In 1969 Lindenstrauss and Rosenthal showed that if a Banach space is isomorphic to a complemented subspace of an L_p-space, then it is either a script L_p-space or isomorphic to a Hilbert space. This is the motivation of this paper where we study non--Hilbertian complemented operator subspaces of non commutative L_p-spaces and show that this class is much richer than in the commutative case. We investigate the local properties of some new classes of operator spaces for every $2<p< \infty$ which can be considered as operator space analogues of the Rosenthal sequence spaces from Banach space theory, constructed in 1970. Under the usual conditions on the defining sequence sigma we prove that most of these spaces are operator script L_p-spaces, not completely isomorphic to previously known such spaces. However it turns out that some column and row versions of our spaces are not operator script L_p-spaces and have a rather complicated local structure which implies that the Lindenstrauss--Rosenthal alternative does not carry over to the non-commutative case.
The main purpose of this paper is the study of a~new class of summing multilinear operators acting from the product of Banach lattices with some nontrivial lattice convexity. A~mixed Pietsch-Maurey-Rosenthal type factorization theorem for these operators is proved under weaker convexity requirements than the ones that are needed in the Maurey-Rosenthal factorization through products of $L^q$-spaces. A~by-product of our factorization is an extension of multilinear operators defined by a~$q$-concavity type property to a~product of special Banach function lattices which inherit some lattice-geome…
The Maurey-Rosenthal theorem states that each bounded and linear operator T from a quasi normed space E into some L_p(ν) which satisfies a certain vector-valued inequality even allows a weighted norm inequality. Continuing the work of Garcia Cuerva and Rubio de Francia we give several scalar and vector-valued variants of this fundamental result within the framework of quasi K"othe function spaces over measure spaces.
We introduce and investigate a class of non-separable tree-like Banach spaces. As a consequence, we prove that we can not achieve a satisfactory extension of Rosenthal's $\ell_1$-theorem to spaces of the type $\ell_1(κ)$, for $κ$ an uncountable cardinal.
In article is constructed a wide couple of pairwice non-isomorphic separable superreflexive Banach spaces E that are subspace homogeneous. Their conjugates are quotient homogeneous. None of this couple neither isomorphic to its Cartesian square nor has the approximation property. At the same time, any such E is isomorphic to E+ E+ W for some Banach space W and, hence, solves the Schroeder - Bernstein problem.
Let $E$ be a rearrangement invariant (r.i.) function space on $[0,1]$, and let $Z_E$ consist of all measurable functions $f$ on $(0,\infty)$ such that $f^*χ_{[0,1]}\in E$ and $f^*χ_{[1,\infty)}\in L^2$. We reveal close connections between properties of the generalized Rosenthal's space, corresponding to the space $Z_E$, and the behaviour of independent symmetrically distributed random variables in $E$. The results obtained are applied to consider the problem of the existence of isomorphisms between r.i.\ spaces on $[0,1]$ and $(0,\infty)$. Exploiting particular properties of disjoint sequences…
We give an example of a compact metric space $K$, an open dense subset $U$ of $K$, and a sequence $(f_n)$ in $C(K)$ which is pointwise convergent to a non-continuous function on $K$, such that for every $u \in U$ there exists $n \in \N$ with $f_n(u)=f_m(u)$ for all $m \geq n$, yet $(f_n)$ is equivalent to the unit vector basis of the James quasi-reflexive space of order 1. Thus $c_0$ does not embed isomorphically in the closed linear span $[f_n]$ of $(f_n)$. This answers in negative a question asked by H. Haydon, E. Odell and H. Rosenthal.
We study the problem of extension and lifting of operators belonging to certain operator ideals, as well as that of their associated polynomials and holomorphic functions. Our results provide a characterization of $\mathcal{L}_1$ and $\mathcal{L}_{\infty}$-spaces that includes and extends those of Lindenstrauss-Rosenthal \cite{LR} using compact operators and González-Gutiérrez \cite{GG} using compact polynomials. We display several examples to show the difference between extending and lifting compact (resp. weakly compact, unconditionally convergent, separable and Rosenthal) operators to opera…
We consider a normalized basis in a Banach space with the following property: any normalized block sequence of the basis has a subsequence equivalent to the basis. We show that under uniformity or other natural assumptions, a basis with this property is equivalent to the unit vector basis of $c_0$ or $\ell_p$. We also address an analogous problem for spreading models.
The goal of this note is two-fold. First we present a brief overview of "weak" embeddings, with a special emphasis on sign embeddings which were introduced by H. P. Rosenthal in the early 1980s. We also discuss the related notion of narrow operators, which was introduced by A. Plichko and M. Popov in 1990. We give examples of applications of these notions in the geometry of Banach spaces and in other areas of analysis. We also present some open problems. In the second part we prove that Rosenthal's celebrated characterization of narrow operators on $L_1$ is also true for operators on $L_2$. Th…
We prove sharp maximal inequalities for $L^q$-valued stochastic integrals with respect to any Hilbert space-valued local martingale. Our proof relies on new Burkholder-Rosenthal type inequalities for martingales taking values in an $L^q$-space.
Let X be a complex Banach space of dimension at least 2, and let S be a multiplicative semigroup of operators on X such that the rank of AB - BA is at most 1 for all pairs {A,B} in S. We prove that S has a non-trivial invariant subspace provided it is not commutative. As a consequence we show that S is triangularizable if it consists of polynomially compact operators. This generalizes results from [H. Radjavi, P. Rosenthal, From local to global triangularization, J. Funct. Anal. 147 (1997), 443-456] and [G. Cigler, R. Drnovšek, D. Kokol-Bukovšek, T. Laffey, M. Omladič, H. Radjavi, P. Rosenthal…
We show that a reflexive subspace of the predual of a von Neumann algebra embeds into a noncommutative Lp space for some p>1. This is a noncommutative version of Rosenthal's result for commutative Lp spaces. Similarly for 1 < q < 2, an infinite dimensional subspace X of a noncommutative Lq space either contains lq or embeds in Lp for some q < p < 2. The novelty in the noncommutative setting is a double sided change of density.
Motivated by Rosenthal's famous $l^1$-dichotomy in Banach spaces, Haydon's theorem, and additionally by recent works on tame dynamical systems, we introduce the class of tame locally convex spaces. This is a natural locally convex analogue of Rosenthal Banach spaces (for which any bounded sequence contains a weak Cauchy subsequence). Our approach is based on a bornology of tame subsets which in turn is closely related to eventual fragmentability. This leads, among others, to the following results: $\bullet$ extending Haydon's characterization of Rosenthal Banach spaces, by showing that a lcs $…
We calculate ordinal $L_p$ index defined in "An ordinal L_p index for Banach spaces with an application to complemented subspaces of L_p" authored by J. Bourgain, H. P. Rosenthal and G. Schechtman, for Rosenthal's space $X_p$, $\ell_p$ and $\ell_2$. We show a subspace of $L_p$ $(2 < p < \infty)$ non isomorphic to $\ell_2$ embeds in $\ell_p$ if and only if its ordinal index is minimum possible. We also give a sufficient condition for a $\mathcal{L}_p$ subspace of $\ell_p\oplus\ell_2$ to be isomorphic to $X_p$.
We continue the study of Uniformly Finitely Extensible Banach spaces (in short, UFO) initiated in Moreno-Plichko, \emph{On automorphic Banach spaces}, Israel J. Math. 169 (2009) 29--45 and Castillo-Plichko, \emph{Banach spaces in various positions.} J. Funct. Anal. 259 (2010) 2098-2138. We show that they have the Uniform Approximation Property of Pełczyński and Rosenthal and are compactly extensible. We will also consider their connection with the automorphic space problem of Lindenstrauss and Rosenthal --do there exist automorphic spaces other than $c_0(I)$ and $\ell_2(I)$?-- showing that a s…
We show that a minor refinement of the Bourgain-Rosenthal construction of a Banach space without the Radon-Nikodym property which contains no bounded $δ$-trees yields a space with the Daugavet property and the Schur property. Using this example we answer some open questions on the structure of such spaces; in particular we show that the Daugavet property is not inherited by ultraproducts.
We study several classes of indecomposable representations of quivers on infinite-dimensional Hilbert spaces and their relation. Many examples are constructed using strongly irreducible operators. Some problems in operator theory are rephrased in terms of representations of quivers. We shall show two kinds of constructions of quite non-trivial indecomposable Hilbert representations of the Kronecker quiver such that their endomorphism rings are trivial, which are called transitive. One is a perturbation of a weighted shift operator by a rank-one operator. The other one is a modification of an u…
It is shown that for each separable Banach space $X$ not admitting $\ell_1$ as a spreading model there is a space $Y$ having $X$ as a quotient and not admitting any $\ell_p$ for $1 \leq p < \infty$ or $c_0$ as a spreading model. We also include the solution to a question of W.B. Johnson and H.P. Rosenthal on the existence of a separable space not admitting as a quotient any space with separable dual.
Let $1\le p\le q<\infty$ and let $X$ be a $p$-convex Banach function space over a $σ$-finite measure $μ$. We combine the structure of the spaces $L^p(μ)$ and $L^q(ξ)$ for constructing the new space $S_{X_p}^{\,q}(ξ)$, where $ξ$ is a probability Radon measure on a certain compact set associated to $X$. We show some of its properties, and the relevant fact that every $q$-summing operator $T$ defined on $X$ can be continuously (strongly) extended to $S_{X_p}^{\,q}(ξ)$. This result turns out to be a mixture of the Pietsch and Maurey-Rosenthal factorization theorems, which provide (strong) factoriz…
Two methods of constructing infinitely many isomorphically distinct $\Cal L_p$-spaces have been published. In this article we show that these constructions yield very different spaces and in the process develop methods for dealing with these spaces from the isomorphic viewpoint. We use these methods to give a complete isomorphic classification of the spaces $R_p^α$ constructed by Bourgain, Rosenthal, and Schechtman and to show that $X_p\otimes X_p$ is not isomorphic to a complemented subspace of any $R_p^α.$
James Tree Space ($\mathcal{JT}$), introduced by R. James, is the first Banach space constructed having non-separable conjugate and not containing $\ell^1$. James actually proved that every infinite dimensional subspace of $\mathcal{JT}$ contains a Hilbert space, which implies the $\ell^1$ non-embedding. In this expository article, we present a direct proof of the $\ell^1$ non-embedding, using Rosenthal's $\ell^1$- Theorem and some measure theoretic arguments, namely Riesz's Representation Theorem.
A recent result of Freeman, Odell, Sari, and Zheng states that whenever a separable Banach space not containing $\ell_1$ has the property that all asymptotic models generated by weakly null sequences are equivalent to the unit vector basis of $c_0$ then the space is Asymptotic $c_0$. We show that if we replace $c_0$ with $\ell_1$ then this result is no longer true. Moreover, a stronger result of B. Maurey - H. P. Rosenthal type is presented, namely, there exists a reflexive Banach space with an unconditional basis admitting $\ell_1$ as a unique asymptotic model whereas any subsequence of the b…
Let $\M$ be a semi-finite von Neumann algebra equipped with a faithful normal trace $τ$. We study the subspace structures of non-commutative Lorentz spaces $L_{p,q}(\M, τ)$, extending results of Carothers and Dilworth to the non-commutative settings. In particular, we show that, under natural conditions on indices, $\ell_p$ can not be embedded into $L_{p,q}(\M, τ)$. As applications, we prove that for $0<p<\infty$ with $p \neq 2$ then $\ell_p$ cannot be strongly embedded into $L_p(\M,τ)$. Thus providing a non-commutative extension of a result of Kalton for $0<p<1$ and a result of Rosenthal for …
We prove the noncommutative Davis decomposition for the column Hardy space $\H_p^c$ for all $0<p\leq 1$. A new feature of our Davis decomposition is a simultaneous control of $\H_1^c$ and $\H_q^c$ norms for any noncommutative martingale in $\H_1^c \cap \H_q^c$ when $q\geq 2$. As applications, we show that the Burkholder/Rosenthal inequality holds for bounded martingales in a noncommutative symmetric space associated with a function space $E$ that is either an interpolation of the couple $(L_p, L_2)$ for some $1<p<2$ or is an interpolation of the couple $(L_2, L_q)$ for some $2<q<\infty$. We al…
The first part of the paper is inspired by a theorem of H. Rosenthal, that if an operator on $L_1[0,1]$ satisfies the assumption that for each measurable set $A \subseteq [0,1]$ the restriction $T \bigl|_{L_1(A)}$ is not an isomorphic embedding, then the operator is narrow. (Here $L_1(A) = \bigl\{x \in L_1: \,\, {\rm supp} \, x \subseteq A \bigr\}$.) This leads to a natural question of finding mildest possible assumptions for operators on a given space $X$, which will imply that the operator is narrow. We find a partial answer to this question for operators on $L_p(0,1)$ with $1<p<2$. Namely w…
We show that there are $2^{2^{\aleph_0}}$ different closed ideals in the Banach algebra $L(L_p(0,1))$, $1<p\not= 2<\infty$. This solves a problem in A. Pietsch's 1978 book "Operator Ideals". The proof is quite different from other methods of producing closed ideals in the space of bounded operators on a Banach space; in particular, the ideals are not contained in the strictly singular operators and yet do not contain projections onto subspaces that are non Hilbertian. We give a criterion for a space with an unconditional basis to have $2^{2^{\aleph_0}}$ closed ideals in terms of the existence …
Parallel to the study of finite dimensional Banach spaces, there is a growing interest in the corresponding local theory of operator spaces. We define a family of Hilbertian operator spaces H_n^k,0< k < n+1, generalizing the row and column Hilbert spaces R_n,C_n and show that an atomic subspace X of B(H) which is the range of a contractive projection on B(H) is isometrically completely contractive to a direct sum of the H_n^k and Cartan factors of types 1 to 4. In particular, for finite dimensional X, this answers a question posed by Oikhberg and Rosenthal. Explicit in the proof is a classific…
For a topological group G, we show that a compact metric G-space is tame if and only if it can be linearly represented on a separable Banach space which does not contain an isomorphic copy of $l_1$ (we call such Banach spaces, Rosenthal spaces). With this goal in mind we study tame dynamical systems and their representations on Banach spaces.
We introduce a chain condition (bishop), defined for operators acting on C(K)-spaces, which is intermediate between weak compactness and having weakly compactly generated range. It is motivated by Pełczyński's characterisation of weakly compact operators on C(K)-spaces. We prove that if K is extremally disconnected and X is a Banach space then an operator T : C(K) -> X is weakly compact if and only if it satisfies (bishop) if and only if the representing vector measure of T satisfies an analogous chain condition. As a tool for proving the above-mentioned result, we derive a topological counter…
In this paper we consider weighted Morrey spaces ${\mathcal M}_{λ, {\mathcal F}}^p(w)$ adapted to a family of cubes ${\mathcal F}$, with norm $$\|f\|_{{\mathcal M}_{λ, {\mathcal F}}^p(w)}:=\sup_{Q\in {\mathcal F}}\left(\frac{1}{|Q|^λ}\int_Q|f|^pw\right)^{1/p},$$ and the question we deal with is whether a Muckenhoupt-type condition characterizes the boundedness of the Hardy--Littlewood maximal operator on ${\mathcal M}_{λ, {\mathcal F}}^p(w)$. In the case of the global Morrey spaces (when ${\mathcal F}$ is the family of all cubes in ${\mathbb R}^n$) this question is still open. In the case of t…
To every Banach space V we associate a compact right topological affine semigroup E(V). We show that a separable Banach space V is Asplund if and only if E(V) is metrizable, and it is Rosenthal (i.e. it does not contain an isomorphic copy of $l_1$) if and only if E(V) is a Rosenthal compactum. We study representations of compact right topological semigroups in E(V). In particular, representations of tame and HNS-semigroups arise naturally as enveloping semigroups of tame and HNS (hereditarily non-sensitive) dynamical systems, respectively. As an application we obtain a generalization of a theo…
We study some structural aspects of the subspaces of the non-commutative (Haagerup) L_p-spaces associated with a general (non necessarily semi-finite) von Neumann algebra A. If a subspace X of L_p(A) contains uniformly the spaces \ell_p^n, n>= 1, it contains an almost isometric, almost 1-complemented copy of \ell_p. If X contains uniformly the finite dimensional Schatten classes S_p^n, it contains their \ell_p-direct sum too. We obtain a version of the classical Kadec-Pel czynski dichotomy theorem for L_p-spaces, p>= 2. We also give operator space versions of these results. The proofs are base…
This work introduces the concept of an M-complete approximate identity (M-cai) for a given operator subspace X of an operator space Y. M-cai's generalize central approximate identities in ideals in $C^*$-algebras, for it is proved that if X admits an M-cai in Y, then X is a complete M-ideal in Y. It is proved, using ``special'' M-cai's, that if $\cal J$ is a nuclear ideal in a $C^*$-algebra $\cal A$, then $\cal J$ is completely complemented in Y for any (isomorphically) locally reflexive operator space Y with $\cal J \subset Y \subset \cal A$ and $Y/\cal J$ separable. (This generalizes the pre…
In this paper we investigate the boundedness of classical operators, namely the Hardy-Littlewood maximal operator, fractional integral operators, and Calderon-Zygmund operators, on generalized weighted Morrey spaces and generalized weighted weak Morrey spaces. We prove that the operators are bounded on these spaces, under certain assumptions.
This paper is a sequel to [6]. In that paper we transferred the discussions in [1] and [13] concerning almost invariant half-spaces for operators on complex Banach spaces to the context of operators on Hilbert space, and we gave easier proofs of the main results in [1] and [13]. In the present paper we discuss consequences of the above-mentioned results for the matricial structure of operators on Hilbert space.
Let $S(\mathbb{D})$ be the collection of all holomorphic self-maps on $\mathbb{D}$ of the complex plane $\mathbb{C}$, and $C_φ$ the composition operator induced by $φ\in S(\mathbb{D})$. We obtain that there are no hypercyclic composition operators on the little Bloch space $\mathcal{B}_0$ and the Besov space $B_p$.
The famous Rosenthal-Lacey theorem asserts that for each infinite compact space $K$ the Banach space $C(K)$ admits a quotient which is either a copy of $c_{0}$ or $\ell_{2}$. The aim of the paper is to study a natural variant of this result for the space $C_{p}(K)$ of continuous real-valued maps on $K$ with the pointwise topology. Following famous Josefson-Nissenzweig theorem for infinite-dimensional Banach spaces we introduce a corresponding property (called Josefson-Nissenzweig property, briefly, the JNP) for $C_{p}$-spaces. We prove: For a Tychonoff space $X$ the space $C_p(X)$ satisfies th…
We consider fractional powers of non-densely defined non-negative operators in Banach spaces defined by means of the Balakrishnan operator. Under mild assumptions on the operator we show that the fractional powers can partially be obtained by a generalised Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator for a Bessel-type differential equation.
We study the weighted composition operators between the Lipschitz space and the space of bounded functions on the set of vertices of an infinite tree. We characterized the boundedness, the compactness, and the boundedness from below of weighted composition operators. We also determine the isometric weighted composition operators.
A Wiener-Hopf operator on a Banach space of functions on R+ is a bounded operator T such that P^+S_{-a}TS_a=T, for every positive a, where S_a is the operator of translation by a. We obtain a representation theorem for the Wiener-Hopf operators on a large class of functions on R+ with values in a separable Hilbert space.
In this paper we consider composition operators on Harmonic-Bloch type spaces and we compute the spectrum of composition operators. Also, we characterize isometric composition operators on harmonic Bloch type spaces.
We consider a generalization of Hausdorff operators on Lebesgue spaces and under natural conditions prove that such an operator is not a Riesz operator provided it is non-zero. In particular, it cannot be represented as a sum of a quasinilpotent and compact operators.
Some identities for noncommutative perspectives of operator monotone functions in Hilbert spaces aregiven. Applications for weighted operator geometric mean and relative operator entropy are also provided.
Following several papers in the prior literature, we study the relationship between order bounded operators, topologically bounded operators and topologically continuous operators. Our main contribution is two folded: (i) we provide a set of counterexamples to illustrate several extant results in the literature; (ii) we give conditions for the space of order bounded operators to coincide with the space of topologically bounded operators as well as conditions for these two spaces to coincide with the space of topologically continuous operators.
We give a few observations on different types of bounded operators on a topological vector space X and their relations with compact operators on X. In particular, we investigate when these bounded operators coincide with compact operators. We also consider similar types of bounded bilinear mappings between topological vector spaces. Some properties of tensor product operators between locally convex spaces are established. In the last part of the paper we deal with operators on topological Riesz spaces.
