Let $ζ_q$ be a primitive $q^{\text{th}}$ root of unity with $q$ an arbitrary odd prime. The ratio of Kummer's first factor of the class number of the cyclotomic number field $\mathbb{Q}(ζ_q)$ and its expected order of magnitude (a simple function of $q$) is called the Kummer ratio and denoted by $r(q)$. It is known that typically $r(q)$ is close to 1, but nevertheless it is believed that it is unbounded, but only large on a very thin sequence of primes $q$. We propose an algorithm to compute $r(q)$ requiring the evaluation of $O(q\log q)$ products and $O(q)$ logarithms. Using it we obtain a new record maximum for $r(q)$, namely $r(6766811) =1.709379\dotsc$ (the old record being $r(5231)=1.556562\dotsc$). The program used and the results described here, are collected at the following address \url{http://www.math.unipd.it/~languasc/rq-comput.html}.
This is a (preliminary) report about the computational part of a joint project with Pieter Moree, Sumaia Saad Eddin, and Alisa Sedunova.
In this paper, we obtain a formula for the special value of Euler-Dirichlet $L$-function $L_E(s,χ)$ at $s=1$. This leads to another class number formula of $\mathbb{Q}(μ_{m})^{+}$, the maximal real subfield of $m$th cyclotomic field. From this formula, we construct a new type of cyclotomic units in $\mathbb{Q}(μ_{p^{n}})$, which implies a similar Kummer's relation between the ideal class number of $\mathbb{Q}(μ_{p^{n}})^{+}$ and the unit index.
Kummer's Conjecture predicts the rate of growth of the relative class numbers of cyclotomic fields of prime conductor. We extend Kummer's Conjecture to cyclotomic fields of conductor n, where n is any natural number. We show that the Elliott-Halberstam Conjecture implies that this Generalised Kummer's Conjecture is true for almost all n but is false for infinitely many n.
Kummer's conjecture states that the relative class number of the $p$-th cyclotomic field follows a strict asymptotic law. Granville has shown it unlikely to be true -- it cannot be true if we assume the truth of two other widely believed conjectures. We establish a new bound for the error term in Kummer's conjecture, and more precisely we prove that $\log(h_p^-)=\frac{p+3}{4}\log(p) + \frac{p}{2}\log(2π)+\log(1-β)+O(\log_2 p)$, where $β$ is a possible Siegel zero of an $L(s,χ)$, $χ$ odd.
In this (mostly historical) note we show how a unified Kummer-Artin-Schreier sequence from [W], [SOS] may be recovered from the relativistic velocity addition law.
In this paper we announce some results obtained for certain algebraic functions, which we call of cyclotomic type. The main results properly resemble von Staudt-Clausen's theorem and Kummer's congruence for the Bernoulli numbers, and such theorems for the Hurwitz numbers.
We call a (q-1)-th Kummer extension of a cyclotomic function field a quasi-cyclotomic function field if it is Galois, but non-abelian, over the rational function field with the constant field of q elements. In this paper, we determine the structure of the Galois groups of a kind of quasi-cyclotomic function fields over the base field. We also give the genus formulae of them.
Kummer (1851) and, many years later, Ihara (2005) both posed conjectures on invariants related to the cyclotomic field $\mathbb Q(ζ_q)$ with $q$ a prime. Kummer's conjecture concerns the asymptotic behaviour of the first factor of the class number of $\mathbb Q(ζ_q)$ and Ihara's the positivity of the Euler-Kronecker constant of $\mathbb Q(ζ_q)$ (the ratio of the constant and the residue of the Laurent series of the Dedekind zeta function $ζ_{\mathbb Q(ζ_q)}(s)$ at $s=1$). If certain standard conjectures in analytic number theory hold true, then one can show that both conjectures are true for a…
We give a construction of the genus field for Kummer $\ell^n$-cyclic extensions of rational congruence function fields, where $\ell$ is a prime number. First, we compute the genus field of a field contained in a cyclotomic function field, and then for the general case. This generalizes the result obtained by Peng for a Kummer $\ell$-cyclic extension. Finally, we study the extension $(K_1K_2)_{\frak{ge}}/(K_1)_{\frak{ge}}(K_2)_{\frak{ge}}$, for $K_1$, $K_2$ abelian extensions of $k$.
Hurwitz numbers are the Laurent coefficients of an elliptic function $\wp(u)$ of cyclotomic type, and they are natural generalization of the Bernoulli numbers. This paper gives new generalization of Bernoulli and Hurwitz numbers for higher genus cases. They satisfy completely von Staudt-Clausen type theorem, an extension of von Staudt second theorem, and Kummer type congruence relation. The present paper is revised and combined version of math.NT/0304377 and math.NT/0312178 containing many numerical examples.
We get some results about the factorization of $ϕ_p(M) \in {\mathbb{F}}_2[x]$, where $p$ is a prime number, $ϕ_p$ is the corresponding cyclotomic polynomial and $M$ is a Mersenne prime (polynomial). By the way, we better understand the factorization of the sum of the divisors of $M^{2h}$, for a positive integer $h$.
In this paper, we introduce a Carlitz module analogue of Mersenne primes, and prove Carlitz module analogues of several classical results concerning Mersenne primes. In contrast to the classical case, we can show that there are infinitely many composite Mersenne numbers. We also study the acquaintances of Mersenne primes including Wieferich and non-Wieferich primes in the Carlitz module context that were first introduced by Dinesh Thakur.
Let p be an odd prime. Let F_p^* be the no-null part of the finite field of p elements. Let K=\Q(zeta) be a p-cyclotomic field and O_K be its ring of integers. Let pi be the prime ideal of K lying over p. Let sigma : zeta --> zeta^v be the Q-isomorphism of K for a primitive root v mod p. The subgroup of exponent p of the class group of K can be seen as a direct sum oplus_{i=1}^r Gamma_i of groups of order p where the group Gamma_i is annihilated by a polynomial sigma-mu_i with mu_i \in F_p^*. Let Gamma be one of the Gamma_i. From Kummer, there exist prime non-principal prime ideals Q of inerti…
We study the asymptotic growth of the p-primary component of the Shafarevich-Tate group in the cyclotomic direction at any odd prime of good supersingular reduction, generalizing work of Kobayashi. This explains formulas obtained by Kurihara, Perrin-Riou, and Nasybullin in terms of Iwasawa invariants of modified Selmer groups.
We present several approaches on finding necessary and sufficient conditions on $n$ so that $Φ_k(x^n)$ is irreducible where $Φ_k$ is the $k$-th cyclotomic polynomial.
Let $k \,=\, \mathbb{Q}(\sqrt[5]{n},ζ_5)$, where $n$ is a positive integer, $5^{th}$ power-free, whose $5-$class group is isomorphic to $\mathbb{Z}/5\mathbb{Z}\times\mathbb{Z}/5\mathbb{Z}$. Let $k_0\,=\,\mathbb{Q}(ζ_5)$ be the cyclotomic field containing a primitive $5^{th}$ root of unity $ζ_5$. Let $C_{k,5}^{(σ)}$ the group of the ambiguous classes under the action of $Gal(k/k_0)$ = $<σ>$. The aim of this paper is to determine all integers $n$ such that the group of ambiguous classes $C_{k,5}^{(σ)}$ has rank $1$ or $2$.
A cyclotomic polynomial Φ_n(x) is said to be ternary if n=pqr with p,q and r distinct odd primes. Ternary cyclotomic polynomials are the simplest ones for which the behaviour of the coefficients is not completely understood. Here we establish some results and formulate some conjectures regarding the coefficients appearing in the polynomial family Φ_{pqr}(x) with p<q<r, p and q fixed and r a free prime.
In this paper we obtain the genus field of a general Kummer extension of a global rational function field. We study first the case of a general Kummer extension of degree a power of a prime. Then we prove that the genus field of a composite of two abelian extensions of a global rational function field with relatively prime degrees is equal to the composite of their respective genus fields. Our main result, the genus of a general Kummer extension of a global rational function field, is a direct consequence of this fact.
Let $F_0=\mathbf Q(\sqrt{-d})$ be an imaginary quadratic field with $3\nmid d$ and let $K_0=\mathbf Q(\sqrt{3d})$. Let $\varepsilon_0$ be the fundamental unit of $K_0$ and let $λ$ be the Iwasawa $λ$-invariant for the cyclotomic $\mathbf Z_3$-extension of $F_0$. The theory of 3-adic $L$-functions gives conditions for $λ\ge 2$ in terms of $ε_0$ and the class numbers of $F_0$ and $K_0$. We construct units of $K_1$, the first level of the $\mathbf Z_3$-extension of $K_0$, that potentially occur as Kummer generators of unramified extensions of $F_1(ζ_3)$ and which give an algebraic interpretation o…
We study the number of real critical points of a cyclotomic polynomial $Φ_{n}(x)$, that is, the real roots of $Φ_{n}^{\prime}(x)$. As usual, one can, without losing generality, restrict $n$ to be the product of distinct odd primes, say $p_{1}<\cdots<p_{k}$. We show that if the primes are "sufficiently separated" then there are exactly $2^{k}-1$ real roots of $Φ_{n}^{\prime}(x)$ and each of them is simple.
Cantor primes are primes p such that 1/p belongs to the middle-third Cantor set. One way to look at them is as containing the base-3 analogues of the famous Mersenne primes, which encompass all base-2 repunit primes, i.e., primes consisting of a contiguous sequence of 1's in base 2 and satisfying an equation of the form p + 1 = 2^q. The Cantor primes encompass all base-3 repunit primes satisfying an equation of the form 2p + 1 = 3^q, and I show that in general all Cantor primes > 3 satisfy a closely related equation of the form 2pK + 1 = 3^q, with the base-3 repunits being the special case K =…
We introduce a notion of highly Kummer-faithful fields and study its relationship with the notion of Kummer-faithful fields. We also give some examples of highly Kummer-faithful fields. For example, if $k$ is a number field of finite degree over $\mathbb{Q}$, $g$ is an integer $>0$ and $\mathbf{m}=(m_p)_p$ is a family of non-negative integers, where $p$ ranges over all prime numbers, then the extension field $k_{g,\mathbf{m}}$ obtained by adjoining to $k$ all coordinates of the elements of the $p^{m_p}$-torsion subgroup $A[p^{m_p}]$ of $A$ for all semi-abelian varieties $A$ over $k$ of dimensi…
Surprisingly, the class numbers of cyclotomic fields have only been determined for fields of small conductor, e.g. for prime conductors up to 67, due to the problem of finding the "plus part," i.e. the class number of the maximal real subfield. Our results have improved the situation. We prove that the plus part of the class number is 1 for prime conductors between 71 and 151. Also, under the assumption of the generalized Riemann hypothesis, we determine the class number for prime conductors between 167 and 241. This technique generalizes to any totally real field of moderately large discrimin…
Let $p$ be an irregular prime. Let $K=\Q(ζ)$ be the $p$-cyclotomic field. From Kummer and class field theory, there exist Galois extensions $S/\Q$ of degree $p(p-1)$ such that $S/K$ is a cyclic unramified extension of degree $[S:K]=p$. We give an algebraic construction of the subfields $M$ of $S$ with degree $[M:\Q]=p$ and an explicit formula for the prime decomposition and ramification of the prime number $p$ in the extensions $S/K$, $M/\Q$ and $S/M$. In the last section, we examine the consequences of these results for the Vandiver's conjecture. This article is at elementary level on Classic…
Let ϕ be a Drinfeld A-module of characteristic p0 over a finitely generated field K. Previous articles determined the image of the absolute Galois group of K up to commensurability in its action on all prime-to-p0 torsion points of ϕ, or equivalently, on the prime-to-p0 adelic Tate module of ϕ. In this article we consider in addition a finitely generated torsion free A-submodule M of K for the action of A through ϕ. We determine the image of the absolute Galois group of K up to commensurability in its action on the prime-to-p0 division hull of M, or equivalently, on the extended prime-to-p0 ad…
For a fixed odd prime q we investigate the first and second order terms of the asymptotic series expansion for the number of n\le x such that q does not divide phi(n). Part of the analysis involves a careful study of the Euler-Kronecker constants for cyclotomic fields. In particular, we show that the prime k-tuples conjecture and a conjecture of Ihara about the distribution of these Euler-Kronecker constants cannot be both true.
We study Kummer's approach towards proving the Fermat's last Theorem for regular primes. Some basic algebraic prerequisites are also discussed in this report, and also a brief history of the problem is mentioned. We review among other things the Class number formula, and use this formula to conclude our study.
Let p be an odd prime. Let K_p = \Q(zeta_p) be the p-cyclotomic field. We apply a Kummer and Stickelberger relation of K_p to some singular not primary numbers A of K_p connected to p-class group of K_p and prove they verify the congruence A = 1 mod p^2. Let v be a primitive root mod p. This p-adic improvement on singular numbers A allows us to connect in a straightforward way the p-class group C_p to the solutions of some explicit congruence mod p: \sum_{i=1}^{p-2} X^{i-1} \times (\frac{v^{-(i-1)}-v^{-i}\times v}{p}) \equiv 0 mod p: where X is a natural integer and where v^n is understood as …
The class numbers $h^{+}$ of the real cyclotomic fields are very hard to compute. Methods based on discriminant bounds become useless as the conductor of the field grows and methods employing Leopoldt's decomposition of the class number become hard to use when the field extension is not cyclic of prime power. This is why other methods have been developed which approach the problem from different angles. In this paper we extend one of these methods that was designed for real cyclotomic fields of prime conductor, and we make it applicable to real cyclotomic fields of conductor equal to the produ…
Let $p$ be a prime. In this paper, we present a detailed $p$-adic analysis to factorials and double factorials and their congruences. We give good bounds for the $p$-adic sizes of the coefficients of the divided universal Bernoulli number ${{\hat B_n}\over n}$ when $n$ is divisible by $p-1$. Using these we then establish the universal Kummer congruences modulo powers of a prime $p$ for the divided universal Bernoulli numbers ${{\hat B_n}\over n}$ when $n$ is divisible by $p-1$.
In this paper we give Kummer's original type congruence relation modulo a prime power for the universal Bernoulli numbers. Although the index of the power is half of original congruence, this estimate is best possible.
Given any positive integer $n,$ let $A(n)$ denote the height of the $n^{\text{th}}$ cyclotomic polynomial, that is its maximum coefficient in absolute value. It is well known that $A(n)$ is unbounded. We conjecture that every natural number can arise as value of $A(n)$ and prove this assuming that for every pair of consecutive primes $p$ and $p'$ with $p\ge 127$ we have $p'-p<\sqrt{p}+1.$ We also conjecture that every natural number occurs as maximum coefficient of some cyclotomic polynomial and show that this is true if Andrica's conjecture that always $\sqrt{p'}-\sqrt{p}<1$ holds. This is th…
The p-adic Kummer--Leopoldt constant kappa\_K of a number field K is (assuming the Leopoldt conjecture) the least integer c such that for all n \textgreater{}\textgreater{} 0, any global unit of K, which is locally a p^(n+c)th power at the p-places, is necessarily the p^nth power of a global unit of K. This constant has been computed by Assim \& Nguyen Quang Do using Iwasawa's techniques, after intricate studies and calculations by many authors. We give an elementary p-adic proof and an improvement of these results, then a class field theory interpretation of kappa\_K. We give some applications…
For a cyclic Kummer extension $K$ of a rational function field $k$ is considered, via class field theory, the extended Hilbert class field $K_H^+$ of $K$ and the corresponding extended genus field $K_g^+$ of $K$ over $k$, along the lines of the definitions of R. Clement for such extensions of prime degree. We obtain $K_g^+$ explicitly. Also, we use cohomology to determine the number of ambiguous classes and obtain a reciprocity law for $K/k$. Finally, we present a necessary and sufficient condition for a prime of $K$ to decompose fully in $K_g^+$.
In this essay, we see how prime cyclotomic fields (cyclotomic fields obtained by adjoining a primitive p-th root of unity to Q, where p is an odd prime) can lead to elegant proofs of number theoretical concepts. We namely develop the notion of primary units in a cyclotomic field, demonstrate their equivalence to real units in this case, and show how this leads to a proof of a special case of Fermat's Last Theorem. We finally modernize Dirichlet's solution to Pell's Equation.
We collect some statements regarding equivalence of the parities of various class numbers and signature ranks of units in prime power cyclotomic fields. We correct some misstatements in the literature regarding these parities by providing an example of a prime cyclotomic field where the signature rank of the units and the signature rank of the circular units are not equal.
Primitive prime divisors play an important role in group theory and number theory. We study a certain number theoretic quantity, called $Φ^*_n(q)$, which is closely related to the cyclotomic polynomial $Φ_n(x)$ and to primitive prime divisors of $q^n-1$. Our definition of $Φ^*_n(q)$ is novel, and we prove it is equivalent to the definition given by Hering. Given positive constants $c$ and $k$, we give an algorithm for determining all pairs $(n,q)$ with $Φ^*_n(q)\le cn^k$. This algorithm is used to extend (and correct) a result of Hering which is useful for classifying certain families of subgr…
The problem of determining cyclotomic numbers in terms of the solutions of certain Diophantine systems has been treated by many authors since the age of Gauss. In this paper we obtain an explicit expression for cyclotomic numbers of order 2l^2 in terms of the coefficients of the Jacobi sums of lower orders. At the end, we illustrate the nature of two matrices corresponding to two types of cyclotomic numbers.
For any prime p and any positive integer n, let B(p,n) denote the n-th layer of the cyclotomic Z_p-extension over the rationals. Based on the heuristics of Cohen and Lenstra, and refined by new results on class numbers of particular B(p,n), we provide evidence for the following conjecture: For all primes p and positive integers n, the ideal class group of B(p,n) is trivial.
In this paper we establish a connection between the Gauss factorials and Iwasawa's cyclotomic $λ$-invariant for an imaginary quadratic field $K$. As a result, we will explain a corespondance between the 1-exceptional primes of Cosgrave and Dilcher for $m = 3$ and $m = 4$, and the primes for which the $λ$-invariants for $K = \mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-3})$ and $K = \mathbb{Q}(i)$ is greater than one, respectively. We refer to the latter primes as ``non-trivial'' for their respective fields. We will also see that similar correspondences are true for $K = \mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-d})$ when $d = 2,5$ and $6$. As …
The notion of block divisibility naturally leads one to introduce unitary cyclotomic polynomials $Φ_n^*(x)$. They can be written as certain products of cyclotomic poynomials. We study the case where $n$ has two or three distinct prime factors using numerical semigroups, respectively Bachman's inclusion-exclusion polynomials. Given $m\ge 1$ we show that every integer occurs as a coefficient of $Φ^*_{mn}(x)$ for some $n\ge 1$. Here $n$ will typically have many different prime factors. We also consider similar questions for the polynomials $(x^n-1)/Φ_n^*(x),$ the inverse unitary cyclotomic polyno…
Let $φ_p(z)=(z-1)^p+2-ζ_p$, where $ζ_p\in\bar{\mathbb{Q}}$ is a primitive $p$-th root of unity for some odd prime $p$. Building on previous work, we show that the $n$-th iterate $φ_p^n(z)$ has Galois group $[C_p]^n$, an iterated wreath product of cyclic groups, whenever $p$ is not a Wieferich prime.
We study the equivalence between the Ring Learning With Errors and Polynomial Learning With Errors problems for cyclotomic number fields, namely: we prove that both problems are equivalent via a polynomial noise increase as long as the number of distinct primes dividing the conductor is kept constant. We refine our bound in the case where the conductor is divisible by at most three primes and we give an asymptotic subexponential formula for the condition number of the attached Vandermonde matrix valid for arbitrary degree.
This article deals with a study of the structure of the class group of the cyclotomic field $K=\Q(ζ_p)$ for $p$ an odd prime number, starting from Stickelberger relation. The present state of this work leads me to set a question for all the prime numbers $h\not=p$ which divide the relative class number $h^-(K)$.
We consider certain Massey products in the cohomology of a Galois extension of fields with coefficients in p-power roots of unity. We prove formulas for these products both in general and in the special case that the Galois extension in question is the maximal extension of a number field unramified outside a set of primes S including those above p and any archimedean places. We then consider those Z_p-Kummer extensions L of the maximal p-cyclotomic extension K of a number field that are unramified outside S. We show that Massey products describe the structure of a certain "decomposition-free" …
This paper contributes to compute 2-adic complexity of two classes of Ding-Helleseth generalized cyclotomic sequences. Results show that 2-adic complexity of these sequences is good enough to resist the attack by the rational approximation algorithm.
In this paper we first obtain the genus field of a finite abelian non-Kummer $l$--extension of a global rational function field. Then, using that the genus field of a composite of two abelian extensions of a global rational function field with relatively prime degrees is equal to the composite of their respective genus fields and our previous results, we deduce the general expression of the genus field of a finite abelian extension of a global rational function field.
Cyclotomic polynomials play fundamental roles in number theory, combinatorics, algebra and their applications. Hence their properties have been extensively investigated. In this paper, we study the maximum gap $g$ (maximum of the differences between any two consecutive exponents). In 2012, it was shown that $g\left( Φ_{p_{1}p_{2}}\right) =p_{1} -1$ for primes $p_{2}>p_{1}$. In 2017, based on numerous calculations, the following generalization was conjectured: $g\left( Φ_{mp}\right) =φ(m)$ for square free odd $m$ and prime $p>m$. The main contribution of this paper is a proof of this conjecture…
