The previous proof of proposition 3 was incorrect, the hypotheses of proposition 3 (ii) have been narrowed to allow a correct proof. It does not change the conclusions we draw of the proposition. The introduction was reformulated in a (hopefully) clearer way
In order to extend the study of the regular version of the regular inverse Galois problem to skew fields, we generalize the definition of regular field extensions for commutative fields to the case of arbitrary fields. We then propose a general version of the inverse Galois property and show that for a field k, the study of the class InvReg(k) of non-trivial regular extensions of k satisfying this property constitutes a natural generalization of the classical regular inverse Galois problem. Next, we use recent results from Behajaina, Deschamps, and Legrand on the inverse Galois problem in the noncommutative setting to show that certain skew fraction fields h(t, σ, δ) belong to the class InvReg(h). Finally, we generalize Behajaina's method to construct extensions belonging to InvReg(h) that are not of the form h(t, σ) with σ an automorphism of finite order.
Let $H$ be a skew field of finite dimension over its center $k$. We solve the Inverse Galois Problem over the field of fractions $H(X)$ of the ring of polynomial functions over $H$ in the variable $X$, if $k$ contains an ample field.
In this article, we show that the Inverse Galois Problem over a skew field $H$ of finite dimension over its center $k$ is equivalent to a variant of the Inverse Galois Problem over $k$ involving a polynomial constraint. As an application, we show that if $k$ contains an ample field, then the Inverse Galois Problem has a positive answer over the skew field $H(t)$ of rational fractions with central indeterminate.
We classify all skew braces of Heisenberg type for a prime number $ p>3 $. Furthermore, we determine the automorphism group of each one of these skew braces (as well as their socle and annihilator). Hence, by utilising a link between skew braces and Hopf-Galois theory, we can determine all Hopf-Galois structures of Heisenberg type on Galois field extensions of fields of degree $ p^{3} $.
We present a different version of the well-known connection between Hopf--Galois structures and skew braces, building on a recent paper of A. Koch and P. J. Truman. We show that the known results that involve this connection easily carry over to this new perspective, and that new ones naturally appear. As an application, we present new insights on the study of the surjectivity of the Hopf--Galois correspondence, explaining in more detail the role of bi-skew braces in Hopf--Galois theory.
Let $G$ be a finite nonabelian group, and let $ψ:G\to G$ be a homomorphism with abelian image. We show how $ψ$ gives rise to two Hopf-Galois structures on a Galois extension $L/K$ with Galois group (isomorphic to) $G$; one of these structures generalizes the construction given by a ``fixed point free abelian endomorphism'' introduced by Childs in 2013. We construct the skew left brace corresponding to each of the two Hopf-Galois structures above. We will show that one of the skew left braces is in fact a bi-skew brace, allowing us to obtain four set-theoretic solutions to the Yang-Baxter equat…
Given a skew left brace $\mathfrak{B}$, we introduce the notion of an "opposite" skew left brace $\mathfrak{B}'$, which is closely related to the concept of the opposite of a group, and provide several applications. Skew left braces are closely linked with both solutions to the Yang-Baxter Equation and Hopf-Galois structures on Galois field extensions. We show that the set-theoretic solution to the YBE given by $\mathfrak{B}'$ is the inverse to the solution given by $\mathfrak{B}$; this allows us to identify the group-like elements in the Hopf algebra providing the Hopf-Galois structure using …
In this article, we prove that if $H$ is a skew field of center $k$ and $σ$ an automorphism of finite order of $H$ such that the fixed subfield $k^{\langle σ\rangle}$ of $k$ under the action of $σ$ contains an ample field, then the inverse Galois problem has a positive answer over the skew field $H(t,σ)$ of twisted rational fractions. Moreover, if $k^{\langle σ\rangle}$ contains either a real closed field, or an Henselian field of residue characteristic $0$ and containing all roots of unity, then the profree group of countable rank $\widehat{F}_ω$ is a Galois group over $H(t,σ)$.
The interplay between set-theoretic solutions of the Yang--Baxter equation of Mathematical Physics, skew braces, regular subgroups, and Hopf--Galois structures has spawned a considerable body of literature in recent years. In a recent paper, Alan Koch generalised a construction of Lindsay N.~Childs, showing how one can obtain bi-skew braces $(G, \cdot, \circ)$ from an endomorphism of a group $(G, \cdot)$ whose image is abelian. In this paper, we characterise the endomorphisms of a group $(G, \cdot)$ for which Koch's construction, and a variation on it, yield (bi-)skew braces. We show how the s…
Let $G$ and $N$ be two finite groups of the same order. It is well-known that the existences of the following are equivalent: (a) a Hopf-Galois structure of type $N$ on any Galois $G$-extension; (b) a skew brace with additive group $N$ and multiplicative group $G$; (c) a regular subgroup isomorphic to $G$ in the holomorph of $N$. We shall say that $(G,N)$ is realizable when any of the above exists. Fixing $N$ to be a cyclic group, W. Rump (2019) has determined the groups $G$ for which $(G,N)$ is realizable. In this paper, fixing $G$ to be a cyclic group instead, we shall give a complete charac…
We investigate specializations of infinite families of regular Galois extensions over number fields. The problem to what extent the local behaviour of specializations of one single regular Galois extension can be prescribed has been investigated by Dèbes and Ghazi in the unramified case, and by Legrand, Neftin and the author in general. Here, we generalize these results and give a partial solution to Grunwald problems using Galois extensions arising as specializations of a family of regular Galois extensions.
$\DeclareMathOperator{\Aut}{Aut}$Let $p, q$ be distinct primes, with $p > 2$. We classify the Hopf-Galois structures on Galois extensions of degree $p^{2} q$, such that the Sylow $p$-subgroups of the Galois group are cyclic. This we do, according to Greither and Pareigis, and Byott, by classifying the regular subgroups of the holomorphs of the groups $(G, \cdot)$ of order $p^{2} q$, in the case when the Sylow $p$-subgroups of $G$ are cyclic. This is equivalent to classifying the skew braces $(G, \cdot, \circ)$. Furthermore, we prove that if $G$ and $Γ$ are groups of order $p^{2} q$ with non-is…
We extend finite embedding problems over fields, a central notion in inverse Galois theory, to the situation of a skew field $H$ of finite dimension over its center $h$. First, we show that solving a finite embedding problem over $H$ is equivalent to finding a solution to some finite embedding problem over $h$ fulfilling a polynomial constraint. Next, we show that every constant finite split embedding problem over the skew field of fractions $H(t)$ with central indeterminate $t$ has a solution, if $h$ is an ample field. This is a non-commutative analogue of a deep result of Pop. More generally…
We close a gap in the literature by showing that the full covering groups of the Mathieu group $M_{22}$ and of its automorphism group $Aut(M_{22})$ occur as the Galois group of $\mathbb{Q}$-regular Galois extensions of $\mathbb{Q}(t)$.
The difference Galois theory of Mahler equations is an active research area. The present paper aims at developing the analytic aspects of this theory. We first attach a pair of connection matrices to any regular singular Mahler equation. We then show that these connection matrices can be used to produce a Zariski-dense subgroup of the difference Galois group of any regular singular Mahler equation.
The Hopf-Galois structures admitted by a Galois extension of fields $ L/K $ with Galois group $ G $ correspond bijectively with certain subgroups of $ \mathrm{Perm}(G) $. We use a natural partition of the set of such subgroups to obtain a method for partitioning the set of corresponding Hopf-Galois structures, which we term $ ρ$-conjugation. We study properties of this construction, with particular emphasis on the Hopf-Galois analogue of the Galois correspondence, the connection with skew left braces, and applications to questions of integral module structure in extensions of local or global f…
Given a number field $k$, we show that, for many finite groups $G$, all the Galois extensions of $k$ with Galois group $G$ cannot be obtained by specializing any given finitely many Galois extensions $E/k(T)$ with Galois group $G$ and $E/k$ regular. Our examples include abelian groups, dihedral groups, symmetric groups, general linear groups over finite fields, etc. We also provide a similar conclusion while specializing any given infinitely many Galois extensions $E/k(T)$ with Galois group $G$ and $E/k$ regular of a certain type, under a conjectural "uniform Faltings" theorem".
We generalize a result of F.\ Legrand about the existence of non-parametric Galois extensions for a given group $G$. More precisely, for a $K$-regular Galois extension $F|K(t)$, we consider the translates $F(s)|K(s)$ by an extension $K(s)|K(t)$ of rational function fields (in other words, $s$ is a root of $g(X)-t$ for some rational function $g\in K(X)$). We then show that if $F|K(t)$ is a $K$-regular Galois extension with group $G$ over a number field $K$, then for any degree $k\ge 2$ and almost all (in a density sense) rational functions $g$ of degree $k$, the translate of $F$ by a root field…
The regular subgroup determining an induced Hopf Galois structure for a Galois extension $L/K$ is obtained as the direct product of the corresponding regular groups of the inducing subextensions. We describe here the associated Hopf algebra and Hopf action of an induced structure and we prove that they are obtained by tensoring the corresponding inducing objects. In order to deal with their associated orders we develop a general method to compute bases and free generators in terms of matrices coming from representation theory of Hopf modules. In the case of an induced Hopf Galois structure it …
By two well-known results, one of Ax, one of Lubotzky and van den Dries, a profinite group is projective iff it is isomorphic to the absolute Galois group of a pseudo-algebraically closed field. This paper gives an analogous characterization of relatively projective profinite groups as absolute Galois groups of regularly closed fields.
Given a number field $F$, a finite group $G$ and an indeterminate $T$, {\it{a $G$-parametric extension over $F$}} is a finite Galois extension $E/F(T)$ with Galois group $G$ and $E/F$ regular that has all the Galois extensions of $F$ with Galois group $G$ among its specializations. We are mainly interested in producing non-$G$-parametric extensions, which relates to classical questions in inverse Galois theory like the Beckmann-Black problem. Building on a strategy developed in previous papers, we show that there exists at least one non-$G$-parametric extension over $F$ for a given non-trivial…
We introduce and study a class of field extensions that we call pre-Galois; viz. extensions that become Galois after some linearly disjoint Galois base change. Among them are geometrically Galois extensions of k(T), with k a field: extensions that become Galois and remain of the same degree after passing to the algebraic closure of k. We develop a pre-Galois theory that includes a Galois correspondence, and investigate the corresponding variants of the inverse Galois problem. We provide answers in situations where the classical analogs are not known. In particular, for every finite simple grou…
Let $K/F$ be a finite Galois extension of fields with $Gal(K/F)=Γ$. In an earlier work of Timothy Kohl, the author enumerated dihedral Hopf-Galois structures acting on dihedral extensions. Dihedral group is one particular example of semidirect product of $\mathbb{Z}_n$ and $\mathbb{Z}_2$. In this article we count the number of Hopf-Galois structures with Galois group $Γ$ of type $G$, where $Γ,G$ are groups of the form $\mathbb{Z}_N\rtimes_ϕ\mathbb{Z}_2$ when $N$ is odd with radical of $N$ being a Burnside number. As an application we also find the corresponding number of skew braces.
We show that for a large class of finite groups G, the number of Galois extensions E/Q of group G and discriminant $|d_E|\leq y$ grows like a power of $y$ (for some specified exponent). The groups G are the regular Galois groups over Q and the extensions E/Q that we count are obtained by specialization from a given regular Galois extension F/Q(T). The extensions E/Q can further be prescribed any unramified local behavior at each suitably large prime $p\leq \log (y)/δ$ for some $δ\geq 1$. This result is a step toward the Malle conjecture on the number of Galois extensions of given group and bou…
Let $ρ$ be the $p$-adic Galois representation attached to a cuspidal, regular algebraic, polarizable automorphic representation of $GL_n$. Assuming only that $ρ$ satisfies an irreducibility condition, we prove the vanishing of the adjoint Bloch--Kato Selmer group attached to $ρ$. This generalizes previous work of the author and James Newton.
We remove a parity condition from the construction of automorphic Galois representations carried out in the Paris Book Project. We subsequently generalize this construction to the case of `mixed-parity' (but still regular essentially self-dual) automorphic representations over totally real fields, finding associated geometric projective representations. Finally, we optimize some of the Galois lifting results of arxiv:1207.6724 and apply them to the previous mixed-parity setting.
Given a field $k$ and a finite group $H$, {\it{an $H$-parametric extension over $k$}} is a finite Galois extension of $k(T)$ of Galois group containing $H$ which is regular over $k$ and has all the Galois extensions of $k$ of group $H$ among its specializations. We are mainly interested in producing non $H$-parametric extensions, which relates to classical questions in inverse Galois theory like the Beckmann-Black problem and the existence of one parameter generic polynomials. We develop a general approach started in a preceding paper and provide new non parametricity criteria and new examples…
In this paper and a forthcoming joint one with Y. Hachimori we study Iwasawa modules over an infinite Galois extension K of a number field k whose Galois group G=G(K/k) is isomorphic to the semidirect product of two copies of the p-adic numbers. After first analyzing some general algebraic properties of the corresponding Iwasawa algebra, we apply these results to the Galois group of the p-Hilbert class field over K. As a main tool we prove a Weierstrass preparation theorem for certain skew power series rings. One striking result in our work is the discovery of the abundance of faithful torsion…
Given a Hilbertian field $k$ and a finite set $\mathcal{S}$ of Krull valuations of $k$, we show that every finite split embedding problem $G \rightarrow {\rm{Gal}}(L/k)$ over $k$ with abelian kernel has a solu\-tion ${\rm{Gal}}(F/k) \rightarrow G$ such that every $v \in \mathcal{S}$ is totally split in $F/L$. Two applications are then given. Firstly, we solve a non-constant variant of the Beckmann--Black problem for solvable groups: given a field $k$ and a non-trivial finite solvable group $G$, every Galois field extension $F/k$ of group $G$ is shown to occur as the specialization at some $t_0…
We disprove a strong form of the Regular Inverse Galois Problem: there exist finite groups $G$ which do not have a realization $F/\Qq(T)$ that induces all Galois extensions $L/\Qq(U)$ of group $G$ by specializing $T$ to $f(U) \in \Qq(U)$. For these groups, we produce two extensions $L/\Qq(U)$ that cannot be simultaneously induced, thus even disproving a weaker Lifting Property. Our examples of such groups $G$ include symmetric groups $S_n$, $n\geq 7$, infinitely many $PSL_2(\Ff_p)$, the Monster. Two variants of the question with $\Qq(U)$ replaced by $\Cc(U)$ and $\Qq$ are answered similarly, t…
For a smooth group scheme $G$ over an extension of $\mathbf{Z}_p$ such that the generic fiber of $G$ is reductive, we study the generic fiber of the Galois deformation ring for a $G$-valued mod $p$ representation of the absolute Galois group of a finite extension of $\mathbf{Q}_\ell$ with $\ell \neq p$. In particular, we show it admits a regular dense open locus, and that it is equidimensional of dimension $\dim G$.
Let~$E$ be a Hilbertian field of characteristic~$0$. R.W.K. Odoni conjectured that for every positive integer~$n$ there exists a polynomial~$f\in E[X]$ of degree~$n$ such that each iterate~$f^{\circ{k}}$ of~$f$ is irreducible and the Galois group of the splitting field of~$f^{\circ k}$ is isomorphic to the automorphism group of a regular,~$n$-branching tree of height~$k.$ We prove this conjecture when~$E$ is a number field.
There are two famous Abel Theorems. Most well-known is his description of abelian (analytic) functions on a one dimensional compact complex torus. The other collects together those complex tori, with their prime degree isogenies, into one space. Riemann's generalization of the first features his famous theta functions. His deepest work aimed at extending Abel's second theorem; he died before he fulfilled this. That extension is often pictured on complex higher dimension torii. For Riemann, though, it was to spaces of Jacobians of compact Riemann surfaces, W, of genus g, toward studying functio…
This article is the third and last part of a series of three articles about compatible systems of symplectic Galois representations and applications to the inverse Galois problem. This part proves the following new result for the inverse Galois problem for symplectic groups. For any even positive integer n and any positive integer d, PSp_n(F_{l^d}) or PGSp_n(F_{l^d}) occurs as a Galois group over the rational numbers for a positive density set of primes l. The result is obtained by showing the existence of a regular, algebraic, self-dual, cuspidal automorphic representation of GL_n(A_Q) with l…

We investigate local-global compatibility for cuspidal automorphic representations $π$ for GL(2) over CM fields that are regular algebraic of weight $0$. We prove that for a Dirichlet density one set of primes $l$ and any $ι: \overline{\mathbf{Q}}_l \cong \mathbf{C}$, the $l$-adic Galois representation attached to $π$ and $ι$ has nontrivial monodromy at any $v \nmid l$ in $F$ at which $π$ is special.
This paper deals with the Weak Inverse Galois Problem which, for a given field $k$, states that, for every finite group $G$, there exists a finite separable extension $L/k$ such that ${\rm{Aut}}(L/k)=G$. One of its goals is to explain how one can generically produce families of fields which fulfill this problem, but which do not fulfill the usual Inverse Galois Problem. We show that this holds for, e.g., the fields $\mathbb{Q}^{\rm{sol}}$, $\mathbb{Q}^{\rm{tr}}$, $\mathbb{Q}^{\rm{pyth}}$, and for the maximal pro-$p$-extensions of $\mathbb{Q}$. Moreover, we show that, for every finite non-trivi…
In this paper, we give constructions of strongly regular Cayley graphs and skew Hadamard difference sets. Both constructions are based on choosing cyclotomic classes in finite fields, and our results generalize ten of the eleven sporadic examples of cyclotomic strongly regular graphs given by Schmidt and White [24] and several of subfield examples into infinite families. These infinite families of strongly regular graphs have new parameters. The main tools that we employed are relative Gauss sums instead of explicit evaluations of Gauss sums.
Using Calegari's result on the Fontaine-Mazur conjecture, we study the irreducibility of pure, regular, rank 3 weakly compatible systems of self-dual l-adic representations. As a consequence, we prove that the Tate conjecture holds for a family of elliptic surfaces defined over Q with geometric genus bigger than 1.
Let $G$ be a nonabelian group. We show how a collection of compatible endomorphisms $ψ_i:G\to G$ such that $ψ_i([G,G])\le Z(G)$ for all $i$ allows us to construct a family of bi-skew braces called a brace block. We relate this construction to other brace block constructions and interpret our results in terms of Hopf-Galois structures on Galois extensions. We give special consideration to the case where $G$ is of nilpotency class two, and we provide several examples, including finding the maximal brace block containing the group of quaternions.
Let pi be a regular, algebraic, essentially self-dual cuspidal automorphic representation of GL_n(A_F), where F is a totally real field and n is at most 5. We show that for all primes l, the l-adic Galois representations associated to pi are irreducible, and for all but finitely many primes l, the mod l Galois representations associated to pi are also irreducible. We also show that the Lie algebras of the Zariski closures of the l-adic representations are independent of l.
In this paper, we study the relative Langlands program formulated by Dipendra Prasad for Galois symmetric spaces. Under certain assumptions, we confirm the necessary conditions in Prasad's conjecture for regular depth-zero supercuspidal L-packets.
This paper extends the study of rank-metric codes in extension fields $\mathbb{L}$ equipped with an arbitrary Galois group $G = \mathrm{Gal}(\mathbb{L}/\mathbb{K})$. We propose a framework for studying these codes as subspaces of the group algebra $\mathbb{L}[G]$, and we relate this point of view with usual notions of rank-metric codes in $\mathbb{L}^N$ or in $\mathbb{K}^{N\times N}$, where $N = [\mathbb{L} : \mathbb{K}]$. We then adapt the notion of error-correcting pairs to this context, in order to provide a non-trivial decoding algorithm for these codes. We then focus on the case where $G$…
