We study the Fourier orthogonal expansions with respect to the Laguerre type weigh functions on the conic surface of revolution and the domain bounded by such a surface. The main results include a closed form formula for the reproducing kernels, which is the kernel of the orthogonal projection operator and a pseudo convolution structure on the conic domain; the latter is shown to be bounded in an appropriate $L^p$ space and used to study mean convergence of the Cesàro means of the Laguerre expansions on conic domains.
We study potential operators associated with Laguerre function expansions of convolution and Hermite types, and with Dunkl-Laguerre expansions. We prove qualitatively sharp estimates of the corresponding potential kernels. Then we characterize those $1 \le p,q \le \infty$, for which the potential operators are $L^p-L^q$ bounded. These results are sharp analogues of the classical Hardy-Littlewood-Sobolev fractional integration theorem in the Laguerre and Dunkl-Laguerre settings.
The necessary multiplier conditions for Laguerre expansions derived in Gasper and Trebels \cite{laguerre} are supplemented and modified. This allows us to place Markett's Cohen type inequality \cite{cohen} (up to the $\log $--case) in the general framework of necessary conditions.
We show that for $δ$ below certain critical indices there are functions whose Jacobi or Laguerre expansions have almost everywhere divergent Cesaro and Riesz means of order $δ$.
C. Markett proved a Cohen type inequality for the classical Laguerre expansions in the appropriate weighted $L^{p}$ spaces. In this paper, we get a Cohen type inequality for the Fourier expansions in terms of discrete Laguerre--Sobolev orthonormal polynomials with an arbitrary (finite) number of mass points. So, we extend the result due to B. Xh. Fejzullahu and F. Marcellán.
We present a new criterion for the weighted $L^p-L^q$ boundedness of multiplier operators for Laguerre and Hermite expansions that arise from a Laplace-Stieltjes transform. As a special case, we recover known results on weighted estimates for Laguerre and Hermite fractional integrals with a unified and simpler approach.
The aim of this note is to provide a fractional integration theorem in the framework of Laguerre expansions. The method of proof consists of establishing an asymptotic estimate for the involved kernel and then applying a method of Hedberg \cite{pro}. We combine this result with sufficient $(p,p)$ multiplier criteria of Stempak and Trebels \cite{ST}. The resulting sufficient $(p,q)$ multiplier criteria are comparable with necessary ones of Gasper and Trebels \cite{laguerre}.
Hardy's inequality for Laguerre expansions of Hermite type with the index $\al\in(\{-1/2\}\cup[1/2,\infty))^d$ is proved in the multi-dimensional setting with the exponent $3d/4$. We also obtain the sharp analogue of Hardy's inequality with $L^1$ norm replacing $H^1$ norm at the expense of increasing the exponent by an arbitrarily small value.
In this paper we investigate Lp-boundedness properties for the higher order Riesz transforms associated with Laguerre operators. Also we prove that the k-th Riesz transform is a principal value singular integral operator (modulus a constant times of the function when k is even). To establish our results we exploit a new identity connecting Riesz transforms in the Hermite and Laguerre settings.
Using the standard square--function method (based on the Poisson semigroup), multiplier conditions of Hörmander type are derived for Laguerre expansions in $L^p$--spaces with power weights in the $A_p$-range; this result can be interpreted as an ``upper end point'' multiplier criterion which is fairly good for $p$ near $1$ or near $\infty $. A weighted generalization of Kanjin's \cite{kan} transplantation theorem allows to obtain a ``lower end point'' multiplier criterion whence by interpolation nearly ``optimal'' multiplier criteria (in dependance of $p$, the order of the Laguerre polynomial,…
Uniform asymptotic expansions involving exponential and Airy functions are obtained for Laguerre polynomials $L_{n}^{(α)}(x)$, as well as complementary confluent hypergeometric functions. The expansions are valid for $n$ large and $α$ small or large, uniformly for unbounded real and complex values of $x$. The new expansions extend the range of computability of $L_n^{(α)}(x)$ compared to previous expansions, in particular with respect to higher terms and large values of $α$. Numerical evidence of their accuracy for real and complex values of $x$ is provided.
Convergent expansions are derived for three types of orthogonal polynomials: Charlier, Laguerre and Jacobi. The expansions have asymptotic properties for large values of the degree. The expansions are given in terms of functions that are special cases of the given polynomials. The method is based on expanding integrals in one or two points of the complex plane, these points being saddle points of the phase functions of the integrands.
We develop a technique of proving standard estimates in the setting of Laguerre function expansions of convolution type, which works for all admissible type multi-indices $α$ in this context. This generalizes a simpler method existing in the literature, but being valid for a restricted range of $α$. As an application, we prove that several fundamental operators in harmonic analysis of the Laguerre expansions, including maximal operators related to the heat and Poisson semigroups, Riesz transforms, Littlewood-Paley-Stein type square functions and multipliers of Laplace and Laplace-Stieltjes tra…
Homogeneous Besov and Triebel-Lizorkin spaces associated with multi-dimensional Laguerre function expansions of Hermite type with index $α\in [-1/2,\infty)^d\backslash (-1/2,1/2)^d$, $d\geq 1$, are defined and investigated. To achieve expected goals Schwartz type spaces on $R^d_+$ are introduced and then tempered type distributions are constructed. Also, ideas from a recent paper of Bui and Duong on Besov and Triebel-Lizorkin spaces associated with Hermite functions expansions are used. This means, in particular, using molecular decomposition and an appropriate form of a Calderón reproducing f…
In this paper we give sufficient conditions on a measurable function $p:(0,\infty)^n\rightarrow [1,\infty)$ in order that harmonic analysis operators (maximal operators, Riesz transforms, Littlewood--Paley functions and multipliers) associated with $α$-Laguerre polynomial expansions are bounded on the variable Lebesgue space $L^{p(\cdot)} ((0,\infty)^n, μ_α)$, where $dμ_α(x)=2^n\prod_{j=1}^n \frac{x_j^{2α_j+1} e^{-x_j^2}}{Γ(α_j+1)} dx$, being $α=(α_1, \dots, α_n)\in [0,\infty)^n$ and $x=(x_1,\dots,x_n)\in (0,\infty)^n$.
In this paper we consider the strong asymptotic behavior of Laguerre polynomials in the complex plane. The leading behavior is well known from Perron and Mehler-Heine formulas, but higher order coefficients, which are important in the context of Krall-Laguerre or Laguerre-Sobolev-type orthogonal polynomials, are notoriously difficult to compute. In this paper, we propose the use of an alternative expansion, due to Buchholz, in terms of Bessel functions of the first kind. The coefficients in this expansion can be obtained in a straightforward way using symbolic computation. As an application, w…
In this paper we establish $L^p$-boundedness properties for variation, oscillation and jump operators associated with Riesz transforms and Poisson semigroups related to Laguerre polynomial expansions.
A pair of dual frames with almost exponentially localized elements (needlets) are constructed on $\RR_+^d$ based on Laguerre functions. It is shown that the Triebel-Lizorkin and Besov spaces induced by Laguerre expansions can be characterized in terms of respective sequence spaces that involve the needlet coefficients.
Classical settings of discrete and continuous orthogonal expansions, like Laguerre, Bessel and Jacobi, are associated with second order differential operators playing the role of the Laplacian. These depend on certain parameters of type that are usually restricted to a half-line, or a product of half-lines if higher dimensions are considered. Following earlier research done by Hajmirzaahmad, we deal in this paper with Laplacians in the above-mentioned contexts with no restrictions on the type parameters and bring to attention naturally associated orthogonal systems that in fact involve the cla…
In this paper we introduce Laguerre expansions to approximate vector-valued functions expanding on the well-known scalar theorem. We apply this result to approximate $C_0$-semi\-groups and resolvent operators in abstract Banach spaces. We study certain Laguerre functions, its Laplace transforms and the convergence of Laguerre series in Lebesgue spaces. The concluding section of this paper is devote to consider some examples of $C_0$-semigroups: shift, convolution and holomorphic semigroups where some of these results are improved.
A method of proving Hardy's type inequality for orthogonal expansions is presented in a rather general setting. Then sharp multi-dimensional Hardy's inequality associated with the Laguerre functions of convolution type is proved for type index $\al\in[-1/2,\infty)^d$. The case of the standard Laguerre functions is also investigated. Moreover, the sharp analogues of Hardy's type inequality involving $L^1$ norms in place of $H^1$ norms are obtained in both settings.
We study negative powers of Laguerre differential operators in $\R$, $d\ge1$. For these operators we prove two-weight $L^p-L^q$ estimates, with ranges of $q$ depending on $p$. The case of the harmonic oscillator (Hermite operator) has recently been treated by Bongioanni and Torrea by using a straightforward approach of kernel estimates. Here these results are applied in certain Laguerre settings. The procedure is fairly direct for Laguerre function expansions of Hermite type, due to some monotonicity properties of the kernels involved. The case of Laguerre function expansions of convolution ty…
We prove some vector-valued inequalities for fractional integrals defined in the context of two different orthonormal systems of Laguerre functions. Our results are based on estimates of the corresponding kernels with precise control of the parameters involved. As an application, mixed norm estimates for the fractional integrals related to the harmonic oscillator are deduced.
In this paper, we consider the discrete Laguerre polynomials $P_{n, N}(z)$ orthogonal with respect to the weight function $w(x) = x^α e^{-N cx}$ supported on the infinite nodes $L_N = \{ x_{k,N} = \frac{k^2}{N^2}, k \in \mathbb{N} \}$. We focus on the "band-saturated region" situation when the parameter $c > \frac{π^2}{4}$. As $n \to \infty$, uniform expansions for $P_{n, n}(z)$ are achieved for $z$ in different regions in the complex plane. Typically, the Airy-function expansions and Gamma-function expansions are derived for $z$ near the endpoints of the band and the origin, respectively. The…
Burchnall's method to invert the Feldheim-Watson linearization formula for the Hermite polynomials is extended to all polynomial families in the Askey-scheme and its $q$-analogue. The resulting expansion formulas are made explicit for several families corresponding to measures with infinite support, including the Wilson and Askey-Wilson polynomials. An integrated version gives the possibility to give alternate expression for orthogonal polynomials with respect to a modified weight. This gives expansions for polynomials, such as Hermite, Laguerre, Meixner, Charlier, Meixner-Pollaczek and big $q…
In this paper we give a criterion to prove boundedness results for several operators from $H^1((0,\infty),γ_α)$ to $L^1((0,\infty),γ_α)$ and also from $L^\infty((0,\infty),γ_α)$ to $\BMO((0,\infty),γ_α)$, with respect to the probability measure $dγ_α(x)=\frac{2}{Γ(α+1)} x^{2α+1} e^{-x^2} dx$ on $(0,\infty)$ when ${α>-\frac12}$. We shall apply it to establish endpoint estimates for Riesz transforms, maximal operators, Littlewood-Paley functions, multipliers of Laplace transform type, fractional integrals and variation operators in the Laguerre setting.
In 1965 K. de Leeuw \cite{deleeuw} proved among other things in the Fourier transform setting: {\it If a continuous function $m(ξ_1, \ldots ,ξ_n)$ on ${\bf R}^n$ generates a bounded transformation on $L^p({\bf R}^n),\; 1\le p \le \infty ,$ then its trace $\tilde{m}(ξ_1, \ldots ,ξ_m)=m(ξ_1, \ldots ,ξ_m,0,\ldots ,0), \; m<n,$ generates a bounded transformation on $L^p({\bf R}^m)$. } In this paper, the analogous problem is discussed in the setting of Laguerre expansions of different orders.
Let $f_k$ be the $k$-th Fourier coefficient of a function $f$ in terms of the orthonormal Hermite, Laguerre or Jacobi polynomials. We give necessary and sufficient conditions on $f$ for the inequality $\sum_{k}|f_k|^2θ^k<\infty$ to hold with $θ>1$. As a by-product new orthogonality relations for the Hermite and Laguerre polynomials are found. The basic machinery for the proofs is provided by the theory of reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces.
The aim of this paper is to construct sup-exponentially localized kernels and frames in the context of classical orthogonal expansions, namely, expansions in Jacobi polynomials, spherical harmonics, orthogonal polynomials on the ball and simplex, and Hermite and Laguerre functions.
The classical orthogonal polynomials (Hermite, Laguerre and Jacobi) are involved in a vast number of applications in physics and engineering. When large degrees $n$ are needed, the use of recursion to compute the polynomials is not a good strategy for computation and a more efficient approach, such as the use of asymptotic expansions,is recommended. In this paper, we give an overview of the asymptotic expansions considered in [8] for computing Laguerre polynomials $L^{(α)}_n(x)$ for bounded values of the parameter $α$. Additionally, we show examples of the computational performance of an asymp…
Hardy's inequality on $H^p$ spaces, $p\in(0,1]$, in the context of orthogonal expansions is investigated for general basis on a subset of $\mathbb{R}^d$ with Lebesgue measure. The obtained result is applied to various Hermite, Laguerre, and Jacobi expansions. For that purpose some delicate estimates of the higher order derivatives for the underlying functions and of the associated heat kernels are proved. Moreover, sharpness of studied Hardy's inequalities is justified by a construction of an explicit counterexample, which is adjusted to all considered settings.
Coefficients in the expansions of the form $\partial P_{n}(λ;z)}/\partialλ=\sum_{k=0}^{n}a_{nk}(λ)P_{k}(λ;z)$, where $P_{n}(λ;z)$ is the $n$th classical (the generalized Laguerre, Gegenbauer or Jacobi) orthogonal polynomial of variable $z$ and $λ$ is a parameter, are evaluated. A method we adopt in the present paper differs from that used by Fröhlich [Integral Transforms Spec. Funct. 2 (1994) 253] for the Jacobi polynomials and by Koepf [Integral Transforms Spec. Funct. 5 (1997) 69] for the generalized Laguerre and the Gegenbauer polynomials.
We write spectral decomposition of the hypergeometric differential operator on the contour $Re z=1/2$ (multiplicity of spectrum is 2). As a result, we obtain an integral transform that differs from the Jacobi (or Olevsky) transform. We also try to do a step towards vector-valued special functions and construct a 3F2 orthogonal basis in the space of functions having values in 2-dimensional space. This basis is lying in an analytic continuation of continuous dual Hahn polynomials with respect to number $n$ of a polynomial. In Addendum, we discuss a vector-value analog of the Meixner--Pollachek o…
