If M is a closed simple 3-manifold whose fundamental group contains a genus-g surface group for some g>1, and if the dimension of H_1(M;Z_2) is at least max(3g-1,6), we show that M contains a closed, incompressible surface of genus at most g. This improves the main topological result of part I, in which the the same conclusion was obtained under the stronger hypothesis that the dimension of H_1(M;Z_2) is at least 4g-1. As an application we show that if M is a closed orientable hyperbolic 3-manifold with volume at most 3.08, then H_1(M;Z_2) has dimension at most 5.
A major challenge in the study of the structure of the three-dimensional homology cobordism group is to understand the interaction between hyperbolic geometry and homology cobordism. In this paper, for a hyperbolic homology sphere $Y$ we derive explicit bounds on the relative grading between irreducible solutions to the Seiberg-Witten equations and the reducible one in terms of the spectral and Riemannian geometry of $Y$. Using this, we provide explicit bounds on some numerical invariants arising in monopole Floer homology (and its $\mathrm{Pin}(2)$-equivariant refinement). We apply this to st…
Auckly gave two examples of irreducible integer homology spheres (one toroidal and one hyperbolic) which are not surgery on a knot in the three-sphere. Using Heegaard Floer homology, the authors and Karakurt provided infinitely many small Seifert fibered examples. In this note, we extend those results to give infinitely many hyperbolic examples, as well as infinitely many examples with arbitrary JSJ decomposition.
We give an upper bound for the growth of homology torsions of finite coverings of irreducible 3-manifolds with tori boundary in terms of hyperbolic volume.
In this paper we provide the first examples of arithmetic hyperbolic 3-manifolds that are rational homology spheres and bound geometrically either compact or cusped hyperbolic 4-manifolds.
In this note, we show that if there is a knot in $S^3$ having $\mathbb{Z}_m$ torsion in its Khovanov homology, then there are infinitely many hyperbolic knots and infinitely many prime satellite knots having $\mathbb{Z}_m$ torsion in their Khovanov homology. As an application, we give the first known examples of hyperbolic knots and links with odd (and other non-$\mathbb{Z}_2$ torsion) in their Khovanov homology.
The main goal of this note is to show that the study of closed hyperbolic surfaces with maximum length systole is in fact the study of surfaces with maximum length homological systole. The same result is shown to be true for once-punctured surfaces, and is shown to fail for surfaces with a large number of cusps.
We study the homology of Riemannian manifolds of finite volume that are covered by an $r$-fold product $(\mathbb{H}^2)^r = \mathbb{H}^2 \times \ldots \times \mathbb{H}^2$ of hyperbolic planes. Using a variation of a method developed by Avramidi and Nguyen-Phan, we show that any such manifold $M$ possesses, up to finite coverings, an arbitrarily large number of compact oriented flat totally geodesic $r$-dimensional submanifolds whose fundamental classes are linearly independent in the homology group $H_r(M;\mathbb{Z})$.
We give examples of non-fibered hyperbolic knot complements in homology spheres that are not commensurable to fibered knot complements in homology spheres. In fact, we give many examples of knot complements in homology spheres with the property that every commensurable knot complement in a homology sphere has non-monic Alexander polynomial.
Among other things, we prove the following two topologcal statements about closed hyperbolic 3-manifolds. First, every rational second homology class of a closed hyperbolic 3-manifold has a positve integral multiple represented by an oriented connected closed $π_1$-injectively immersed quasi-Fuchsian subsurface. In the present paper, we construct a cusped hyperbolic $4$-manifold with all cusp sections homeomorphic to the Hantzsche-Wendt manifold, which is a rational homology sphere. By a result of Golénia and Moroianu, the Laplacian on $2$-forms on such a manifold has purely discrete spectrum. This shows that one of the main results of Mazzeo and Phillips from 1990 cannot hold without additional assumptions on the homology of the cusps. If a closed, orientable hyperbolic 3--manifold M has volume at most 1.22 then H_1(M;Z_p) has dimension at most 2 for every prime p not 2 or 7, and H_1(M;Z_2) and H_1(M;Z_7) have dimension at most 3. The proof combines several deep results about hyperbolic 3--manifolds. The strategy is to compare the volume of a tube about a shortest closed geodesic C in M with the volumes of tubes about short closed geodesics in a sequence of hyperbolic manifolds obtained from M by Dehn surgeries on C.
In this short note, we exhibit an infinite family of hyperbolic rational homology $3$--spheres which do not admit any fillable contact structures. We also note that most of these manifolds do admit tight contact structures.
We will provide bounds on both the Betti numbers and the torsion part of the homology of hyperbolic orbifolds. These bounds are linear in the volume and are a direct consequence of an efficient simplicial model of the thick part, which we will construct as well. For a complete, finite volume real hyperbolic n-manifold M, we investigate the map between homology of the cusps of M and the homology of $M$. Our main result provides a proof of a result required in a recent paper of Frigerio, Lafont, and Sisto.
Let ${\mathfrak M}$ be a closed, orientable, hyperbolic 3-orbifold whose singular set is a link, and such that $π_1({\mathfrak M})$ contains no hyperbolic triangle group. We show that if the underlying manifold $|{\mathfrak M}|$ is irreducible, and $|{\mathfrak M}|$ is irreducible for every two-sheeted (orbifold) covering $\widetilde{\mathfrak M}$ of ${\mathfrak M}$, and if ${\rm vol} {\mathfrak M}\le1.72$, then $\dim H_1({\mathfrak M};{\mathbb Z}_2)\le 15$. We show that if M is a complete, finite-volume, hyperbolic 3-manifold having exactly one cusp, and if H_1(M;Z_2) has dimension at least 6, then M has volume greater than 5.06. We also show that if M is a closed, orientable hyperbolic 3-manifold such that H_1(M;Z_2) has dimension at least 4, and if the image of the cup product map in H^2(M;Z_2) has dimension at most 1, then M has volume greater than 3.08. We show that for every finite-volume hyperbolic $3$-manifold $M$ and every prime $p$ we have $\text{dim}\ H_1(M;\mathbf{F}_p)< 168.602\cdot\text{vol}\ M$. There are slightly stronger estimates if $p = 2$ or if $M$ is non-compact. This improves on a result proved by Agol, Leininger and Margalit, which gave the same inequality with a coefficient of $334.08$ in place of $168.602$. It also improves on the analogous result with a coefficient of about $260$, which could have been obtained by combining the arguments due to Agol, Leininger and Margalit with a result due to Böröczky. This paper explores the conjecture that the following are equivalent for rational homology 3-spheres: having left-orderable fundamental group, having non-minimal Heegaard Floer homology, and admitting a co-orientable taut foliation. In particular, it adds further evidence in favor of this conjecture by studying these three properties for more than 300,000 hyperbolic rational homology 3-spheres. The main result of this paper is that any $3$-dimensional manifold with a finite group action is equivariantly, invertibly homology cobordant to a hyperbolic manifold; this result holds with suitable twisted coefficients as well. The following two consequences motivated this work. First, there are hyperbolic equivariant corks (as defined in previous work of the authors) for a wide class of finite groups. Using an argument of Baldwin--Hu--Sivek, we prove that if $K$ is a hyperbolic fibered knot with fiber $F$ in a closed, oriented $3$--manifold $Y$, and $\widehat{HFK}(Y,K,[F], g(F)-1)$ has rank $1$, then the monodromy of $K$ is freely isotopic to a pseudo-Anosov map with no fixed points. In particular, this shows that the monodromy of a hyperbolic L-space knot is freely isotopic to a map with no fixed points.
Under mild topological restrictions, we obtain new linear upper bounds for the dimension of the mod $p$ homology (for any prime $p$) of a finite-volume orientable hyperbolic $3$ manifold $M$ in terms of its volume. A surprising feature of the arguments in the paper is that they require an application of the Four Color Theorem. Let $M$ be a complete oriented hyperbolic $3$--manifold of finite volume. Using classifying spaces for families of subgroups we construct a class $β_P(M)$ in the Adamson relative homology group $H_3([PSL_2(\mathbb{C}):\bar{P}];\mathbb{Z})$, where $\bar{P}$ is the subgroup of parabolic transformations which fix $\infty$ in the Riemann sphere. We introduce a new homology theory of quandles, called simplicial quandle homology, which is quite different from quandle homology developed by Carter et al. We construct a homomorphism from a quandle homology group to a simplicial quandle homology group. As an application, we obtain a method for computing the complex volume of a hyperbolic link only from its diagram.
We construct hyperbolic integer homology 3-spheres where the injectivity radius is arbitrarily large for nearly all points of the manifold. As a consequence, there exists a sequence of closed hyperbolic 3-manifolds which Benjamini-Schramm converge to H^3 whose normalized Ray-Singer analytic torsions do not converge to the L^2-analytic torsion of H^3. This contrasts with the work of Abert et. al. who showed that Benjamini-Schramm convergence forces convergence of normalized betti numbers. This paper continues our exploration of homology cobordism of 3-manifolds using our recent results on Cheeger-Gromov rho-invariants associated to amenable representations. We introduce a new type of torsion in 3-manifold groups we call hidden torsion, and an algebraic approximation we call local hidden torsion. We construct infinitely many hyperbolic 3-manifolds which have local hidden torsion in the transfinite lower central subgroup. We show that if $M$ is any closed, orientable hyperbolic $3$-manifold with ${\rm vol}\ M\le3.69$, we have ${\rm dim}\ H_1(M;{\bf F}_2)\le7$. This may be regarded as a qualitative improvement of a result due to Culler and Shalen, because the constant $3.69$ is greater than the ordinal corresponding to $ω^2$ in the well-ordered set of finite volumes of hyperbolic $3$-manifolds. This paper contains a purely topological theorem and a geometric application. The topological theorem states that if M is a simple closed orientable 3-manifold such that π_1(M) contains a genus g surface group and H_1(M;Z/2Z) has rank at least 4g-1 then M contains a closed incompressible surface of genus at most g. We study when the Thurston norm is detected by twisted Alexander polynomials associated to representations of the 3-manifold group to SL(2, C). Specifically, we show that the hyperbolic torsion polynomial determines the genus for a large class of hyperbolic knots in the 3-sphere which includes all special arborescent knots and many knots whose ordinary Alexander polynomial is trivial. Suppose that a hyperbolic knot in $S^3$ admits a finite surgery, Boyer and Zhang proved that the surgery slope must be either integral or half-integral, and they conjectured that the latter case does not happen. Using the correction terms in Heegaard Floer homology, we prove that if a hyperbolic knot in $S^3$ admits a half-integral finite surgery, then the knot must have the same knot Floer homology as one of eight non-hyperbolic knots which are known to admit such surgeries, and the resulting manifold must be one of ten spherical space forms. Given a hyperelliptic hyperbolic surface $S$ of genus $g \geq 2$, we find bounds on the lengths of homologically independent loops on $S$. As a consequence, we show that for any $λ\in (0,1)$ there exists a constant $N(λ)$ such that every such surface has at least $\lceil λ\cdot \frac{2}{3} g \rceil$ homologically independent loops of length at most $N(λ)$, extending the result in [Mu] and [BPS]. It is conjectured that every cusped hyperbolic 3-manifold has a decomposition into positive volume ideal hyperbolic tetrahedra (a "geometric" triangulation of the manifold). Under a mild homology assumption on the manifold we construct topological ideal triangulations which admit a strict angle structure, which is a necessary condition for the triangulation to be geometric. In particular, every knot or link complement in the 3-sphere has such a triangulation. We compute the equivariant $K$-homology of the classifying space for proper actions, for compact 3-dimensional hyperbolic reflection groups. This coincides with the topological $K$-theory of the reduced $C^\ast$-algebra associated to the group, via the Baum-Connes conjecture. We show that, for any such reflection group, the associated $K$-theory groups are torsion-free. As a result we can promote previous rational computations to integral compu- tations. Let G be a word-hyperbolic group, obtained as a graph of free groups amalgamated along cyclic subgroups. If H_2(G;Q) is nonzero, then G contains a closed hyperbolic surface subgroup. Moreover, the unit ball of the Gromov-Thurston norm on H_2(G;R) is a finite-sided rational polyhedron.
We study global aspects of the mean curvature flow of non-separating hypersurfaces $S$ in closed manifolds. For instance, if $S$ has non-vanishing mean curvature, we show its level set flow converges smoothly towards an embedded minimal hypersurface $Γ$. We prove a similar result for the flow with surgery in dimension 2. As an application we show the existence of monotone incompressible isotopies in manifolds with negative curvature. Combining this result with min-max theory, we show that quasi-Fuchsian and hyperbolic $3$-manifolds fibered over $\mathrm{S}^1$ admit smooth entire foliations who…
An L-space is a rational homology 3-sphere with minimal Heegaard Floer homology. We give the first examples of hyperbolic L-spaces with no symmetries. In particular, unlike all previously known L-spaces, these manifolds are not double branched covers of links in S^3. We prove the existence of infinitely many such examples (in several distinct families) using a mix of hyperbolic geometry, Floer theory, and verified computer calculations. In the preceding paper, Calegari and Dunfield exhibit a sequence of hyperbolic 3-manifolds which have increasing injectivity radius, and which, subject to some conjectures in number theory, are rational homology spheres. We prove unconditionally that these manifolds are rational homology spheres, and give a sufficient condition for a tower of hyperbolic 3-manifolds to have first Betti number 0 at each level. The methods involved are purely pro-p group theoretical.
Let M be a hyperbolic n-manifold whose cusps have torus cross-sections. In arXiv:0901.0056, the authors constructed a variety of nonpositively and negatively curved spaces as "2π-fillings" of M by replacing the cusps of M with compact "partial cones" of their boundaries. These 2π-fillings are closed pseudomanifolds, and so have a fundamental class. We show that the simplicial volume of any such 2π-filling is positive, and bounded above by Vol(M)/v_n, where v_n is the volume of a regular ideal hyperbolic n-simplex. We prove that for n>4 there is no compact arithmetic hyperbolic n-manifold whose Euler characteristic has absolute value equal to 2. In particular, this shows the nonexistence of arithmetically defined hyperbolic rational homology n-sphere with n even different than 4.
Any closed, oriented, hyperbolic three-manifold with nontrivial second homology has many quasigeodesic flows, where quasigeodesic means that flow lines are uniformly efficient in measuring distance in relative homotopy classes. The flows are pseudo-Anosov flows which are almost transverse to finite depth foliations in the manifold. The main tool is the use of a sutured manifold hierarchy which has good geometric properties.
In Thurston's notes, he gives two different definitions of the Gromov norm (also called simplicial volume) of a manifold and states that they are equal but does not prove it. Gromov proves it in the special case of hyperbolic manifolds as a consequence of his proof that simplicial volume is proportional to volume. We give a proof for all differentiable manifolds. This version corrects a few typos in an earlier version and formally proves the theorem for differentiable manifolds rather than locally finite simplicial complexes (but very few actual changes have been made).
It is known that every closed oriented 3-manifold is homology cobordant to a hyperbolic 3-manifold. By contrast we show that many homology cobordism classes contain no Seifert fibered 3-manifold. This is accomplished by determining the isomorphism type of the rational cohomology ring of all Seifert fibered 3-manifolds with no 2-torsion in their first homology. Then we exhibit families of examples of 3-manifolds (obtained by surgery on links), with fixed linking form and cohomology ring, that are not homology cobordant to any Seifert fibered space (as shown by their rational cohomology ring). We prove that the cardinality of the torsion subgroups in homology of a closed hyperbolic manifold of any dimension can be bounded by a doubly exponential function of its diameter. It would follow from a conjecture by Bergeron and Venkatesh that the order of growth in our bound is sharp. We also determine how the number of non-commensurable closed hyperbolic manifolds of dimension at least 3 and bounded diameter grows. The lower bound implies that the fraction of arithmetic manifolds tends to zero as the diameter goes up.
