We will provide bounds on both the Betti numbers and the torsion part of the homology of hyperbolic orbifolds. These bounds are linear in the volume and are a direct consequence of an efficient simplicial model of the thick part, which we will construct as well. The homology statements complement previous work of Bader, Gelander and Sauer (torsion homology of manifolds), Samet (Betti numbers of orbifolds) and a classical theorem of Gromov (Betti numbers of manifolds).
For arithmetic, non-compact hyperbolic orbifolds -- i.e. in the case of arithmetic, non-uniform lattices in $\operatorname{Isom}(\mathbb{H}^n)$ -- the strongest results will be obtained.
For an orbifold M we define a homology group, called t-singular homology group t-H_q(M), which depends not only on the topological structure of the underlying space of M, but also on the orbifold structure of M. We prove that it is a b-homotopy invariant of orbifolds. If M is a manifold, t-H_q(M) coincides with the usual singular homology group. We calculate the t-singular homology groups with Z-coefficients of several orbifolds. The t-singular homology group with rational coefficients of an orbifold M is isomorphic to the singular homology group with rational coefficients of M (and to that of…
To each connected component in the space of semisimple representations from the orbifold fundamental group of the base orbifold of a Seifert fibered homology 3-sphere into the Lie group U(2,1), we associate a real number called the "orbifold Toledo invariant." For each such orbifold, there exists an elliptic surface over it, called a Dolgachev surface. Using the theory of Higgs bundles on these Dolgachev surfaces, we explicitly compute all values taken on by the orbifold Toledo invariant.
By using Klein's model for hyperbolic geometry, hyperbolic structures on orbifolds or manifolds provide examples of real projective structures. By Andreev's theorem, many 3-dimensional reflection orbifolds admit a finite volume hyperbolic structure, and such a hyperbolic structure is unique. However, the induced real projective structure on some such 3-orbifolds deforms into a family of real projective structures that are not induced from hyperbolic structures. In this paper, we find new classes of compact and complete hyperbolic reflection 3-orbifolds with such deformations. We also explain n…
We construct pairs of non-isometric hyperbolic 3-orbifolds with the same topological type and volume. Topologically these orbifolds are mapping tori of pseudo-Anosov maps of the surface of genus 2, with singular locus a fibred (hyperbolic) link with five components.
Using bordered Floer theory, we construct an invariant $\widehat{\mathit{HFO}}(Y^{\text{orb}})$ for $3$-orbifolds $Y^{\text{orb}}$ with singular set a knot that generalizes the hat flavor $\widehat{\mathit{HF}}(Y)$ of Heegaard Floer homology for closed $3$-manifolds $Y$. We show that for a large class of $3$-orbifolds, $\widehat{\mathit{HFO}}$ behaves like $\widehat{\mathit{HF}}$ in that $\widehat{\mathit{HFO}}$, together with a relative $\mathbb{Z}_2$-grading, categorifies the order of $H_1^{\text{orb}}$. When $Y^{\text{orb}}$ arises as Dehn surgery on an integer-framed knot in $S^3$, we use …
We extend the Neumann's methods and give the explicit formulae for the volume and the Chern-Simons invariant for hyperbolic alternating knot orbifolds.
We show that any immersion, which is not a covering of an embedded 2-orbifold, of a totally geodesic hyperbolic turnover in a complete orientable hyperbolic 3-orbifold is contained in a hyperbolic 3-suborbifold with totally geodesic boundary, called the "turnover core,'' whose volume is bounded from above by a function depending only on the area of the given turnover. Furthermore, we show that, for a given type of turnover, there are only finitely many possibilities for the turnover core. As a corollary, if the volume of a complete orientable hyperbolic 3-orbifold is at least 2πand if the fund…
For two-dimensional orientable hyperbolic orbifolds, we show that the radius of a maximal embedded disk is greater or equal to an explicit constant ρ_T, with equality if and only if the orbifold is a sphere with three cone points of order 2, 3 and 7.
Kerckhoff and Storm conjectured that compact hyperbolic n-orbifolds with totally geodesic boundary are infinitesimally rigid when n>3. This paper verifies this conjecture for a specific example based on the 4-dimensional hyperbolic 120-cell.
We compute and analyse the moduli space of those real projective structures on a hyperbolic 3-orbifold that are modelled on a single ideal tetrahedron in projective space. Parameterisations are given in terms of classical invariants, traces, and geometric invariants, cross ratios.
By use of H. C. Wang's bound on the radius of a ball embedded in the fundamental domain of a lattice of a semisimple Lie group, we construct an explicit lower bound for the volume of a quaternionic hyperbolic orbifold that depends only on dimension.
We determine the three hyperbolic 5-orbifolds of smallest volume among compact arithmetic orbifolds, and we identify their fundamental groups with hyperbolic Coxeter groups. This gives two different ways to compute the volume of these orbifolds.
We calculate the Chern-Simons invariants of the hyperbolic double twist knot orbifolds using the Schläfli formula for the generalized Chern-Simons function on the family of cone-manifold structures of double twist knots.
In this paper an explicit formula for a lower bound on the volume of a hyperbolic orbifold, dependent on dimension and the maximal order of torsion in the orbifolds' fundamental group, is constructed.
For a hyperbolic $3$-orbifold with underlying space the $3$-sphere, we obtain a lower bound on its volume in the case that it contains an essential $2$-suborbifold with underlying space the $2$-sphere with four cone points. Our techniques involve computing the guts of the orbifold split along the $2$-suborbifold via a careful analysis of its topology. We also characterize the orbifolds of this type that have empty guts.
We consider non-elementary Kleinian groups Γ, without invariant plane, generated by an elliptic and a hyperbolic element with their axes lying in one plane. We find presentations and a complete list of orbifolds uniformized by such Γ.
Let ${\mathfrak M}$ be a closed, orientable, hyperbolic 3-orbifold whose singular set is a link, and such that $π_1({\mathfrak M})$ contains no hyperbolic triangle group. We show that if the underlying manifold $|{\mathfrak M}|$ is irreducible, and $|{\mathfrak M}|$ is irreducible for every two-sheeted (orbifold) covering $\widetilde{\mathfrak M}$ of ${\mathfrak M}$, and if ${\rm vol} {\mathfrak M}\le1.72$, then $\dim H_1({\mathfrak M};{\mathbb Z}_2)\le 15$. Furthermore, if ${\rm vol} {\mathfrak M}\le1.22$ then $\dim H_1({\mathfrak M};{\mathbb Z}_2)\le 11$, and if ${\rm vol} {\mathfrak M}\le0.…
In this paper we derive an explicit lower bound on the volume of a hyperbolic $n$-orbifold for dimensions greater than or equal to four. Our main tool is H. C. Wang's bound on the radius of a ball embedded in the fundamental domain of a discrete subgroup of a semisimple Lie group.
For X = R, C, or H it is well known that cusp cross-sections of finite volume X-hyperbolic (n+1)-orbifolds are flat n-orbifolds or almost flat orbifolds modelled on the (2n+1)-dimensional Heisenberg group N_{2n+1} or the (4n+3)-dimensional quaternionic Heisenberg group N_{4n+3}(H). We give a necessary and sufficient condition for such manifolds to be diffeomorphic to a cusp cross-section of an arithmetic X-hyperbolic (n+1)-orbifold. A principal tool in the proof of this classification theorem is a subgroup separability result which may be of independent interest.
Volume is a natural measure of complexity of a Riemannian manifold. In this survey, we discuss the results and conjectures concerning n-dimensional hyperbolic manifolds and orbifolds of small volume.
We classify the 3-dimensional hyperbolic polyhedral orbifolds that contain no embedded essential 2-suborbifolds, up to decomposition along embedded hyperbolic triangle orbifolds (turnovers). We give a necessary condition for a 3-dimensional hyperbolic polyhedral orbifold to contain an immersed (singular) hyperbolic turnover, we classify the triangle subgroups of the fundamental groups of orientable 3-dimensional hyperbolic tetrahedral orbifolds in the case when all of the vertices of the tetrahedra are non-finite, and we provide a conjectural classification of all the triangle subgroups of the…
We calculate the Chern-Simons invariants of the hyperbolic orbifolds of the knot with Conway's notation $C(2n, 3)$ using the Schläfli formula for the generalized Chern-Simons function on the family of $C(2n,3)$ cone-manifold structures. We present the concrete and explicit formula of them. We apply the general instructions of Hilden, Lozano, and Montesinos-Amilibia and extend the Ham and Lee's methods. As an application, we calculate the Chern-Simons invariants of cyclic coverings of the hyperbolic $C(2n,3)$ orbifolds.
In this paper we analyze and classify the totally geodesic subspaces of finite volume quaternionic hyperbolic orbifolds and their generalizations, locally symmetric orbifolds arising from irreducible lattices in Lie groups of the form $(\mathbf{Sp}_{2n}(\mathbb{R}))^q \times \prod_{i=1}^r \mathbf{Sp}(p_i,n-p_i) \times (\mathbf{Sp}_{2n}(\mathbb{C}))^s$. We give criteria for when the totally geodesic subspaces of such an orbifold determine its commensurability class. We give a parametrization of the commensurability classes of finite volume quaternionic hyperbolic orbifolds in terms of arithmeti…
In this paper, we construct families of nonisometric hyperbolic orbifolds that contain the same isometry classes of nonflat totally geodesic subspaces. The main tool is a variant of the well-known Sunada method for constructing length-isospectral Riemannian manifolds that handles totally geodesic submanifolds of multiple codimensions simultaneously.
We analyze the orbifolds that can be obtained as quotients of hyperbolic 3-manifolds admitting a Heegaard splitting of genus two by their orientation preserving isometry groups. The genus two hyperbolic 3-manifolds are exactly the hyperbolic 2-fold branched coverings of 3-bridge links. If the 3-bridge link is a knot, we prove that the underlying topological space of the quotient orbifold is either the 3-sphere or a lens space and we describe the combinatorial setting of the singular set for each possible isometry group. In the case of 3-bridge links with two or three components, the situation …
A Coxeter $n$-orbifold is an $n$-dimensional orbifold based on a polytope with silvered boundary facets. Each pair of adjacent facets meet on a ridge of some order $m$, whose neighborhood is locally modeled on ${\mathbb R}^n$ modulo the dihedral group of order $2m$ generated by two reflections. For $n \geq 3$, we study the deformation space of real projective structures on a compact Coxeter $n$-orbifold $Q$ admitting a hyperbolic structure. Let $e_+(Q)$ be the number of ridges of order $\geq 3$. A neighborhood of the hyperbolic structure in the deformation space is a cell of dimension $e_+(Q) …
A generic geodesic on a finite area, hyperbolic 2-orbifold exhibits an infinite sequence of penetrations into a neighborhood of a cone singularity, so that the sequence of depths of maximal penetration has a limiting distribution. The distribution function is the same for all such surfaces and is described by a fairly simple formula.
We show the manifolds at infinity of the complex hyperbolic triangle groups $Δ_{3,4,4;\infty}$ and $Δ_{3,4,6;\infty}$,are one-cusped hyperbolic 3-manifolds $m038$ and $s090$ in the Snappy Census respectively. That is,these two manifolds admit spherical CR uniformizations. Moreover, these two hyperbolic 3-manifolds above can be obtained by Dehn surgeries on the first cusp of the two-cusped hyperbolic 3-manifold $m295$ in the Snappy Census with slopes $2$ and $4$ respectively. In general, the main result in this paper allow us to conjecture that the manifold at infinity of the complex hyperbolic t…
Let M be a closed orientable Seifert fibered 3-manifold with a hyperbolic base 2-orbifold, or equivalently, admitting a geometry modeled on H^2 \times R or the universal cover of SL(2,R). Our main result is that the connected component of the identity map in the diffeomorphism group Diff(M) is either contractible or homotopy equivalent to the circle, according as the center of the fundamental group of M is trivial or infinite cyclic. Apart from the remaining case of non-Haken infranilmanifolds, this completes the homeomorphism classifications of Diff(M) and of the space of Seifert fiberings of…
Using the rings of Lipschitz and Hurwitz integers $\mathbb{H}(\mathbb{Z})$ and $\mathbb{H}ur(\mathbb{Z})$ in the quaternion division algebra $\mathbb{H}$, we define several Kleinian discrete subgroups of $PSL(2,\mathbb{H})$
We show that the 1-cusped quotient of the hyperbolic space $\mathbb{H}^3$ by the tetrahedral Coxeter group $Γ_*=[5,3,6]$ has minimal volume among all non-arithmetic cusped hyperbolic 3-orbifolds, and as such it is uniquely determined. Furthermore, the lattice $Γ_*$ is incommensurable to any Gromov-Piatetski-Shapiro type lattice. Our methods have their origin in the work of C. Adams. We extend considerably this approach via the geometry of the underlying horoball configuration induced by a cusp.
We show that the conjectural cusped complex hyperbolic 2-orbifolds of minimal volume are the two smallest arithmetic complex hyperbolic 2-orbifolds. We then show that every arithmetic cusped complex hyperbolic 2-manifold of minimal volume covers one of these two orbifolds. We also give all minimal volume manifolds that simultaneously cover both minimal orbifolds.
Let $O$ be a closed $n$-dimensional arithmetic (real or complex) hyperbolic orbifold. We show that the diameter of $O$ is bounded above by $$\frac{c_1\log vol(O) + c_2}{h(O)},$$ where $h(O)$ is the Cheeger constant of $O$, $vol(O)$ is its volume, and constants $c_1$, $c_2$ depend only on $n$.
We prove that a closed 3-orbifold that fibers over a hyperbolic polygonal 2-orbifold admits a family of hyperbolic cone structures that are viewed as regeneration of the polygon, provided that the perimeter is minimal.
A major challenge in the study of the structure of the three-dimensional homology cobordism group is to understand the interaction between hyperbolic geometry and homology cobordism. In this paper, for a hyperbolic homology sphere $Y$ we derive explicit bounds on the relative grading between irreducible solutions to the Seiberg-Witten equations and the reducible one in terms of the spectral and Riemannian geometry of $Y$. Using this, we provide explicit bounds on some numerical invariants arising in monopole Floer homology (and its $\mathrm{Pin}(2)$-equivariant refinement). We apply this to st…
We study the general properties of the moduli spaces of SO(3) vortices over orbifold Riemann surfaces and use these to characterize the solutions of the SO(3) monopole equations on Seifert manifolds following in the footsteps of Mrowka, Ozsváth and Yu. We also study the solutions to the SO(3) monopole equations on S1 x (Riemann Surface) in order to motivate the construction of a version of monopole Floer homology, which we call framed monopole Floer homology, in analogy with the construction given by Kronheimer and Mrowka for the case of instanton Floer homology. Finally, the SO(3) vortex modu…
We study embedding of closed totally geodesic hyperbolic 2-orbifolds in the Bianchi orbifolds $\mathbb{H}^3/PSL(2,\mathcal{O}_d)$. Our main result shows that there is a constant $c$ such that for $d$ large enough there are at least $cd$ closed embedded totally geodesic hyperbolic 2-orbifolds. Moreover we provide a list which conjecturally consists of those $d$ for which $\mathbb{H}^3/PSL(2,\mathcal{O}_d)$ does not contain a closed embedded totally geodesic hyperbolic 2-orbifold.
Auckly gave two examples of irreducible integer homology spheres (one toroidal and one hyperbolic) which are not surgery on a knot in the three-sphere. Using Heegaard Floer homology, the authors and Karakurt provided infinitely many small Seifert fibered examples. In this note, we extend those results to give infinitely many hyperbolic examples, as well as infinitely many examples with arbitrary JSJ decomposition.
A three-dimensional orbifold $(Σ, γ_i, n_i)$, where $Σ$ is a rational homology sphere, has a universal abelian orbifold covering, whose covering group is the first orbifold homology. A singular pair $(X,C)$, where $X$ is a normal surface singularity with $\mathbb Q$HS link and $C$ is a Weil divisor, gives rise on its boundary to an orbifold. One studies the preceding orbifold notions in the algebro-geometric setting, in particular defining the universal abelian log cover of a pair. A first key theorem computes the orbifold homology from an appropriate resolution of the pair. In analogy with th…
We give an upper bound for the growth of homology torsions of finite coverings of irreducible 3-manifolds with tori boundary in terms of hyperbolic volume.
In this paper we provide the first examples of arithmetic hyperbolic 3-manifolds that are rational homology spheres and bound geometrically either compact or cusped hyperbolic 4-manifolds.
In this note, we show that if there is a knot in $S^3$ having $\mathbb{Z}_m$ torsion in its Khovanov homology, then there are infinitely many hyperbolic knots and infinitely many prime satellite knots having $\mathbb{Z}_m$ torsion in their Khovanov homology. As an application, we give the first known examples of hyperbolic knots and links with odd (and other non-$\mathbb{Z}_2$ torsion) in their Khovanov homology.
We prove that in any hyperbolic orbifold with one boundary component, the product of any hyperbolic fundamental group element with a sufficiently large multiple of the boundary is represented by a geodesic loop that virtually bounds an immersed surface. In the case that the orbifold is a disk, there are some conditions. Our results generalize work of Calegari-Louwsma and resolve a conjecture of Calegari.
It is known that the shortest non-simple closed geodesic on an orientable hyperbolic 2-orbifold passes through an orbifold point of the orbifold. This raises questions about minimal length non-simple closed geodesics disjoint from the orbifold points. Here we explore once self-intersecting closed geodesics disjoint from the orbifold points of the orbifold, called figure eight geodesics. Using fundamental domains and basic hyperbolic trigonometry we identify and classify all figure eight geodesics on triangle group orbifolds. This classification allows us to find the shortest figure eight geode…
Let ${\mathfrak M}$ be a closed, orientable, hyperbolic 3-orbifold such that $π_1({\mathfrak M})$ contains no hyperbolic triangle group. We show that strict upper bounds of 0.07625, 0.1525 and 0.22875 for ${\rm vol}\ {\mathfrak M}$ imply respective upper bounds of 23, 43 and 79 for $\dim H_1({\mathfrak M};{\mathbb F}_2 )$. Stronger results hold if we assume that the singular set $Σ$ is a link; specifically, under this assumption, strict upper bounds of 0.305, 0.4575, 0.61, 0.7625 and 0.915 for ${\rm vol}\ {\mathfrak M}$ imply respective upper bounds of 7, 13, 14, 28 and 29 for ${\rm dim}\ H_1(…
