The purpose of this note is to establish, from the hypergeometric-type difference equation introduced by Nikiforov and Uvarov, new tractable sufficient conditions for the monotonicity with respect to a real parameter of zeros of classical discrete orthogonal polynomials. This result allows one to carry out a systematic study of the monotonicity of zeros of classical orthogonal polynomials on linear, quadratic, q-linear, and q-quadratic grids. In particular, we analyze in a simple and unified way the monotonicity of the zeros of Hahn, Charlier, Krawtchouk, Meixner, Racah, dual Hahn, q-Meixner, quantum q-Krawtchouk, q-Krawtchouk, affine q-Krawtchouk, q-Charlier, Al-Salam-Carlitz, q-Hahn, little q-Jacobi, little q-Laguerre/Wall, q-Bessel, q-Racah and dual q-Hahn polynomials.
In this contribution, discrete semiclassical orthogonal polynomials of class $s\leq2$ are studied. By considering all possible solutions of the Pearson equation, we obtain the canonical families in each class. We also consider limit relations between these and other families of orthogonal polynomials.
We study the discrete semiclassical orthogonal polynomials of class s=1. By considering all possible solutions of the Pearson equation, we obtain five canonical families. We also consider limit relations between these and other families of orthogonal polynomials.
By using a generalization of Sturm-Liouville problems in discrete spaces, a basic class of symmetric orthogonal polynomials of a discrete variable with four free parameters, which generalizes all classical discrete symmetric orthogonal polynomials, is introduced. The standard properties of these polynomials, such as a second order difference equation, an explicit form for the polynomials, a three term recurrence relation and an orthogonality relation are presented. It is shown that two hypergeometric orthogonal sequences with 20 different weight functions can be extracted from this class. More…
We present a method to obtain weight functions associated with linear and quadratic lattices that yield discrete orthogonality with respect to a quasi-definite moment functional of the orthogonal polynomial sequences in the Askey scheme, with the exception of the Jacobi, Bessel, Laguerre, and Hermite polynomials.
The goal of this work is to characterize all second order difference operators of several variables that have discrete orthogonal polynomials as eigenfunctions. Under some mild assumptions, we give a complete solution of the problem.
We introduce a new class of polynomials of multiple orthogonality with respect to the product of $r$ classical discrete weights on integer lattices with noninteger shifts. We give explicit representations in the form of the Rodrigues formulas. The case of two weights is described in detail.
In the paper we study the multipliers of Fourier series in polynomials orthogonal in continuous-discrete Sobolev's spaces. Multiplier Theorem for Fourier-Sobolev series is obtained. This result is based on the representation of the Fejér kernel, on the construction of the "humpbacked majorant" and weighted estimates of maximal functions.
The aim of this paper is to study differential properties of orthogonal polynomials with respect to a discrete Laguerre-Sobolev bilinear form with mass point at zero. In particular we construct the orthogonal polynomials using certain Casorati determinants. Using this construction, we prove that they are eigenfunctions of a differential operator (which will be explicitly constructed). Moreover, the order of this differential operator is explicitly computed in terms of the matrix which defines the discrete Laguerre-Sobolev bilinear form.
We consider orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle with respect to a weight which is a quotient of $q$-gamma functions. We show that the Verblunsky coefficients of these polynomials satisfy discrete Painlevé equations, in a Lax form, which correspond to an $A_3^{(1)}$ surface in Sakai's classification.
Let $V$ be a set of isolated points in $\RR^d$. Define a linear functional $\CL$ on the space of real polynomials restricted on $V$, $\CL f = \sum_{x \in V} f(x)ρ(x)$, where $ρ$ is a nonzero function on $V$. Polynomial subspaces that contain discrete orthogonal polynomials with respect to the bilinear form $<f,g> = \CL(f g)$ are identified. One result shows that the discrete orthogonal polynomials still satisfy a three-term relation and Favard's theorem holds in this general setting.
We obtain weight functions associated with $q$-linear and $q$-quadratic lattices that yield discrete orthogonality with respect to a quasi-definite moment functional for the Askey-Wilson polynomials and all the polynomial sequences in the q-Askey scheme, with the exception of the continuous $q$-Hermite polynomials.
We show how to get Krall polynomials from Krall discrete polynomials using a procedure of passing to the limit in some of the parameters of the family. We also show that this procedure has to be different to the standard one used in the Askey scheme to go from the classical discrete polynomials to the classical polynomials.
We investigate the asymptotic properties of orthogonal polynomials for a class of inner products including the discrete Sobolev inner products $\langle h,g \rangle = \int hg\, dμ+ \sum_{j=1}^m \sum_{i=0}^{N_j} M_{j,i} h^{(i)}(c_j) g^{(i)}(c_j)$, where $μ$ is a certain type of complex measure on the real line, and $c_j$ are complex numbers in the complement of $\supp(μ)$. The Sobolev orthogonal polynomials are compared with the orthogonal polynomials corresponding to the measure $μ$.
The aim of this paper is to study differential properties of orthogonal polynomials with respect to a discrete Jacobi-Sobolev bilinear form with mass point at $-1$ and/or $+1$. In particular, we construct the orthogonal polynomials using certain Casorati determinants. Using this construction, we prove that when the Jacobi parameters $α$ and $β$ are nonnegative integers the Jacobi-Sobolev orthogonal polynomials are eigenfunctions of a differential operator of finite order (which will be explicitly constructed). Moreover, the order of this differential operator is explicitly computed in terms of…
Boelen et al. (2010) deduced a $q$-discrete Painlevé equation satisfied by the recurrence coefficients of orthogonal polynomials and conjectured that the equation had a unique positive solution. We prove their conjecture and discuss related work in the area, highlighting a potentially unifying methodology.
We prove that all zeros of the polynomials orthogonal with respect to a measure $d μ(x;a) = d μ(x) + M δ(x-a)$, where $dμ$ is a nonatomic positive Borel measure and $M>0$, are increasing functions of the mass point $a$. Thus we solve partially an open problem posed by Mourad Ismail.
We investigate the recurrence coefficients of discrete orthogonal polynomials on the non-negative integers with hypergeometric weights and show that they satisfy a system of non-linear difference equations and a non-linear second order differential equation in one of the parameters of the weights. The non-linear difference equations form a pair of discrete Painlevé equations and the differential equation is the $σ$-form of the sixth Painlevé equation. We briefly investigate the asymptotic behavior of the recurrence coefficients as $n\to \infty$ using the discrete Painlevé equations.
We give four examples of families of orthogonal polynomials for which the coefficients in the recurrence relation satisfy a discrete Painlevé equation. The first example deals with Freud weights $|x|^ρ\exp(-|x|^m)$ on the real line, and we repeat Freud's derivation and analysis for the cases $m=2,4,6$. The Freud equations for the recurrence coefficients when $m=4$ corresponds to the discrete Painlevé I equation. The second example deals with orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle for the weight $\exp(λ\cos θ)$. These orthogonal polynomials are important in the theory of random unitary matri…
We consider a problem of bounding the maximal possible multiplicity of a zero at of some expansions $\sum a_i F_i(x)$, at a certain point $c,$ depending on the chosen family $\{F_i \}$. The most important example is a polynomial with $c=1.$ It is shown that this question naturally leads to discrete orthogonal polynomials. Using this connection we derive some new bounds, in particular on the multiplicity of the zero at one of a polynomial with a prescribed norm.
Difference calculus compatible with polynomials (i.e., such that the divided difference operator of first order applied to any polynomial must yield a polynomial of lower degree) can only be made on special lattices well known in contemporary $q-$calculus. Orthogonal polynomials satisfying difference relations on such lattices are presented. In particular, lattices which are dense on intervals ($|q|=1$) are considered.
It is well known that the family of Hahn polynomials $\{h_n^{α,β}(x;N)\}_{n\ge 0}$ is orthogonal with respect to a certain weight function up to $N$. In this paper we present a factorization for Hahn polynomials for a degree higher than $N$ and we prove that these polynomials can be characterized by a $Δ$-Sobolev orthogonality. We also present an analogous result for dual-Hahn, Krawtchouk, and Racah polynomials and give the limit relations between them for all $n\in \XX N_0$. Furthermore, in order to get this results for the Krawtchouk polynomials we will get a more general property of orthogo…
The second order partial difference equation of two variables $ \CD u:= A_{1,1}(x) Δ_1 \nabla_1 u + A_{1,2}(x) Δ_1 \nabla_2 u + A_{2,1}(x) Δ_2 \nabla_1 u + A_{2,2}(x) Δ_2 \nabla_2 u & \qquad \qquad \qquad \qquad + B_1(x) Δ_1 u + B_2(x) Δ_2 u = λu, $ is studied to determine when it has orthogonal polynomials as solutions. We derive conditions on $\CD$ so that a weight function $W$ exists for which $W \CD u$ is self-adjoint and the difference equation has polynomial solutions which are orthogonal with respect to $W$. The solutions are essentially the classical discrete orthogonal polynomials of …
New sequences of discrete orthogonal polynomials associated with the modified Bessel function $K_μ(z)$ or Macdonald function are considered. The corresponding weight function is $λ^k ρ_{k+ν+1}(t)/ k!$, where $\ k \in \mathbb{N}_0, \ t \ge 0,\ ν> -1,\ 0 < λ< 1,\ ρ_μ(z) = 2 z^{μ/2} K_μ\left( 2\sqrt z\right)$. The limit case $t=0$ corresponds to the Meixner polynomials. Various properties, differential-difference recurrence relations are established. The modified sequence of polynomials with the weight $λ^k ρ_{k+ν+1}(λt)/ k! $ is investigated as well.
In this paper, we develop the Riemann-Hilbert method to study the asymptotics of discrete orthogonal polynomials on infinite nodes with an accumulation point. To illustrate our method, we consider the Tricomi-Carlitz polynomials $f_n^{(α)}(z)$ where $α$ is a positive parameter. Uniform Plancherel-Rotach type asymptotic formulas are obtained in the entire complex plane including a neighborhood of the origin, and our results agree with the ones obtained earlier in [{\it SIAM J.\;Math.\;Anal} {\bf 25} (1994)] and [{{\it Proc.\;Amer.\;Math.\;Soc.\,}{\bf138} (2010)}].
In this contribution we deal with a varying discrete Sobolev inner product involving the Jacobi weight. Our aim is to study the asymptotic properties of the corresponding orthogonal polynomials and the behavior of their zeros. We are interested in Mehler-Heine type formulae because they describe the essential differences from the point of view of the asymptotic behavior between these Sobolev orthogonal polynomials and the Jacobi ones. Moreover, this asymptotic behavior provides an approximation of the zeros of the Sobolev polynomials in terms of the zeros of other well-known special functions.…
We consider orthogonal polynomials p_n with respect to an exponential weight function w(x) = exp(-P(x)). The related equations for the recurrence coefficients have been explored by many people, starting essentially with Laguerre [49], in order to study special continued fractions, recurrence relations, and various asymptotic expansions (G. Freud's contribution [28, 56]). Most striking example is n = 2tw_n + w_n(w_n+1 + w_n + w_n-1) for the recurrence coefficients p_n+1 = xp_n - w_np_n-1 of the orthogonal polynomials related to the weight w(x) = exp(-4(tx^3 + x^4)) (notation of [26, pp. 34-36])…
Given a finite set $F=\{f_1,\cdots ,f_k\}$ of nonnegative integers (written in increasing size) and a classical discrete family $(p_n)_n$ of orthogonal polynomials (Charlier, Meixner, Krawtchouk or Hahn), we consider the Casorati determinant $\det(p_{f_i}(x+j-1))_{i,j=1,\cdots,k}$. In this paper we prove a nice invariant property for this kind of Casorati determinants when the set $F$ is changed by $I(F)=\{0,1,2,\cdots,\max F\}\setminus \{\max F-f:f\in F\}$. This symmetry is related to the existence of higher order difference equations for the orthogonal polynomials with respect to certain Chr…
The search for a canonical set of eigenvectors of the discrete Fourier transform has been ongoing for more than three decades. The goal is to find an orthogonal basis of eigenvectors which would approximate Hermite functions -- the eigenfunctions of the continuous Fourier transform. This eigenbasis should also have some degree of analytical tractability and should allow for efficient numerical computations. In this paper we provide a partial solution to these problems. First, we construct an explicit basis of (non-orthogonal) eigenvectors of the discrete Fourier transform, thus extending the r…
We consider a general discrete Sobolev inner product involving the Hahn difference operator, so this includes the well--known difference operators $\mathscr{D}_{q}$ and $Δ$ and, as a limit case, the derivative operator. The objective is twofold. On the one hand, we construct the ladder operators for the corresponding nonstandard orthogonal polynomials and we obtain the second--order difference equation satisfied by these polynomials. On the other hand, we generalise some related results appeared in the literature as we are working in a more general framework. Moreover, we will show that all th…
Given a sequence of polynomials $(p_n)_n$, an algebra of operators $\mathcal{A}$ acting in the linear space of polynomials and an operator $D_p\in \mathcal{A}$ with $D_p(p_n)=np_n$, we form a new sequence of polynomials $(q_n)_n$ by considering a linear combination of $m$ consecutive $p_n$: $q_n=p_n+\sum_{j=1}^mβ_{n,j}p_{n-j}$. Using the concept of $\mathcal{D}$-operator, we determine the structure of the sequences $β_{n,j}, j=1,\ldots,m,$ in order that the polynomials $(q_n)_n$ are common eigenfunctions of an operator in the algebra $\mathcal{A}$. As an application, from the classical discret…
Contiguous hypergeometric relations for semiclassical discrete orthogonal polynomials are described as Christoffel and Geronimus transformations. Using the Christoffel-Geronimus-Uvarov formulas quasi-determinatal expressions for the shifted semiclassical discrete orthogonal polynomials are obtained.
We give a survey of the connection between orthogonal polynomials, Toda lattices and related lattices, and Painlevé equations (discrete and continuous).
We show that a confluent case of the big q-Jacobi polynomials P_n(x;a,b,c;q), which corresponds to a=b=-c, leads to a discrete orthogonality relation for imaginary values of the parameter a (outside of its commonly known domain 0<a< q^{-1}). Since P_n(x;q^α, q^α, -q^α; q) tend to Gegenbauer (or ultraspherical) polynomials in the limit as q->1, this family represents yet another q-extension of these classical polynomials, different from the continuous q-ultraspherical polynomials of Rogers. The dual family with respect to the polynomials P_n(x;a,a,-a;q) (i.e., the dual discrete q-ultraspherical…
Let D_v the difference operator and q-difference operators defined by D_ωp(x) = \frac{p(x+ω)-p(x)}ω and D_q p(x) = \frac{p(qx)-p(x)}{(q-1)x}, respectively. Let U and V be two moment regular linear functionals and let (P_n)_n and Q_n)_n be their corresponding orthogonal polynomial sequences (OPS). We discuss an inverse problem in the theory of discrete orthogonal polynomials involving the above two OPS assuming that their difference derivatives $D_ν$ of higher orders m and k (resp.) are connected by a linear algebraic structure relation such as $$ \sum_{i=0}^M a_{i,n} D_ν^m P_{n+m-i}(x) = \sum_…
We consider multiple orthogonal polynomials with respect to Nikishin systems generated by two measures $(σ_1, σ_2)$ with unbounded supports ($\mbox{supp} \, σ_1 \subseteq \mathbb{R}_+$, $\mbox{supp} \, σ_2 \subseteq \,\mathbb{R}_-$) and $σ_2$ is discrete. A Nikishin type equilibrium problem in the presence of an external field acting on $\mathbb{R}_+$ and a constraint on $ \mathbb{R}_-$ is stated and solved. The solution is used for deriving the contracted zero distribution of the associated multiple orthogonal polynomials.
We consider the following discrete Sobolev inner product involving the Gegenbauer weight $$(f,g)_S:=\int_{-1}^1f(x)g(x)(1-x^2)^αdx+M\big[f^{(j)}(-1)g^{(j)}(-1)+f^{(j)}(1)g^{(j)}(1)\big],$$ where $α>-1,$ $j\in \mathbb{N}\cup \{0\},$ and $M>0.$ Let $\{Q_n^{(α,M,j)}\}_{n\geq0}$ be the sequence of orthogonal polynomials with respect to the above inner product. These polynomials are eigenfunctions of a differential operator $\mathbf{T}. $ We establish the asymptotic behavior of the corresponding eigenvalues. Furthermore, we calculate the exact value $$r_0 = \lim_{n\rightarrow \infty}\frac{\log \lef…
This survey paper discusses the history of approximation formulas for n-th order derivatives by integrals involving orthogonal polynomials. There is a large but rather disconnected corpus of literature on such formulas. We give some results in greater generality than in the literature. Notably we unify the continuous and discrete case. We make many side remarks, for instance on wavelets, Mantica's Fourier-Bessel functions and Greville's minimum R_alpha formulas in connection with discrete smoothing.
The discrete cosine transforms of types V--VIII are generalized to the antisymmetric and symmetric multivariate discrete cosine transforms. Four families of discretely and continuously orthogonal Chebyshev-like polynomials corresponding to the antisymmetric and symmetric generalizations of cosine functions are introduced. Each family forms an orthogonal basis of the space of all polynomials with respect to some weighted integral. Cubature formulas, which correspond to these families of polynomials and which stem from the developed discrete cosine transforms, are derived. Examples of three-dime…
This is the full version of "Uniform Asymptotics for Polynomials Orthogonal With Respect to a General Class of Discrete Weights and Universality Results for Associated Ensembles: Announcement of Results" appearing on this server and also published in IMRN 2003, no. 15, pp. 821-858.
In [Castillo \& Mbouna, Indag. Math. {\bf 31} (2020) 223-234], the concept of $π_N$-coherent pairs of order $(m,k)$ with index $M$ is introduced. This definition, implicitly related with the standard derivative operator, automatically leaves out the so-called discrete orthogonal polynomials. The purpose of this note is twofold: first we use the (discrete) Hahn difference operator and rewrite the known results in this framework; second, as an application, we describe exhaustively the (discrete) self-coherent pairs in the situation whether $M=0$, $N\leq2$, and $(m,k)=(1,0)$. This is proved by de…
A class of cross-shaped difference operators on a two dimensional lattice is introduced. The main feature of the operators in this class is that their formal eigenvectors consist of multiple orthogonal polynomials. In other words, this scheme generalizes the classical connection between Jacobi matrices and orthogonal polynomials to the case of operators on lattices. Furthermore we also show how to obtain 2D discrete Schrödinger operators out of this construction and give a number of explicit examples based on known families of multiple orthogonal polynomials.
In this paper we introduce a notion of duality for matrix valued orthogonal polynomials with respect to a measure supported on the nonnegative integers. We show that the dual families are closely related to certain difference operators acting on the matrix orthogonal polynomials. These operators belong to the so called Fourier algebras, which play a key role in the construction of the families. In order to illustrate duality, we describe a family of Charlier type matrix orthogonal polynomials with explicit shift operators which allow us to find explicit formulas for three term recurrences, dif…
The Cholesky factorization of the moment matrix is considered for discrete orthogonal polynomials of hypergeometrical type. We derive the Laguerre-Freud equations when the first moments of the weights are given by the ${}_1F_2$, ${}_2F_2$ and ${}_3F_2$ generalized hypergeometrical functions.
The Cholesky factorization of the moment matrix is applied to discrete orthogonal polynomials on the homogeneous lattice. In particular, semiclassical discrete orthogonal polynomials, which are built in terms of a discrete Pearson equation, are studied. The Laguerre-Freud structure semi-infinite matrix that models the shifts by $\pm 1$ in the independent variable of the set of orthogonal polynomials is introduced. In the semiclassical case it is proven that this Laguerre-Freud matrix is banded. From the well known fact that moments of the semiclassical weights are logarithmic derivatives of ge…
Over the last decade it has become clear that discrete Painlevé equations appear in a wide range of important mathematical and physical problems. Thus, the question of recognizing a given non-autonomous recurrence as a discrete Painlevé equation and determining its type according to Sakai's classification scheme, understanding whether it is equivalent to some known (model) example, and especially finding an explicit change of coordinates transforming it to such an example, becomes one of the central ones. Fortunately, Sakai's geometric theory provides an almost algorithmic procedure for answer…
In this paper matrix orthogonal polynomials in the real line are described in terms of a Riemann--Hilbert problem. This approach provides an easy derivation of discrete equations for the corresponding matrix recursion coefficients. The discrete equation is explicitly derived in the matrix Freud case, associated with matrix quartic potentials. It is shown that, when the initial condition and the measure are simultaneously triangularizable, this matrix discrete equation possesses the singularity confinement property, independently if the solution under consideration is given by recursion coeffic…
The dual discrete $q$-ultraspherical polynomials $D_n^{(s)}(μ(x;s)|q)$ correspond to indeterminate moment problem and, therefore, have one-parameter family of extremal orthogonality relations. It is shown that special cases of dual discrete $q$-ultraspherical polynomials $D_n^{(s)}(μ(x;s)|q)$, when $s=q^{-1}$ and $s=q$, are directly connected with $q^{-1}$-Hermite polynomials. These connections are given in an explicit form. Using these relations, all extremal orthogonality relations for these special cases of polynomials $D_n^{(s)}(μ(x;s)|q)$ are found.
We construct new families of discrete vector orthogonal polynomials that have the property to be eigenfunctions of some difference operator. They are extensions of Charlier, Meixner and Kravchuk polynomial systems. The ideas behind our approach lie in the studies of bispectral operators. We exploit automorphisms of associative algebras which transform elementary (vector) orthogonal polynomial systems which are eigenfunctions of a difference operator into other systems of this type. While the extension of Charlier polynomilas is well known it is obtained by different methods. The extension of M…
Several kinds of q-orthogonal polynomials with |q|=1 are constructed as the main parts of the eigenfunctions of new solvable discrete quantum mechanical systems. Their orthogonality weight functions consist of quantum dilogarithm functions, which are a natural extension of the Euler gamma functions and the q-gamma functions (q-shifted factorials). The dimensions of the orthogonal spaces are finite. These q-orthogonal polynomials are expressed in terms of the Askey-Wilson polynomials and their certain limit forms.
In our previous papers, the Wronskian identities for the Hermite, Laguerre and Jacobi polynomials and the Casoratian identities for the Askey-Wilson polynomial and its reduced form polynomials were presented. These identities are naturally derived through quantum mechanical formulation of the classical orthogonal polynomials; ordinary quantum mechanics for the former and discrete quantum mechanics with pure imaginary shifts for the latter. In this paper we present the corresponding identities for the discrete quantum mechanics with real shifts. Infinitely many Casoratian identities for the $q$…
