We provide an algebraic interpretation for two classes of continuous $q$-polynomials. Rogers' continuous $q$-Hermite polynomials and continuous $q$-ultraspherical polynomials are shown to realize, respectively, bases for representation spaces of the $q$-Heisenberg algebra and a $q$-deformation of the Euclidean algebra in these dimensions. A generating function for the continuous $q$-Hermite polynomials and a $q$-analog of the Fourier-Gegenbauer expansion are naturally obtained from these models.
We present a short proof that the normalized Turán determinant in the ultraspherical case is convex or concave depending on whether parameter $λ$ is positive or negative.
We characterize, up to a conjecture, probability distributions of all order finite moments having ultraspherical type generating functions for orthogonal polynomials.
In a companion paper [On semiclassical orthogonal polynomials via polynomial mappings, J. Math. Anal. Appl. (2017)] we proved that the semiclassical class of orthogonal polynomials is stable under polynomial transformations. In this work we use this fact to derive in an unified way old and new properties concerning the sieved ultraspherical polynomials of the first and second kind. In particular we derive ordinary differential equations for these polynomials. As an application, we use the differential equation for sieved ultraspherical polynomials of the first kind to deduce that the zeros of …
We show that a confluent case of the big q-Jacobi polynomials P_n(x;a,b,c;q), which corresponds to a=b=-c, leads to a discrete orthogonality relation for imaginary values of the parameter a (outside of its commonly known domain 0<a< q^{-1}). Since P_n(x;q^α, q^α, -q^α; q) tend to Gegenbauer (or ultraspherical) polynomials in the limit as q->1, this family represents yet another q-extension of these classical polynomials, different from the continuous q-ultraspherical polynomials of Rogers. The dual family with respect to the polynomials P_n(x;a,a,-a;q) (i.e., the dual discrete q-ultraspherical…
We show that the only polynomial sets with a generating function of the form F (xt -- R(t)) and satisfying a three-term recursion relation are the monomial set and the rescaled ultraspherical, Hermite, and Chebyshev polynomials of the first kind.
We examine a result of A. Iserles and E. B. Saff, use it to prove a conjecture of S. Fisk that a linear operator which maps monomials to Legendre polynomials also preserves zeros in the open interval $|x|<1$, and state a more general version of the conjecture for the Jacobi polynomials.
For a one-parameter family of lower triangular matrices with entries involving continuous $q$-ultraspherical polynomials we give an explicit lower triangular inverse matrix, with entries involving again continuous $q$-ultraspherical functions. The matrices are $q$-analogues of results given by Cagliero and Koornwinder recently. The proofs are not $q$-analogues of the Cagliero-Koornwinder case, but are of a different nature involving $q$-Racah polynomials. Some applications of these new formulas are given. Also the limit $β\to 0$ is studied and gives rise to continuous $q$-Hermite polynomials f…
In the first part, by the first author's work of 1972, an integral representation for an ultraspherical polynomial of higher index in terms of one of lower index and an infinite series was obtained. While this representation works well from a theoretical point of view, it is not numerically satisfactory as it involves polynomials of high degree, which are numerically unstable. Here we sum this series to obtain an integral, which is numerically tractable.
A new characterization of the generalized Hermite polynomials and of the orthogonal polynomials with respect to the maesure $|x|^\g (1-x^2)^{\a-1/2}dx$ is derived which is based on a "reversing property" of the coefficients in the corresponding recurrence formulas and does not use the representation in terms of generalized Laguerre and Jacobi polynomials. A similar characterization can be obtained for a generalization of the sieved ultraspherical polynomials of the first and second kind. These results are applied in order to determine the asymptotic limit distribution for the zeros when the de…
A recent conjecture by I. Raşa asserts that the sum of the squared Bernstein basis polynomials is a convex function in $[0,1]$. This conjecture turns out to be equivalent to a certain upper pointwise estimate of the ratio $P_n^{\prime}(x)/P_n(x)$ for $x\geq 1$, where $P_n$ is the $n$-th Legendre polynomial. Here, we prove both upper and lower pointwise estimates for the ratios $\big(P_n^{(λ)}(x)\big)^{\prime}/P_n^{(λ)}(x)$, $~x\geq 1$, where $P_n^{(λ)}$ is the $n$-th ultraspherical polynomial. In particular, we validate Raşa's conjecture.
We show that the only orthogonal polynomials with a generating function of the form $F(x z - αz^2)$ are the ultraspherical, Hermite, and Chebyshev polynomials of the first kind. For special $F$ for which this is the case, we then finish the classification of orthogonal polynomials with more general generating functions $F(x w(z) - R(z))$.
We prove pointwise bounds for two-parameter families of Jacobi polynomials. Our bounds imply estimates for a class of functions arising from the spectral analysis of distinguished Laplacians and sub-Laplacians on the unit sphere in arbitrary dimension, and are instrumental in the proof of sharp multiplier theorems for those operators.
We discuss and compare upper and lower bounds obtained by two different methods for the positive zero of the ultraspherical polynomial $C_{n}^{(λ)}$ that is greater than $1$ when $-3/2 < λ< -1/2.$ Our first approach uses mixed three term recurrence relations and interlacing of zeros while the second approach uses a method going back to Euler and Rayleigh and already applied to Bessel functions and Laguerre and $q$-Laguerre polynomials. We use the bounds obtained by the second method to simplify the proof of the interlacing of the zeros of $(1-x^2)C_{n}^{(λ)}$ and $C_{n+1}^{(λ)}$, for $-3/2 < λ…
We look for differential equations satisfied by the generalized Jacobi polynomials which are orthogonal on the interval [-1,1] with respect to the classical weight function for the Jacobi polynomials together with point masses at both endpoints. In the special symmetric case that both parameters are equal and also the two point masses are equal we find all differential equations of spectral type satisfied by these symmetric generalized ultraspherical polynomials. We show that if the point masses are positive only for nonnegative integer values of the parameter there exists exactly one differen…
The dual discrete $q$-ultraspherical polynomials $D_n^{(s)}(μ(x;s)|q)$ correspond to indeterminate moment problem and, therefore, have one-parameter family of extremal orthogonality relations. It is shown that special cases of dual discrete $q$-ultraspherical polynomials $D_n^{(s)}(μ(x;s)|q)$, when $s=q^{-1}$ and $s=q$, are directly connected with $q^{-1}$-Hermite polynomials. These connections are given in an explicit form. Using these relations, all extremal orthogonality relations for these special cases of polynomials $D_n^{(s)}(μ(x;s)|q)$ are found.
For $k \ge 2$ even, and $ α\ge -(2k+1)/4 $, we provide a uniform approximation of the ultraspherical polynomials $ P_k^{(α,\, α)}(x) $ in the oscillatory region with a very explicit error term. In fact, our result covers all $α$ for which the expression "oscillatory region" makes sense. We show that there the function $g(x)={c \sqrt{b(x)} \, (1-x^2)^{(α+1)/2} P_k^{(α, α)}(x)=\cos \mathcal{B}(x)+ r(x)}$, where $c=c(k, α)$ is defined by the normalization, $\mathcal{B}(x)=\int_{0}^ x b(x) dx$, and the functions $c,\, b(x), \, \mathcal{B}(x)$, as well as bounds on the error term $r(x)$ are given b…
We prove that a customary Sturm-Liouville form of second-order $q$-difference equation for the continuous $q$-ultraspherical polynomials $C_n(x;β| q)$ of Rogers can be written in a factorized form in terms of some explicitly defined $q$-difference operator ${\mathcal D}_x^{β, q}$. This reveals the fact that the continuous $q$-ultraspherical polynomials $C_n(x;β| q)$ are actually governed by the $q$-difference equation ${\mathcal D}_x^{β, q} C_n(x;β| q)= (q^{-n/2}+βq^{n/2}) C_n(x;β| q)$, which can be regarded as a square root of the equation, obtained from its original form.
We find all spectral type differential equations satisfied by the symmetric generalized ultraspherical polynomials which are orthogonal on the interval [-1,1] with respect to the classical symmetric weight function for the Jacobi polynomials together with equal mass points at both ends of the interval of orthogonality. In order to find explicit formulas for the coefficients of these differential equations we have to solve systems of equations involving derivatives of the classical Jacobi polynomials. These systems of equations have a unique solution which is given explicitly. This is a consequ…
This paper provides the details of Remark 5.4 in the author's paper "Askey-Wilson polynomials as zonal spherical functions on the SU(2) quantum group", SIAM J. Math. Anal. 24 (1993), 795-813. In formula (5.9) of the 1993 paper a two-parameter class of Askey-Wilson polynomials was expanded as a finite Fourier series with a product of two 3phi2's as Fourier coefficients. The proof given there used the quantum group interpretation. Here this identity will be generalized to a 3-parameter class of Askey-Wilson polynomials being expanded in terms of continuous q-ultraspherical polynomials with a pro…
We start by presenting a generalization of a discrete wave equation that is particularly satisfied by the entries of the matrix coefficients of the refinement equation corresponding to the multiresolution analysis of Alpert. The entries are in fact functions of two discrete variables and they can be expressed in terms of the Legendre polynomials. Next, we generalize these functions to the case of the ultraspherical polynomials and show that these new functions obey two generalized eigenvalue problems in each of the two discrete variables, which constitute a generalized bispectral problem. At t…
We observe that the linearization coefficients for ultraspherical polynomials are the orthogonality weights for Racah polynomials with special parameters. Then it turns out that the linearization sum with such a Racah polynomial as extra factor inserted, can also be evaluated. The corresponding Fourier--Racah expansion is an addition type formula which is dual to the well-known addition formula for ultraspherical polynomials. The limit to the case of Hermite polynomials of this dual addition formula is also considered. Similar results as for ultraspherical polynomials, although only formal, ar…
Let $\displaystyle \{x_{k,n-1}\} _{k=1}^{n-1}$ and $\displaystyle \{x_{k,n}\} _{k=1}^{n},$ $n \in \mathbb{N}$, be two sets of real, distinct points satisfying the interlacing property $ x_{i,n}<x_{i,n-1}< x_{i+1,n}, \, \, \, i = 1,2,\dots,n-1.$ Wendroff proved that if $p_{n-1}(x) = \displaystyle \prod _{k=1}^{n-1} (x-x_{k,n-1})$ and $p_n(x) = \displaystyle \prod _{k=1}^n (x-x_{k,n})$, then $p_{n-1}$ and $p_n$ can be embedded in a non-unique monic orthogonal sequence $\{p_{n}\} _{n=0}^\infty. $ We investigate a question raised by Mourad Ismail at OPSFA 2015 as to the nature and properties of or…
We derive a generalized Rogers generating function and corresponding definite integral, for the continuous $q$-ultraspherical polynomials by applying its connection relation and utilizing orthogonality. Using a recent generalization of the Rogers generating function by Ismail & Simeonov expanded in terms of Askey-Wilson polynomials, we derive corresponding generalized expansions for the continuous $q$-Jacobi, and Wilson polynomials with two and four free parameters respectively. Comparing the coefficients of the Askey-Wilson expansion to our continuous $q$-ultraspherical/Rogers expansion, we d…
We study Schur Q-polynomials evaluated on a geometric progression, or equivalently q-enumeration of marked shifted tableaux, seeking explicit formulas that remain regular at q=1. We obtain several such expressions as multiple basic hypergeometric series, and as determinants and pfaffians of continuous q-ultraspherical or continuous q-Jacobi polynomials. As special cases, we obtain simple closed formulas for staircase-type partitions.
In this paper, the structures to a family of biorthogonal polynomials that approximate to the Hermite and Generalized Laguerre polynomials are discussed respectively. Therefore, the asymptotic relation between several orthogonal polynomials and combinatorial polynomials are derived from the systems, which in turn verify the Askey scheme of hypergeometric orthogonal polynomials. As the applications of these properties, the asymptotic representations of the generalized Buchholz, Laguerre, Ultraspherical(Gegenbauer), Bernoulli, Euler, Meixner and Meixner-Pllaczekare polynomials are derived from t…
We give a Gegenbauer expansion of the two variable function $| s - t |^α$ in terms of the ultraspherical polynomials $C_l^λ (s)$ and $C^μ_m (t)$. Generalization, specialization, and limits of the expansion are also discussed.
We study mapping properties of operators with kernels defined via a combination of continuous and discrete orthogonal polynomials, which provide an abstract formulation of quantum (q-) Fourier type systems. We prove Ismail conjecture regarding the existence of a reproducing kernel structure behind these kernels, by establishing a link with Saitoh theory of linear transformations in Hilbert space. The results are illustrated with Fourier kernels with ultraspherical weights, their continuous q-extensions and generalizations. As a byproduct of this approach, a new class of sampling theorems is ob…
The continuous big $q$-Hermite polynomials are shown to realize a basis for a representation space of an extended $q$-oscillator algebra. An expansion formula is algebraically derived using this model.
We introduce bivariate versions of the continuous q-Hermite polynomials. We obtain algebraic properties for them (generating function, explicit expressions in terms of the univariate ones, backward difference equations and recurrence relations) and analytic properties (determining the orthogonality measure). We find a direct link between bivariate continuous q-Hermite polynomials and the star product method of [Kolb and Yakimov, Adv. Math. 2020] for quantum symmetric pairs to establish deformed quantum Serre relations for quasi-split quantum symmetric pairs of Kac-Moody type. We prove that the…
We argue that a customary q-difference equation for the continuous q-Hermite polynomials H_n(x|q) can be written in the factorized form as (D_q^2 - 1)H_n(x|q)=(q^{-n}-1)H_n(x|q), where D_q is some explicitly known q-difference operator. This means that the polynomials H_n(x|q) are in fact governed by the q-difference equation D_qH_n(x|q)=q^{-n/2}H_n(x|q), which is simpler than the conventional one.
Properties of certain $q$-orthogonal polynomials are connected to the $q$-oscillator algebra. The Wall and $q$-Laguerre polynomials are shown to arise as matrix elements of $q$-exponentials of the generators in a representation of this algebra. A realization is presented where the continuous $q$-Hermite polynomials form a basis of the representation space. Various identities are interpreted within this model. In particular, the connection formula between the continuous big $q$-Hermite polynomials and the continuous $q$-Hermite polynomials is thus obtained, and two generating functions for thes…
The study of $-1$ orthogonal polynomials viewed as $q =-1$ limits of the $q$-orthogonal polynomials is pursued. This paper present the continuous polynomials part of the $-1$ analog of the $q$-Askey scheme. A compendium of the properties of all the continuous $-1$ hypergeometric polynomials and their connections is provided.
We use connection relations and series rearrangement to generalize generating functions for several higher continuous orthogonal polynomials in the Askey scheme, namely the Wilson, continuous dual Hahn, continuous Hahn, and Meixner-Pollaczek polynomials. We also determine corresponding definite integrals using the orthogonality relations for these polynomials.
Jacobi polynomials are mapped onto the continuous Hahn polynomials by the Fourier transform and the orthogonality relations for the continuous Hahn polynomials then follow from the orthogonality relations for the Jacobi polynomials and the Parseval formula. In a special case this relation dates back to work by Bateman in 1933 and we follow a part of the historical development for these polynomials. Some applications of this relation are given.
Explicit solutions for the three-term recurrence satisfied by associated continuous dual $q$-Hahn polynomials are obtained. A minimal solution is identified and an explicit expression for the related continued fraction is derived. The absolutely continuous component of the spectral measure is obtained. Eleven limit cases are discussed in some detail. These include associated big $q$-Laguerre , associated Wall, associated Al-Salam-Chihara, associated Al-Salam-Carlitz I, and associated continuous $q$-Hermite polynomials.
We study special values for the continuous $q$-Jacobi polynomials and present applications of these special values which arise from bilinear generating functions, and in particular the Poisson kernel for these polynomials.
In this paper Fourier transform of multivariate orthogonal polynomials on the simplex is presented. A new family of multivariate orthogonal functions is obtained by using the Parseval's identity and several recurrence relations are derived.
We study a limiting case of the Askey-Wilson polynomials when one of the parameters goes to infinity, namely continuous dual q-Hahn polynomials when q > 1. Solutions to the associated indeterminate moment problem by general theory are found and an orthogonality relation is established.
We construct new examples of exceptional Hahn and Jacobi polynomials. Exceptional polynomials are orthogonal polynomials with respect to a measure which are also eigenfunctions of a second order difference or differential operator. The most apparent difference between classical or classical discrete orthogonal polynomials and their exceptional counterparts is that the exceptional families have gaps in their degrees, in the sense that not all degrees are present in the sequence of polynomials. The new examples have the novelty that they depend on an arbitrary number of continuous parameters.
We show that the gradient flows associated with a recently found family of Morse functions converge exponentially to the roots of the symmetric continuous Hahn polynomials. By symmetry reduction the rate of the exponential convergence can be improved, which is clarified by comparing with corresponding gradient flows for the roots of the Wilson polynomials.
In the paper we study the multipliers of Fourier series in polynomials orthogonal in continuous-discrete Sobolev's spaces. Multiplier Theorem for Fourier-Sobolev series is obtained. This result is based on the representation of the Fejér kernel, on the construction of the "humpbacked majorant" and weighted estimates of maximal functions.
We construct new examples of bispectral dual Hahn polynomials, i.e., orthogonal polynomials with respect to certain superposition of Christoffel and Geronimus transforms of the dual Hahn measure and which are also eigenfunctions of a higher order difference operator. The new examples have the novelty that they depend on an arbitrary number of continuous parameters. These are the first examples with this property constructed from the classical discrete families.
Asymptotic approximations for the continuous Hahn polynomials and their zeros as the degree grows to infinity are established via their three-term recurrence relation. The methods are based on the uniform asymptotic expansions for difference equations developed by Wang and Wong (\textit{Numer. Math.}, 2003) and the matching technique in the complex plane developed by Wang (\textit{J. Approx. Theory}, 2014).
We give necessary and sufficient existence criteria, and methods for finding, continuous solutions of linear equations whose coefficients are polynomials.
We present an elementary self-contained folkloristic proof, using limits of primitives of Bernstein polynomials, for the existence of primitive functions of continuous functions defined on the unit interval.
The purpose of this note is to characterize those orthogonal polynomials sequences $(P_n)_{n\geq0}$ for which $$ π(x)\mathcal{D}_q P_n(x)=(a_n x+b_n)P_n(x)+c_n P_{n-1}(x),\quad n=0,1,2,\dots, $$ where $\mathcal{D}_q$ is the Askey-Wilson operator, $π$ is a polynomial of degree at most 2, and $(a_n)_{n\geq0}$, $(b_n)_{n\geq0}$ and $(c_n)_{n\geq0}$ are sequences of complex numbers such that $c_n\neq0$ for $n=1,2,\dots$.
We raise a question on the existence of continuous roots of families of monic polynomials (by the root of a family of polynomials we mean a function of the coefficients of polynomials of a given family that maps each tuple of coefficients to a root of the polynomial with these coefficients). We prove that the family of monic second-degree polynomials with complex coefficients and the families of monic fourth-degree and fifth-degree polynomials with real coefficients have no continuous root. We also prove that the family of monic second-degree polynomials with real coefficients has continuous r…
