In this paper, we establish a $q$-integral formula by using the orthogonality relation, and also provide a new proof of the $q$-orthogonality relation for the continuous $q$-ultraspherical polynomials.
A new $q$-beta integral with five parameters is evaluated.
The purpose of this paper is to find the characterization of the Sheffer polynomial sets satisfying the d-orthogonality conditions. The generating function form of these polynomial sets is given in Theorem 2.2. As applications of the Theorem 2.2, we revisit the d-orthogonal polynomial sets exist in the literature and discover new d-orthogonal polynomial sets. Moreover, we obtain the d-dimensional functional vector ensuring the d-orthogonality of these new polynomial sets.
Rakhmanov's theorem for orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle gives a sufficient condition on the orthogonality measure for orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle, in order that the reflection coefficients (the recurrence coefficients in the Szego recurrence relation) converge to zero. In this paper we give the analog for orthogonal matrix polynomials on the unit circle.
It is stated and proved a characterization theorem for Laguerre-Hahn orthogonal polynomials on non-uniform lattices. This theorem proves the equivalence between the Riccati equation for the formal Stieltjes function, linear first-order difference relations for the orthogonal polynomials as well as for the associated polynomials of the first kind, and linear first-order difference relations for the functions of the second kind.
In the paper we study the multipliers of Fourier series in polynomials orthogonal in continuous-discrete Sobolev's spaces. Multiplier Theorem for Fourier-Sobolev series is obtained. This result is based on the representation of the Fejér kernel, on the construction of the "humpbacked majorant" and weighted estimates of maximal functions.
In this paper, we prove that the partial sum process of general orthogonal series is a geometric 2-rough process under the same condition as in Menshov-Rademacher Theorem. For Fourier series, the condition can be improved, and an equivalent condition on the limit function is identified.
Under the assumption that orthogonal polynomials of several variables admit an addition formula, we can define a convolution structure and use it to study the Fourier orthogonal expansions on a homogeneous space. We define a maximal function via the convolution structure induced by the addition formula and use it to establish a Marcinkiewicz multiplier theorem. For the homogeneous space defined by a family of weight functions on conic domains, we show that the maximal function is bounded by the Hardy-Littlewood maximal function so that the multiplier theorem holds on conic domains.
In this chapter are given necessary and sufficient conditions for the regularity of solutions of the functional equation appearing in the theory of classical orthogonal polynomials. In addition, we also present the functional Rodrigues formula and a closed formula for the recurrence coefficients. We finally used these results to solve some interesting research problems concerning characterization theorems.
We give a streamlined proof of a quantitative version of a result from [DG1] which is crucial for the proof of universality in the bulk [DG1] and also at the edge [DG2] for orthogonal and symplectic ensembles of random matrices. As a byproduct, this result gives asymptotic information on a certain ratio of the beta=1,2,4 partition functions for log gases.
The article proves an assertion analogous to the Littlewood-Paley theorem for the orthoprojectors onto mutually orthogonal subspaces of piecewise polynomial functions on the cube $ I^d. $ This assertion provides an upper estimate for the norms of the functions in $ L_p(I^d) $ via corresponding norms of projections onto subspaces of piecewise polynomial multivariable functions. These relationships are used to obtain upper estimates of the Kolmogorov widths of Besov classes of non-periodic functions meeting the mixed Hoelder conditions.
We generalize Bourgain's discretized projection theorem to higher rank situations. Like Bourgain's theorem, our result yields an estimate for the Hausdorff dimension of the exceptional sets in projection theorems formulated in terms of Hausdorff dimensions. This estimate complements earlier results of Mattila and Falconer.
It was recently conjectured that every system of exceptional orthogonal polynomials is related to classical orthogonal polynomials by a sequence of Darboux transformations. In this paper we prove this conjecture, which paves the road to a complete classification of all exceptional orthogonal polynomials. In some sense, this paper can be regarded as the extension of Bochner's result for classical orthogonal polynomials to the exceptional class. As a supplementary result, we derive a canonical form for exceptional operators based on a bilinear formalism, and prove that every exceptional operator…
In this research, by applying the extended Sturm-Liouville theorem for symmetric functions, a basic class of symmetric orthogonal polynomials (BCSOP) with four free parameters is introduced and all its standard properties, such as a generic second order differential equation along with its explicit polynomial solution, a generic orthogonality relation, a generic three term recurrence relation and so on, are presented. Then, it is shown that four main sequences of symmetric orthogonal polynomials can essentially be extracted from the introduced class. They are respectively the generalized ultra…
In this note we study the number of real roots of a wide class of random orthogonal polynomials with gaussian coefficients. Using the method of Wiener Chaos we show that the fluctuation in the bulk is asymptotically gaussian, even when the local correlations are not necessarily the same.
We extend some classical theorems in the theory of orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle to the matrix case. In particular, we prove a matrix analogue of Szegő's theorem. As a by-product, we also obtain an elementary proof of the distance formula by Helson and Lowdenslager.
We apply a theorem of Geronimus to derive some new formulas connecting Schur functions with orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle. The applications include the description of the associated measures and a short proof of Boyd's result about Schur functions. We also give a simple proof for the above mentioned theorem of Geronimus.
In this work, some theorems are established for orthogonal trigonometric polynomials (OTP) including Favard, Baxter, Geronimus, Rakhmanov, Szegö and the strong Szegö theorems which are important in the theory of orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle (OPUC). All these results are based on the mutual representation theorem of OPUC and OTP which deduced by a Riemann-Hilbert problem simultaneously characterizing them. In addition, Szegö recursions, four-term recurrences and some new identities for OPUC and OTP are also obtained by using their Riemann-Hilbert characterizations respectively.
It is proved in this paper that continuum set of $L_2$-orthogonal systems generated by the Riemann zeta-function on the critical line corresponds to every fixed $L_2$-orthogonal system on a fixed segment. This theorem serves as a resource for new set of integrals not accessible by the current methods in the theory of the Riemann zeta-function. \noindent Dedicated to the 100th anniversary of G.H. Hardy's fundamental theorem: the function $\zf$ has an infinite set of zeros, \cite{1}.
Motivated by G. H. Hardy's 1939 results \cite{Hardy} on functions orthogonal with respect to their real zeros $λ_{n}, n=1,2,... $, we will consider, within the same general conditions imposed by Hardy, functions satisfying an orthogonality with respect to their zeros with Jacobi weights on the interval $(0,1)$, that is, the functions $f(z)=z^νF(z), ν\in \mathbb{R}$, where $F$ is entire and \begin{equation*} \int_{0}^{1}f(λ_{n}t)f(λ_{m}t)t^α(1-t)^βdt=0,\quad α>-1-2ν, β>-1, \end{equation*}% when $n\neq m$. Considering all possible functions on this class we are lead to the discovery of a new fam…
Let $p_n(x)$, $n=0,1,\dots$, be the orthogonal polynomials with respect to a given density $dμ(x)$. Furthermore, let $dν(x)$ be a density which arises from $dμ(x)$ by multiplication by a rational function in $x$. We prove a formula that expresses the Hankel determinants of moments of $dν(x)$ in terms of a determinant involving the orthogonal polynomials $p_n(x)$ and associated functions $q_n(x)=\int p_n(u) \,dμ(u)/(x-u)$. Uvarov's formula for the orthogonal polynomials with respect to $dν(x)$ is a corollary of our theorem. Our result generalises a Hankel determinant formula for the case where …
We give a hypergeometric proof involving a family of 2-variable Krawtchouk polynomials that were obtained earlier by Hoare and Rahman [SIGMA 4 (2008), 089, 18 pages] as a limit of the 9-j symbols of quantum angular momentum theory, and shown to be eigenfunctions of the transition probability kernel corresponding to a "poker dice" type probability model. The proof in this paper derives and makes use of the necessary and sufficient conditions of orthogonality in establishing orthogonality as well as indicating their geometrical significance. We also derive a 5-term recurrence relation satisfied …
Standard proofs of Lusin's theorem, using simple functions, are sometimes quite elaborate. Here, we give a one-sentence proof of Lusin's theorem. We do not believe our approach, by way of inverse images, is new. However, this particular proof is strikingly clear and succinct.
We prove a certain duality relation for orthogonal polynomials defined on a finite set. The result is used in a direct proof of the equivalence of two different ways of computing the correlation functions of a discrete orthogonal polynomial ensemble.
We study the relation between certain non-degenerate lower Hessenberg infinite matrices $\mathcal{G}$ and the existence of sequences of orthogonal polynomials with respect to Sobolev inner products. In other words, we extend the well-known Favard theorem for Sobolev orthogonality. We characterize the structure of the matrix $\mathcal{G}$ and the associated matrix of formal moments $\mathcal{M}_{\mathcal{G}}$ in terms of certain matrix operators.
The orthogonality relations of multivariate Krawtchouk polynomials are discussed. In case of two variables, the necessary and sufficient conditions of orthogonality is given by Grünbaum and Rahman in [SIGMA 6 (2010), 090, 12 pages, arXiv:1007.4327]. In this study, a simple proof of the necessary and sufficient condition of orthogonality is given for a general case.
Exceptional orthogonal polynomials are complete families of orthogonal polynomials that arise as eigenfunctions of a Sturm-Liouville problem. Antonio Durán discovered a gap in the original proof of completeness for exceptional Hermite polynomials, that has propagated to analogous results for other exceptional families. In this paper we provide an alternative proof that follows essentially the same arguments, but provides a direct proof of the key lemma on which the completeness proof is based. This direct proof makes use of the theory of trivial monodromy potentials developed by Duistermaat an…
Classical orthogonal polynomial systems of Jacobi, Hermite, Laguerre and Bessel have the property that the polynomials of each system are eigenfunctions of a second order ordinary differential operator. According to a classical theorem by Bochner they are the only systems with this property. Similarly, the polynomials of Charlier, Meixner, Kravchuk and Hahn are both orthogonal and are eigenfunctions of a suitable difference operator of second order. We recall that according to the famous theorem of Favard-Shohat, the condition of orthogonality is equivalent to the 3-term recurrence relation. V…
The Bollobás-Varopoulos theorem is an analogue of Hall's matching theorem on non-atomic measure spaces. Here we prove a finite version with a completely constructive proof.
