We consider the Noetherian properties of the ring of differential operators of an affine semigroup algebra. First we show that it is always right Noetherian. Next we give a condition, based on the data of the difference between the semigroup and its scored closure, for the ring of differential operators being anti-isomorphic to another ring of differential operators. Using this, we prove that the ring of differential operators is left Noetherian if the condition is satisfied. Moreover we give some other conditions for the ring of differential operators being left Noetherian. Finally we conjecture necessary and sufficient conditions for the ring of differential operators being left Noetherian.
Resco and Small gave the first example of an affine Noetherian algebra which is not finitely presented. It is shown that their algebra has no finite-dimensional filtrations whose associated graded algebras are Noetherian, affirming their prediction. A modification of their example yields countable fields over which `almost all' (that is, a co-countable continuum of) affine Noetherian algebras lack such a filtration, and an answer to a question suggested by Irving and Small is derived.
The author has previously associated to each commutative ring with unit $R$ and étale groupoid $\mathscr G$ with locally compact, Hausdorff and totally disconnected unit space an $R$-algebra $R\mathscr G$. In this paper we characterize when $R\mathscr G$ is Noetherian and when it is Artinian. As corollaries, we extend the characterization of Abrams, Aranda~Pino and Siles~Molina of finite dimensional and of Noetherian Leavitt path algebras over a field to arbitrary commutative coefficient rings and we recover the characterization of Okniński of Noetherian inverse semigroup algebras and of Zelma…
In a series of papers \cite{BRV1}, \cite{BRV2}, \cite{BRV3} we introduced full quivers and pseudo-quivers of representations of algebras, and used them as tools in describing PI-varieties of algebras. In this paper we apply them to obtain a complete proof of Belov's solution of Specht's problem for affine algebras over an arbitrary Noetherian ring. The inductive step relies on a theorem that enables one to find a "$\bar q$-characteristic coefficient-absorbing polynomial in each T-ideal $Γ$," i.e., a non-identity of the representable algebra $A$ arising from $Γ$, whose ideal of evaluations in $…
We consider algebras over a field K defined by a presentation K <x_1,..., x_n : R >, where $R$ consists of n choose 2 square-free relations of the form x_i x_j = x_k x_l with every monomial x_i x_j, i different from j, appearing in one of the relations. Certain sufficient conditions for the algebra to be noetherian and PI are determined. For this, we prove more generally that right noetherian algebras of finite Gelfand-Kirillov dimension defined by homogeneous relations satisfy a polynomial identity. The structure of the underlying monoid, defined by the same presentation, is described. This i…
In order to study the structure of $A^+(B_n)$ -- the affine near-semiring over a Brandt semigroup -- this work completely characterizes the Green's classes of its semigroup reducts. In this connection, this work characterizes the elements of $A^+(B_n)$ and reports the size of $A^+(B_n)$. Further, idempotents and regular elements of the semigroup reducts of $A^+(B_n)$ have also been characterized and studied some relevant semigroups in $A^+(B_n)$.
This work investigates the rank properties of $A^+(B_n)$, the multiplicative semigroup reduct of the affine near-semirings over an aperiodic Brandt semigroup $B_n$. In this connection, the work obtains the small rank, lower rank and large rank of $A^+(B_n)$. Further, the work provides lower bounds for intermediate rank and upper rank of $A^+(B_n)$.
This work investigates the rank properties of $A^+(B_n)$, the additive semigroup reduct of affine near-semiring over Brandt semigroup $B_n$. In this connection, this work reports the ranks $r_1$, $r_2$, $r_3$ and $r_5$ of $A^+(B_n)$ and identifies a lower bound for the upper rank $r_4(A^+(B_n))$. While this lower bound is found to be the $r_4(A^+(B_n))$ for $n \ge 6$, in other cases where $2 \le n \le 5$, the upper rank of $A^+(B_n)$ is still open for investigation.
We show that the existence of locally finite stability conditions on the bounded derived category $\mathbf{D}^{b}(X)$ of coherent sheaves on an affine Noetherian scheme $X$ is equivalent to $\dim X=0$. We also study the spaces of stability conditions on the category of morphisms $\mathbf M_{X}$ in the derived category of the scheme $X$ and show that the spaces of stability conditions on $\mathbf{D}^{b}(X)$ and $\mathbf{M}_{X}$ are homotopy equivalent to each other.
This work generalizes the short resolution given in Proc. Amer. Math. Soc. \textbf{131}, 4, (2003), 1081--1091, to any affine semigroup. Moreover, a characterization of Apéry sets is given. This characterization lets compute Apéry sets of affine semigroups and the Frobenius number of a numerical semigroup in a simple way. We also exhibit a new characterization of the Cohen-Macaulay property for simplicial affine semigroups.
Necessary and sufficient conditions are given for a prime Noetherian algebra K[S] of a submonoid S of a polycyclic-by-finite group G to be a maximal order. These conditions are entirely in terms of the monoid S. This extends earlier results of Brown concerned with the group ring case and of the authors for the case where K[S] satisfies a polynomial identity.
We study semigroup C*-algebras of $ax+b$-semigroups over integral domains. The goal is to generalize several results about C*-algebras of $ax+b$-semigroups over rings of algebraic integers. We prove results concerning K-theory and structural properties like the ideal structure or pure infiniteness. Our methods allow us to treat $ax+b$-semigroups over a large class of integral domains containing all noetherian, integrally closed domains and coordinate rings of affine varieties over infinite fields.
It is proven that finite idempotent left non-degenerate set-theoretic solutions $(X,r)$ of the Yang-Baxter equation on a set $X$ are determined by a left simple semigroup structure on $X$ (in particular, a finite union of isomorphic copies of a group) and some maps $q$ and $φ_x$ on $X$, for $x\in X$. This structure turns out to be a group precisely when the associated structure monoid is cancellative and all the maps $φ_x$ are equal to an automorphism of this group. Equivalently, the structure algebra $K[M(X,r)]$ is right Noetherian, or in characteristic zero it has to be semiprime. The struct…
Constructions are given of Noetherian maximal orders that are finitely presented algebras over a field K, defined by monomial relations. In order to do this, it is shown that the underlying homogeneous information determines the algebraic structure of the algebra. So, it is natural to consider such algebras as semigroup algebras K[S] and to investigate the structure of the monoid S. The relationship between the prime ideals of the algebra and those of the monoid S is one of the main tools. Results analogous to fundamental facts known for the prime spectrum of algebras graded by a finite group …

We study 2-cocycle twists, or equivalently Zhang twists, of semigroup algebras over a field k. If the underlying semigroup is affine, that is abelian, cancellative and finitely generated, then Spec k[S] is an affine toric variety over k, and we refer to the twists of k[S] as quantum affine toric varieties. We show that every quantum affine toric varieties has a "dense quantum torus", in the sense that it has a localization isomorphic to a quantum torus. We study quantum affine toric varieties and show that many geometric regularity properties survive the deformation process.
In a series of papers, we used full quivers as tools in describing PI-varieties of algebras and providing a complete proof of Belov's solution of Specht's problem for affine algebras over an arbitrary Noetherian ring. In this paper, utilizing ideas from that work, we give a full exposition of Belov's theorem that relatively free affine PI-algebras over an arbitrary field are representable. (Kemer proved the theorem over an infinite field.)
We build on the description of left congruences on an inverse semigroup in terms of the kernel and trace due to Petrich and Rankin. The notion of an inverse kernel for a left congruence is developed. Various properties of both the trace and inverse-kernel are discussed, in particular that both the trace and inverse-kernel maps are onto $\cap$-homomorphisms. The lattice of left congruences is identified as a subset of the direct product of the lattice of congruences on the idempotents and the lattice of full inverse subsemigroups. We use this to describe the lattice of left congruences on the b…
Let $k$ be a field and let $R$ be a left noetherian $k$-algebra. The algebra $R$ satisfies the Dixmier-Moeglin equivalence if the annihilators of irreducible representations are precisely those prime ideals that are locally closed in the ${\rm Spec}(R)$ and if, moreover, these prime ideals are precisely those whose extended centres are algebraic extensions of the base field. We show that if $R$ and $S$ are two left noetherian $k$-algebras with ${\rm dim}_k(R), {\rm dim}_k(S)<|k|$ then if $R$ and $S$ have homeomorphic spectra then $R$ satisfies the Dixmier-Moeglin equivalence if and only if $S$…
We study finite dimensional representations over some Noetherian algebras over a field of characteristic zero. More precisely, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for the category of locally finite dimensional representations to be closed under taking injective hulls and extend results known for group rings and enveloping algebras to Ore extensions, Hopf crossed products and affine Hopf algebras of low Gelfand-Kirillov dimension.
Denote by PSelf(X) (resp., Self(X)) the partial (resp., full) transformation monoid over a set X, and by Sub(V) (resp., End(V)) the collection of all subspaces (resp., endomorphisms) of a vector space V. We prove various results that imply the following: (1) If X has at least two elements, then Self(X) has a semigroup embedding into the dual of Self(Y) iff card(Y) >= 2^card(X). In particular, if X has at least two elements, then there exists no semigroup embedding from Self(X) into the dual of PSelf(X). (2) If V is infinite-dimensional, then there are no embedding from (Sub(V),+) into (Sub(V),…
The affine Schur algebra $\widetilde{S}(n,r)$ (of type A) over a field $K$ is defined to be the endomorphism algebra of the tensor space over the extended affine Weyl group of type $A_{r-1}$. By the affine Schur-Weyl duality it is isomorphic to the image of the representation map of the $\mathcal{U}(\hat{\mathfrak{gl}}_{n})$ action on the tensor space when $K$ is the field of complex numbers. We show that $\widetilde{S}(n,r)$ can be defined in another two equivalent ways. Namely, it is the image of the representation map of the semigroup algebra $K\widetilde{GL}_{n,a}$ (defined in Section \ref…
For the ring of differential operators on a smooth affine algebraic variety $X$ over a field of characteristic zero a finite set of algebra generators and a finite set of defining relations are found explicitly. As a consequence, a finite set of generators and a finite set of defining relations are given for the module $\Der_K(\OO (X))$ of derivations on the algebra $\OO (X)$ of regular functions on the variety $X$. For the variety $X$ which is not necessarily smooth, a set of natural derivations ${\rm der}_K(\OO (X))$ of the algebra $\OO (X)$ and a ring $\gD (\OO (X))$ of natural differential…
This paper contains a survey of some ring-theoretic aspects of quantized coordinate rings, with primary focus on the prime and primitive spectra. For these algebras, the overall structure of the prime spectrum is governed by a partition into strata determined by the action of a suitable group of automorphisms of the algebra. We discuss this stratification in detail, as well as its use in determining the primitive spectrum -- under suitable conditions, the primitive ideals are precisely those prime ideals which are maximal within their strata. The discussion then turns to the global structure o…
By studying certain kind of centralizer algebras of the affine Schur algebra $\widetilde{S}(n,r)$ we show that $\widetilde{S}(n,r)$ is Noetherian and we determine its center. Assuming $n\geq r$, we show that $\widetilde{S}(n+1,r)$ is Morita equivalent to $\widetilde{S}(n,r)$, and the Schur functor is an equivalence under certain conditions.
Let $R$ be a ring and let $\mathcal C$ be a small class of right $R$-modules which is closed under finite direct sums, direct summands, and isomorphisms. Let $\mathcal V (\mathcal C)$ denote a set of representatives of isomorphism classes in $\mathcal C$ and, for any module $M$ in $\mathcal C$, let $[M]$ denote the unique element in $\mathcal V (\mathcal C)$ isomorphic to $M$. Then $\mathcal V (\mathcal C)$ is a reduced commutative semigroup with operation defined by $[M] + [N] = [M \oplus N]$, and this semigroup carries all information about direct-sum decompositions of modules in $\mathcal C…
In formulating a generalized framework to study certain noncommutative algebras naturally arising in representation theory, K. A. Brown asked if every finitely generated Hopf algebra satisfying a polynomial identity was finite over a normal commutative Hopf subalgebra. In this note we show that Radford's biproduct, applied to the enveloping algebra of the Lie superalgebra pl(1,1), provides a noetherian prime counterexample.
Let $R$ be a commutative Noetherian ring and let $\mathcal D(R)$ be its (unbounded) derived category. We show that all compactly generated t-structures in $\mathcal D(R)$ associated to a left bounded filtration by supports of Spec$(R)$ have a heart which is a Grothendieck category. Moreover, we identify all compactly generated t-structures in $\mathcal D(R)$ whose heart is a module category. As geometric consequences for a compactly generated t-structure $(\mathcal{U},\mathcal{U}^\perp [1])$ in the derived category $\mathcal{D}(\mathbb{X})$ of a Noetherian scheme $\mathbb{X}$, we get the follo…
This paper is an attempt to construct a special kind of Hopf pairing $\langle-,-\rangle:H^\bullet\otimes H\rightarrow\Bbbk$. Specifically, $H^\bullet$ and $H$ should be both affine, noetherian and of the same GK-dimension. In addition, some properties of them would be dual to each other. We test the ideas in two steps for all the affine prime regular Hopf algebras $H$ of GK-dimension one: 1) We compute the finite duals $H^\circ$ of them, which are given by generators and relations; 2) the Hopf pairings desired are determined by choosing certain Hopf subalgebras $H^\bullet$ of $H^\circ$, where …
We initiate a unified, axiomatic study of noncommutative algebras R whose prime spectra are, in a natural way, finite unions of commutative noetherian spectra. Our results illustrate how these commutative spectra can be functorially ``sewn together'' to form Spec R. In particular, we construct a bimodule-determined functor Mod Z -> Mod R, for a suitable commutative noetherian ring Z, from which there follows a finite-to-one, continous surjection Spec Z -> Spec R. Algebras satisfying the given axiomatic framework include PI algebras finitely generated over fields, noetherian PI algebras, envelo…
