Constructions are given of Noetherian maximal orders that are finitely presented algebras over a field K, defined by monomial relations. In order to do this, it is shown that the underlying homogeneous information determines the algebraic structure of the algebra. So, it is natural to consider such algebras as semigroup algebras K[S] and to investigate the structure of the monoid S. The relationship between the prime ideals of the algebra and those of the monoid S is one of the main tools. Results analogous to fundamental facts known for the prime spectrum of algebras graded by a finite group are obtained. This is then applied to characterize a large class of prime Noetherian maximal orders that satisfy a polynomial identity, based on a special class of submonoids of polycyclic-by-finite groups. The main results are illustrated with new constructions of concrete classes of finitely presented algebras of this type.
We provide examples of finitely generated noetherian PI algebras for which there is no finite dimensional filtration with a noetherian associated graded ring; thus we answer negatively a question raised by M. Lorenz.
Let $k$ be an uncountable algebraically closed field and let $A$ be a countably generated left Noetherian $k$-algebra. Then we show that $A \otimes_k K$ is left Noetherian for any field extension $K$ of $k$. We conclude that all subfields of the quotient division algebra of a countably generated left Noetherian domain over $k$ are finitely generated extensions of $k$. We give examples which show that $A\otimes_k K$ need not remain left Noetherian if the hypotheses are weakened.
We show that the twisted homogeneous coordinate rings of elliptic curves by infinite order automorphisms have the curious property that every subalgebra is both finitely generated and noetherian. As a consequence, we show that a localisation of a generic Skylanin algebra has the same property.
Let $k$ be a field. We show that a finitely generated simple Goldie $k$-algebra of quadratic growth is noetherian and has Krull dimension 1. Thus a simple algebra of quadratic growth is left noetherian if and only if it is right noetherian. As a special case, we see that if A is a finitely generated simple domain of quadratic growth then A is noetherian and by a result of Stafford every right and left ideal is generated by at most two elements. We conclude by posing questions and giving examples in which we consider what happens when the hypotheses are relaxed.
Resco and Small gave the first example of an affine Noetherian algebra which is not finitely presented. It is shown that their algebra has no finite-dimensional filtrations whose associated graded algebras are Noetherian, affirming their prediction. A modification of their example yields countable fields over which `almost all' (that is, a co-countable continuum of) affine Noetherian algebras lack such a filtration, and an answer to a question suggested by Irving and Small is derived.
Let $K$ be a commutative Noetherian ring with identity, let $A$ be a $K$-algebra, and let $B$ be a subalgebra of $A$ such that $A/B$ is finitely generated as a $K$-module. The main result of the paper is that $A$ is finitely presented (resp. finitely generated) if and only if $B$ is finitely presented (resp. finitely generated). As corollaries we obtain: a subring of finite index in a finitely presented ring is finitely presented; a subalgebra of finite co-dimension in a finitely presented algebra over a field is finitely presented (already shown by Voden in 2009). We also discuss the role of …
Let R be a quotient ring of a commutative coherent regular ring by a finitely generated ideal. Hovey gave a bijection between the set of coherent subcategories of the category of finitely presented R-modules and the set of thick subcategories of the derived category of perfect R-complexes. Using this isomorphism, he proved that every coherent subcategory of finitely presented R-modules is a Serre subcategory. In this paper, it is proved that this holds whenever R is a commutative noetherian ring. This paper also yields a module version of the bijection between the set of localizing subcategori…
We survey noetherian rings $A$ over which the injective hull of every simple module is locally artinian. Then we give a general construction for algebras $A$ that do not have this property. In characteristic 0, we also complete the classification of down-up algebras with this property.
We study centralizers of elements in domains. We generalize a result of the author and Small, showing that if $A$ is a finitely generated noetherian domain and $a\in A$ is not algebraic over the extended centre of $A$, then the centralizer of $a$ has Gelfand-Kirillov dimension at most one less than the Gelfand-Kirillov dimension of $A$. In the case that $A$ is a finitely generated noetherian domain of GK dimension 3 over the complex numbers, we show that the centralizer of an element a $A$ that is not algebraic over the extended centre of $A$ satisfies a polynomial identity.
In the past, it has been shown that the Leavitt path algebra $L(E)=L_K(E)$ of a graph $E$ over a field $K$ is left and right noetherian if and only if the graph $E$ is finite and no cycle of $E$ has an exit. If $Q(E)=Q_K(E)$ denotes the regular algebra over $L(E),$ we prove that these conditions are further equivalent with any of the following: $L(E)$ contains no infinite set of orthogonal idempotents, $L(E)$ has finite uniform dimension, $L(E)$ is directly finite, $Q(E)$ is directly finite, $Q(E)$ is unit-regular, and a few more equivalences. In addition, if the involution on $K$ is positive …
We initiate a unified, axiomatic study of noncommutative algebras R whose prime spectra are, in a natural way, finite unions of commutative noetherian spectra. Our results illustrate how these commutative spectra can be functorially ``sewn together'' to form Spec R. In particular, we construct a bimodule-determined functor Mod Z -> Mod R, for a suitable commutative noetherian ring Z, from which there follows a finite-to-one, continous surjection Spec Z -> Spec R. Algebras satisfying the given axiomatic framework include PI algebras finitely generated over fields, noetherian PI algebras, envelo…
In this paper, we show that the categories of finitely generated projective $\mathbb{B}$-modules and $\mathbb{F}_\infty$-modules with morphisms being (splittable) injections are not locally Noetherian. This provides another instance of the fact that these generalized fields have strange homological behavior.
The classical theorem of Weitzenboeck states that the algebra of invariants of a single unipotent transformation $g$ in $GL_m(K)$ acting on the polynomial algebra $K[x_1,...,x_m]$ over a field $K$ of characteristic 0 is finitely generated. Recently the author and C.K. Gupta have started the study of the algebra of $g$-invariants of relatively free algebras of rank $m$ in varieties of associative algebras. They have shown that the algebra of invariants is not finitely generated if the variety contains the algebra $UT_2(K)$ of $2\times 2$ upper triangular matrices. The main result of the present…
We classify all tilting and cotilting classes over commutative noetherian rings in terms of descending sequences of specialization closed subsets of the Zariski spectrum. Consequently, all resolving subcategories of finitely generated modules of bounded projective dimension are classified. We also relate our results to Hochster's conjecture on the existence of finitely generated maximal Cohen-Macaulay modules.
This note concerns the still open question of representability of Noetherian PI-algebras. Extending a result of Rowen and Small (with an observation of Bergman) that every finitely generated module over a commutative Noetherian ring containing a field is representable, we provide a representability machinery for a Noetherian PI-algebra $R$ containing a field, which includes the case that $R$ is finite (as a module) over a commutative subalgebra isomorphic to $R/N$. We construct a family of non-representable PI-algebras demonstrating the sharpness of these results, as well as of some well known…
For a Grothendieck category having a noetherian generator, we prove that there are only finitely many minimal atoms. This is a noncommutative analogue of the fact that every noetherian scheme has only finitely many irreducible components. It is also shown that each minimal atom is represented by a compressible object.
In this paper we study (non-commutative) rings $R$ over which every finitely generated left module is a direct sum of cyclic modules (called left FGC-rings). The commutative case was a well-known problem studied and solved in 1970s by various authors. It is shown that a Noetherian local left FGC-ring is either an Artinian principal left ideal ring, or an Artinian principal right ideal ring, or a prime ring over which every two-sided ideal is principal as a left and a right ideal. In particular, it is shown that a Noetherian local duo-ring $R$ is a left FGC-ring if and only if $R$ is a right FG…
We introduce FI-algebras over a commutative ring $K$ and the category of FI-modules over an FI-algebra. Such a module may be considered as a family of invariant modules over compatible varying $K$-algebras. FI-modules over $K$ correspond to the well studied constant coefficient case where every algebra equals $K$. We show that a finitely generated FI-module over a noetherian polynomial FI-algebra is a noetherian module. This is established by introducing OI-modules. We prove that every submodule of a finitely generated free OI-module over a noetherian polynomial OI-algebra has a finite Gröbner…
In a series of papers \cite{BRV1}, \cite{BRV2}, \cite{BRV3} we introduced full quivers and pseudo-quivers of representations of algebras, and used them as tools in describing PI-varieties of algebras. In this paper we apply them to obtain a complete proof of Belov's solution of Specht's problem for affine algebras over an arbitrary Noetherian ring. The inductive step relies on a theorem that enables one to find a "$\bar q$-characteristic coefficient-absorbing polynomial in each T-ideal $Γ$," i.e., a non-identity of the representable algebra $A$ arising from $Γ$, whose ideal of evaluations in $…
We obtain a complete structural characterization of Cohn-Leavitt algebras over no-exit objects as graded involutive algebras. Corollaries of this result include graph-theoretic conditions characterizing when a Leavitt path algebra is a directed union of (graded) matricial algebras over the underlying field and over the algebra of Laurent polynomials and when the monoid of isomorphism classes of finitely generated projective modules is atomic and cancellative. We introduce the non-unital generalizations of graded analogues of noetherian and artinian rings, graded locally noetherian and graded l…
The following dichotomy is established: A finitely generated, complex Dedekind domain that is not commutative is simple. Weaker versions of this dichotomy are proved for Dedekind prime rings and hereditary noetherian prime rings.
A cohomological support, Supp_A(M), is defined for finitely generated modules M over an left noetherian ring R, with respect to a ring A of central cohomology operations on the derived category of R-modules. It is proved that if the A-module Ext^R(M,M) is noetherian and Ext_i^R(M,R)=0 for i>>0, then every closed subset of Supp_A(M) is the support of some finitely generated R-module. This theorem specializes to known realizability results for varieties of modules over group algebras, over local complete intersections, and over finite dimensional algebras over a field. The theorem is also used t…
We prove an equivalent condition for the existence of a link between prime ideals in terms of the structure of a certain cohomology module. We use this formulation to answer an open question regarding the nature of module extensions over one sided noetherian rings. We apply the techniques developed in this paper to the local link structure of prime ideals of small homological height and examine when certain noetherian rings satisfy the density condition.
We prove that the module categories of Noether algebras (i.e., algebras module finite over a noetherian center) and affine noetherian PI algebras over a field enjoy the following product property: Whenever a direct product $\prod_{n \in \Bbb N} M_n$ of finitely generated indecomposable modules $M_n$ is a direct sum of finitely generated objects, there are repeats among the isomorphism types of the $M_n$. The rings with this property satisfy the pure semisimplicity conjecture which stipulates that vanishing one-sided pure global dimension entails finite representation type.
We observe that a finitely generated algebraic algebra R (over a field) is finite dimensional if and only if the associated graded ring grR is right noetherian, if and only if grR has right Krull dimension, if and only if grR satisfies a polynomial identity.
Let $B$ be a finitely generated algebra over a field $k$. Then $B$ is called a Jacobson algebra if every semiprime ideal of $B$ is semiprimitive. We will discuss several conditions, all involving the commutant of simple $B$-modules, which imply that $B$ is Jacobson. In particular, we will recover the well-known result that every finitely generated almost commutative algebra is Jacobson. The same holds true for $\mathbb{N}$-filtered $k$-algebras $B$ with a locally finite filtration such that the associated graded $k$-algebra is left-noetherian.
We introduce the notion of independent sequences with respect to a monomial order by using the least terms of polynomials vanishing at the sequence. Our main result shows that the Krull dimension of a Noetherian ring is equal to the supremum of the length of independent sequences. The proof has led to other notions of independent sequences, which have interesting applications. For example, we can characterize the maximum number of analytically independent elements in an arbitrary ideal of a local ring and that dim B is not greater than dim A if B is a subalgebra of A and A is a (not necessaril…
Recent work using the model theory of differentially closed fields to answer questions having to do with the Dixmier-Moeglin equivalence for (noncommutatve) finitely generated noetherian algebras, and for (commutative) finitely generated Poisson algebras, is here surveyed, with an emphasis on the model-theoretic and differential-algebraic-geometric antecedents.
We investigate homological and ring-theoretic properties of universal quantum linear groups that coact on Artin-Schelter regular algebras A(n) of global dimension 2, especially with central homological codeterminant (or central quantum determinant). As classified by Zhang, the algebras A(n) are connected \N-graded algebras that are finitely generated by n indeterminants of degree 1, subject to one quadratic relation. In the case when the homological codeterminant of the coaction is trivial, we show that the quantum group of interest, defined independently by Manin and by Dubois-Violette and La…
Let R be a commutative Noetherian local ring. We show that R is Gorenstein if and only if every finitely generated R-module can be embedded in a finitely generated R-module of finite projective dimension. This extends a result of Auslander and Bridger to rings of higher Krull dimension, and it also improves a result due to Foxby where the ring is assumed to be Cohen-Macaulay.
