We close a gap in the literature by showing that the full covering groups of the Mathieu group $M_{22}$ and of its automorphism group $Aut(M_{22})$ occur as the Galois group of $\mathbb{Q}$-regular Galois extensions of $\mathbb{Q}(t)$.
We investigate specializations of infinite families of regular Galois extensions over number fields. The problem to what extent the local behaviour of specializations of one single regular Galois extension can be prescribed has been investigated by Dèbes and Ghazi in the unramified case, and by Legrand, Neftin and the author in general. Here, we generalize these results and give a partial solution to Grunwald problems using Galois extensions arising as specializations of a family of regular Galois extensions.
The refined Swan conductor is defined by K.\ Kato \cite{KK2}, and generalized by T.\ Saito \cite{wild}. In this part, we consider some smooth $l$-adic étale sheaves of rank $p$ such that we can be define the $rsw$ following T.\ Saito, on some smooth dense open subscheme $U$ of a smooth separated scheme X of finite type over a perfect fields $κ$ of characteristic $p>0$. We give an explicit expression of $rsw(\mathcal{F})$ in some situation. As a consequence, we show that it is integral.
The difference Galois theory of Mahler equations is an active research area. The present paper aims at developing the analytic aspects of this theory. We first attach a pair of connection matrices to any regular singular Mahler equation. We then show that these connection matrices can be used to produce a Zariski-dense subgroup of the difference Galois group of any regular singular Mahler equation.
We enhance the analogy between field extensions and covering spaces by introducing the concept of splitting covering which correspondences to the splitting field in Galois theory. We define semi-topological Galois groups for Weierstrass polynomials and prove the existence of a Galois correspondence. This new tool enables us to study the inverse Galois problem from a new viewpoint.
We are studing Galois actions on fundamental groups. Using towers of coverings we construct measures on the products of finite copies of Z_p. Using these measures we can calculate coefficients of Galois representations. In the simplest case of measures on Z_p, we get Kubota_Leopoldt p-adic L-functions and p-adic Hurwitz zeta functions.
Given a number field $k$, we show that, for many finite groups $G$, all the Galois extensions of $k$ with Galois group $G$ cannot be obtained by specializing any given finitely many Galois extensions $E/k(T)$ with Galois group $G$ and $E/k$ regular. Our examples include abelian groups, dihedral groups, symmetric groups, general linear groups over finite fields, etc. We also provide a similar conclusion while specializing any given infinitely many Galois extensions $E/k(T)$ with Galois group $G$ and $E/k$ regular of a certain type, under a conjectural "uniform Faltings" theorem".
We generalize a result of F.\ Legrand about the existence of non-parametric Galois extensions for a given group $G$. More precisely, for a $K$-regular Galois extension $F|K(t)$, we consider the translates $F(s)|K(s)$ by an extension $K(s)|K(t)$ of rational function fields (in other words, $s$ is a root of $g(X)-t$ for some rational function $g\in K(X)$). We then show that if $F|K(t)$ is a $K$-regular Galois extension with group $G$ over a number field $K$, then for any degree $k\ge 2$ and almost all (in a density sense) rational functions $g$ of degree $k$, the translate of $F$ by a root field…
We show that families of coverings of an algebraic curve where the associated Cayley-Schreier graphs form an expander family exhibit strong forms of geometric (genus and gonality) growth. Combining this general result with finiteness statements for rational points under such conditions, we derive results concerning the variation of Galois representations in one-parameter families of abelian varieties.
Initially motivated by the relations between Anabelian Geometry and Artin's L-functions of the associated Galois-representations, here we study the list of zeta-functions of genus two abelian coverings of elliptic curves over finite fields. Our goal is to provide a complete description of such a list.
The regular subgroup determining an induced Hopf Galois structure for a Galois extension $L/K$ is obtained as the direct product of the corresponding regular groups of the inducing subextensions. We describe here the associated Hopf algebra and Hopf action of an induced structure and we prove that they are obtained by tensoring the corresponding inducing objects. In order to deal with their associated orders we develop a general method to compute bases and free generators in terms of matrices coming from representation theory of Hopf modules. In the case of an induced Hopf Galois structure it …
Let f: S' --> S be a finite and faithfully flat morphism of locally noetherian schemes of constant rank n and let G be a smooth, commutative and quasi-projective S-group scheme with connected fibers. For every r>0, let Res_{G}^{(r)}: H^{r}(S_{et},G)---> H^{r}(S'_{et},G) and Cores_{G}^{(r)}: H^{r}(S'_{et},G)---> H^{r}(S_{et},G) be, respectively, the restriction and corestriction maps in etale cohomology induced by f. For certain pairs (f, G), we construct maps α_{r}: Ker Cores_{G}^{(r)}---> Coker Res_{G}^{(r)} and β_{r}: Coker Res_{G}^{(r)}---> Ker Cores_{G}^{(r)} such that α_{r}oβ_{r}=β_{r}oα_…
We introduce mod $l$ Milnor invariants of a Galois element associated to Ihara's Galois representation on the pro-$l$ fundamental group of a punctured projective line ($l$ being a prime number), as arithmetic analogues of Milnor invariants of a pure braid. We then show that triple quadratic (resp. cubic) residue symbols of primes in the rational (resp. Eisenstein) number field are expressed by mod $2$ (resp. mod $3$) triple Milnor invariants of Frobenius elements. For this, we introduce dilogarithmic mod $l$ Heisenberg ramified covering ${\cal D}^{(l)}$ of $\mathbb{P}^1$, which may be regarded…
We investigate a certain class of (geometric) finite (Galois) coverings of formal fibres of $p$-adic curves and the corresponding quotient of the (geometric) étale fundamental group. A key result in our investigation is that these (Galois) coverings can be compactified to finite (Galois) coverings of proper $p$-adic curves. We also prove that the maximal prime-to-$p$ quotient of the geometric étale fundamental group of a (geometrically connected) formal fibre of a $p$-adic curve is (pro-)prime-to-$p$ free of finite computable rank.
By two well-known results, one of Ax, one of Lubotzky and van den Dries, a profinite group is projective iff it is isomorphic to the absolute Galois group of a pseudo-algebraically closed field. This paper gives an analogous characterization of relatively projective profinite groups as absolute Galois groups of regularly closed fields.
Given a number field $F$, a finite group $G$ and an indeterminate $T$, {\it{a $G$-parametric extension over $F$}} is a finite Galois extension $E/F(T)$ with Galois group $G$ and $E/F$ regular that has all the Galois extensions of $F$ with Galois group $G$ among its specializations. We are mainly interested in producing non-$G$-parametric extensions, which relates to classical questions in inverse Galois theory like the Beckmann-Black problem. Building on a strategy developed in previous papers, we show that there exists at least one non-$G$-parametric extension over $F$ for a given non-trivial…
We introduce and study a class of field extensions that we call pre-Galois; viz. extensions that become Galois after some linearly disjoint Galois base change. Among them are geometrically Galois extensions of k(T), with k a field: extensions that become Galois and remain of the same degree after passing to the algebraic closure of k. We develop a pre-Galois theory that includes a Galois correspondence, and investigate the corresponding variants of the inverse Galois problem. We provide answers in situations where the classical analogs are not known. In particular, for every finite simple grou…
We show that for a large class of finite groups G, the number of Galois extensions E/Q of group G and discriminant $|d_E|\leq y$ grows like a power of $y$ (for some specified exponent). The groups G are the regular Galois groups over Q and the extensions E/Q that we count are obtained by specialization from a given regular Galois extension F/Q(T). The extensions E/Q can further be prescribed any unramified local behavior at each suitably large prime $p\leq \log (y)/δ$ for some $δ\geq 1$. This result is a step toward the Malle conjecture on the number of Galois extensions of given group and bou…
Let $ρ$ be the $p$-adic Galois representation attached to a cuspidal, regular algebraic, polarizable automorphic representation of $GL_n$. Assuming only that $ρ$ satisfies an irreducibility condition, we prove the vanishing of the adjoint Bloch--Kato Selmer group attached to $ρ$. This generalizes previous work of the author and James Newton.
We remove a parity condition from the construction of automorphic Galois representations carried out in the Paris Book Project. We subsequently generalize this construction to the case of `mixed-parity' (but still regular essentially self-dual) automorphic representations over totally real fields, finding associated geometric projective representations. Finally, we optimize some of the Galois lifting results of arxiv:1207.6724 and apply them to the previous mixed-parity setting.
Given an irreducible bivariate polynomial $f(t,x)\in \mathbb{Q}[t,x]$, what groups $H$ appear as the Galois group of $f(t_0,x)$ for infinitely many $t_0\in \mathbb{Q}$? How often does a group $H$ as above appear as the Galois group of $f(t_0,x)$, $t_0\in \mathbb{Q}$? We give an answer for $f$ of large $x$-degree with alternating or symmetric Galois group over $\mathbb{Q}(t)$. This is done by determining the low genus subcovers of coverings $\tilde{X}\rightarrow \mathbb{P}^1_{\mathbb{C}}$ with alternating or symmetric monodromy groups.
Given a field $k$ and a finite group $H$, {\it{an $H$-parametric extension over $k$}} is a finite Galois extension of $k(T)$ of Galois group containing $H$ which is regular over $k$ and has all the Galois extensions of $k$ of group $H$ among its specializations. We are mainly interested in producing non $H$-parametric extensions, which relates to classical questions in inverse Galois theory like the Beckmann-Black problem and the existence of one parameter generic polynomials. We develop a general approach started in a preceding paper and provide new non parametricity criteria and new examples…
In the frame of Mahler's method for algebraic independence we show that the algebraic relations over Q linking the values of functions solutions of a system of functional equations come from the algebraic relations between the functions themselves, by specialisation. We deduce some results on the linear independence of the q-regular functions.
We consider a large class of so-called dynamical Belyi maps and study the Galois groups of iterates of such maps. From the combinatorial invariants of the maps, we construct a useful presentation of their Galois groups as subgroups of automorphism groups of regular trees, in terms of iterated wreath products. This allows us to study the behavior of the monodromy groups under specialization of the maps, and to derive applications to dynamical sequences.
Let X be a smooth projective curve of positive genus defined over a number field K. Assume given a Galois covering map x from X to the projective line over K and a place v of K. We introduce a local canonical height on the set of K_v-valued points of X associated to x as an integral with logarithmic integrand, generalizing Tate's local Neron function on an elliptic curve. The resulting global height can be viewed as a 'Mahler measure' associated to x. We prove that the local canonical height can be obtained by averaging, and taking a limit, over divisors of higher order Weierstrass points on X…
We disprove a strong form of the Regular Inverse Galois Problem: there exist finite groups $G$ which do not have a realization $F/\Qq(T)$ that induces all Galois extensions $L/\Qq(U)$ of group $G$ by specializing $T$ to $f(U) \in \Qq(U)$. For these groups, we produce two extensions $L/\Qq(U)$ that cannot be simultaneously induced, thus even disproving a weaker Lifting Property. Our examples of such groups $G$ include symmetric groups $S_n$, $n\geq 7$, infinitely many $PSL_2(\Ff_p)$, the Monster. Two variants of the question with $\Qq(U)$ replaced by $\Cc(U)$ and $\Qq$ are answered similarly, t…
The paper is concerned with the following version of Hilbert's irreducibility theorem: if $π: X \to Y$ is a Galois $G$-covering of varieties over a number field $k$ and $H \subset G$ is a subgroup, then for all sufficiently large and sufficiently divisible $n$ there exist a degree $n$ closed point $y \in |Y|$ and $x \in π^{-1}(y)$ for which $k(x)/k(y)$ is a Galois $H$-extension, and $k(y)/k$ is an $S_n$-extension. The result has interesting corollaries when applied to moduli spaces of various kinds. For instance, for every finite group $G$ there is a constant $N$ such that for all $n>N$ there …
For a smooth group scheme $G$ over an extension of $\mathbf{Z}_p$ such that the generic fiber of $G$ is reductive, we study the generic fiber of the Galois deformation ring for a $G$-valued mod $p$ representation of the absolute Galois group of a finite extension of $\mathbf{Q}_\ell$ with $\ell \neq p$. In particular, we show it admits a regular dense open locus, and that it is equidimensional of dimension $\dim G$.
Let~$E$ be a Hilbertian field of characteristic~$0$. R.W.K. Odoni conjectured that for every positive integer~$n$ there exists a polynomial~$f\in E[X]$ of degree~$n$ such that each iterate~$f^{\circ{k}}$ of~$f$ is irreducible and the Galois group of the splitting field of~$f^{\circ k}$ is isomorphic to the automorphism group of a regular,~$n$-branching tree of height~$k.$ We prove this conjecture when~$E$ is a number field.
There are two famous Abel Theorems. Most well-known is his description of abelian (analytic) functions on a one dimensional compact complex torus. The other collects together those complex tori, with their prime degree isogenies, into one space. Riemann's generalization of the first features his famous theta functions. His deepest work aimed at extending Abel's second theorem; he died before he fulfilled this. That extension is often pictured on complex higher dimension torii. For Riemann, though, it was to spaces of Jacobians of compact Riemann surfaces, W, of genus g, toward studying functio…
We compute a family of coverings with four ramification points, defined over $\mathbb{Q}$, with regular Galois group $PSL_5(2)$. On the one hand, this is (to my knowledge) the first explicit polynomial with group $PSL_5(2)$ over $\mathbb{Q}(t)$. On the other hand, it also positively answers the question whether $PSL_5(2)$ is the monodromy group of a rational function over $\mathbb{Q}$. At least this does not follow from considering class triples in $PSL_5(2)$, as there are no rigid, rational genus-zero triples. Also, for 4-tuples, our family is the only one with a Hurwitz curve of genus zero (…

Let $\mathcal{X}$ be a Riemann surface of genus $g>0$ defined over a number field $K$ which is a degree $d$-covering of $\mathbb{P}^1_K$. In this paper we show the existence of infinitely many linearly disjoint degree $d$-extensions $L/K$ over which the Jacobian of $\mathcal{X}$ gains rank. In the case where 0, 1 and $\infty$ are the only branch points, and there is an automorphism $σ$ of $\mathcal{X}$ which cyclically permutes these branch points, we obtain the same result for the Jacobian of $\mathcal{X}/σ$. In particular if $\mathcal{X}$ is the Klein quartic, then the construction provides …
We investigate local-global compatibility for cuspidal automorphic representations $π$ for GL(2) over CM fields that are regular algebraic of weight $0$. We prove that for a Dirichlet density one set of primes $l$ and any $ι: \overline{\mathbf{Q}}_l \cong \mathbf{C}$, the $l$-adic Galois representation attached to $π$ and $ι$ has nontrivial monodromy at any $v \nmid l$ in $F$ at which $π$ is special.
The interplay between set-theoretic solutions of the Yang--Baxter equation of Mathematical Physics, skew braces, regular subgroups, and Hopf--Galois structures has spawned a considerable body of literature in recent years. In a recent paper, Alan Koch generalised a construction of Lindsay N.~Childs, showing how one can obtain bi-skew braces $(G, \cdot, \circ)$ from an endomorphism of a group $(G, \cdot)$ whose image is abelian. In this paper, we characterise the endomorphisms of a group $(G, \cdot)$ for which Koch's construction, and a variation on it, yield (bi-)skew braces. We show how the s…
This paper deals with the Weak Inverse Galois Problem which, for a given field $k$, states that, for every finite group $G$, there exists a finite separable extension $L/k$ such that ${\rm{Aut}}(L/k)=G$. One of its goals is to explain how one can generically produce families of fields which fulfill this problem, but which do not fulfill the usual Inverse Galois Problem. We show that this holds for, e.g., the fields $\mathbb{Q}^{\rm{sol}}$, $\mathbb{Q}^{\rm{tr}}$, $\mathbb{Q}^{\rm{pyth}}$, and for the maximal pro-$p$-extensions of $\mathbb{Q}$. Moreover, we show that, for every finite non-trivi…
The object of this paper is the study of a class of dessins d'enfants, the so-called diameter four trees. These objects, first introduced by G. Shabat, can be considered as the simplest non trivial example of etale covers of the projective line minus three points. Their arithmetic properties are still mysterious, and their study can inspire the understanding of more general situations. Here, the main interest is devoted to the action of the absolute Galois group on these (isomorphism classes of) coverings. In particular, in many cases, we are able to distinguish Galois orbits and to describe t…
For an odd prime p, we determine a minimal set of topological generators of the pro-p Iwahori subgroup of a split reductive group G over Z\_p. In the simple adjoint case and for any sufficiently large regular prime p, we also construct Galois extensions of Q with Galois group between the pro-p and the standard Iwahori subgroups of G.
By work of C. Greither and B. Pareigis as well as N. P. Byott, the enumeration of Hopf-Galois structures on a Galois extension of fields with Galois group $G$ may be reduced to that of regular subgroups of $\mbox{Hol}(N)$ isomorphic to $G$ as $N$ ranges over all groups of order $|G|$, where $\mbox{Hol}(-)$ denotes the holomorph. In this paper, we shall give a description of such subgroups of $\mbox{Hol}(N)$ in terms of bijective crossed homomorphisms $G\longrightarrow N$, and then use it to study two questions related to non-existence of Hopf-Galois structures.
Let $F$ be a field of characteristic $0$ containing all roots of unity. We construct a functorial compact Hausdorff space $X_F$ whose profinite fundamental group agrees with the absolute Galois group of $F$, i.e. the category of finite covering spaces of $X_F$ is equivalent to the category of finite extensions of $F$. The construction is based on the ring of rational Witt vectors of $F$. In the case of the cyclotomic extension of $\mathbb{Q}$, the classical fundamental group of $X_F$ is a (proper) dense subgroup of the absolute Galois group of $F$. We also discuss a variant of this constructio…
Using Calegari's result on the Fontaine-Mazur conjecture, we study the irreducibility of pure, regular, rank 3 weakly compatible systems of self-dual l-adic representations. As a consequence, we prove that the Tate conjecture holds for a family of elliptic surfaces defined over Q with geometric genus bigger than 1.
$\DeclareMathOperator{\Aut}{Aut}$Let $p, q$ be distinct primes, with $p > 2$. We classify the Hopf-Galois structures on Galois extensions of degree $p^{2} q$, such that the Sylow $p$-subgroups of the Galois group are cyclic. This we do, according to Greither and Pareigis, and Byott, by classifying the regular subgroups of the holomorphs of the groups $(G, \cdot)$ of order $p^{2} q$, in the case when the Sylow $p$-subgroups of $G$ are cyclic. This is equivalent to classifying the skew braces $(G, \cdot, \circ)$. Furthermore, we prove that if $G$ and $Γ$ are groups of order $p^{2} q$ with non-is…
Let pi be a regular, algebraic, essentially self-dual cuspidal automorphic representation of GL_n(A_F), where F is a totally real field and n is at most 5. We show that for all primes l, the l-adic Galois representations associated to pi are irreducible, and for all but finitely many primes l, the mod l Galois representations associated to pi are also irreducible. We also show that the Lie algebras of the Zariski closures of the l-adic representations are independent of l.
We prove that the groups PSL(r,q^d) can be realized F_q(T)-regularly as Galois groups over the purely transcendental field F_q(T)(t_1,...,t_{r-1}) if r is even and r/2 is coprime to q^d-1. The method is to use twisted moduli schemes of Drinfeld modules (a la Shih). If one has sufficient control over modular forms, it can be made into an algorithm to find explicit equations. We do this for PSL(2,q^2) using Drinfeld modular forms.
We incorporate nonlinear covers of quasisplit reductive groups into the Langlands program, defining an L-group associated to such a cover. This L-group is an extension of the absolute Galois group of a local or global field $F$ by a complex reductive group. The L-group depends on an extension of a quasisplit reductive $F$-group by $\mathbf{K}_2$, a positive integer $n$ (the degree of the cover), an injective character $ε\colon μ_n \rightarrow {\mathbb C}^\times$, and a separable closure of $F$. Our L-group is consistent with previous work on covering groups, and its construction is contravaria…
We study the middle convolution of local systems on the punctured affine line in the setting of singular cohomology and in the setting of étale cohomology. We derive a formula to compute the topological monodromy of the middle convolution in the general case and use it to deduce some irreducibility criteria. Then we give a geometric interpretation of the middle convolution in the étale setting. This geometric approach to the convolution and the theory of Hecke characters yields information on the occurring arithmetic determinants. We employ these methods to realize special linear groups regula…
We prove the existence of $\mathrm{GSpin}_{2n}$-valued Galois representations corresponding to cohomological cuspidal automorphic representations of certain quasi-split forms of $\mathrm{GSO}_{2n}$ under the local hypotheses that there is a Steinberg component and that the archimedean parameters are regular for the standard representation. This is based on the cohomology of Shimura varieties of abelian type, of type $D^{\mathbb{H}}$, arising from forms of $\mathrm{GSO}_{2n}$. As an application, under similar hypotheses, we compute automorphic multiplicities, prove meromorphic continuation of (…
We develop the notion of a geometric covering of a rigid space X, which yields a much larger class of covering spaces than that studied previously by de Jong. Geometric coverings of X are closed under disjoint unions and are étale local on X. If X is connected, its geometric coverings form a tame infinite Galois category, and hence are classified by a topological group. The definition is based on the property of lifting of "geometric arcs," making it similar to geometric coverings of schemes studied by Bhatt and Scholze as well as semicoverings of topological spaces introduced by Brazas.
