We consider the problem of describing the local biholomorphic equivalence class of a real-analytic hypersurface $M$ at a distinguished point $p_0\in M$ by giving a normal form for such objects. In order for the normal form to carry useful information about the biholomorphic equivalence class, we shall require that the transformation to normal form is unique modulo some finite dimensional group. A classical result due to Chern--Moser gives such a normal form for Levi nondegenerate hypersurfaces.
The main results in this paper concern real-analytic hypersurfaces $M$ in $\Bbb C^3$ at certain Levi degenerate points $p_0\in M$, namely points at which $M$ is 2-nondegenerate. We give a partial normal form for all such $(M,p_0)$, i.e. a normal form for the data associated with 2-nondegeneracy. We also give a complete formal normal form for such $(M,p_0)$ under the additional condition that the Levi form has rank one at $p_0$. This result, combined with a recent theorem due to the author, M. S. Baouendi, and L. P. Rothschild stating that formal equivalences between real-analytic finitely nondegenerate hypersurfaces converge, gives a description of the biholomorphic equivalence class of a real-analytic hypersurface in $\Bbb C^3$ at a point of 2-nondegeneracy where the rank of the Levi form is one.
Let f : (M,p)\to (M',p') be a formal biholomorphic mapping between two germs of real analytic hypersurfaces in \C^n, p'=f(p). Assuming the source manifold to be minimal at p, we prove the convergence of the so-called reflection function associated to f. As a consequence, we derive the convergence of formal biholomorphisms between real analytic minimal holomorphically nondegenerate hypersurfaces. Related results on partial convergence of formal biholomorphisms are also obtained.
We consider an alternative approach to a fundamental CR invariant - the Catlin multitype. It is applied to a general smooth hypersurface in $\mathbbC^{n+1}$, not necessarily pseudoconvex. Using this approach, we prove biholomorphic equivalence of models, and give an explicit description of biholomorphisms between different models. A constructive finite algorithm for computing the multitype is described. The results can be viewed a necessary step in understanding local biholomorphic equivalence of Levi degenerate hypersurfaces of finite Catlin multitype.
We present a new proof of Pinchuk's theorem on the analytic continuation of a biholomorphic mapping from a strongly pseudoconvex analytic real hypersurface to a compact strongly pseudoconvex analytic real hypersurface in a complex euclidean space.
We study the analytic continuation problem for a germ of a biholomorphic mapping from a non-minimal real hypersurface $M\subset\CC{n}$ into a real hyperquadric $\mathcal Q\subset\CP{n}$ and prove that under certain non-degeneracy conditions any such germ extends locally biholomorphically along any path lying in the complement $U\setminus X$ of the complex hypersurface $X$ contained in $M$ for an appropriate neighborhood $U\supset X$. Using the monodromy representation for the multiple-valued mapping obtained by the analytic continuation we establish a connection between nonminimal real hypersu…
We introduce new biholomorphic invariants for real-analytic hypersurfaces in 2-dimensional complex space and show how they can be used to show that a hypersurface possesses few automorphisms. We give conditions, in terms of the new invariants, guaranteeing that the stability group is finite, and give (sharp) bounds on the cardinality of the stability group in this case. We also give a sufficient condition for the stability group to be trivial. The main technical tool developed in this paper is a complete (formal) normal form for a certain class of hypersurfaces. As a byproduct, a complete clas…
We study on the biholomorphic equivalence of a strongly pseudoconvex bounded domain with differentiable spherical boundary to an open ball, and we study on the biholomorphicity of a proper holomorphic self mapping of a strongly pseudoconvex domain with real analytic boundary.
We construct normal forms for Levi degenerate hypersurfaces of finite type in $\mathbb C^2$. As one consequence, an explicit solution to the problem of local biholomorphic equivalence is obtained. Another consequence determines the dimension of the stability group of the hypersurface.
Let $V$, $\tilde V$ be hypersurface germs in $\CC^m$, each having a quasi-homogeneous isolated singularity at the origin. We show that the biholomorphic equivalence problem for $V$, $\tilde V$ reduces to the linear equivalence problem for certain polynomials $P$, $\tilde P$ arising from the moduli algebras of $V$, $\tilde V$. The polynomials $P$, $\tilde P$ are completely determined by their quadratic and cubic terms, hence the biholomorphic equivalence problem for $V$, $\tilde V$ in fact reduces to the linear equivalence problem for pairs of quadratic and cubic forms.
Applying Elie Cartan's classical method, we show that the biholomorphic equivalence problem to a totally nondegenerate Beloshapka's model of CR dimension one and codimension $k> 1$, whence of real dimension $2+k$, is reducible to some absolute parallelism, namely to an {e}-structure on a certain prolonged manifold of real dimension either $3+k$ or $4+k$. The proof relies on the weight analysis of the structure equations associated with the mentioned problem of equivalence. Thanks to the achieved results, we prove Beloshapka's maximum conjecture about the rigidity of his CR models of certain le…
Let $M$ be a real analytic hypersurface in $\bC^N$ which is finitely nondegenerate, a notion that can be viewed as a generalization of Levi nondegenerate, at $p_0\in M$. We show that if $M'$ is another such hypersurface and $p'_0\in M'$, then the set of germs at $p_0$ of biholomorphisms $H$ with $H(M)\subset M'$ and $H(p_0)=p'_0$, equipped with its natural topology, can be naturally embedded as a real analytic submanifold in the complex jet group of $\bC^N$ of the appropriate order. We also show that this submanifold is defined by equations that can be explicitly computed from defining equatio…
Let M be a real analytic strictly pseudoconvex manifold of higher codimension in complex space, and let M' be the cartesian product of two or more compact real analytic strictly convex hypersurfaces. We prove that a germ of a biholomorphic map taking an open set in M to M' extends as a biholomorphic map along any path in M.
In this paper, we study formal mappings between smooth generic submanifolds in multidimensional complex space and establish results on finite determination, convergence and local biholomorphic and algebraic equivalence. Our finite determination result gives sufficient conditions to guarantee that a formal map as above is uniquely determined by its jet at a point of a preassigned order. For real-analytic generic submanifolds, we prove convergence of formal mappings under appropriate assumptions and also give natural geometric conditions to assure that if two germs of such submanifolds are forma…
The Chern-Moser normal form and its analog on finite type hypersurfaces in general do not respect symmetries. Extending the work of N. K. Stanton, we consider the local equivalence problem for symmetric Levi degenerate hypersurfaces of finite type in $\mathbb C^2$. The results give for all such hypersurfaces a complete normalization which respects the symmetries. In particular, they apply to tubes and rigid hypersurfaces, providing an effective classification. The main tool is a complete normal form constructed for a general hypersurface with a tube model. As an application, we describe all bi…
Let $S$ be a real-analytic hypersurface in $C^n$ or, more generally, a CR-submanifold in a complex manifold $Z$ of arbitrary CR-codimension. This paper addresses the question, when a local biholomorphic map between open sets in $Z$ sending an open piece of $S$ into $S$ extends to a global biholomorphic self-map of $Z$ preserving $S$. We give answers for a large class of Levi-degenerate group orbits in compact Hermitian symmetric spaces.
We use classical invariant theory to solve the biholomorphic equivalence problem for two families of plane curve singularities previously considered in the literature. Our calculations motivate an intriguing conjecture that proposes a way of extracting a complete set of invariants of homogeneous plane curve singularities from their moduli algebras.
A connected real analytic hypersurface M in C^(n+1) whose Levi form is nondegenerate in at least one point - hence at every point of some Zariski-open subset - is locally biholomorphic to the model Heisenberg quadric pseudosphere of signature (k, n-k) in one point if and only if, at every other Levi nondegenerate point, it is also locally biholomorphic to some Heisenberg pseudosphere, possibly having different signature (l, n-l).
We survey our recently proposed method for constructing biholomorphic invariants of quasihomogeneous isolated hypersurface singularities and, more generally, invariants of graded Artinian Gorenstein algebras. The method utilizes certain polynomials associated to such algebras, called nil-polynomials, and we compare them with two other classes of polynomials that have also been used to produce invariants.
We study the local equivalence problem for five dimensional real hypersurfaces $M^5$ of $\mathbb{C}^3$ which are $2$-nondegenerate and of constant Levi rank $1$ under biholomorphisms. We find two invariants, $J$ and $W$, which are expressed explicitly in terms of the graphing function $F$ of $M$, the annulation of which give a necessary and sufficient condition for $M$ to be locally biholomorphic to a model hypersurface, the tube over the light cone. If one of the two invariants $J$ or $W$ does not vanish on $M$, we show that the equivalence problem under biholomophisms reduces to an equivalen…
A formal invertible equivalence between two minimal real analytic hypersurfaces converges if and only if the hypersurfaces are holomorphically nondegenerate
We introduce new invariant tensors in CR structures which can be viewed as higher order Levi forms. Using the second and third order tensors, we give a complete formal normal form (in the sense of Chern-Moser) for a real hypersurface at a generic Levi degeneracy. (We say that M has a generic Levi degeneracy at p if the Levi determinant vanishes at p but its differential does not, and the set of Levi degenerate points of M is transverse to the Levi null space at p.) By applying a convergence theorem for formal mappings due to the author, Baouendi, and Rothschild, we conclude that the above ment…
In this paper we consider germs of smooth Levi flat hypersurfaces, under the following notion of local equivalence: S_1 ~ S_2 if their one-sided neighborhoods admit a biholomorphism smooth up to the boundary. We introduce a simple invariant for this relation, which allows to prove some characterizations of triviality (i.e. equivalence to the hyperplane). Then, we employ the same invariant to construct infinitely many non-trivial classes, including an infinite family of not equivalent hypersurfaces which are almost everywhere analytic.
We develop a classification theory for real-analytic hypersurfaces in $\mathbb C^2$ in the case when the hypersurface is of {\em infinite type} at the reference point. This is the remaining, not yet understood case in $\mathbb C^2$ in the {\it Problème local}, formulated by H.\,Poincaré in 1907 and asking for a complete biholomorphic classification of real hypersurfaces in complex space. One novel aspect of our results, appearing in this revised version, is a notion of {\em smooth normal forms} for real-analytic hypersurfaces. We rely fundamentally on the recently developed CR -- DS technique …
Let (M,p) and (M',p') be the germs of real-analytic 1-infinite type hypersurfaces in \C^2. We prove that any formal equivalence sending (M,p) into (M',p') is formally parametrized (and hence uniquely determined by) its jet at p of a predetermined order depending only on (M,p). As an application, we use this to examine the local formal transformation groups of such hypersurfaces.
We show a refined version of the existence and uniqueness theorem to Chern-Moser normal form. The class of nondegenerate real hypersurfaces in normal form has a natural group action. Umbilic point is defined via normal form. Nondegenerate analytic real hypersurfaces are locally biholomorphic to a real hyperquadric whenever every point is umbilic in this sense.
We show that for any real-analytic submanifold M in C^N there is a proper real-analytic subvariety V contained in M such that for any point p in M\V, any real-analytic submanifold M' in C^N, and any point p' in M', the germs of the submanifolds M and M' at p and p' respectively are formally equivalent if and only if they are biholomorphically equivalent. More general results for k-equivalences are also stated and proved.
We consider the class of Levi nondegenerate hypersurfaces $M$ in $\bC^{n+1}$ that admit a local (CR transversal) embedding, near a point $p\in M$, into a standard nondegenerate hyperquadric in $\Bbb C^{N+1}$ with codimension $k:=N-n$ small compared to the CR dimension $n$ of $M$. We show that, for hypersurfaces in this class, there is a normal form (which is closely related to the embedding) such that any local equivalence between two hypersurfaces in normal form must be an automorphism of the associated tangent hyperquadric. We also show that if the signature of $M$ and that of the standard h…
We consider Levi non-degenerate tube hypersurfaces in $\CC^{n+1}$ that are $(k,n-k)$-spherical, i.e. locally CR-equivalent to the hyperquadric with Levi form of signature $(k,n-k)$, with $n\le 2k$. We show that the number of affine equivalence classes of such hypersurfaces is infinite (in fact, uncountable) in the following cases: (i) $k=n-2$, $n\ge 7$;\linebreak (ii) $k=n-3$, $n\ge 7$; (iii) $k\le n-4$. For all other values of $k$ and $n$, except for $k=3$, $n=6$, the number of affine classes is known to be finite. The exceptional case $k=3$, $n=6$ has been recently resolved by Fels and Kaup …
We study the equivalence problem for $4$-dimensional CR-manifolds of CR-dimension $1$ and codimension $2$ which are referred to as Engel CR-manifolds. We construct a canonical Cartan connection on such CR-manifolds through Cartan equivalence's method. In particular, we give the explicit expression of $4$ biholomorphic invariants, the annulation of which is a necessary and sufficient condition for an Engel manifold to be locally biholomorphic to Beloshapka's cubic in $\mathbb{C}^3$.
A local uniqueness property of holomorphic functions on real-analytic nowhere minimal CR submanifolds of higher codimension is investigated. A sufficient condition called almost minimality is given and studied. A weaker necessary condition, being contained a possibly singular real-analytic Levi-flat hypersurface is studied and characterized. This question is completely resolved for algebraic submanifolds of codimension 2 and a sufficient condition for noncontainment is given for non algebraic submanifolds. As a consequence, an example of a submanifold of codimension 2, not biholomorphically eq…
We consider (small) algebraic deformations of germs of real-algebraic CR submanifolds in complex space and study the biholomorphic equivalence problem for such deformations. We show that two algebraic deformations of minimal holomorphically nondegenerate real-algebraic CR submanifolds are holomorphically equivalent if and only if they are algebraically equivalent.
We study and generalize a classical theorem of L. Bers that classifies domains up to biholomorphic equivalence in terms of the algebras of holomorphic functions on those domains. Then we develop applications of these results to the study of domains with noncompact automorphism group.
We present a proof of the existence and uniqueness theorem of a normalizing biholomorphic mapping to Chern-Moser normal form. The explicit form of the equation of a chain on a real hyperquadric is obtained. We show a family of normal forms of nondegenerate real hypersurfaces including Chern-Moser normal form.
We study the local equivalence problem for real-analytic ($\mathcal{C}^ω$) hypersurfaces $M^5 \subset \mathbb{C}^3$ which, in coordinates $(z_1, z_2, w) \in \mathbb{C}^3$ with $w = u+i\, v$, are rigid: \[ u \,=\, F\big(z_1,z_2,\overline{z}_1,\overline{z}_2\big), \] with $F$ independent of $v$. Specifically, we study the group ${\sf Hol}_{\sf rigid}(M)$ of rigid local biholomorphic transformations of the form: \[ \big(z_1,z_2,w\big) \longmapsto \Big( f_1(z_1,z_2), f_2(z_1,z_2), a\,w + g(z_1,z_2) \Big), \] where $a \in \mathbb{R} \backslash \{0\}$ and $\frac{D(f_1,f_2)}{D(z_1,z_2)} \neq 0$, whic…
Applying the equivariant moving frames method, we construct convergent normal forms for real-analytic 5-dimensional totally nondegenerate CR submanifolds of C^4. These CR manifolds are divided into several biholomorphically inequivalent subclasses, each of which has its own complete normal form. Moreover it is shown that, biholomorphically, Beloshapka's cubic model is the unique member of this class with the maximum possible dimension seven of the corresponding algebra of infinitesimal CR automorphisms. Our results are also useful in the study of biholomorphic equivalence problem between CR ma…
Using the analytic theory of differential equations, we construct examples of formally but not holomorphically equivalent real-analytic Levi nonflat hypersurfaces in $\CC{n}$ together with examples of such hypersurfaces with divergent formal CR-automorphisms.
We study the equivalence problem under projective transformation for CR-hypersurfaces of complex projective space. A complete set of projective differential invariants for analytic hypersurfaces is given. The self-dual strongly C-linearly convex hypersurfaces are characterized.
We study the holomorphic equivalence problem for finite type hypersurfaces in $\mathbb C^2$. We discover a geometric condition, which is sufficient for the existence of a natural convergent normal form for a finite type hypersurface. We also provide an explicit construction of such a normal form. As an application, we construct a canonical connection for a large class of finite type hypersurfaces. To the best of our knowledge, this gives the first construction of an invariant connection for Levi-degenerate hypersurfaces in $\mathbb C^2$.
In the recent articles by Alper, Eastwood and Isaev, it was conjectured that all rational $GL_n({\mathbb C})$-invariant functions of forms of degree $d\ge 3$ on ${\mathbb C}^n$ can be extracted, in a canonical way, from those of forms of degree $n(d-2)$ by means of assigning every form with nonvanishing discriminant the so-called associated form. While this surprising statement is interesting from the point of view of classical invariant theory, its original motivation was the reconstruction problem for isolated hypersurface singularities, which is the problem of finding a constructive proof o…
We prove that if two real-analytic hypersurfaces in $\mathbb C^2$ are equivalent formally, then they are also $C^\infty$ CR-equivalent at the respective point. As a corollary, we prove that all formal equivalences between real-algebraic Levi-nonflat hypersurfaces in $\mathbb C^2$ are algebraic (in particular are convergent). The result is obtained by using the recent {\em CR - DS technique}, connecting degenerate CR-manifolds and Dynamical Systems, and employing subsequently the {\em multisummability theory} of divergent power series used in the Dynamical Systems theory.
We use the method of equivariant moving frames to revisit the problem of normal forms and equivalence of nondegenerate real hypersurfaces M \subset C^2 under the pseudo-group action of holomorphic transformations. The moving frame recurrence formulae allow us to systematically and algorithmically recover the results of Chern and Moser for hypersurfaces that are either non-umbilic at a point p \in M or umbilic in an open neighborhood of it. In the former case, the coefficients of the normal form expansion, when expressed as functions of the jet of the hypersurface at the point, provide a comple…
To any completely integrable second-order system of real or complex partial differential equations in n > 1 independent variables and in one dependent variable, Mohsen Hachtroudi associated in 1937 a normal projective (Cartan) connection, and he computed its curvature. By means of a natural transfer of jet polynomials to the associated submanifold of solutions, what the vanishing of the Hachtroudi curvature gives can be precisely translated in order to characterize when both families of Segre varieties and of conjugate Segre varieties associated to a Levi nondegenerate real analytic hypersurfa…
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the geometric properties of real hypersurfaces of D'Angelo infinite type in ${\mathbb C}^n$. In order to understand the situation of flatness of these hypersurfaces, it is natural to ask whether there exists a nonconstant holomorphic curve tangent to a given hypersurface to infinite order. A sufficient condition for this existence is given by using Newton polyhedra, which is an important concept in singularity theory. More precisely, equivalence conditions are given in the case of some model hypersurfaces.
We continue the development of the theory of infinitesimal Lipschitz equivalence, showing the genericity of the condition for families of hypersurfaces with isolated singularities.
The purpose of this paper is to investigate order of contact on real hypersurfaces in ${\mathbb C}^n$ by using Newton polyhedra which are important notion in the study of singularity theory. To be more precise, an equivalence condition for the equality of regular type and singular type is given by using the Newton polyhedron of a defining function for the respective hypersurface. Furthermore, a sufficient condition for this condition, which is more useful, is also given. This sufficient condition is satisfied by many earlier known cases (convex domains, pseudoconvex Reinhardt domains and pseud…
On a real analytic 5-dimensional CR-generic submanifold M^5 in C^4 of codimension 3, hence of CR dimension 1, which enjoys the generically satisfied nondegeneracy condition that Lie brackets up to length 3 of T^{1,0}M generate CTM, a canonical Cartan connection is constructed after reduction to a certain partially explicit e-structure of the concerned local biholomorphic equivalence problem. More advanced explorations of the incoming differential invariants due to the first and to the third authors already appeared in January 2014, hence the purpose is to show, while studying this specific Cla…
This article is devoted to studying multiplicity and regularity of real analytic sets. We present an equivalence for real analytic sets, named blow-spherical equivalence, which generalizes differential equivalence and subanalytic bi-Lipschitz equivalence and, with this approach, we obtain several applications on analytic sets. On regularity, we show that blow-spherical regularity of real analytic implies $C^1$ smoothness only in the case of real analytic curves. On multiplicity, we present a generalization for Gau-Lipman's Theorem about differential invariance of the multiplicity in the comple…
In this paper, we consider real hypersurfaces $M$ in $\Bbb C^3$ (or more generally, 5-dimensional CR manifolds of hypersurface type) at uniformly Levi degenerate points, i.e. Levi degenerate points such that the rank of the Levi form is constant in a neighborhood. We also require the hypersurface to satisfy a certain second order nondegeneracy condition (called 2-nondegeneracy) at the point. Our first result is the construction of a principal bundle $P\to M$ with an absolute parallelism, uniquely determined by the CR structure on $M$, which reduces the question of whether two such CR manifolds…
Let M be a CR manifold of hypersurface type, which is Levi degenerate but also satisfying a k-nondegeneracy condition at all points. This might be only if dim M is greater than or equal to 5 and if dim M = 5, then k= 2 at all points. We prove that for any 5-dimensional, uniformly 2-nondegenerate CR manifold M there exists a canonical Cartan connection, modelled on a suitable projective completion of the tube over the future light cone {z\in C^3: (x^1)^2+(x^2)^2-(x^3)^2 = 0, x^3>0}. This determines a complete solution to the equivalence problem for this class of CR manifolds.
