We give a hypergeometric proof involving a family of 2-variable Krawtchouk polynomials that were obtained earlier by Hoare and Rahman [SIGMA 4 (2008), 089, 18 pages] as a limit of the 9-j symbols of quantum angular momentum theory, and shown to be eigenfunctions of the transition probability kernel corresponding to a "poker dice" type probability model. The proof in this paper derives and makes use of the necessary and sufficient conditions of orthogonality in establishing orthogonality as well as indicating their geometrical significance. We also derive a 5-term recurrence relation satisfied by these polynomials.
The orthogonality relations of multivariate Krawtchouk polynomials are discussed. In case of two variables, the necessary and sufficient conditions of orthogonality is given by Grünbaum and Rahman in [SIGMA 6 (2010), 090, 12 pages, arXiv:1007.4327]. In this study, a simple proof of the necessary and sufficient condition of orthogonality is given for a general case.
Given a sequence of polynomials $(p_n)_n$, an algebra of operators $\mathcal{A}$ acting in the linear space of polynomials and an operator $D_p\in \mathcal{A}$ with $D_p(p_n)=np_n$, we form a new sequence of polynomials $(q_n)_n$ by considering a linear combination of $m$ consecutive $p_n$: $q_n=p_n+\sum_{j=1}^mβ_{n,j}p_{n-j}$. Using the concept of $\mathcal{D}$-operator, we determine the structure of the sequences $β_{n,j}, j=1,\ldots,m,$ in order that the polynomials $(q_n)_n$ are common eigenfunctions of an operator in the algebra $\mathcal{A}$. As an application, from the classical discret…
The purpose of this note is to establish, from the hypergeometric-type difference equation introduced by Nikiforov and Uvarov, new tractable sufficient conditions for the monotonicity with respect to a real parameter of zeros of classical discrete orthogonal polynomials. This result allows one to carry out a systematic study of the monotonicity of zeros of classical orthogonal polynomials on linear, quadratic, q-linear, and q-quadratic grids. In particular, we analyze in a simple and unified way the monotonicity of the zeros of Hahn, Charlier, Krawtchouk, Meixner, Racah, dual Hahn, q-Meixner, …
We investigate polynomials, called m-polynomials, whose generator polynomial has coefficients that can be arranged as a matrix, where q is a positive integer greater than one. Orthogonality relations are established and coefficients are obtained for the expansion of a polynomial in terms of m-polynomials. We conclude this article by an implementation in MATHEMATICA of m-polynomials and the results obtained for them.
We investigate the zeros of a family of hypergeometric polynomials $_2F_1(-n,-x;a;t)$, $n\in\nn$ that are known as the Meixner polynomials for certain values of the parameters $a$ and $t$. When $a=-N$, $N\in\nn$ and $t=\frac1{p}$, the polynomials $K_n(x;p,N)=(-N)_n\phantom{}_2F_1(-n,-x;-N;\frac1{p})$, $n=0,1,...N$, $0<p<1$ are referred to as Krawtchouk polynomials. We prove results for the zero location of the orthogonal polynomials $K_{n}(x;p,a)$, $0<p<1$ and $a>n-1$, the quasi-orthogonal polynomials $K_{n}(x;p,a)$, $k-1<a<k$, $k=1,...,n-1$ and $p>1$ or $p<0$ as well as the non-orthogonal pol…
Krawtchouk polynomials appear in a variety of contexts, most notably as orthogonal polynomials and in coding theory via the Krawtchouk transform. We present an operator calculus formulation of the Krawtchouk transform that is suitable for computer implementation. A positivity result for the Krawtchouk transform is shown. Then our approach is compared with the use of the Krawtchouk transform in coding theory where it appears in MacWilliams' and Delsarte's theorems on weight enumerators. We conclude with a construction of Krawtchouk polynomials in an arbitrary finite number of variables, orthogo…
We study the recurrence coefficients of the orthogonal polynomials with respect to a semi-classical extension of the Krawtchouk weight. We derive a coupled discrete system for these coefficients and show that they satisfy the fifth Painlevé equation when viewed as functions of one of the parameters in the weight.
It is well known that the family of Hahn polynomials $\{h_n^{α,β}(x;N)\}_{n\ge 0}$ is orthogonal with respect to a certain weight function up to $N$. In this paper we present a factorization for Hahn polynomials for a degree higher than $N$ and we prove that these polynomials can be characterized by a $Δ$-Sobolev orthogonality. We also present an analogous result for dual-Hahn, Krawtchouk, and Racah polynomials and give the limit relations between them for all $n\in \XX N_0$. Furthermore, in order to get this results for the Krawtchouk polynomials we will get a more general property of orthogo…
Following the lead of J. Dehesa and his collaborators, we compute the Fisher information of the Meixner-Pollaczek, Meixner, Krawtchouk and Charlier polynomials.
We introduce some multivariate analogues of Meixner, Charlier and Krawtchouk polynomials, and establish their main properties, that is, duality, degenerate limits, generating functions, orthogonality relations, difference equations, recurrence formulas and determinant expressions. A particularly important and interesting result is that "the generating function of the generating function" for the Meixner polynomials coincides with the generating function of the Laguerre polynomials, which has previously not been known even for the one variable case. Actually, main properties for the multivariat…
The multivariate quantum $q$-Krawtchouk polynomials are shown to arise as matrix elements of "$q$-rotations" acting on the state vectors of many $q$-oscillators. The focus is put on the two-variable case. The algebraic interpretation is used to derive the main properties of the polynomials: orthogonality, duality, structure relations, difference equations and recurrence relations. The extension to an arbitrary number of variables is presented
In 1991 Tratnik derived two systems of multivariable orthogonal Racah polynomials and considered their limit cases. q-Extensions of these systems are derived, yielding systems of multivariable orthogonal q-Racah polynomials, from which systems of multivariable orthogonal q-Hahn, dual q-Hahn, q-Krawtchouk, q-Meixner, and q-Charlier polynomials follow as special or limit cases.
A singular polynomial is one which is annihilated by all Dunkl operators for a certain parameter value. These polynomials were first studied by Dunkl, de Jeu and Opdam, (Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 346 (1994), 237-256). This paper constructs a family of such polynomials associated to the irreducible representation (N-2,1,1) of the symmetric group S_N for odd N and parameter values -1/2, -3/2, -5/2,... . The method depends on the use of Krawtchouk polynomials to carry out a change of variables in a generating function involved in the construction of nonsymmetric Jack polynomials labeled by (m,n,0,.…
Many limits are known for hypergeometric orthogonal polynomials that occur in the Askey scheme. We show how asymptotic representations can be derived by using the generating functions of the polynomials. For example, we discuss the asymptotic representation of the Meixner-Pollaczek, Jacobi, Meixner, and Krawtchouk polynomials in terms of Laguerre polynomials.
New bispectral polynomials orthogonal on a quadratic bi-lattice are obtained from a truncation of Wilson polynomials. Recurrence relation and difference equation are provided. The recurrence coefficients can be encoded in a perturbed persymmetric Jacobi matrix. The orthogonality relation and an explicit expression in terms of hypergeometric functions are also given. Special cases and connections with the para-Krawtchouk polynomials and the dual-Hahn polynomials are also discussed.
New bispectral orthogonal polynomials are obtained from an unconventional truncation of the Askey-Wilson polynomials. In the limit $q \to 1$, they reduce to the para-Racah polynomials which are orthogonal with respect to a quadratic bi-lattice. The three term recurrence relation and q-difference equation are obtained through limits of those of the Askey-Wilson polynomials. An explicit expression in terms of hypergeometric series and the orthogonality relation are provided. A $q$-generalization of the para-Krawtchouk polynomials is obtained as a special case. Connections with the $q$-Racah and …
Connection coefficients between different orthonormal bases satisfy two discrete orthogonal relations themselves. For classical orthogonal polynomials whose weights are invariant under the action of the symmetric group, connection coefficients between a basis consisting of products of hypergeometric functions and another basis obtained from the first one by applying a permutation are studied. For the Jacobi polynomials on the simplex, it is shown that the connection coefficients can be expressed in terms of Tratnik's multivariable Racah polynomials and their weights. This gives, in particular,…
We introduce the power collection method for easily deriving connection relations for certain hypergeometric orthogonal polynomials in the $(q-)$Askey scheme. We summarize the full-extent to which the power collection method may be used. As an example, we use the power collection method to derive connection and connection-type relations for Meixner and Krawtchouk polynomials. These relations are then used to derive generalizations of generating functions for these orthogonal polynomials. The coefficients of these generalized generating functions are in general, given in term of multiple hyperg…
About two dozens of exactly solvable Markov chains on one-dimensional finite and semi-infinite integer lattices are constructed in terms of convolutions of orthogonality measures of the Krawtchouk, Hahn, Meixner, Charlier, $q$-Hahn, $q$-Meixner and little $q$-Jacobi polynomials. By construction, the stationary probability distributions, the complete sets of eigenvalues and eigenvectors are provided by the polynomials and the orthogonality measures. An interesting property possessed by these stationary probability distributions, called `convolutional self-similarity,' is demonstrated.
Burchnall's method to invert the Feldheim-Watson linearization formula for the Hermite polynomials is extended to all polynomial families in the Askey-scheme and its $q$-analogue. The resulting expansion formulas are made explicit for several families corresponding to measures with infinite support, including the Wilson and Askey-Wilson polynomials. An integrated version gives the possibility to give alternate expression for orthogonal polynomials with respect to a modified weight. This gives expansions for polynomials, such as Hermite, Laguerre, Meixner, Charlier, Meixner-Pollaczek and big $q…
Given a finite set $F=\{f_1,\cdots ,f_k\}$ of nonnegative integers (written in increasing size) and a classical discrete family $(p_n)_n$ of orthogonal polynomials (Charlier, Meixner, Krawtchouk or Hahn), we consider the Casorati determinant $\det(p_{f_i}(x+j-1))_{i,j=1,\cdots,k}$. In this paper we prove a nice invariant property for this kind of Casorati determinants when the set $F$ is changed by $I(F)=\{0,1,2,\cdots,\max F\}\setminus \{\max F-f:f\in F\}$. This symmetry is related to the existence of higher order difference equations for the orthogonal polynomials with respect to certain Chr…
In this paper we study the orthogonality conditions satisfied by the classical q-orthogonal polynomials that are located at the top of the q-Hahn tableau (big q-jacobi polynomials (bqJ)) and the Nikiforov-Uvarov tableau (Askey-Wilson polynomials (AW)) for almost any complex value of the parameters and for all non-negative integers degrees. We state the degenerate version of Favard's theorem, which is one of the keys of the paper, that allow us to extend the orthogonality properties valid up to some integer degree N to Sobolev type orthogonality properties. We also present, following an analogo…
We introduce the concept of $\D$-operators associated to a sequence of polynomials $(p_n)_n$ and an algebra $\A$ of operators acting in the linear space of polynomials. In this paper, we show that this concept is a powerful tool to generate families of orthogonal polynomials which are eigenfunctions of a higher order difference or differential operator. Indeed, given a classical discrete family $(p_n)_n$ of orthogonal polynomials (Charlier, Meixner, Krawtchouk or Hahn), we form a new sequence of polynomials $(q_n)_n$ by considering a linear combination of two consecutive $p_n$: $q_n=p_n+β_np_{…
The list of physically motivated urn models that can be solved in terms of classical orthogonal polynomials is very small. It includes a model proposed by D. Bernoulli and further analyzed by S. Laplace and a model proposed by P. and T. Ehrenfest and eventually connected with the Krawtchouk and Hahn polynomials. This connection was reversed recently in the case of the Jacobi polynomials where a rather contrived, and later a simpler urn model was proposed. Here we consider an urn model going with the Jacobi-Piñeiro multiple orthogonal polynomials. These polynomials have recently been put forth …

In this paper we present a method to obtain deformations of families of matrix-valued orthogonal polynomials that are associated to the representation theory of compact Gelfand pairs. These polynomials have the Sturm-Liouville property in the sense that they are simultaneous eigenfunctions of a symmetric second order differential operator and we deform this operator accordingly so that the deformed families also have the Sturm-Liouville property. Our strategy is to deform the system of spherical functions that is related to the matrix-valued orthogonal polynomials and then check that the polyn…
We present a new family $\left\{ S_{n}(x;q)\right\} _{n\geq 0}$ of monic polynomials in $x$, orthogonal with respect to a Sobolev-type inner product related to the $q$-Hermite I orthogonal polynomials, involving a first-order $q$-derivative on a mass-point $α\in \mathbb{R}$ located out of the corresponding orthogonality interval $[-1,1]$, for some fixed real number $q \in (0, 1)$. We present connection formulas, and the annihilation operator for this non-standard orthogonal polynomial family.
We compute the pointwise asymptotics of orthogonal polynomials with respect to a general class of pure point measures supported on finite sets as both the number of nodes of the measure and also the degree of the orthogonal polynomials become large. The class of orthogonal polynomials we consider includes as special cases the Krawtchouk and Hahn classical discrete orthogonal polynomials, but is far more general. In particular, we consider nodes that are not necessarily equally spaced. The asymptotic results are given with error bound for all points in the complex plane except for a finite unio…
The so-called exceptional orthogonal X1-polynomials arise as eigen functions of a Sturm-Liouville problem. In this paper, a generic classification of these polynomials is presented based on Pearson distributions family. Then, six special differential equations of the aforesaid classification are introduced and their polynomial solutions are studied in detail.
A family of orthonormal polynomials on the unit ball $B^d$ of $\RR^d$ with respect to the inner product $$ < f,g > = \int_{B^d}Δ[(1-\|x\|^2) f(x)] Δ[(1-\|x\|) g(x)] dx, $$ where $Δ$ is the Laplace operator, is constructed explicitly.
We study a family of "classical" orthogonal polynomials which satisfy (apart from a 3-term recurrence relation) an eigenvalue problem with a differential operator of Dunkl-type. These polynomials can be obtained from the little $q$-Jacobi polynomials in the limit $q=-1$. We also show that these polynomials provide a nontrivial realization of the Askey-Wilson algebra for $q=-1$.
We study two families of orthogonal polynomials. The first is a finite family related to the Askey-Wilson polynomials but the orthogonality is on the real line. A limiting case of this family is an infinite system of orthogonal polynomials whose moment problem is indeterminate. We provide several orthogonality measures for the infinite family and derive their Plancherel-Rotach asymptotics.
Orthogonal polynomials for a family of weight functions on $[-1,1]^2$, $$ \CW_{\a,\b,\g}(x,y) = |x+y|^{2\a+1} |x-y|^{2\b+1} (1-x^2)^\g(1-y^2)^{\g}, $$ are studied and shown to be related to the Koornwinder polynomials defined on the region bounded by two lines and a parabola. In the case of $\g = \pm 1/2$, an explicit basis of orthogonal polynomials is given in terms of Jacobi polynomials and a closed formula for the reproducing kernel is obtained. The latter is used to study the convergence of orthogonal expansions for these weight functions.
In this paper we study the following family of hypergeometric polynomials: $y_n(x) = \frac{ (-1)^ρ}{ n! } x^n {}_2 F_0(-n,ρ;-;-\frac{1}{x})$, depending on a parameter $ρ\in\mathbb{N}$. Differential equations of orders $ρ+1$ and $2$ for these polynomials are given. A recurrence relation for $y_n$ is derived as well. Polynomials $y_n$ are Sobolev orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle with an explicit matrix measure.
A generalisation of the Shannon complex wavelet is introduced, which is related to raised cosine filters. This approach is used to derive a new family of orthogonal complex wavelets based on the Nyquist criterion for Intersymbolic Interference (ISI) elimination. An orthogonal Multiresolution Analysis (MRA) is presented, showing that the roll-off parameter should be kept below 1/3. The pass-band behaviour of the Wavelet Fourier spectrum is examined. The left and right roll-off regions are asymmetric; nevertheless the Q-constant analysis philosophy is maintained. Finally, a generalisation of the…
In this paper we introduce a six-parameter generalization of the four-parameter three-variable polynomials on the simplex and we investigate the properties of these polynomials. Sparse recurrence relations are derived by using ladder relations for shifted univariate Jacobi polynomials and bivariate polynomials on the triangle. Via these sparse recurrence relations, second order partial differential equations are presented. Furthermore, some connection relations are obtained between these polynomials. Finally, new results for the four-parameter three-variable polynomials on the simplex are give…
We consider orthogonal polynomials on the surface of a double cone or a hyperboloid of revolution, either finite or infinite in axis direction, and on the solid domain bounded by such a surface and, when the surface is finite, by hyperplanes at the two ends. On each domain a family of orthogonal polynomials, related to the Gegebauer polynomials, is study and shown to share two characteristic properties of spherical harmonics: they are eigenfunctions of a second order linear differential operator with eigenvalues depending only on the polynomial degree, and they satisfy an addition formula that…
We present a new explicit family of polynomials orthogonal on the unit circle with a dense point spectrum. This family is expressed in terms of q-hypergeometric function of type ${_2}ϕ_1$. The orthogonality measure is the wrapped geometric distribution. Some "classical" properties of the above polynomials are presented.
The purpose of this work is to analyse a family of mutually orthogonal polynomials on the unit ball with respect to an inner product which includes an additional term on the sphere. First, we will get connection formulas relating classical multivariate orthogonal polynomials on the ball with our family of orthogonal polynomials. Then, using the representation of these polynomials in terms of spherical harmonics, algebraic and differential properties will be deduced.
We analyse a family of mutually orthogonal polynomials on the unit ball with respect to an inner product which involves the outward normal derivatives on the sphere. Using their representation in terms of spherical harmonics, algebraic and analytic properties will be deduced. First, we deduce explicit connection formulas relating classical multivariate ball polynomials and our family of Sobolev orthogonal polynomials. Then explicit representations for the norms and the kernels will be obtained. Finally, the asymptotic behaviour of the corresponding Christoffel functions is studied.
An explicit family of polynomials on the unit ball $B^d$ of $\RR^d$ is constructed, so that it is an orthonormal family with respect to the inner product $$ < f,g > = ρ\int_{B^d}\nabla f(x)\cdot \nabla g(x) dx + \CL (fg), $$ where $ρ>0$, $\nabla$ is the gradient, and $\CL(fg)$ is either the inner product on the sphere $S^{d-1}$ or $f(0)g(0)$.
Fourier transform of multivariate orthogonal polynomials on the unit ball are obtained. By using Parseval's identity, a new family of multivariate orthogonal functions are introduced. The results are expressed in terms of the continuous Hahn polynomials.
We give a remarkable additional orthogonality property of the classical Legendre polynomials on the real interval $[-1,1]$: polynomials up to degree $n$ from this family are mutually orthogonal under the arcsine measure weighted by the degree-$n$ normalized Christoffel function.
We introduce a new family of orthogonal polynomials on the disk that has emerged in the context of wave propagation in layered media. Unlike known examples, the polynomials are orthogonal with respect to a measure all of whose even moments are infinite.
In this paper Fourier transform of multivariate orthogonal polynomials on the simplex is presented. A new family of multivariate orthogonal functions is obtained by using the Parseval's identity and several recurrence relations are derived.
We study an infinite one-dimensional Ising spin chain where each particle interacts only with its nearest neighbors and is in contact with a heat bath with temperature decaying hyperbolically along the chain. The time evolution of the magnetization (spin expectation value) is governed by a semi-infinite Jacobi matrix. The matrix belongs to a three-parameter family of Jacobi matrices whose spectral problem turns out to be solvable in terms of the basic hypergeometric series. As a consequence, we deduce the essential properties of the corresponding orthogonal polynomials, which seem to be new. F…
