We give a Gegenbauer expansion of the two variable function $| s - t |^α$ in terms of the ultraspherical polynomials $C_l^λ (s)$ and $C^μ_m (t)$.
Generalization, specialization, and limits of the expansion are also discussed.
We develop complex Jacobi, Gegenbauer and Chebyshev polynomial expansions for the kernels associated with power-law fundamental solutions of the polyharmonic equation on d-dimensional Euclidean space. From these series representations we derive Fourier expansions in certain rotationally-invariant coordinate systems and Gegenbauer polynomial expansions in Vilenkin's polyspherical coordinates. We compare both of these expansions to generate addition theorems for the azimuthal Fourier coefficients.
Using well-known techniques, we establish Hardy-Littlewood-type and Hausdorff-Young-type inequalities for generalized Gegenbauer expansions and their unification.
A generalization of the generating function for Gegenbauer polynomials is introduced whose coefficients are given in terms of associated Legendre functions of the second kind. We discuss how our expansion represents a generalization of several previously derived formulae such as Heine's formula and Heine's reciprocal square-root identity. We also show how this expansion can be used to compute hyperspherical harmonic expansions for power-law fundamental solutions of the polyharmonic equation.
For a fundamental solution of Laplace's equation on the $R$-radius $d$-dimensional hypersphere, we compute the azimuthal Fourier coefficients in closed form in two and three dimensions. We also compute the Gegenbauer polynomial expansion for a fundamental solution of Laplace's equation in hyperspherical geometry in geodesic polar coordinates. From this expansion in three-dimensions, we derive an addition theorem for the azimuthal Fourier coefficients of a fundamental solution of Laplace's equation on the 3-sphere. Applications of our expansions are given, namely closed-form solutions to Poisso…
Using the expansion in a Fourier-Gegenbauer series, we prove several identities that extend and generalize known results. In particular, it is proved among other results, that \begin{equation*} \sum_{n=0}^\infty\frac{1}{4^n}\binom{2n}{n}\frac{z-2n}{\binom{z-1/2}{n}}\binom{z}{n}^3 =\frac{\tan(πz)}π \end{equation*} for all complex numbers $z$ such that $\Re(z)>-\frac{1}{2}$ and $z\notin\frac{1}{2}+\mathbb{Z}$.
Orthogonal polynomials and expansions are studied for the weight function $h_κ^2(x) \|x\|^{2ν} (1-\|x\|^2)^{μ-1/2}$ on the unit ball of $\mathbb{R}^d$, where $h_κ$ is a reflection invariant function, and for related weight function on the simplex of $\mathbb{R}^d$. A concise formula for the reproducing kernels of orthogonal subspaces is derived and used to study summability of the Fourier orthogonal expansions.
On even-dimensional Euclidean space for integer powers of the Laplace operator greater than or equal to half the dimension, a fundamental solution of the polyharmonic equation has binomial and logarithmic behavior. Gegenbauer polynomial expansions of these fundamental solutions are obtained through a limit applied to Gegenbauer expansions of a power-law fundamental solution of the polyharmonic equation. This limit is accomplished through parameter differentiation. By combining these results with previously derived azimuthal Fourier series expansions for these binomial and logarithmic fundament…
Using the direct relation between the Gegenbauer polynomials and the Ferrers function of the first kind, we compute interrelations between certain Jacobi polynomials, Meixner polynomials, and the Ferrers function of the first kind. We then compute Rodrigues-type and orthogonality relations for Ferrers functions of the first and second kinds. In the remainder of the paper using the relation between Gegenbauer polynomials and the Ferrers function of the first kind we derive connection and linearization relations, some definite integral and series expansions, some asymptotic expansions of Mehler-…
We perform global and local analysis of oscillatory and damped spherically symmetric fundamental solutions for Helmholtz operators $\big({-}Δ\pmβ^2\big)$ in $d$-dimensional, $R$-radius hyperbolic ${\mathbf H}_R^d$ and hyperspherical ${\mathbf S}_R^d$ geometry, which represent Riemannian manifolds with positive constant and negative constant sectional curvature respectively. In particular, we compute closed-form expressions for fundamental solutions of $\big({-}Δ\pm β^2\big)$ on ${\mathbf H}_R^d$, $\big({-}Δ+β^2\big)$ on ${\mathbf S}_R^d$, and present two candidate fundamental solutions for $\b…
In this paper we generalize and specialize generating functions for classical orthogonal polynomials, namely Jacobi, Gegenbauer, Chebyshev and Legendre polynomials. We derive a generalization of the generating function for Gegenbauer polynomials through extension a two element sequence of generating functions for Jacobi polynomials. Specializations of generating functions are accomplished through the re-expression of Gauss hypergeometric functions in terms of less general functions. Definite integrals which correspond to the presented orthogonal polynomial series expansions are also given.
Generalized translation operators for orthogonal expansions with respect to families of weight functions on the unit ball and on the standard simplex are studied. They are used to define convolution structures and modulus of smoothness for these regions, which are in turn used to characterize the best approximation by polynomials in the weighted $L^p$ spaces. In one variable, this becomes the generalized translation operator for the Gegenbauer polynomial expansions.
Recurrences for positive definite functions in terms of the space dimension have been used in several fields of applications. Such recurrences typically relate to properties of the system of special functions characterizing the geometry of the underlying space. In the case of the sphere ${\mathbb S}^{d-1} \subset {\mathbb R}^d$ the (strict) positive definiteness of the zonal function $f(\cos θ)$ is determined by the signs of the coefficients in the expansion of $f$ in terms of the Gegenbauer polynomials $\{C^λ_n\}$, with $λ=(d-2)/2$. Recent results show that classical differentiation and integ…
We provide an algebraic interpretation for two classes of continuous $q$-polynomials. Rogers' continuous $q$-Hermite polynomials and continuous $q$-ultraspherical polynomials are shown to realize, respectively, bases for representation spaces of the $q$-Heisenberg algebra and a $q$-deformation of the Euclidean algebra in these dimensions. A generating function for the continuous $q$-Hermite polynomials and a $q$-analog of the Fourier-Gegenbauer expansion are naturally obtained from these models.
Surprisingly, apart from some special cases, simple asymptotic expansions for the associated Legendre functions $P_ν^μ(z)$ and $Q_ν^μ(z)$ for large degree $ν$ or large order $μ$ are not available in the literature. The main purpose of the present paper is to fill this gap by deriving simple (inverse) factorial expansions for these functions and provide sharp and realistic bounds on their error terms. Analogous results for the Ferrers functions and the closely related Gegenbauer function are also included. In the cases that $ν$ is an integer or $2μ$ is an odd integer, many of these new expansio…
Several expansions of the solutions of the double-confluent Heun equation in terms of the Kummer confluent hypergeometric functions are presented. Three different sets of these functions are examined. Discussing the expansions without a pre-factor, it is shown that two of these functions provide expansions the coefficients of which obey three-term recurrence relations, while for the third confluent hypergeometric function the corresponding recurrence relation generally involves five-terms. The latter relation is reduced to a three-term one only in the case when the double-confluent Heun equati…
Motivated by several conjectures posed in the paper " Completely monotonic degrees for a difference between the logarithmic and psi functions",we confirm in this work some conjectures on completely monotonic degrees of remainders of the asymptotic expansion of the logarithm of the gamma function and the digamma function and we give two bounded for this degrees.
We introduce completely monotonic functions of order $r>0$ and show that the remainders in asymptotic expansions of the logarithm of Barnes double gamma function and Euler's gamma function give rise to completely monotonic functions of any positive integer order.
This paper provides the details of Remark 5.4 in the author's paper "Askey-Wilson polynomials as zonal spherical functions on the SU(2) quantum group", SIAM J. Math. Anal. 24 (1993), 795-813. In formula (5.9) of the 1993 paper a two-parameter class of Askey-Wilson polynomials was expanded as a finite Fourier series with a product of two 3phi2's as Fourier coefficients. The proof given there used the quantum group interpretation. Here this identity will be generalized to a 3-parameter class of Askey-Wilson polynomials being expanded in terms of continuous q-ultraspherical polynomials with a pro…
Asymptotic expansions for solutions of differential equations having a coalescing turning point and double pole, with an application to Legendre functions
We provide a double-series formula for $π$ obtained using the Fourier series expansion of $1/\cos(x/4)$ and applying the Parseval-Plancherel identity. We show that such a formula involves the Grothendieck-Krivine constant, and that the latter can therefore be expressed as a double series as well.
We prove a Hardy inequality for ultraspherical expansions by using a proper ground state representation. From this result we deduce some uncertainty principles for this kind of expansions. Our result also implies a Hardy inequality on spheres with a potential having a double singularity.
The discrete Chebyshev polynomials $t_n(x,N)$ are orthogonal with respect to a distribution function, which is a step function with jumps one unit at the points $x=0,1,..., N-1$, N being a fixed positive integer. By using a double integral representation, we derive two asymptotic expansions for $t_{n}(aN,N+1)$ in the double scaling limit, namely, $N\rightarrow\infty$ and $n/N\rightarrow b$, where $b\in(0,1)$ and $a\in(-\infty,\infty)$. One expansion involves the confluent hypergeometric function and holds uniformly for $a\in[0,1/2]$, and the other involves the Gamma function and holds uniforml…
