Let $s_d(p,a) = \min \{k | a = \sum_{i=1}^{k}a_i^d, a_i\in \ff_p^*\}$ be the smallest number of d-th powers in the finite field F_p, sufficient to represent the number a in F_p^*. Then $$g_d(p) = max_{a in F_p^*} s_d(p,a)$$ gives an answer to Waring's Problem mod p.
We first introduce cyclotomic integers n(k,ν), which then allow to state and solve Waring's problem mod p in terms of only the cyclotomic numbers (i,j) of order d.
We generalize the reciprocal of the Gaussian period equation G(T) to a C-differentiable function I(T) in Q[[T]], which also satisfies I'(T)/I(T) in Z[[T]]. We show that and why a\equiv -1 mod F_p^{*d} (the classical "Stufe", if d = 2) behaves special: Here (and only here) I(T) is in fact a polynomial from Z[T], the reciprocal of the period polynomial.
We finish with explicit calculations of g_d(p) for the cases d = 3 and d = 4, all primes p, using the known cyclotomic numbers compiled by Dickson.
We describe mean value estimates for exponential sums of degree exceeding 2 that approach those conjectured to be best possible. The vehicle for this recent progress is the efficient congruencing method, which iteratively exploits the translation invariance of associated systems of Diophantine equations to derive powerful congruence constraints on the underlying variables. There are applications to Weyl sums, the distribution of polynomials modulo 1, and other Diophantine problems such as Waring's problem.
Let $τ(n)$ be the Ramanujan $τ$-function. We prove that for any integer $N$ the diophantine equation $$ \sum_{i=1}^{74000}τ(n_i)=N $$ has a solution in positive integers $n_1, n_2,..., n_{74000}$ satisfying the condition $$ \max_{1\le i\le 74000}n_i\ll |N|^{2/11}+1. $$ We also consider similar questions in the residue ring modulo a large prime $p.$
We investigate sums of mixed powers involving two squares and three biquadrates. In particular, subject to the truth of the Generalised Riemann Hypothesis and the Elliott-Halberstam Conjecture, we show that all large natural numbers n with 8 not dividing n, n not congruent to 2 modulo 3, and n not congruent to 14 modulo 16, are the sum of 2 squares and 3 biquadrates.
We study a variant of Waring's problem for $\mathbb{Z}_n$, the ring of integers modulo $n$: For a fixed integer $k \geq 2$, what is the minimum number $m$ of $k$th powers necessary such that $x \equiv x_1^k + \dots + x_m^k \pmod{n}$ has a solution for every $x \in \mathbb{Z}_n$? Using only elementary methods, we answer fully this question for exponents $k \leq 10$, and we further discuss some intermediary cases such as categorizing the values of $n$ such that every element in $\mathbb{Z}_n$ can be written as a sum of three squares. Hensel's Theorem for $p$-adic integers plays a key role. Final…
We obtain an asymptotic formula on the Odlyzko-Stanley enumeration problem. Let $N_m^*(k,b)$ be the number of $k$-subsets $S\subseteq F_p^*$ such that $\sum_{x\in S}x^m=b$. If $m<p^{1-δ}$, then there is a constant $ε=ε(δ)>0$ such that | N_m^*(k,b)-p^{-1}{p-1 \choose k}|\leq {p^{1-ε}+mk-m \choose k}. In addition, let $γ'(m,p)$ denote the distinct Waring's number $(\mod p)$, the smallest positive integer $k$ such that every integer is a sum of m-th powers of $k$-distinct elements $(\mod p)$. The above bound implies that there is a constant $ε(δ)>0$ such for any prime $p$ and any $m<p^{1-δ}$, if …
In this essay, we see how prime cyclotomic fields (cyclotomic fields obtained by adjoining a primitive p-th root of unity to Q, where p is an odd prime) can lead to elegant proofs of number theoretical concepts. We namely develop the notion of primary units in a cyclotomic field, demonstrate their equivalence to real units in this case, and show how this leads to a proof of a special case of Fermat's Last Theorem. We finally modernize Dirichlet's solution to Pell's Equation.
In this note, we investigate the p-adic behavior of Weil numbers in the cyclotomic $\mathbb Z\_p$-extension of $\mathbb Q(ζ\_p).$ We determlne the characteristic ideal of the quotient of semi-local units by Weil numbers in terms of the characteristic ideals of some classical modules that appear in Iwasawa Theory.
We deduce the cyclotomic Iwasawa main conjecture for Hilbert modular cuspforms with complex multiplication from the multivariable main conjecture for CM number fields. To this end, we study in detail the behaviour of the $p$-adic $L$-functions and the Selmer groups attached to CM number fields under specialisation procedures.
The problem of expressing an element of K_2(F) in a more explicit form gives rise to many works. To avoid a restrictive condition in a work of Tate, Browkin considered cyclotomic elements as the candidate for the element with an explicit form. In this paper, we modify and change Browkin's conjecture about cyclotomic elements into more precise forms, in particular we introduce the conception of cyclotomic subgroup. In the rational function field cases, we determine completely the exact numbers of cyclotomic elements and cyclotomic subgroups contained in a subgroup generated by finitely many dif…

Let $n\ge 3$ be a square-free natural number. We explicitly describe the inverses of the matrices $$ (2\sin(2πjk^*/n))_{j,k} \enspace \mbox{ and }\enspace (2\cos(2πjk^*/n))_{j,k}, $$ where $k^*$ denotes a multiplicative inverse of $k$ mod $n$ and $j,k$ run through the set $\{l; 1\le l\le n/2, (l,n)=1\}$. These results are based on the theory of Gauss sums.
When the branch character has root number -1, the corresponding anticyclotomic Katz p-adic L-function identically vanishes. In this case, we study the $μ$-invariant of the cyclotomic derivative of Katz p-adic L-function. As an application, this proves the non-vanishing of the anticyclotomic regulator of a self-dual CM modular form with the root number -1. The result also plays a crucial role in the recent work of Hsieh on the Eisenstein ideal approach to a one-sided divisibility of the CM main conjecture.
In this paper, we give an explicit expression for a certain family of ternary cyclotomic polynomials: specifically $Φ_{p_{1}p_{2}p_{3}}$, where $p_{1}<p_{2}<p_{3}$ are odd primes such that $p_{2} \equiv1 \mod p_{1}$ and $p_{3} \equiv1 \mod {p_{1}p_{2}}$. As an application of the explicit expressions, we give an exact formula for the number of nonzero terms in the polynomials in the family, which in turn immediately shows that the density (number of non-zeros terms / degree) is roughly inversely proportional to $p_{2}$, when $p_{1}$ is sufficiently large.
Surprisingly, the class numbers of cyclotomic fields have only been determined for fields of small conductor, e.g. for prime conductors up to 67, due to the problem of finding the "plus part," i.e. the class number of the maximal real subfield. Our results have improved the situation. We prove that the plus part of the class number is 1 for prime conductors between 71 and 151. Also, under the assumption of the generalized Riemann hypothesis, we determine the class number for prime conductors between 167 and 241. This technique generalizes to any totally real field of moderately large discrimin…
We say a tame Galois field extension $L/K$ with Galois group $G$ has trivial Galois module structure if the rings of integers have the property that $\Cal{O}_{L}$ is a free $\Cal{O}_{K}[G]$-module. The work of Greither, Replogle, Rubin, and Srivastav shows that for each algebraic number field other than the rational numbers there will exist infinitely many primes $l$ so that for each there is a tame Galois field extension of degree $l$ so that $L/K$ has nontrivial Galois module structure. However, the proof does not directly yield specific primes $l$ for a given algebraic number field $K.$ For…
Following the prequel work \cite{VO3}, we prove a generalization of "Mazur's conjecture" for $L$-functions of elliptic curves in abelian extensions of imaginary quadratic fields, including the assertion that the Mordell-Weil rank of an elliptic curve in the ${\bf{Z}}_p^2$-extension is finitely generated modulo Heegner points. The novelty of the approach here is to use the existence of a suitable $p$-adic $L$-function to reduce the problem to a minimal nonvanishing criterion, which should be applicable to a broader class of problems than considered here.
Let p be an odd prime. Let K = \Q(zeta) be the p-cyclotomic number field. Let v be a primitive root mod p and sigma : zeta --> zeta^v be a \Q-isomorphism of the extension K/\Q generating the Galois group G of K/\Q. For n in Z, the notation v^n is understood by v^n mod p with 1 \leq v^n \leq p-1. Let P(X) = \sum_{i=0}^{p-2} v^{-i}X^i \in \Z[X] be the Stickelberger polynomial. P(sigma) annihilates the class group C of K. There exists a polynomial Q(X) \in \Z[X] such that P(sigma)(sigma-v) = p\times Q(sigma) and such that Q(sigma) annihilates the p-class group C_p of K (the subgroup of exponent p…
Unit group computations are a cryptographic primitive for which one has a fast quantum algorithm, but the required number of qubits is $\tilde O(m^5)$. In this work we propose a modification of the algorithm for which the number of qubits is $\tilde O(m^2)$ in the case of cyclotomic fields. Moreover, under a recent conjecture on the size of the class group of $\mathbb{Q}(ζ_m + ζ_m^{-1})$, the quantum algorithms is much simpler because it is a hidden subgroup problem (HSP) algorithm rather than its error estimation counterpart: continuous hidden subgroup problem (CHSP). We also discuss the (min…
We investigate the complex spectra \[ X^{\mathcal A}(β)=\left\{\sum_{j=0}^na_jβ^j : n\in{\mathbb N},\ a_j\in{\mathcal A}\right\} \] where $β$ is a quadratic or cubic Pisot-cyclotomic number and the alphabet $\mathcal A$ is given by $0$ along with a finite collection of roots of unity. Such spectra are discrete aperiodic structures with crystallographically forbidden symmetries. We discuss in general terms under which conditions they possess the Delone property required for point sets modeling quasicrystals. We study the corresponding Voronoi tilings and we relate these structures to quasilatti…
Given a number field $K$ and a polynomial $f(z) \in K[z]$ of degree at least 2, one can construct a finite directed graph $G(f,K)$ whose vertices are the $K$-rational preperiodic points for $f$, with an edge $α\to β$ if and only if $f(α) = β$. Restricting to quadratic polynomials, the dynamical uniform boundedness conjecture of Morton and Silverman suggests that for a given number field $K$, there should only be finitely many isomorphism classes of directed graphs that arise in this way. Poonen has given a conjecturally complete classification of all such directed graphs over $\mathbb{Q}$, whi…
