In this paper, we will determine the topological types of hyperbolic 3-anifolds H^3/G such that G is a geometric limit of any algebraically convergent sequence of quasi-Fuchsian groups.
Measured foliations at infinity of quasi-Fuchsian manifolds are a natural analog at infinity to the measured bending laminations on the boundary of its convex core. We show that given a pair of arational measured foliations $(\mathsf{F}_{+},\mathsf{F}_{-})$ which fill a closed hyperbolic surface $S$, for $t>0$ sufficiently small, $t\mathsf{F}_{+}$ and $t\mathsf{F}_{-}$ can be uniquely realised as the measured foliations at infinity of a quasi-Fuchsian manifold homeomorphic to $S\times \mathbb{R}$, which is sufficiently close to the Fuchsian locus. Here arationality means that the corresponding…
We show that every hyperbolic link complement contains closed quasi-Fuchsian surfaces. As a consequence, we obtain the result that on a hyperbolic link complement, if we remove from each cusp of the manifold a certain finite set of slopes, then all remaining Dehn fillings on the link complement yield manifolds with closed immersed incompressible surfaces.
In this paper, we study the topology of the boundaries of quasi-Fuchsian spaces. We first show for a given convergent sequence of quasi-Fuchsian groups, how we can know the end invariant of the limit group from the information on the behaviour of conformal structures at infinity of the groups. This result gives rise to a sufficient condition for divergence of quasi-Fuchsian groups, which generalises Ito's result in the once-punctured torus case to higher genera. We further show that quasi-Fuchsian groups can approach a b-group not along Bers slices only when the limit has isolated parabolic lo…
We compare two families of left-invariant metrics on a surface group $Γ=π_1(Σ)$ in the context of course-geometry. One family comes from Riemannian metrics of negative curvature on the the surface $Σ$, and another from quasi-Fuchsian representations of $Γ$. We show that the Teichmuller space $\Teich(Σ)$ is the only common part of these two families, even when viewed from the coarse-geometric perspective.
We consider complex Fenchel-Nielsen coordinates on the quasi-Fuchsian space of punctured tori. These coordinates arise from a generalisation of Kra's plumbing construction and are related to earthquakes on Teichmueller space. They also allow us to interpolate between two coordinate systems on Teichmueller space, namely the classical Fuchsian space with Fenchel-Nielsen coordinates and the Maskit embedding. We also show how they relate to the pleating coordinates of Keen and Series.
The linear slice of quasi-Fuchsian once-punctured torus groups is defined by fixing the complex length of some simple closed curve to be a fixed positive real number. It is known that the linear slice is a union of disks, and it always has one standard component containing Fuchsian groups. Komori and Yamashita proved that there exist non-standard components if the length is sufficiently large. We give two other proofs of their theorem, one is based on some properties of length functions, and the other is based on the theory of complex projective structures and complex earthquakes. From the lat…
Given a pants decomposition $\mathcal{PC} = \{γ_1, \ldots, γ_ξ\}$ on a hyperbolizable surface $Σ$ and a vector $\underline{c} = (c_1, \ldots, c_ξ) \in \mathbb{R}_+^ξ$, we describe a plumbing construction which endows $Σ$ with a complex projective structure for which the associated holonomy representation $ρ$ is quasi-Fuchsian and for which $\ell_ρ(γ_i) = c_i$. When $\underline{c} \to \underline{0} = (0, \ldots, 0)$ this construction limits to Kra's plumbing construction. In addition, when $Σ= Σ_{1,1}$, the holonomy representations of these structures belong to the `linear slice' of quasi-Fuchs…
In this paper, we prove that if a quasi-Fuchsian 3-manifold $M$ contains a simple closed geodesic with complex length $\Lscr=l+iθ$ such that $θ/l\gg{}1$, then it contains at least two minimal surfaces which are incompressible in $M$.
In this paper, we prove that if a quasi-Fuchsian 3-manifold contains a minimal surface whose principle curvature is less than 1, then it admits a foliation such that each leaf is a surface of constant mean curvature. The key method that we use here is volume preserving mean curvature flow.
We study the topology and geometry of compact complex manifolds associated to Anosov representations of surface groups and other hyperbolic groups in a complex semisimple Lie group $G$. These manifolds are obtained as quotients of the domains of discontinuity in generalized flag varieties $G/P$ constructed by Kapovich-Leeb-Porti (arXiv:1306.3837), and in some cases by Guichard-Wienhard (arXiv:1108.0733). For $G$-Fuchsian representations and their Anosov deformations, where $G$ is simple, we compute the homology of the domains of discontinuity and of the quotient manifolds. For $G$-Fuchsian and…
We show that the simultaneous (de)grafting of a complex projective structure with quasi-Fuchsian holonomy along a multicurve can be performed by a simple sequence of one bubbling and one debubbling. As a consequence we obtain that any complex projective structure with quasi-Fuchsian holonomy $ρ:π_1(S)\to$ PSL$_2\mathbb{C}$ can be joined to the corresponding uniformizing structure $σ_ρ$ by a simple sequence of one bubbling and one debubbling, with a stopover in the space of branched complex projective structures.
For a given quasi-Fuchsian representation $ρ:π_1(S)\to$ PSL$_2\mathbb{C}$ of the fundamental group of a closed surface $S$ of genus $g\geq 2$, we prove that a generic branched complex projective structure on $S$ with holonomy $ρ$ and two branch points is obtained by bubbling some unbranched structure on $S$ with the same holonomy.
The paper contains a new proof that a complete, non-compact hyperbolic $3$-manifold $M$ with finite volume contains an immersed, closed, quasi-Fuchsian surface.
It is well known that every quasi-Fuchsian manifold admits at least one closed incompressible minimal surface, and at most finitely many of them. In this paper, for any prescribed integer $N>0$, we construct a quasi-Fuchsian manifold which contains at least $2^N$ such minimal surfaces. As a consequence, there exists some simple close Jordan curve on $S^2_\infty$ such that there are at least $2^N$ disk-type complete minimal surface in $\mathbb{H}^3$ sharing this Jordan curve as the asymptotic boundary.
We study the Liouville action for quasi-Fuchsian groups with parabolic and elliptic elements. In particular, when the group is Fuchsian, the contribution of elliptic elements to the classical Liouville action is derived in terms of the Bloch-Wigner functions. We prove the first and second variation formulas for the classical Liouville action on the quasi-Fuchsian deformation space. We prove an equality expressing the holography principle, which relates the Liouville action and the renormalized volume for quasi-Fuchsian groups with parabolic and elliptic elements. We also construct the potentia…
Making use of the dual Bonahon-Schläfli formula, we prove that the dual volume of the convex core of a quasi-Fuchsian manifold $M$ is bounded by an explicit constant, depending only on the topology of $M$, times the Weil-Petersson distance between the hyperbolic structures on the upper and lower boundary components of the convex core of $M$.
An almost-Fuchsian group is a quasi-Fuchsian group such that the quotient hyperbolic manifold contains a closed incompressible minimal surface with principal curvatures contained in (-1,1). We show that the domain of discontinuity of an almost-Fuchsian group contains many balls of a fixed spherical radius in the visual boundary of hyperbolic 3-space. This yields a necessary condition for a quasi-Fuchsian group to be almost-Fuchsian which involves only conformal geometry. As an application, we prove that there are no doubly-degenerate geometric limits of almost-Fuchsian groups.
We prove that if S is a closed compact surface of negative Euler characteristic, and if R is a quasi-Fuchsian representation in PSL(2,C), then the deformation space M(k,R) of branched projective structures on S with total branching order k and holonomy R is connected, as soon as k>0. Equivalently, two branched projective structures with the same quasi-Fuchsian holonomy and the same number of branch points are related by a movement of branch points. In particular grafting annuli are obtained by moving branch points. In the appendix we give an explicit atlas for the space M(k,R). It is shown to …
In this paper, it is shown that every closed hyperbolic 3-manifold contains an immersed quasi-Fuchsian closed subsurface of odd Euler characteristic. The construction adopts the good pants method, and the primary new ingredient is an enhanced version of the connection principle, which allows one to connect any two frames with a path of frames in a prescribed relative homology class of the frame bundle. The existence result is applied to show that every uniform lattice of $\mathrm{PSL}(2,\mathbb{C})$ admits an exhausting nested sequence of sublattices with exponential homological torsion growth…
We study unions of fundamental domains of a Fuchsian group, especially those with hyperbolic plane metric realizing the metric of the corresponding hyperbolic surface. We call these unions the \textit{geodesic covers} of the Fuchsian group or the hyperbolic surface. The paper contributes to showing that finiteness of geodesic covers is basically another characterization of geometrically finiteness. The resolution of geometrically finite case is based on Shimizu's lemma.
An almost Fuchsian 3-manifold is a quasi-Fuchsian manifold which contains an incompressible closed minimal surface with principal curvatures in the range of $(-1,1)$. Such a 3-manifold $M$ admits a foliation of parallel surfaces, whose locus in Teichmüller space is represented as a path $γ$, we show that $γ$ joins the conformal structures of the two components of the conformal boundary of $M$. Moreover, we obtain an upper bound for the Teichmüller distance between any two points on $γ$, in particular, the Teichmüller distance between the two components of the conformal boundary of $M$, in term…
We study limits of quasifuchsian groups for which the bending measures on the convex hull boundary tend to zero, giving necessary and sufficient conditions for the limit group to exist and be Fuchsian. As an application we complete the proof of a conjecture made in \cite{S1}, that the closure of pleating varieties for quasifuchsian groups meet Fuchsian space exactly in Kerckhoff's lines of minima of length functions. Doubling our examples gives rise to a large class of cone manifolds which degenerate to hyperbolic surfaces as the cone angles approach $2π$.
This paper proves that every finite volume hyperbolic 3-manifold M contains a ubiquitous collection of closed, immersed, quasi-Fuchsian surfaces. These surfaces are ubiquitous in the sense that their preimages in the universal cover separate any pair of disjoint, non-asymptotic geodesic planes. The proof relies in a crucial way on the corresponding theorem of Kahn and Markovic for closed 3-manifolds. As a corollary of this result and a companion statement about surfaces with cusps, we recover Wise's theorem that the fundamental group of M acts freely and cocompactly on a CAT(0) cube complex.
We consider the space of all quasifuchsian metrics on the product of a surface with the real line. We show that, in a neighborhood of the submanifold consisting of fuchsian metrics, every non-fuchsian metric is completely determined by the bending data of its convex core.
We prove that any rigid representation of $π_1Σ_g$ in $\mathrm{Homeo}_+(S^1)$ with Euler number at least $g$ is necessarily semi-conjugate to a discrete, faithful representation into $\mathrm{PSL}(2,\mathbb{R})$. Combined with earlier work of Matsumoto, this precisely characterizes Fuchsian actions by a topological rigidity property. Though independent, this work can be read as an introduction to the companion paper {\em rigidity and geometricity for surface group actions on the circle}, by the same authors.
Almost-Fuchsian manifold is a class of complete hyperbolic three manifolds. Such a three-manifold is a quasi-Fuchsian manifold which contains a closed incompressible minimal surface with principal curvatures everywhere in the range of (-1, 1). In such a manifold, the minimal surface is unique and embedded, hence one can parametrize these hyperbolic three-manifolds by their minimal surfaces. In this paper we obtain estimates on several geometric and analytical quantities of an almost-Fuchsian manifold M in terms of the data on the minimal surface. In particular, we obtain an upper bound for the…
We consider 3-dimensional hyperbolic cone-manifolds, singular along infinite lines, which are ``convex co-compact'' in a natural sense. We prove an infinitesimal rigidity statement when the angle around the singular lines is less than $π$: any first-order deformation changes either one of those angles or the conformal structure at infinity, with marked points corresponding to the endpoints of the singular lines. Moreover, any small variation of the conformal structure at infinity and of the singular angles can be achieved by a unique small deformation of the cone-manifold structure.
Let $S=Γ\backslash \mathbb{H}$ be a hyperbolic surface of finite topological type, such that the Fuchsian group $Γ\le \operatorname{PSL}_2(\mathbb{R})$ is non-elementary, and consider any generating set $\mathfrak S$ of $Γ$. When sampling by an $n$-step random walk in $π_1(S) \cong Γ$ with each step given by an element in $\mathfrak S$, the subset of this sampled set comprised of hyperbolic elements approaches full measure as $n\to \infty$, and for this subset, the distribution of geometric lengths obeys a Law of Large Numbers, Central Limit Theorem, Large Deviations Principle, and Local Limit…
For a holomorphic vector bundle $E$ over a Hermitian manifold $M$ there are two important notions of curvature positivity, the Griffiths positivity and Nakano positivity. We study the consequence of these positivities and the relevant estimates. If $E$ is Griffiths negative over Kähler manifold, then there is a Kähler metric on its total space $E$, and we calculate the curvature and prove the non-positivity of the curvature along the tautological direction. The Nakano positivity can be formulated as a positivity for the Nakano curvature operator and we give estimate the Nakano curvature operat…
Let Gamma < PSL_2(C) be discrete, cofinite volume, and noncocompact. We prove that for all K > 1, there is a subgroup H < Gamma that is K-quasiconformally conjugate to a discrete cocompact subgroup of PSL_2(R). Along with previous work of Kahn and Markovic, this proves that every finite covolume Kleinian group has a nearly Fuchsian surface subgroup.
We examine the dependence of the deformation obtained by bending quasi-Fuchsian structures on the bending lamination. We show that when we consider bending quasi-Fuchsian structures on a closed surface, the conditions obtained by Epstein and Marden to relate weak convergence of arbitrary laminations to the convergence of bending cocycles are not necessary. Bending may not be continuous on the set of all measured laminations. However we show that if we restrict our attention to laminations with non negative real and imaginary parts then the deformation depends continuously on the lamination.
An almost Fuchsian manifold is a quasi-Fuchsian hyperbolic three-manifold that contains a closed incompressible minimal surface with principal curvatures everywhere in the range of (-1,1). In such a hyperbolic three-manifold, the minimal surface is unique and embedded, hence one can parametrize these three-manifolds by their minimal surfaces. We prove that any closed surface which is a graph over any fixed surface of small principal curvatures can be deformed into the minimal surface via the mean curvature flow. We also obtain an upper bound for the hyperbolic volume of the convex core of M, a…
We prove that the hitting measure is singular with respect to Lebesgue measure for any random walk on a cocompact Fuchsian group generated by translations joining opposite sides of a symmetric hyperbolic polygon. Moreover, the Hausdorff dimension of the hitting measure is strictly less than 1. A similar statement is proven for Coxeter groups. Along the way, we prove for cocompact Fuchsian groups a purely geometric inequality for geodesic lengths, strongly reminiscent of the Anderson-Canary-Culler-Shalen inequality for free Kleinian groups.
We study global aspects of the mean curvature flow of non-separating hypersurfaces $S$ in closed manifolds. For instance, if $S$ has non-vanishing mean curvature, we show its level set flow converges smoothly towards an embedded minimal hypersurface $Γ$. We prove a similar result for the flow with surgery in dimension 2. As an application we show the existence of monotone incompressible isotopies in manifolds with negative curvature. Combining this result with min-max theory, we show that quasi-Fuchsian and hyperbolic $3$-manifolds fibered over $\mathrm{S}^1$ admit smooth entire foliations who…
Motivated by questions in detecting minimal surfaces in hyperbolic manifolds, we study the behavior of geometric flows in complete hyperbolic three-manifolds. In most cases the flows develop singularities in finite time. In this paper, we investigate the mean curvature flow in a class of complete hyperbolic 3-manifolds (Fuchsian manifolds) which are warped products of a closed surface of genus at least two and the real line. In particular, we prove that there exists a large class of closed initial surfaces, as geodesic graphs over the totally geodesic surface $Σ$, such that the mean curvature …
Geometrization theorem, fibered case: Every three-manifold that fibers over the circle admits a geometric decomposition. Double limit theorem: for any sequence of quasi-Fuchsian groups whose controlling pair of conformal structures tends toward a pair of projectively measured laminations that bind the surface, there is a convergent subsequence. This preprint also analyzes the quasi-isometric geometry of quasi-Fuchsian 3-manifolds. This eprint is based on a 1986 preprint, which was refereed and accepted for publication, but which I neglected to correct and return. The referee's corrections have…
Bowditch's JSJ tree for splittings over 2-ended subgroups is a quasi-isometry invariant for 1-ended hyperbolic groups which are not cocompact Fuchsian. Our main result gives an explicit, computable "visual" construction of this tree for certain hyperbolic right-angled Coxeter groups. As an application of our construction we identify a large class of such groups for which the JSJ tree, and hence the visual boundary, is a complete quasi-isometry invariant, and thus the quasi-isometry problem is decidable. We also give a direct proof of the fact that among the Coxeter groups we consider, the coco…
We use an elliptic differential equation of Tzitzeica type to construct a minimal Lagrangian surface in CH2 from the data of a compact hyperbolic Riemann surface and a small holomorphic cubic differential. The minimal Lagrangian surface is invariant under an SU(2,1) action of the fundamental group. We further parameterise a neighborhood of the R-Fuchsian representations in the representation space by pairs consisting of a point in Teichmuller space and a small cubic differential. By constructing a fundamental domain, we show these representations are complex-hyperbolic quasi-Fuchsian, thus rec…
