We consider the class of Levi nondegenerate hypersurfaces $M$ in $\bC^{n+1}$ that admit a local (CR transversal) embedding, near a point $p\in M$, into a standard nondegenerate hyperquadric in $\Bbb C^{N+1}$ with codimension $k:=N-n$ small compared to the CR dimension $n$ of $M$. We show that, for hypersurfaces in this class, there is a normal form (which is closely related to the embedding) such that any local equivalence between two hypersurfaces in normal form must be an automorphism of the associated tangent hyperquadric. We also show that if the signature of $M$ and that of the standard hyperquadric in $\bC^{N+1}$ are the same, then the embedding is rigid in the sense that any other embedding must be the original embedding composed with an automorphism of the quadric.
We introduced a new coordinate-free approach to study the Cauchy-Riemann (CR) maps between the real hyperquadrics in the complex projective space. The central theme is based on a notion of orthogonality on the projective space induced by the Hermitian structure defining the hyperquadrics. There are various kinds of special linear subspaces associated to this orthogonality which are well respected by the relevant CR maps and this is where the rigidities come from. Our method allows us to generalize a number of well-known rigidity theorems for the CR mappings between real hyperquadrics with much…
Being motivated by the orthogonal maps studied in \cite{GN1}, orthogonal pairs between the projective spaces equipped with possibly degenerate Hermitian forms were introduced. In addition, orthogonal pairs are generalizations of holomorphic Segre maps between Segre families of real hyperquadrics. We showed that non-degenerate holomorphic orthogonal pairs also have certain rigidity properties under a necessary codimension restriction. As an application, we got a rigidity theorem for Segre maps related to Heisenberg hypersurfaces obtained by Zhang in \cite{Zh}.
We study the rigidity of holomorphic mappings from a neighborhood of a Levi-nondegenerate CR hypersurface $M$ with signature $l$ into a hyperquadric $Q_{l'}^{N} \subseteq \mathbb{CP}^{N+1}$ of larger dimension and signature. We show that if the CR complexity of $M$ is not too large then the image of $M$ under any such mapping is contained in a complex plane with dimension independent of $N$. This result follows from two theorems, the first demonstrating that for sufficiently degenerate mappings, the image of $M$ is contained in a plane, and the second relating the degeneracy of mappings into d…
In this paper, we provide {\em effective} results on the non-embeddability of real-analytic hypersurfaces into a hyperquadric. We show that, for any $N >n \geq 1$, the defining functions $φ(z,\bar z,u)$ of all real-analytic hypersurfaces $M=\{v=φ(z,\bar z,u)\}\subset\mathbb C^{n+1}$ containing Levi-nondegenerate points and locally transversally holomorphically embeddable into some hyperquadric $\mathcal Q\subset\mathbb C^{N+1}$ satisfy an {\em universal} algebraic partial differential equation $D(φ)=0$, where the algebraic-differential operator $D=D(n,N)$ depends on $n, N$ only. To the best of…
The first part of the article surveys some work on the Chern-Moser-Weyl tensor and its application in the embeddability problem into hyperquadrics. In the last section, we give a negative answer to a folklore conjecture concerning the embeddability of compact, strongly pseudoconvex, real algebraic hypersurfaces into a sphere of sufficiently high dimension.
We show a refined version of the existence and uniqueness theorem to Chern-Moser normal form. The class of nondegenerate real hypersurfaces in normal form has a natural group action. Umbilic point is defined via normal form. Nondegenerate analytic real hypersurfaces are locally biholomorphic to a real hyperquadric whenever every point is umbilic in this sense.
Using Green's hyperplane restriction theorem, we prove that the rank of a Hermitian form on the space of holomorphic polynomials is bounded by a constant depending only on the maximum rank of the form restricted to affine manifolds. As an application we prove a rigidity theorem for CR mappings between hyperquadrics in the spirit of the results of Baouendi-Huang and Baouendi-Ebenfelt-Huang. Given a real-analytic CR mapping of a hyperquadric (not equivalent to a sphere) to another hyperquadric $Q(A,B)$, either the image of the mapping is contained in a complex affine subspace, or $A$ is bounded …
We give series of explicit examples of Levi-nondegenerate real-analytic hypersurfaces in complex spaces that are not transversally holomorphically embeddable into hyperquadrics of any dimension. For this, we construct invariants attached to a given hypersurface that serve as obstructions to embeddability. We further study the embeddability problem for real-analytic submanifolds of higher codimension and answer a question by Forstnerič.
Let $Q^N_l\subset \bC\bP^{N+1}$ denote the standard real, nondegenerate hyperquadric of signature $l$ and $M\subset \bC^{n+1}$ a real, Levi nondegenerate hypersurface of the same signature $l$. We shall assume that there is a holomorphic mapping $H_0\colon U\to \bC\bP^{N_0+1}$, where $U$ is some neighborhood of $M$ in $\bC^{n+1}$, such that $H_0(M)\subset Q^{N_0}_l$ but $H(U)\not\subset Q^{N_0}_l$. We show that if $N_0-n<l$ then, for any $N\geq N_0$, any holomorphic mapping $H\colon U\to \bC\bP^{N+1}$ with $H(M)\subset Q^{N}_l$ and $H(U)\not\subset Q^{N_0}_l$ must be the standard linear embedd…
Let $M_\ell$ be a smooth Levi-nondegenerate hypersurface of signature $\ell$ in $\mathbf C^n$ with $ n\ge 3$, and write $H_\ell^N$ for the standard hyperquadric of the same signature in $\mathbf C^N$ with $N-n< \frac{n-1}{2}$. Let $F$ be a holomorphic map sending $M_\ell$ into $H_\ell^N$. Assume $F$ does not send a neighborhood of $M_\ell$ in $\mathbf C^n$ into $H_\ell^N$. We show that $F$ is necessarily CR transversal to $M_\ell$ at any point. Equivalently, we show that $F$ is a local CR embedding from $M_\ell$ into $H_\ell^N$.
We study local rigidity properties of holomorphic embeddings of real hypersurfaces in $\mathbb C^2$ into real hypersurfaces in $\mathbb C^3$ and show that infinitesimal conditions imply actual local rigidity in a number of (important) cases. We use this to show that generic embeddings into a hyperquadric in $\mathbb C^3$ are locally rigid.
A generalization of the homological Poincare's operator was used to estimate the dimension of the Lie algebra of infinitesimal holomorphic automorphisms of an arbitrary germ of a real analytic hypersurface in ${\bf C}^4$. The following alternative is proved: either this dimension is infinite, or it does not exceed 24. Value 24 takes place only for one of two nondegenerate hyperquadrics. If the hypersurface is 2-nondegenerate at a generic point, then the dimension does not exceed 17, and if the hypersurface is 3-nondegenerate at a generic point, then the estimate is 20.
Non-existence theorems for Levi flat hypersurfaces have found great interest in the literature. The question next to this that has to be asked is, when existing Levi flat hypersurfaces are at least rigid under deformations. Here, the case of boundaries of disc bundles over certain compact Riemann surfaces is considered.
Let C(2,1) be the class of connected 5-dimensional CR-hypersurfaces that are 2-nondegenerate and uniformly Levi degenerate of rank 1. In a recent article, we proved that the CR-structures in C(2,1) are reducible to so(3,2)-valued absolute parallelisms. In the present paper, we apply this result to study tube hypersurfaces in C^3 that belong to C(2,1) and whose CR-curvature identically vanishes. Every such hypersurface is shown to be affinely equivalent to an open subset of the tube over the future light cone.
We consider Levi non-degenerate tube hypersurfaces in $\CC^{n+1}$ that are $(k,n-k)$-spherical, i.e. locally CR-equivalent to the hyperquadric with Levi form of signature $(k,n-k)$, with $n\le 2k$. We show that the number of affine equivalence classes of such hypersurfaces is infinite (in fact, uncountable) in the following cases: (i) $k=n-2$, $n\ge 7$;\linebreak (ii) $k=n-3$, $n\ge 7$; (iii) $k\le n-4$. For all other values of $k$ and $n$, except for $k=3$, $n=6$, the number of affine classes is known to be finite. The exceptional case $k=3$, $n=6$ has been recently resolved by Fels and Kaup …
We present a proof of the existence and uniqueness theorem of a normalizing biholomorphic mapping to Chern-Moser normal form. The explicit form of the equation of a chain on a real hyperquadric is obtained. We show a family of normal forms of nondegenerate real hypersurfaces including Chern-Moser normal form.
Let M(d,n) be the moduli stack of hypersurfaces of degree d > n in the complex projective n-space, and let M(d,n;1) be the sub-stack, parameterizing hypersurfaces obtained as a d fold cyclic covering of the projective n-1 space, ramified over a hypersurface of degree d. Iterating this construction, one obtains M(d,n;r). We show that M(d,n;1) is rigid in M(d,n), although the Griffiths-Yukawa coupling degenerates for d<2n. On the other hand, for all d>n the sub-stack M(d,n;2) deforms. We calculate the exact length of the Griffiths-Yukawa coupling over M(d,n;r), and we construct a 4-dimensional f…
We show, using standard results in length spectrum rigidity and symplectic homology, that if the unit tangent bundles of two compact surfaces of negative curvature are exact symplectomorphic, then the underlying surfaces are isometric, and hence the disk bundles are symplectomorphic smoothly up to the boundaries. Motivated by the work of Eliashberg and Hofer on unseen symplectic boundaries, we try to extend the above result to other classes of domains in (co)tangent bundles of surfaces. The domains we can treat consist of those bounded by deformations of negatively curved unit cotangent bundle…
