We study the middle convolution of local systems on the punctured affine line in the setting of singular cohomology and in the setting of étale cohomology. We derive a formula to compute the topological monodromy of the middle convolution in the general case and use it to deduce some irreducibility criteria. Then we give a geometric interpretation of the middle convolution in the étale setting.
This geometric approach to the convolution and the theory of Hecke characters yields information on the occurring arithmetic determinants. We employ these methods to realize special linear groups regularly as Galois groups over ${\bf Q}(t).$
We study the middle convolution of local systems and realize special linear groups as Galois groups over the rationals. In the Appendix to this paper, written jointly with Stefan Reiter, we prove the existence of a new motivic local system with $G_2$-monodromy.
In this paper, we prove that for suitably chosen Dwork motives, the local Galois representation arising from middle cohomology of fibers over a point with $p$-adic valuation $<0$ on the base is regular and ordinary. The result will be crucial in the forthcoming work Potential Automorphy for $GL_n$. The proof consists of the construction of a semistable blowup and a use of Hyodo-Kato's log crystalline cohomology theory.
We study the relation of the middle convolution to the $\ell$-adic Fourier transformation in the étale context. Using Katz' work and Laumon's theory of local Fourier transformations we obtain a detailed description of the local monodromy and the determinant of Katz' middle convolution functor $\MC_χ$ in the tame case. The theory of local $ε$-constants then implies that the property of an étale sheaf of having an at most quadratic determinant is often preserved under $\MC_χ$ if $χ$ is quadratic.
We collect evidence in support of a conjecture of Griffiths, Green and Kerr on the arithmetic of extension classes of limiting mixed Hodge structures arising from semistable degenerations over a number field. After briefly summarizing how a result of Iritani implies this conjecture for a collection of hypergeometric Calabi-Yau threefold examples studied by Doran and Morgan, the authors investigate a sequence of (non-hypergeometric) examples in dimensions 1 through 6 arising from Katz's theory of the middle convolution. A crucial role is played by the Mumford-Tate group (of type G2) of the fami…
We compute the behaviour of Hodge data by tensor product with a unitary rank-one local system and middle convolution by a Kummer unitary rank-one local system for an irreducible variation of polarized complex Hodge structure on a punctured complex affine line. We give applications of these formulas to local systems with G_2-monodromy.
This note explains an approach to producing examples of 'generalized Kuga-Satake theory' based on establishing special cases of Simpson's conjecture that rigid local systems are motivic. This strategy is then carried out, using work of Bogner and Reiter, in a low-dimensional example, producing the first non-trivial examples of generalized Kuga-Satake theory outside of the Tannakian category of motives generated by abelian varieties. For a more robust collection of examples, see the sequel "Generalized Kuga-Satake theory and rigid local systems, II: rigid Hecke eigensheaves."
We construct global cohomology classes in the middle degree cohomology of the Shimura variety of the symplectic group $GSp_6$ compatible when one varies the level at $p$. These classes are expected constituents of an Euler system for the Galois representations appearing in these cohomology groups. As an application, we show how these classes provide elements in the Iwasawa cohomology of these representations and, by applying Perrin-Riou's machinery, $p$-adic L-functions associated to them.
We show that the compactly supported cohomology of certain $\mathrm{U}(n,n)$ or $\mathrm{Sp}(2n)$-Shimura varieties with $Γ_1(p^\infty)$-level vanishes above the middle degree. The only assumption is that we work over a CM field $F$ in which the prime $p$ splits completely. We also give an application to Galois representations for torsion in the cohomology of the locally symmetric spaces for $\mathrm{GL}_n/F$. More precisely, we use the vanishing result for Shimura varieties to eliminate the nilpotent ideal in the construction of these Galois representations. This strengthens recent results of…
In a previous work of the authors, a middle convolution operation on the category of Fuchsian differential systems was introduced. In this note we show that the middle convolution of Fuchsian systems preserves the property of global nilpotence. This leads to a globally nilpotent Fuchsian system of rank two which does not belong to the known classes of globally nilpotent rank two systems. Moreover, we give a globally nilpotent Fuchsian system of rank seven whose differential Galois group is isomorphic to the exceptional simple algebraic group of type $G_2.$
We study the Galois groups of polynomials arising from a compatible family of representations with big orthogonal monodromy. We show that the Galois groups are usually as large as possible given the constraints imposed on them by a functional equation and discriminant considerations. As an application, we consider the Frobenius polynomials arising from the middle étale cohomology of hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{P}_{\mathbb{F}_q}^{2n+1}$ of degree at least $3$. We also consider the $L$-functions of quadratic twists of fixed degree of an elliptic curve over a function field $\mathbb{F}_q(t)$. To de…
We construct an algebraic variety by resolving singularities of a quintic Calabi-Yau threefold. The middle cohomology of the threefold is shown to contain a piece coming from a pair of elliptic surfaces. The resulting quotient is a two-dimensional Galois representation. By using the Lefschetz fixed-point theorem in étale cohomology and counting points on the variety over finite fields, this Galois representation is shown to be modular.
We construct an Euler system in the cohomology of the tensor product of the Galois representations attached to two modular forms, using elements in the higher Chow groups of products of modular curves. We use this Euler system to prove a finiteness theorem for the strict Selmer group of the Galois representation when the associated p-adic Rankin--Selberg L-function is non-vanishing at s = 1.
Given a Galois étale map of varieties $π:Y\to X$ and an $\ell$-adic sheaf or derived category object $P\in D^b_c(Y,{\mathbb Q}_\ell)$, we study two cohomological operations: the tensor direct image and (in the case of perverse sheaves) the convolution direct image, which give objects of $D^b_c(X,{\mathbb Q}_\ell)$, and can be used to improve the estimates on some partial exponential sums and the number of rational points on certain varieties.
We construct a family of affinoids in the Lubin-Tate perfectoid space and their formal models such that the middle cohomology of their reductions realizes the local Langlands correspondence and the local Jacquet-Langlands correspondence for the simple supercuspidal representations. The reductions of the formal models are isomorphic to the perfections of some Artin-Schreier varieties, whose cohomology realizes primitive Galois representations. We show also the Tate conjecture for Artin-Schreier varieties associated to quadratic forms.
In a previous paper [CG], we showed how one could generalize Taylor-Wiles modularity lifting theorems [Wil95, TW95] to contexts beyond those in which the automorphic forms in question arose from the middle degree cohomology of Shimura varieties, in particular, to contexts in which the relevant automorphic forms contributed to cohomology in exactly two degrees. In this sequel, we extend our method to the general case in which Galois representations are expected to occur in cohomology, contingent on the (as yet unproven) existence of certain Galois representations with the expected properties. A…
