zygmund inequalities) on the whole scale $1<p<+…
