We study mapping properties of operators with kernels defined via a combination of continuous and discrete orthogonal polynomials, which provide an abstract formulation of quantum (q-) Fourier type systems. We prove Ismail conjecture regarding the existence of a reproducing kernel structure behind these kernels, by establishing a link with Saitoh theory of linear transformations in Hilbert space. The results are illustrated with Fourier kernels with ultraspherical weights, their continuous q-extensions and generalizations. As a byproduct of this approach, a new class of sampling theorems is obtained, as well as Neumann type expansions in Bessel and q-Bessel functions.
Fourier transform of multivariate orthogonal polynomials on the unit ball are obtained. By using Parseval's identity, a new family of multivariate orthogonal functions are introduced. The results are expressed in terms of the continuous Hahn polynomials.
In this paper Fourier transform of multivariate orthogonal polynomials on the simplex is presented. A new family of multivariate orthogonal functions is obtained by using the Parseval's identity and several recurrence relations are derived.
We exhibit three classes of compactly supported functions which provide reproducing kernels for the Sobolev spaces $H^δ(\R^d)$ of arbitrary order $\,δ>d/2.\,$ Our method of construction is based on a new class of oscillatory integral transforms that incorporate radial Fourier transforms and Hankel transforms.
In the paper we study the multipliers of Fourier series in polynomials orthogonal in continuous-discrete Sobolev's spaces. Multiplier Theorem for Fourier-Sobolev series is obtained. This result is based on the representation of the Fejér kernel, on the construction of the "humpbacked majorant" and weighted estimates of maximal functions.
Orthogonal polynomials and the Fourier orthogonal series on a cone of revolution in $\mathbb{R}^{d+1}$ are studied. It is shown that orthogonal polynomials with respect to the weight function $(1-t)^γ(t^2-\|x\|^2)^{μ-\frac12}$ on the cone $\mathbb{V}^{d+1} = \{(x,t): \|x\| \le t \le 1\}$ are eigenfunctions of a second order differential operator, with eigenvalues depending only on the degree of the polynomials, and the reproducing kernels of these polynomials satisfy a closed formula that has a one-dimensional chacteristic. The latter leads to a convolution structure on the cone, which is then…
In this paper, we prove that the partial sum process of general orthogonal series is a geometric 2-rough process under the same condition as in Menshov-Rademacher Theorem. For Fourier series, the condition can be improved, and an equivalent condition on the limit function is identified.
We obtain the exact-order estimates for approximations by Fourier sums, best approximations and best orthogonal trigonometric approximations in metrics of spaces L_s, 1\leq s<\infty, of classes of 2π-periodic functions, whose (ψ,β)-derivatives belong to unit ball of the space L_\infty.
We study orthogonal structures and Fourier orthogonal series on the surface of a paraboloid $\mathbb{V}_0^{d+1} = \{(x,t): \|x\| = \sqrt{t}, \, x \in \mathbb{R}^d, \, 0\le t<1\}$. The reproducing kernels of the orthogonal polynomials with respect to $t^β(1-t)^γ$ on $\mathbb{V}_0^{d+1}$ are related to the reproducing kernels of the Jacobi polynomials on the parabolic domain $\{(x_1,x_2): x_1^2 \le x_2 \le 1\}$ in $\mathbb{R}^2$. This connection serves as an essential tool for our study of the Fourier orthogonal series on the surface of the paraboloid, which allow us, in particular, to study the…
Under the assumption that orthogonal polynomials of several variables admit an addition formula, we can define a convolution structure and use it to study the Fourier orthogonal expansions on a homogeneous space. We define a maximal function via the convolution structure induced by the addition formula and use it to establish a Marcinkiewicz multiplier theorem. For the homogeneous space defined by a family of weight functions on conic domains, we show that the maximal function is bounded by the Hardy-Littlewood maximal function so that the multiplier theorem holds on conic domains.
For a bilinear form obtained by adding a Dirac mass to a positive definite moment functional in several variables, explicit formulas of orthogonal polynomials are derived from the orthogonal polynomials associated with the moment functional. Explicit formula for the reproducing kernel is also derived and used to establish certain inequalities for classical orthogonal polynomials.
The search for a canonical set of eigenvectors of the discrete Fourier transform has been ongoing for more than three decades. The goal is to find an orthogonal basis of eigenvectors which would approximate Hermite functions -- the eigenfunctions of the continuous Fourier transform. This eigenbasis should also have some degree of analytical tractability and should allow for efficient numerical computations. In this paper we provide a partial solution to these problems. First, we construct an explicit basis of (non-orthogonal) eigenvectors of the discrete Fourier transform, thus extending the r…
Orthogonal polynomials and expansions are studied for the weight function $h_κ^2(x) \|x\|^{2ν} (1-\|x\|^2)^{μ-1/2}$ on the unit ball of $\mathbb{R}^d$, where $h_κ$ is a reflection invariant function, and for related weight function on the simplex of $\mathbb{R}^d$. A concise formula for the reproducing kernels of orthogonal subspaces is derived and used to study summability of the Fourier orthogonal expansions.
In this paper we investigate how the short-time Fourier transform can be extended in a Clifford setting. We prove some of the main properties of the Clifford short-time Fourier transform such as the orthogonality relation, the reconstruction property and the reproducing kernel formula. Moreover, we show the effects of modulating and translating the signal and the window function, respectively. Finally, we demonstrate the Lieb's uncertainty principle for the Clifford short-time Fourier transform.
We study the orthogonal complement of the Hilbert subspace considered by by van Eijndhoven and Meyers in [J. Math. Anal. Appl. 146 (1990), no. 1, 89--98} and associated to holomorphic Hermite polynomials. A polyanalytic orthonormal basis is given and the explicit expressions of the corresponding reproducing kernel functions and Segal--Bargmann integral transforms are provided.
The two-sided quaternionic Fourier transformation (QFT) was introduced in \cite{Ell:1993} for the analysis of 2D linear time-invariant partial-differential systems. In further theoretical investigations \cite{10.1007/s00006-007-0037-8, EH:DirUP_QFT} a special split of quaternions was introduced, then called $\pm$split. In the current \change{chapter} we analyze this split further, interpret it geometrically as \change{an} \emph{orthogonal 2D planes split} (OPS), and generalize it to a freely steerable split of $\H$ into two orthogonal 2D analysis planes. The new general form of the OPS split a…
By using Fourier transforms of two symmetric sequences of finite orthogonal polynomials, we introduce two new classes of finite orthogonal functions and obtain their orthogonality relations via Parseval's identity.
Orthogonal polynomials for a family of weight functions on $[-1,1]^2$, $$ \CW_{\a,\b,\g}(x,y) = |x+y|^{2\a+1} |x-y|^{2\b+1} (1-x^2)^\g(1-y^2)^{\g}, $$ are studied and shown to be related to the Koornwinder polynomials defined on the region bounded by two lines and a parabola. In the case of $\g = \pm 1/2$, an explicit basis of orthogonal polynomials is given in terms of Jacobi polynomials and a closed formula for the reproducing kernel is obtained. The latter is used to study the convergence of orthogonal expansions for these weight functions.
We study the asymptotic properties of a class of multiple orthogonal polynomials with respect to a Nikishin system generated by two measures $(σ_1, σ_2)$ with unbounded supports (${supp}(σ_1) \subset \mathbb{R}_+$, ${supp}(σ_2) \subset \mathbb{R}_-$), and such that the second measure $σ_2$ is discrete. The weak asymptotics for these polynomials was obtained previously by V. Sorokin. We use his result and the Riemann-Hilbert analysis to derive the strong asymptotics of these polynomials and of the reproducing kernel.
Let $\operatorname{St}^{n}_{k}\subset\mathbb{R}^{n\times k}$ be the set of all $n\times k$ matrices whose columns are mutually orthogonal and of unit Euclidean length, and let $μ_{n,k}$ be the surface measure corresponding to this embedding. We calculate the first term of the asymptotic expansion of the Fourier transform of $μ_{n,k}$ for most directions, using the method of stationary phase. The asymptotic behavior near the remaining directions is unknown. We note some interesting connections to trace moments of orthogonal matrices, discrete random walks, Bessel functions, and pose some questi…
Wiener used the Poisson kernel for the Hermite polynomials to deal with the classical Fourier transform. Askey, Atakishiyev and Suslov used this approach to obtain a q-Fourier transform by using the continuous q-Hermite polynomials. Rahman and Suslov extended this result by taking the Askey--Wilson polynomials, considered to be the most general continuous classical orthogonal polynomials. The theory of q-Fourier transformation is further extended here by considering a nonsymmetric version of the Poisson kernel with Askey--Wilson polynomials. This approach enables us to obtain some new results,…
We prove a multiplier version of the Bernstein inequality on the complex sphere. Included in this is a new result relating a bivariate sum involving Jacobi polynomials and Gegenbauer polynomials, which relates the sum of reproducing kernels on spaces of polynomials irreducibly invariant under the unitary group, with the reproducing kernel of the sum of these spaces, which is irreducibly invariant under the action of the orthogonal group.
Let $f_k$ be the $k$-th Fourier coefficient of a function $f$ in terms of the orthonormal Hermite, Laguerre or Jacobi polynomials. We give necessary and sufficient conditions on $f$ for the inequality $\sum_{k}|f_k|^2θ^k<\infty$ to hold with $θ>1$. As a by-product new orthogonality relations for the Hermite and Laguerre polynomials are found. The basic machinery for the proofs is provided by the theory of reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces.
Generalizing previous work of Iwaniec, Luo, and Sarnak (2000), we use information from one-level density theorems to estimate the proportion of non-vanishing of $L$-functions in a family at a low-lying height on the critical line (measured by the analytic conductor). To solve the Fourier optimization problems that arise, we provide a unified framework based on the theory of reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces of entire functions (there is one such space associated to each symmetry type). Explicit expressions for the reproducing kernels are given. We also revisit the problem of estimating the hei…
We prove qualitative and quantitative results concerning the asymptotic density in dilates of centered convex bodies of the frequency vectors of orthogonal exponential bases and frames associated to bounded domains in Euclidean space.
The monogenic Hua-Radon transform is defined as an orthogonal projection on holomorphic functions in the Lie sphere. Extending the work of Sabadini and Sommen, J. Geom. Anal. 29 (2019), 2709-2737, we determine its reproducing kernel. Integrating this kernel over the Stiefel manifold yields a linear combination of the zonal spherical monogenics. Using the reproducing properties of those monogenics we obtain an inversion for the monogenic Hua-Radon transform.
We consider orthogonal polynomials on the surface of a double cone or a hyperboloid of revolution, either finite or infinite in axis direction, and on the solid domain bounded by such a surface and, when the surface is finite, by hyperplanes at the two ends. On each domain a family of orthogonal polynomials, related to the Gegebauer polynomials, is study and shown to share two characteristic properties of spherical harmonics: they are eigenfunctions of a second order linear differential operator with eigenvalues depending only on the polynomial degree, and they satisfy an addition formula that…
We study Fourier-Bessel series on a q-linear grid, defined as expansions in complete q-orthogonal systems constructed with the third Jackson q-Bessel function, and obtain sufficient conditions for uniform convergence. The convergence results are illustrated with specific examples of expansions in q-Fourier-Bessel series.
The finite Fourier transform of a family of orthogonal polynomials $A_{n}(x)$, is the usual transform of the polynomial extended by $0$ outside their natural domain. Explicit expressions are given for the Legendre, Jacobi, Gegenbauer and Chebyshev families.
The aim of this paper is to prove that if a planar set $A$ has a difference set $Δ(A)$ satisfying $Δ(A)\subset \Z^++s$ for suitable $s$ than $A$ has at most 3 elements. This result is motivated by the conjecture that the disk has not more than 3 orthogonal exponentials. Further, we prove that if $A$ is a set of exponentials mutually orthogonal with respect to any symmetric convex set $K$ in the plane with a smooth boundary and everywhere non-vanishing curvature, then $ # (A \cap {[-q,q]}^2) \leq C(K) q$ where $C(K)$ is a constant depending only on $K$. This extends and clarifies in the plane t…
We establish new Calderón reproducing formulas for self-adjoint operators $D$ that generate strongly continuous groups with finite propagation speed. These formulas allow the analysing function to interact with $D$ through holomorphic functional calculus whilst the synthesising function interacts with $D$ through functional calculus based on the Fourier transform. We apply these to prove the embedding $H^p_D(\wedge T^*M) \subseteq L^p(\wedge T^*M)$, $1\leq p\leq 2$, for the Hardy spaces of differential forms introduced by Auscher, McIntosh and Russ, where $D=d+d^*$ is the Hodge--Dirac operator…
For each irreducible module of the symmetric group on $N$ objects there is a set of parametrized nonsymmetric Jack polynomials in $N$ variables taking values in the module. These polynomials are simultaneous eigenfunctions of a commutative set of operators, self-adjoint with respect to certain Hermitian forms. These polynomials were studied by the author and J.-G. Luque using a Yang-Baxter graph technique. This paper constructs a matrix-valued measure on the $N$-torus for which the polynomials are mutually orthogonal. The construction uses Fourier analysis techniques. Recursion relations for t…
The purpose of this article is to extend the wavelet transform to quaternion algebra using the kernel of the two-sided quaternion Fourier transform (QFT). We study some fundamental properties of this extension such as scaling, translation, rotation, Parseval's identity, inversion theorem, and a reproducing kernel, then we derive the associated Heisenberg-Pauli-Weyl uncertainty principle UP. Finally, using the quaternion Fourier representation of the CQWT we generalize the logarithmic UP and Hardy's UP to the CQWT domain.
The Hua-Radon and polarized Hua-Radon transform are two orthogonal projections defined on holomorphic functions in the Lie sphere. Both transformations can be written as integral transforms with respect to a suitable reproducing kernel. Integrating both kernels over a Stiefel manifold yields a linear combination of zonal spherical monogenics. Using an Almansi type decomposition of holomorphic functions and reproducing properties of the zonal monogenics, we obtain an inversion formula for both the Hua-Radon and the polarized Hua-Radon transform.
We study the Fourier orthogonal expansions with respect to the Laguerre type weigh functions on the conic surface of revolution and the domain bounded by such a surface. The main results include a closed form formula for the reproducing kernels, which is the kernel of the orthogonal projection operator and a pseudo convolution structure on the conic domain; the latter is shown to be bounded in an appropriate $L^p$ space and used to study mean convergence of the Cesàro means of the Laguerre expansions on conic domains.
For $\boldsymbol{\large λ} = (λ_1,\ldots,λ_d)$ with $λ_i > 0$, it is proved that \begin{equation*} \prod_{i=1}^d \frac{ 1}{(1- r x_i)^{λ_i}} = \frac{Γ(|\boldsymbol{\large λ}|)}{\prod_{i=1}^{d} Γ(λ_i)} \int_{\mathcal{T}^d} \frac{1}{ (1- r \langle x, u \rangle)^{|\boldsymbol{\large λ}|}} \prod_{i=1}^d u_i^{λ_i-1} du, \end{equation*} where $\mathcal{T}^d$ is the simplex in homogeneous coordinates of $\mathbb{R}^d$, from which a new integral relation for Gegenbuer polynomials of different indexes is deduced. The latter result is used to derive closed formulas for reproducing kernels of orthogonal …
We prove that no ball admits a non-harmonic orthogonal basis of exponentials. We use a combinatorial result, originally studied by Erd\H os, which says that the number of distances determined by $n$ points in ${\Bbb R}^d$ is at least $C_d n^{\frac{1}{d}+ε_d}$, $ε_d>0$.
Hahn polynomials of several variables can be defined by using the Jacobi polynomials on the simplex as a generating function. Starting from this connection, a number of properties for these two families of orthogonal polynomials are derived. It is shown that the Hahn polynomials appear as connecting coefficients between several families of orthogonal polynomials on the simplex. Closed-form formulas are derived for the reproducing kernels of the Hahn polynomials and Krawtchouck polynomials. As an application, the Poisson kernels for the Hahn polynomials and the Krawtchouck polynomials are shown…
Orthogonal polynomials on quadratic curves in the plane are studied. These include orthogonal polynomials on ellipses, parabolas, hyperbolas, and two lines. For an integral with respect to an appropriate weight function defined on any quadratic curve, an explicit basis of orthogonal polynomials is constructed in terms of two families of orthogonal polynomials in one variable. Convergence of the Fourier orthogonal expansions is also studied in each case. As an application, we see that the resulting bases can be used to interpolate functions on the real line with singularities of the form $|x|$,…
In continuous-time wavelet analysis, most wavelet present some kind of symmetry. Based on the Fourier and Hartley transform kernels, a new wavelet multiresolution analysis is proposed. This approach is based on a pair of orthogonal wavelet functions and is named as the Fourier-Like and Hartley-Like wavelet analysis. A Hilbert transform analysis on the wavelet theory is also included.
