Let p be an odd prime. Let K = \Q(zeta) be the p-cyclotomic number field. Let v be a primitive root mod p and sigma : zeta --> zeta^v be a \Q-isomorphism of the extension K/\Q generating the Galois group G of K/\Q. For n in Z, the notation v^n is understood by v^n mod p with 1 \leq v^n \leq p-1. Let P(X) = \sum_{i=0}^{p-2} v^{-i}X^i \in \Z[X] be the Stickelberger polynomial. P(sigma) annihilates the class group C of K. There exists a polynomial Q(X) \in \Z[X] such that P(sigma)(sigma-v) = p\times Q(sigma) and such that Q(sigma) annihilates the p-class group C_p of K (the subgroup of exponent p of C). In the other hand sigma^{(p-1)/2}+1 annihilates the relative class group of K. The simultaneous application of these results brings some informations on the structure of the class group C, give some explicit congruences in \Z[v] mod p for the p-class group C_p of K and some explicit congruences in \Z[v] mod h for the h-class group of K for all the prime divisors h \not = p of the class number h(K). We detail at the end the case of class number of quadratic and biquadratic fields contained in the cyclotomic field K and give a general MAPLE algorithm.
We get some results about the factorization of $ϕ_p(M) \in {\mathbb{F}}_2[x]$, where $p$ is a prime number, $ϕ_p$ is the corresponding cyclotomic polynomial and $M$ is a Mersenne prime (polynomial). By the way, we better understand the factorization of the sum of the divisors of $M^{2h}$, for a positive integer $h$.
In this paper, we introduce a Carlitz module analogue of Mersenne primes, and prove Carlitz module analogues of several classical results concerning Mersenne primes. In contrast to the classical case, we can show that there are infinitely many composite Mersenne numbers. We also study the acquaintances of Mersenne primes including Wieferich and non-Wieferich primes in the Carlitz module context that were first introduced by Dinesh Thakur.
We study the asymptotic growth of the p-primary component of the Shafarevich-Tate group in the cyclotomic direction at any odd prime of good supersingular reduction, generalizing work of Kobayashi. This explains formulas obtained by Kurihara, Perrin-Riou, and Nasybullin in terms of Iwasawa invariants of modified Selmer groups.
We present several approaches on finding necessary and sufficient conditions on $n$ so that $Φ_k(x^n)$ is irreducible where $Φ_k$ is the $k$-th cyclotomic polynomial.
A cyclotomic polynomial Φ_n(x) is said to be ternary if n=pqr with p,q and r distinct odd primes. Ternary cyclotomic polynomials are the simplest ones for which the behaviour of the coefficients is not completely understood. Here we establish some results and formulate some conjectures regarding the coefficients appearing in the polynomial family Φ_{pqr}(x) with p<q<r, p and q fixed and r a free prime.
We study the number of real critical points of a cyclotomic polynomial $Φ_{n}(x)$, that is, the real roots of $Φ_{n}^{\prime}(x)$. As usual, one can, without losing generality, restrict $n$ to be the product of distinct odd primes, say $p_{1}<\cdots<p_{k}$. We show that if the primes are "sufficiently separated" then there are exactly $2^{k}-1$ real roots of $Φ_{n}^{\prime}(x)$ and each of them is simple.
Cantor primes are primes p such that 1/p belongs to the middle-third Cantor set. One way to look at them is as containing the base-3 analogues of the famous Mersenne primes, which encompass all base-2 repunit primes, i.e., primes consisting of a contiguous sequence of 1's in base 2 and satisfying an equation of the form p + 1 = 2^q. The Cantor primes encompass all base-3 repunit primes satisfying an equation of the form 2p + 1 = 3^q, and I show that in general all Cantor primes > 3 satisfy a closely related equation of the form 2pK + 1 = 3^q, with the base-3 repunits being the special case K =…
Surprisingly, the class numbers of cyclotomic fields have only been determined for fields of small conductor, e.g. for prime conductors up to 67, due to the problem of finding the "plus part," i.e. the class number of the maximal real subfield. Our results have improved the situation. We prove that the plus part of the class number is 1 for prime conductors between 71 and 151. Also, under the assumption of the generalized Riemann hypothesis, we determine the class number for prime conductors between 167 and 241. This technique generalizes to any totally real field of moderately large discrimin…
For a fixed odd prime q we investigate the first and second order terms of the asymptotic series expansion for the number of n\le x such that q does not divide phi(n). Part of the analysis involves a careful study of the Euler-Kronecker constants for cyclotomic fields. In particular, we show that the prime k-tuples conjecture and a conjecture of Ihara about the distribution of these Euler-Kronecker constants cannot be both true.
The class numbers $h^{+}$ of the real cyclotomic fields are very hard to compute. Methods based on discriminant bounds become useless as the conductor of the field grows and methods employing Leopoldt's decomposition of the class number become hard to use when the field extension is not cyclic of prime power. This is why other methods have been developed which approach the problem from different angles. In this paper we extend one of these methods that was designed for real cyclotomic fields of prime conductor, and we make it applicable to real cyclotomic fields of conductor equal to the produ…
Given any positive integer $n,$ let $A(n)$ denote the height of the $n^{\text{th}}$ cyclotomic polynomial, that is its maximum coefficient in absolute value. It is well known that $A(n)$ is unbounded. We conjecture that every natural number can arise as value of $A(n)$ and prove this assuming that for every pair of consecutive primes $p$ and $p'$ with $p\ge 127$ we have $p'-p<\sqrt{p}+1.$ We also conjecture that every natural number occurs as maximum coefficient of some cyclotomic polynomial and show that this is true if Andrica's conjecture that always $\sqrt{p'}-\sqrt{p}<1$ holds. This is th…
In this essay, we see how prime cyclotomic fields (cyclotomic fields obtained by adjoining a primitive p-th root of unity to Q, where p is an odd prime) can lead to elegant proofs of number theoretical concepts. We namely develop the notion of primary units in a cyclotomic field, demonstrate their equivalence to real units in this case, and show how this leads to a proof of a special case of Fermat's Last Theorem. We finally modernize Dirichlet's solution to Pell's Equation.
We collect some statements regarding equivalence of the parities of various class numbers and signature ranks of units in prime power cyclotomic fields. We correct some misstatements in the literature regarding these parities by providing an example of a prime cyclotomic field where the signature rank of the units and the signature rank of the circular units are not equal.
Primitive prime divisors play an important role in group theory and number theory. We study a certain number theoretic quantity, called $Φ^*_n(q)$, which is closely related to the cyclotomic polynomial $Φ_n(x)$ and to primitive prime divisors of $q^n-1$. Our definition of $Φ^*_n(q)$ is novel, and we prove it is equivalent to the definition given by Hering. Given positive constants $c$ and $k$, we give an algorithm for determining all pairs $(n,q)$ with $Φ^*_n(q)\le cn^k$. This algorithm is used to extend (and correct) a result of Hering which is useful for classifying certain families of subgr…
The problem of determining cyclotomic numbers in terms of the solutions of certain Diophantine systems has been treated by many authors since the age of Gauss. In this paper we obtain an explicit expression for cyclotomic numbers of order 2l^2 in terms of the coefficients of the Jacobi sums of lower orders. At the end, we illustrate the nature of two matrices corresponding to two types of cyclotomic numbers.
For any prime p and any positive integer n, let B(p,n) denote the n-th layer of the cyclotomic Z_p-extension over the rationals. Based on the heuristics of Cohen and Lenstra, and refined by new results on class numbers of particular B(p,n), we provide evidence for the following conjecture: For all primes p and positive integers n, the ideal class group of B(p,n) is trivial.
This paper contributes to compute 2-adic complexity of two classes of Ding-Helleseth generalized cyclotomic sequences. Results show that 2-adic complexity of these sequences is good enough to resist the attack by the rational approximation algorithm.
In this paper we establish a connection between the Gauss factorials and Iwasawa's cyclotomic $λ$-invariant for an imaginary quadratic field $K$. As a result, we will explain a corespondance between the 1-exceptional primes of Cosgrave and Dilcher for $m = 3$ and $m = 4$, and the primes for which the $λ$-invariants for $K = \mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-3})$ and $K = \mathbb{Q}(i)$ is greater than one, respectively. We refer to the latter primes as ``non-trivial'' for their respective fields. We will also see that similar correspondences are true for $K = \mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-d})$ when $d = 2,5$ and $6$. As …
The notion of block divisibility naturally leads one to introduce unitary cyclotomic polynomials $Φ_n^*(x)$. They can be written as certain products of cyclotomic poynomials. We study the case where $n$ has two or three distinct prime factors using numerical semigroups, respectively Bachman's inclusion-exclusion polynomials. Given $m\ge 1$ we show that every integer occurs as a coefficient of $Φ^*_{mn}(x)$ for some $n\ge 1$. Here $n$ will typically have many different prime factors. We also consider similar questions for the polynomials $(x^n-1)/Φ_n^*(x),$ the inverse unitary cyclotomic polyno…
Let $φ_p(z)=(z-1)^p+2-ζ_p$, where $ζ_p\in\bar{\mathbb{Q}}$ is a primitive $p$-th root of unity for some odd prime $p$. Building on previous work, we show that the $n$-th iterate $φ_p^n(z)$ has Galois group $[C_p]^n$, an iterated wreath product of cyclic groups, whenever $p$ is not a Wieferich prime.
We study the equivalence between the Ring Learning With Errors and Polynomial Learning With Errors problems for cyclotomic number fields, namely: we prove that both problems are equivalent via a polynomial noise increase as long as the number of distinct primes dividing the conductor is kept constant. We refine our bound in the case where the conductor is divisible by at most three primes and we give an asymptotic subexponential formula for the condition number of the attached Vandermonde matrix valid for arbitrary degree.
This article deals with a study of the structure of the class group of the cyclotomic field $K=\Q(ζ_p)$ for $p$ an odd prime number, starting from Stickelberger relation. The present state of this work leads me to set a question for all the prime numbers $h\not=p$ which divide the relative class number $h^-(K)$.
Let $p$ be an irregular prime. Let $K=\Q(ζ)$ be the $p$-cyclotomic field. From Kummer and class field theory, there exist Galois extensions $S/\Q$ of degree $p(p-1)$ such that $S/K$ is a cyclic unramified extension of degree $[S:K]=p$. We give an algebraic construction of the subfields $M$ of $S$ with degree $[M:\Q]=p$ and an explicit formula for the prime decomposition and ramification of the prime number $p$ in the extensions $S/K$, $M/\Q$ and $S/M$. In the last section, we examine the consequences of these results for the Vandiver's conjecture. This article is at elementary level on Classic…
Let $ζ_q$ be a primitive $q^{\text{th}}$ root of unity with $q$ an arbitrary odd prime. The ratio of Kummer's first factor of the class number of the cyclotomic number field $\mathbb{Q}(ζ_q)$ and its expected order of magnitude (a simple function of $q$) is called the Kummer ratio and denoted by $r(q)$. It is known that typically $r(q)$ is close to 1, but nevertheless it is believed that it is unbounded, but only large on a very thin sequence of primes $q$. We propose an algorithm to compute $r(q)$ requiring the evaluation of $O(q\log q)$ products and $O(q)$ logarithms. Using it we obtain a ne…
Cyclotomic polynomials play fundamental roles in number theory, combinatorics, algebra and their applications. Hence their properties have been extensively investigated. In this paper, we study the maximum gap $g$ (maximum of the differences between any two consecutive exponents). In 2012, it was shown that $g\left( Φ_{p_{1}p_{2}}\right) =p_{1} -1$ for primes $p_{2}>p_{1}$. In 2017, based on numerous calculations, the following generalization was conjectured: $g\left( Φ_{mp}\right) =φ(m)$ for square free odd $m$ and prime $p>m$. The main contribution of this paper is a proof of this conjecture…
We describe Greenberg's pseudo-null conjecture, and prove a result describing conditions under which the pseudo-null conjecture for a number field $K$ implies the conjecture for finite extensions of $K$. We then apply the result to the cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-tower above a cyclotomic field of prime roots of unity, verifying the conjecture for a large class of cyclotomic fields.
Let p be an odd prime, and k_\infty the cyclotomic Z_p-extension of an abelian field k. For a finite set S of rational primes which does not include p, we will consider the maximal S-ramified abelian pro-p extension M_S(k_\infty) over k_\infty. We shall give a formula of the Z_p-rank of Gal(M_S(k_\infty)/k_\infty). In the proof of this formula, we also show that M_{q}(k_\infty)/L(k_\infty) is a finite extension for every real abelian field k and every rational prime q distinct from p, where L(k_\infty) is the maximal unramified abelian pro-p extension over k_\infty.
The problem to construct optimal conflict-avoiding codes of even lengths and the Hamming weight $3$ is completely settled. On the contrary, it is still open for odd lengths. It turns out that the prime lengths are the fundamental cases needed to be constructed. In the article, we study conflict-avoiding codes of prime lengths and give a connection with the so-called cyclotomic numbers. By having some nonzero cyclotomic numbers, a well-known algorithm for constructing optimal conflict-avoiding codes will work for certain prime lengths. As a consequence, we are able to answer the size of optimal…
A unitary cyclotomic polynomial of order three is a polynomial of the form \[ Φ^*_{PQR}(x)=\frac{(x^{PQR}-1)(x^P-1)(x^Q-1)(x^R-1)}{(x^{PQ}-1)(x^{QR}-1)(x^{RP}-1)(x-1)}, \] where $P$, $Q$ and $R$ are powers of three distinct primes $p$, $q$ and $r$. Fixing any such prime triple generates a family of these polynomials corresponding to all possible choices of $P=p^a$, $Q=q^b$ and $R=r^c$. We study the coefficients of polynomials in such a family. In particular, we show that the coefficients of polynomials in every such family cover all of $\mathbb{Z}$.
Let $F$ be a number field unramified at an odd prime $p$ and $F_\infty$ be the $\mathbf{Z}_p$-cyclotomic extension of $F$. Let $A$ be an abelian variety defined over $F$ with good supersingular reduction at all primes of $F$ above $p$. Büyükboduk and the first named author have defined modified Selmer groups associated to $A$ over $F_\infty$. Assuming that the Pontryagin dual of these Selmer groups are torsion $\mathbf{Z}_p[[\mathrm{Gal}(F_\infty/F)]]$-modules, we give an explicit sufficient condition for the rank of the Mordell-Weil group $A(F_n)$ to be bounded as $n$ varies.
This paper studies Galois extensions over real quadratic number fields or cyclotomic number fields ramified only at one prime. In both cases, the ray class groups are computed, and they give restrictions on the finite groups that can occur as such Galois groups. Also the explicit structure of ray class groups of regular cyclotomic number field is given.
Let $\K$ be a finite extension of a characteristic zero field $\F$. We say that the pair of $n\times n$ matrices $(A,B)$ over $\F$ represents $\K$ if $\K \cong \F[A]/< B >$ where $\F[A]$ denotes the smallest subalgebra of $M_n(\F)$ containing $A$ and $< B >$ is an ideal in $\F[A]$ generated by $B$. In particular, $A$ is said to represent the field $\K$ if there exists an irreducible polynomial $q(x)\in \F[x]$ which divides the minimal polynomial of $A$ and $\K \cong \F[A]/< q(A) >$. In this paper, we identify the smallest circulant-matrix representation for any subfield of a cyclotomic field. …
We propose and justify a generalised approach to prove the polynomial reduction of the RLWE to the PLWE problem attached to the ring of integers of a monogenic number field. We prove such equivalence in the case of the maximal totally real subextension of the 4p-th cyclotomic field, with p arbitrary prime.
For a fixed prime $p$, the maximum coefficient (in absolute value) $M(p)$ of the cyclotomic polynomial $Φ_{pqr}(x)$, where $r$ and $q$ are free primes satisfying $r>q>p$ exists. Sister Beiter conjectured in 1968 that $M(p)\le(p+1)/2$. In 2009 Gallot and Moree showed that $M(p)\ge 2p(1-ε)/3$ for every $p$ sufficiently large. In this article Kloosterman sums (`cloister man sums') and other tools from the distribution of modular inverses are applied to quantify the abundancy of counter-examples to Sister Beiter's conjecture and sharpen the above lower bound for $M(p)$.
Let $p$ be an irregular prime and $K=\Q(ζ)$ the $p$-cyclotomic field. Let $σ$ be a $\Q$-isomorphism of $K$ generating $Gal(K/\Q)$. Let $S/K$ be a cyclic unramified extension of degree $p$, defined by $S= K(A^{1/p})$ where $A\in K\backslash K^p$, $A\Z_K=\mk a^p$ with $\mk a$ non-principal ideal of $\Z_K$, $A^{σ-μ}\in K^p$ and $μ\in{\bf F}_p$. We compute explicitly the decomposition of the prime $p$ in the subfields $M$ of $S$ of degree $[M:\Q]=p$.
Let $k=2^mp^n$ for an odd prime $p$ and integers $m\ge 0$ and $n\ge 0$. We obtain lower bounds for the $ρ$-values of cyclotomic families of pairing-friendly elliptic curves with embedding degree $k$ and $r(x)=Φ_k(x)$. Our bounds imply that none of these families are ideal.
We investigate the interrelationships of three notions of primary units in the local cyclotomic field of $p$-th roots of~1($p$ being an odd prime number), especially with reference to global units.
We prove the rank of the group of signatures of the circular units (hence also the full group of units) of ${\mathbb Q}( ζ_m)^+$ tends to infinity with $m$. We also show the signature rank of the units differs from its maximum possible value by a bounded amount for all the real subfields of the composite of an abelian field with finitely many odd prime-power cyclotomic towers. In particular, for any prime $p$ the signature rank of the units of ${\mathbb Q}( ζ_{p^n})^+$ differs from $φ(p^n)/2$ by an amount that is bounded independent of $n$. Finally, we show conditionally that for general cyclo…
Let $K_{m}=\Bbb{Q}(ζ_{m})$ where $ζ_{m}$ is a primitive $m$th root of unity. Let $p>2$ be prime and let $C_{p}$ denote the group of order $p.$ The ring of algebraic integers of $K_{m}$ is $\Cal{O}_{m}=\Bbb{Z}[ζ_{m}].$ Let $Λ_{m,p}$ denote the order $\Cal{O}_{m}[C_{p}]$ in the algebra $K_{m}[C_{p}].$ Consider the kernel group $D(Λ_{m,p})$ and the Swan subgroup $T(Λ_{m,p}).$ If $(p,m)=1$ these two subgroups of the class group coincide. Restricting to when there is a rational prime $p$ that is prime in $\Cal{O}_{m}$ requires $m=4$ or $q^{n}$ where $q>2$ is prime. For each such $m$, $3 \leq m \leq…
We investigate the solvability of the Diophantine equation $x^2-my^2=\pm p$ in integers for certain integer $m$ and prime $p$. Then we apply these results to produce family of maximal real subfield of a cyclotomic field whose class number is strictly bigger than $1$.
We say a tame Galois field extension $L/K$ with Galois group $G$ has trivial Galois module structure if the rings of integers have the property that $\Cal{O}_{L}$ is a free $\Cal{O}_{K}[G]$-module. The work of Greither, Replogle, Rubin, and Srivastav shows that for each algebraic number field other than the rational numbers there will exist infinitely many primes $l$ so that for each there is a tame Galois field extension of degree $l$ so that $L/K$ has nontrivial Galois module structure. However, the proof does not directly yield specific primes $l$ for a given algebraic number field $K.$ For…
Let $k_\infty$ be the cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension of an algebraic number field $k$. We denote by $S$ a finite set of prime numbers which does not contain $p$, and $S(k_\infty)$ the set of primes of $k_\infty$ lying above $S$. In the present paper, we will study the structure of the Galois group $\mathcal{X}_S (k_\infty)$ of the maximal pro-$p$ extension unramified outside $S (k_\infty)$ over $k_\infty$. We mainly consider the question whether $\mathcal{X}_S (k_\infty)$ is a non-abelian free pro-$p$ group or not. In the former part, we treat the case when $k$ is an imaginary quadratic f…
Let $H= \mathbb{Q}(ζ_{n} + {ζ_{n}}^{-1})$ and $\ell$ be an odd prime such that $q \equiv 1 \pmod \ell$ for some prime factor $q$ of $n$. We get a bound on the $\ell$-rank of the class group of $H$(under some conditions) in terms of the $\ell$-rank of the class group of real quadratic subfield contained in $H$. This is an extension of a recent work of E. Agathocleous (with alternate hypothesis) where she handles $\ell=3$ case. As an application of our main result we relate the $\ell$-rank of real quadratic subfields of $H$.
Let p and r be two primes and n, m be two distinct divisors of pr. Consider the n-th and m-th cyclotomic polynomials. In this paper, we present lower and upper bounds for the coefficients of the inverse of one of them modulo the other one. We mention an application to torus-based cryptography.
Let a(n,k) be the kth coefficient of the nth cyclotomic polynomial. The first two authors showed in part I that if m is a prime power and n and k range over the non-negative integers, then a(mn,k) assumes every integer value. Here this result is extended to the case where m is arbitrary. The proof use some properties of reciprocal cyclotomic polynomials (see arXiv:0709.1570).
For a real abelian field and for an odd prime p splitting in the field, we study a map between the p-parts of the class group and of the quotient of units modulo Cyclotomic Units, respectively, along the cyclotomic Z_p-extension of the field. We determine the kernel and the cokernel of this map assuming Greenberg's conjecture on the vanishing of the lambda-invariant of the extension.
We introduce a new algorithm, which is faster and requires less computing resources than the ones previously known, to compute the Euler-Kronecker constants $\mathfrak{G}_q$ for the prime cyclotomic fields $\mathbb{Q}(ζ_q)$, where $q$ is an odd prime and $ζ_q$ is a primitive $q$-root of unity. With such a new algorithm we evaluated $\mathfrak{G}_q$ and $\mathfrak{G}_q^+$, where $\mathfrak{G}_q^+$ is the Euler-Kronecker constant of the maximal real subfield of $\mathbb{Q}(ζ_q)$, for some very large primes $q$ thus obtaining two new negative values of $\mathfrak{G}_q$: $\mathfrak{G}_{9109334831}…
For a real quadratic field $K= \mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d})$ with discriminant $D_{K}$ having four distinct prime factors, we study the structure of the $2$-class group $A(K_{1})$ of the first layer $K_{1} = \mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{2},\sqrt{d})$ of the cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$-extension of $K$. With some suitably convenient assumptions on the rank and the order of $A(K_{1})$, we characterize $K$ for which the $2$-class group $A(K)$ is isomorphic to $\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z} \oplus \mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}$. We infer that the $2$-ranks of the class groups in each layer stabilizes by virtue of a result of Fukud…
We use a result of Thaine to give an alternative proof of the fact that, for a prime p>3 congruent to 3 modulo 4, the component e_{(p+1)/2} of the p-Sylow subgroup of the ideal class group of \mathbb Q(ζ_{p}) is trivial.
Let p > 2 be a prime. Let Q(zeta) be the p-cyclotomic field. Let pi be the prime ideal of Q(zeta) lying over p. This article aims to describe some pi-adic congruences characterizing the structure of the p-class group and of the unit group of the field Q(zeta). For the unit group, this article supplements the 1954 and 1956 papers of Denes on this topic. A complete summarizing of the results obtained follows in the Introduction section of the paper (pages 3 to 6). This new version of the article with the same title, submitted with reference math.NT/0407430 25 Jul 2004: - corrects several typing …
