In this paper we show an explicit polynomial in Q[x] that has Galois group SL2(F16), filling in a gap in the tables of Juergen Klueners and Gunther Malle. The computation of this polynomial uses modular forms and their Galois representations.
We investigate some Galois groups of linearized polynomials over fields such as $\mathbb{F}_q(t)$. The space of roots of such a polynomial is a module for its Galois group. We present a realization of the symmetric powers of this module, as a subspace of the splitting field of another linearized polynomial.
When monic integral polynomials of degree $n \geq 2$ are ordered by the maximum of the absolute value of their coefficients, the Hilbert irreducibility theorem implies that asymptotically 100% are irreducible and have Galois group isomorphic to $S_n$. In particular, amongst such polynomials whose coefficients are bounded by $B$ in absolute value, asymptotically $(1+o(1))(2B+1)^n$ are irreducible and have Galois group $S_n$. When $G$ is a proper transitive subgroup of $S_n$, however, the asymptotic count of polynomials with Galois group $G$ has been determined only in very few cases. Here, we s…
We realize Frobenius conjugacy classes in Galois groups of certain $q$-polynomials over $\mathbb{F}_q(t)$ using specific degree 1 ideals. We combine this with methods from elementary linear algebra and group theory to realize transvections in some linear Galois groups. This enables the Galois group to be identified as a known classical group in several reasonably general cases.
We prove that the arboreal Galois representations attached to certain unicritical polynomials have finite index in an infinite wreath product of cyclic groups, and we prove surjectivity for some small degree examples, including a new family of quadratic polynomials. To do this, we use a combination of local techniques including the Chabauty-Coleman method and the Mordell-Weil sieve.
For each of the groups PSL2(F25), PSL2(F32), PSL2(F49), PGL2(F25), and PGL2(F27), we display the first explicitly known polynomials over Q having that group as Galois group. Each polynomial is related to a Galois representation associated to a modular form. We indicate how computations with modular Galois representations were used to obtain these polynomials. For each polynomial, we also indicate how to use Serre's conjectures to determine the modular form giving rise to the related Galois representation.
We present a family of algorithms for computing the Galois group of a polynomial defined over a $p$-adic field. Apart from the "naive" algorithm, these are the first general algorithms for this task. As an application, we compute the Galois groups of all totally ramified extensions of $\mathbb{Q}_2$ of degrees 18, 20 and 22, tables of which are available online.
For real number $α,$ Generalised Laguerre Polynomials (GLP) is a family of polynomials defined by \begin{align*} L_n^{(α)}(x)=(-1)^n\displaystyle\sum_{j=0}^{n}\binom{n+α}{n-j}\frac{(-x)^j}{j!}. \end{align*}These orthogonal polynomials are extensively studied in Numerical Analysis and Mathematical Physics. In 1926, Schur initiated the study of algebraic properties of these polynomials. We consider the Galois group of Generalised Laguerre Polynomials $ L_n^{(\frac{1}{2}+u)}(x^2)$ when $u$ is a negative integer.
Given a polynomial f of degree d defined over a complete local field, we construct a biholomorphic change of variables defined in a neighbourhood of infinity which transforms the action z->f(z) to the multiplicative action z->z^d. The relation between this construction and the Bottcher coordinate in complex polynomial dynamics is similar to the relation between the complex uniformization of elliptic curves, and Tate's p-adic uniformization. Specifically, this biholomorphism is Galois equivariant, reducing certain questions about the Galois theory of preimages by f to questions about multiplica…
We show that the Galois group of a random monic polynomial %of degree $d>12$ with integer coefficients between $-N$ and $N$ is NOT $S_d$ with probability $\ll \frac{\log^{Ω(d)}N}{N}.$ Conditionally on NOTbeing the full symmetric group, we have a hierarchy of possibilities each of which has polylog probability of occurring. These results also apply to random polynomials with only a subset of the coefficients allowed to vary. This settles a question going back to 1936.
Using the theory of Newton Polygons, we formulate a simple criterion for the Galois group of a polynomial to be ``large.'' For a fixed $α\in \Q - \Z_{<0}$, Filaseta and Lam have shown that the $n$th degree Generalized Laguerre Polynomial $L_n^{(α)}(x) = \sum_{j=0}^n \binom{n+α}{n-j}(-x)^j/j!$ is irreducible for all large enough $n$. We use our criterion to show that, under these conditions, the Galois group of $\La$ is either the alternating or symmetric group on $n$ letters, generalizing results of Schur for $α=0,1$.
For every nonconstant polynomial $f\in\mathbb Q[x]$, let $Φ_{4,f}$ denote the fourth dynatomic polynomial of $f$. We determine here the structure of the Galois group and the degrees of the irreducible factors of $Φ_{4,f}$ for every quadratic polynomial $f$. As an application we prove new results related to a uniform boundedness conjecture of Morton and Silverman. In particular we show that if $f$ is a quadratic polynomial, then, for more than $39\%$ of all primes $p$, $f$ does not have a point of period four in $\mathbb Q_p$.
Let $L(x)$ be any $q$-linearized polynomial with coefficients in $\mathbb{F}_q$, of degree $q^n$. We consider the Galois group of $L(x)+tx$ over $\mathbb{F}_q(t)$, where $t$ is transcendental over $\mathbb{F}_q$. We prove that when $n$ is a prime, the Galois group is always $GL(n,q)$, except when $L(x)=x^{q^n}$. Equivalently, we prove that the arithmetic monodromy group of $L(x)/x$ is $GL(n,q)$.
Let~$E$ be a Hilbertian field of characteristic~$0$. R.W.K. Odoni conjectured that for every positive integer~$n$ there exists a polynomial~$f\in E[X]$ of degree~$n$ such that each iterate~$f^{\circ{k}}$ of~$f$ is irreducible and the Galois group of the splitting field of~$f^{\circ k}$ is isomorphic to the automorphism group of a regular,~$n$-branching tree of height~$k.$ We prove this conjecture when~$E$ is a number field.
This article studies the Galois groups that arise from division points of the lemniscate. We compute these Galois groups two ways: first, by class field theory, and second, by proving the irreducibility of lemnatomic polynomials, which are analogs of cyclotomic polynomials. We also discuss Abel's theorem on the lemniscate and explain how lemnatomic polynomials relate to Chebyshev polynomials.
Let $φ_p(z)=(z-1)^p+2-ζ_p$, where $ζ_p\in\bar{\mathbb{Q}}$ is a primitive $p$-th root of unity for some odd prime $p$. Building on previous work, we show that the $n$-th iterate $φ_p^n(z)$ has Galois group $[C_p]^n$, an iterated wreath product of cyclic groups, whenever $p$ is not a Wieferich prime.
Let T_{n,k}(X) be the characteristic polynomial of the n-th Hecke operator acting on the space of cusp forms of weight k for the full modular group. We show that if there exists n>1 such that T_{n,k}(X) is irreducible and has the full symmetric group as Galois group, then the same is true of T_{p,k}(X) for all primes p.
We compute the first explicit polynomials with Galois groups $G=PΓL_3(4)$, $PGL_3(4)$, $PSL_3(4)$ and $PSL_5(2)$ over $\mathbb{Q}(t)$. Furthermore we compute the first examples of totally real polynomials with Galois groups $PGL_2(11)$, $PSL_3(3)$, $M_{22}$ and $Aut(M_{22})$ over $\mathbb{Q}$. All these examples make use of families of covers of the projective line ramified over four or more points, and therefore use techniques of explicit computations of Hurwitz spaces. Similar techniques were used previously e.g. by Malle, Couveignes, Granboulan and Hallouin. Unlike previous examples, howeve…
Computational Galois theory, in particular the problem of computing the Galois group of a given polynomial is a very old problem. Currently, the best algorithmic solution is Stauduhar's method. Computationally, one of the key challenges in the application of Stauduhar's method is to find, for a given pair of groups H<G a G-relative H-invariant, that is a multivariate polynomial F that is H-invariant, but not G-invariant. While generic, theoretical methods are known to find such F, in general they yield impractical answers. We give a general method for computing invariants of large degree which…
Let $K$ be a number field with ring of integers $\mathcal O_K$, and let $\{f_k\}_{k\in \mathbb N}\subseteq \mathcal O_K[x]$ be a sequence of monic polynomials such that for every $n\in \mathbb N$, the composition $f^{(n)}=f_1\circ f_2\circ\ldots\circ f_n$ is irreducible. In this paper we show that if the size of the Galois group of $f^{(n)}$ is large enough (in a precise sense) as a function of $n$, then the set of primes $\mathfrak p\subseteq\mathcal O_K$ such that every $f^{(n)}$ is irreducible modulo $\mathfrak p$ has density zero. Moreover, we prove that the subset of polynomial sequences …
We give a complete description of the arboreal Galois representation of a certain postcritically finite cubic polynomial over a large class of number fields and for a large class of basepoints. This is the first such example that is not conjugate to a power map, Chebyshev polynomial, or Lattès map. The associated Galois action on an infinite ternary rooted tree has Hausdorff dimension bounded strictly between that of the infinite wreath product of cyclic groups and that of the infinite wreath product of symmetric groups. We deduce a zero-density result for prime divisors in an orbit under this…
We give a survey of results on the Galois group of polynomials obtained by truncation of power series, the main example being the exponential series. We also present some evidence of a new phenomena: Galois groups of Padé approximation polynomials seem to have special properties as well.
We study the algebraic properties of Generalized Laguerre polynomials for negative integral values of a given parameter which is $L_{n}^{(-1-n-r)}(x)= \sum\limits_{j=0}^{n} \binom{n-j+r}{n-j} \frac{x^{j}}{j!}$ for integers $r\geq 0, n\geq 1$. For different values of parameter $r$, this family provides polynomials which are of great interest. Hajir conjectured that for integers $r\geq 0$ and $n\geq 1$, $L_{n}^{(-1-n-r)}(x)$ is an irreducible polynomial whose Galois group contains $A_n$, the alternating group on $n$ symbols. Extending earlier results of Schur, Hajir, Sell, Nair and Shorey, we co…
We use a rigidity argument to prove the existence of two related degree twenty-eight covers of the projective plane with Galois group SU3(3).2 = G2(2). Constructing corresponding two-parameter polynomials directly from the defining group-theoretic data seems beyond feasablity. Instead we provide two independent constructions of these polynomials, one from 3-division points on covers of the projective line studied by Deligne and Mostow, and one from 2-division points of genus three curves studied by Shioda. We explain how one of the covers also arises as a 2-division polynomial for a family of …
We report on an implementation of Galois groups in the new computer algebra system OSCAR. As an application we compute Galois groups of Ehrhart polynomials of lattice polytope
We study the problem of existence of one-parameter, linear families of polynomials of degree n all of whose polynomials have Galois group A_n. The methods we use have a strong geometric flavour.
Let $G$ be a subgroup of the symmetric group $S_n$, and let $δ_G=|S_n/G|^{-1}$ where $|S_n/G|$ is the index of $G$ in $S_n$. Then there are at most $O_{n, ε}(H^{n-1+δ_G+ε})$ monic integer polynomials of degree $n$ having Galois group $G$ and height not exceeding $H$, so there are only `few' polynomials having `small' Galois group.
We prove Odoni's conjecture in all prime degrees; namely, we prove that for every positive prime $p$, there exists a degree $p$ polynomial $φ\in\mathbb{Z}[x]$ with surjective arboreal Galois representation. We also show that Vojta's conjecture implies the existence of such a polynomial in many degrees $d$ which are not prime.
The smallest non-abelian p-groups play a fundamental role in the theory of Galois p-extensions. We illustrate this by highlighting their role in the definition of the norm residue map in Galois cohomology. We then determine how often these groups --- as well as other closely related, larger p-groups --- occur as Galois groups over given base fields. We show further how the appearance of some Galois groups forces the appearance of other Galois groups in an interesting way.
The problem of computing \emph{the exponent lattice} which consists of all the multiplicative relations between the roots of a univariate polynomial has drawn much attention in the field of computer algebra. As is known, almost all irreducible polynomials with integer coefficients have only trivial exponent lattices. However, the algorithms in the literature have difficulty in proving such triviality for a generic polynomial. In this paper, the relations between the Galois group (respectively, \emph{the Galois-like groups}) and the triviality of the exponent lattice of a polynomial are investi…
We compute explicit polynomials having the sporadic Higman-Sims group HS and its automorphism group Aut(HS) as Galois groups over the rational function field Q(t).
Using the action of the Galois group of a normal extension of number fields, we generalize and symmetrize various fundamental statements in algebra and algebraic number theory concerning splitting types of prime ideals, factorization types of polynomials modulo primes, and cycle types of the Galois groups of polynomials. One remarkable example is the removal of all artificial constraints from the Kummer-Dedekind Theorem that relates splitting and factorization patterns. Finally, we present an elementary proof that the discriminant of the splitting field of a monic irreducible polynomial with i…
Using the principle that characteristic polynomials of matrices obtained from elements of a reductive group over a number field typically have splitting field with Galois group isomorphic to its Weyl group, we construct an explicit monic integral polynomial of degree 240 whose splitting field has Galois group the Weyl group of the exceptional group of type E_8.
Suppose $f \in K[x]$ is a polynomial. The absolute Galois group of $K$ acts on the preimage tree $\mathrm{T}$ of $0$ under $f$. The resulting homomorphism $ϕ_f: \mathrm{Gal}_K \to \mathrm{Aut} \mathrm{T}$ is called the arboreal Galois representation. Odoni conjectured that for all Hilbertian fields $K$ there exists a polynomial $f$ for which $ϕ_f$ is surjective. We show that this conjecture is false.
We prove that the arboreal Galois representation attached to a large class of quadratic polynomials defined over a field of rational functions in characteristic zero has finite index in the full automorphism group of the associated preimage tree. Moreover, we show that the index is bounded, in most cases, independently of the polynomial.
Granboulan computed an explicit polynomial whose Galois group over the rational function field Q(t) is the Mathieu group M24. By a result of Malle and Matzat, it was known before that such a polynomial exists. Even more, their proof showed that there is a 1-parameter family of such polynomials. In this note we compute this family.
We estimate several probability distributions arising from the study of random, monic polynomials of degree $n$ with coefficients in the integers of a general $p$-adic field $K_{\mathfrak{p}}$ having residue field with $q= p^f$ elements. We estimate the distribution of the degrees of irreducible factors of the polynomials, with tight error bounds valid when $q> n^2+n$. We also estimate the distribution of Galois groups of such polynomials, showing that for fixed $n$, almost all Galois groups are cyclic in the limit $q \to \infty$. In particular, we show that the Galois groups are cyclic with p…
By two well-known results, one of Ax, one of Lubotzky and van den Dries, a profinite group is projective iff it is isomorphic to the absolute Galois group of a pseudo-algebraically closed field. This paper gives an analogous characterization of relatively projective profinite groups as absolute Galois groups of regularly closed fields.
We close a gap in the literature by showing that the full covering groups of the Mathieu group $M_{22}$ and of its automorphism group $Aut(M_{22})$ occur as the Galois group of $\mathbb{Q}$-regular Galois extensions of $\mathbb{Q}(t)$.
Ramification groups of Galois extensions over local fields of positive characteristic with Galois group isomorphic to the group of unitriangular matrices
