We study the Galois groups of polynomials arising from a compatible family of representations with big orthogonal monodromy. We show that the Galois groups are usually as large as possible given the constraints imposed on them by a functional equation and discriminant considerations. As an application, we consider the Frobenius polynomials arising from the middle étale cohomology of hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{P}_{\mathbb{F}_q}^{2n+1}$ of degree at least $3$. We also consider the $L$-functions of quadratic twists of fixed degree of an elliptic curve over a function field $\mathbb{F}_q(t)$. To determine the typical Galois group in the elliptic curve setting requires using some known cases of the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture. This extends and generalizes work of Chavdarov, Katz and Jouve.
Building on lifting results of Ramakrishna, Khare and Ramakrishna proved a purely Galois-theoretic level-raising theorem for two-dimensional odd representations of the Galois group of Q. In this paper, we generalize these techniques from type A1 to general (semi-)simple groups. We then strengthen our previous results on constructing geometric Galois representations with exceptional monodromy groups, achieving such constructions for almost all l, rather than a density-one set, and achieving greater flexibility in the Hodge numbers of the lifts; the latter improvement requires the new level-rais…
We investigate local-global compatibility for cuspidal automorphic representations $π$ for GL(2) over CM fields that are regular algebraic of weight $0$. We prove that for a Dirichlet density one set of primes $l$ and any $ι: \overline{\mathbf{Q}}_l \cong \mathbf{C}$, the $l$-adic Galois representation attached to $π$ and $ι$ has nontrivial monodromy at any $v \nmid l$ in $F$ at which $π$ is special.
We compute the Galois groups for a certain class of polynomials over the the field of rational numbers that was introduced by S. Mori and study the monodromy of corresponding hyperelliptic jacobians.
For any simple algebraic group $G$ of exceptional type, we construct geometric $\ell$-adic Galois representations with algebraic monodromy group equal to $G$, in particular producing the first such examples in types $\mathrm{F}_4$ and $\mathrm{E}_6$. To do this, we extend to general reductive groups Ravi Ramakrishna's techniques for lifting odd two-dimensional Galois representations to geometric $\ell$-adic representations.
Suppose $ρ_1, ρ_2$ are two $\ell$-adic Galois representations of the absolute Galois group of a number field, such that the algebraic monodromy group of one of the representations is connected and the representations are locally potentially equivalent at a set of places of positive upper density. We classify such pairs of representations and show that up to twisting by some representation, it is given by a pair of representations one of which is trivial and the other abelian. Consequently, assuming that the first representation has connected algebraic monodromy group, we obtain that the repres…
Let $X$ be a complete smooth variety defined over number field $K$ and $i$ an integer. The absolute Galois group of $K$ acts on the $i$th $l$-adic etale cohomology of $X$ for all $l$, producing a system of $l$-adic representations $\{Φ_l\}$. The conjectures of Grothendieck, Tate, and Mumford-Tate predict that the identity component of the algebraic monodromy group of $Φ_\ell$ admits a common reductive $Q$-form for all $l$ if $X$ is projective. Denote by $Γ_l$ and $G_l$ respectively the monodromy group and the algebraic monodromy group of $Φ_l^{ss}$, the semisimplification of $Φ_\ell$. Assuming…
We study l-independence of monodromy groups G_l of any compatible system of l-adic representations (in the sense of Serre) of number field K assuming semisimplicity. We prove that the formal character of the derived group of the identity component of G_l is independent of l and the (complexified) Lie algebra g_l of G_l satisfies an equal-rank subalgebra equivalence for all l. This equivalence is equivalent to the l-independence of the number of A_n factors for all n belonging to {6,9,10,11,...} and the parity of A_4 factors in g_l.
We exhibit a rigid local system of rank six on the affine line in characteristic $p=5$ whose arithmetic and geometric monodromy groups are the finite group $2.J_2$ ($J_2$ the Hall-Janko sporadic group) in one of its two (Galois-conjugate) irreducible representation of degree six.
Let $X$ be a smooth connected algebraic curve over an algebraically closed field $k$. We study the deformation of $\ell$-adic Galois representations of the function field of $X$ while keeping the local Galois representations at all places undeformed.
We describe algorithms to compute fixed fields, splitting fields and towers of radical extensions without using polynomial factorisation in towers or constructing any field containing the splitting field, instead extending Galois group computations for this task. We also describe the computation of geometric Galois groups (monodromy groups) and their use in computing absolute factorizations.
We construct, over any CM field, compatible systems of l-adic Galois representations that appear in the cohomology of algebraic varieties and have (for all l) algebraic monodromy groups equal to the exceptional group of type E6.
In 2013 Elkies described a method for bounding the transitivity degree of Galois groups. Our goal is to give additional applications of this technique, in particular verifying that the monodromy group of the degree-276 cover defined over a degree-12 number field computed by Monien is isomorphic to the sporadic Conway group Co3.
We consider a large class of so-called dynamical Belyi maps and study the Galois groups of iterates of such maps. From the combinatorial invariants of the maps, we construct a useful presentation of their Galois groups as subgroups of automorphism groups of regular trees, in terms of iterated wreath products. This allows us to study the behavior of the monodromy groups under specialization of the maps, and to derive applications to dynamical sequences.
We compute new polynomials with Galois group $M_{11}$ over $\mathbb{Q}(t)$. These polynomials stem from various families of covers of $\mathbb{P}^1\mathbb{C}$ ramified over at least 4 points. Each of these families has features that make a detailed study interesting. Some of the polynomials lead, via specialization, to number fields with very small discriminant or few ramified primes.
In this paper we develop a general method to prove independence of algebraic monodromy groups in compatible systems of representations, and we apply it to deduce independence results for compatible systems both in automorphic and in positive characteristic settings. In the abstract case, we prove an independence result for compatible systems of Lie-irreducible representations, from which we deduce an independence result for compatible systems admitting what we call a Lie-irreducible decomposition. In the case of geometric compatible systems of Galois representations arising from certain classe…
In this article, we prove that for a convergent sequence of residually absolutely irreducible representations of the absolute Galois group of a number field $F$ with coefficients in a domain finite over a power series ring over a $p$-adic integer ring, the set of places of $F$ where some of the representations ramifies has density zero. Using this, we extend a result of Das--Rajan to such convergent sequences. We also establish a strong multiplicity one theorem for big Galois representations.
We prove many new cases of the Inverse Galois Problem for those simple groups arising from orthogonal groups over finite fields. For example, we show that the finite simple groups Omega_{2n+1}(p) and POmega_{4n}^+(p) both occur as the Galois group of a Galois extension of the rationals for all integers n>1 and all primes p>3. We obtain our representations by studying families of twists of elliptic curves and using some known cases of the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture along with a big monodromy result of Hall.
Let $L(x)$ be any $q$-linearized polynomial with coefficients in $\mathbb{F}_q$, of degree $q^n$. We consider the Galois group of $L(x)+tx$ over $\mathbb{F}_q(t)$, where $t$ is transcendental over $\mathbb{F}_q$. We prove that when $n$ is a prime, the Galois group is always $GL(n,q)$, except when $L(x)=x^{q^n}$. Equivalently, we prove that the arithmetic monodromy group of $L(x)/x$ is $GL(n,q)$.
This is a report of a talk given at the Oberwolfach workshop on "cohomology of finite groups: Interactions and applications" which was held during July 25th - July 31st, 2010. It is an announcement of some of the results (with motivation) and their applications from the paper "Quotients of absolute Galois groups which determine the entire Galois cohomology"; see arXiv:0905.1364.
Let $p$ be an odd prime and $e_p$ be its irregularity index. If $4e_p+8 <\frac{p-1}{2}$ we construct a Galois representation with image in the diagonal torus of $\op{GSp}_4(\Fp)$ that lifts to a characteristic $0$ representation unramified at all primes $\ell\neq p$ with image containing a finite index subgroup of $\Symp$.
We prove an analogue of the Tate isogeny conjecture and the semi-simplicity conjecture for overconvergent crystalline Dieudonné modules of abelian varieties defined over global function fields of characteristic $p$. As a corollary we deduce that monodromy groups of such overconvergent crystalline Dieudonné modules are reductive, and after a finite base change of coefficients their connected components are the same as the connected components of monodromy groups of Galois representations on the corresponding $l$-adic Tate modules, for $l$ different from $p$. We also show such a result for gener…
We classify rigid local systems of rank 7 whose monodromy group is dense in the simple algebraic group of type G2. This leads to motives with Galois group G2.
Let k be a field not of characteristic two and L be a set of almost all rational primes invertible in k. Suppose we have a variety X/k and strictly compatible system {M_ell -> X : ell in L} of constructible F_ell-sheaves. If the system is orthogonally or symplectically self-dual, then the geometric monodromy group of M_ell is a subgroup of a corresponding isometry group G_ell over F_ell, and we say it has big monodromy if it contains the derived subgroup DG_ell=[G_ell,G_ell]. We prove a theorem which gives sufficient conditions for M_ell to have big monodromy. We apply the theorem to explicit …
We present all Belyi maps P^1(C) -> P^1(C) having almost simple primitive monodromy groups (not isomorphic to A_n or S_n) containing rigid and rational generating triples of degree between 50 and 250. This also leads to new polynomials having almost simple Galois groups over Q(t).
We consider the Galois representation associated with a finite slope $p$-adic family of modular forms. We prove that the Lie algebra of its image contains a congruence Lie subalgebra of a non-trivial level. We describe the largest such level in terms of the congruences of the family with $p$-adic CM forms.
This document is an expanded version of a lecture presented at a conference on "Thin Groups and Superstrong Approximation" held at the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute in February 2012. Superstrong approximation is a criterion on a finitely generated group, saying that certain Cayley graphs associated to finite quotients of the group form an expander family. In recent years, our knowledge about superstrong approximation for infinite-index Zariski-dense subgroups of arithmetic lattices ("thin groups") has drastically improved. We briefly survey the construction of monodromy groups, disc…
Let $E$ be an abelian scheme over a geometrically connected variety $X$ defined over $k$, a finitely generated field over $\mathbb{Q}$. Let $η$ be the generic point of $X$ and $x\in X$ a closed point. If $\mathfrak{g}_l$ and $(\mathfrak{g}_l)_x$ are the Lie algebras of the $l$-adic Galois representations for abelian varieties $E_η$ and $E_x$, then $(\mathfrak{g}_l)_x$ is embedded in $\mathfrak{g}_l$ by specialization. We prove that the set $\{x\in X$ closed point $| (\mathfrak{g}_l)_x\subsetneq \mathfrak{g}_l\}$ is independent of $l$ and confirm Conjecture 5.5 in [2].
Given a field $K$, a polynomial $f \in K[x]$, and a suitable element $t \in K$, the set of preimages of $t$ under the iterates $f^{\circ n}$ carries a natural structure of a $d$-ary tree. We study conditions under which the absolute Galois group of $K$ acts on the tree by the full group of automorphisms. When $K=\mathbb{Q}$ we exhibit examples of polynomials of every even degree with maximal Galois action on the preimage tree, partially affirming a conjecture of Odoni. We also study the case of $K=F(t)$ and $f \in F[x]$ in which the corresponding Galois groups are the monodromy groups of the r…
Suppose \( ρ_1 \) and \( ρ_2 \) are two pure Galois representations of the absolute Galois group of a number field $K$ of weights \( k_1 \) and \( k_2 \) respectively, having equal normalized Frobenius traces \( Tr(ρ_1(σ_v)) /Nv^{k_1/2}\) and \( Tr(ρ_2(σ_v)) /Nv^{k_2/2}\) at a set of primes \( v\) of $K$ with positive upper density. Assume further that the algebraic monodromy group of $ρ_1$ is connected and the repesentation is absolutely irreducible. We prove that \( ρ_1 \) and \( ρ_2 \) are twists of each other by power of a Tate twist times a character of finite order. We apply this to modu…
Given a natural number n and a number field K, we show the existence of an integer \ell_0 such that for any prime number \ell\geq \ell_0, there exists a finite extension F/K, unramified in all places above \ell, together with a principally polarized abelian variety A of dimension n over F such that the resulting \ell-torsion representation ρ_{A,\ell} from G_F to GSp(A[\ell](\bar{F})) is surjective and everywhere tamely ramified. In particular, we realize GSp_{2n}(\mathbb{F}_\ell) as the Galois group of a finite tame extension of number fields F'/F such that F is unramified above \ell.
Associated to an abelian variety over a number field are several interesting and related groups: the motivic Galois group, the Mumford-Tate group, $\ell$-adic monodromy groups, and the Sato-Tate group. Assuming the Mumford-Tate conjecture, we show that from two well chosen Frobenius polynomials of our abelian variety, we can recover the identity component of these groups (or at least an inner form), up to isomorphism, along with their natural representations. We also obtain a practical probabilistic algorithm to compute these groups by considering more and more Frobenius polynomials; the group…
We formulate a notion of purity for $p$-adic big Galois representations and pseudorepresentations of Weil groups of $\ell$-adic number fields for $\ell\neq p$. This is obtained by showing that all powers of the monodromy of any big Galois representation stay "as large as possible" under pure specializations. The role of purity for families in the study of the variation of local Euler factors, local automorphic types along irreducible components, the intersection points of irreducible components of $p$-adic families of automorphic Galois representations is illustrated using the examples of Hida…
In this paper we prove a Gross-Zagier type formula for the anticyclotomic p-adic L-function of an elliptic modular form f of higher weight and of multiplicative type at p. For such f we also decribe explicitely the local Galois representation attached to it at p and compare the Fontaine-Mazur and Teitelbaum L-invariants.
We prove the compatibility of local and global Langlands correspondences for $GL_n$ up to semisimplification for the Galois representations constructed by Harris-Lan-Taylor-Thorne and Scholze. More precisely, let $r_p(π)$ denote an $n$-dimensional $p$-adic representation of the Galois group of a CM field $F$ attached to a regular algebraic cuspidal automorphic representation $π$ of $GL_n(\mathbb{A}_F)$. We show that the restriction of $r_p(π)$ to the decomposition group of a place $v\nmid p$ of $F$ corresponds up to semisimplification to $rec(π_v)$, the image of $π_v$ under the local Langlands…
Associated to an abelian variety $A$ of dimension $g$ over a number field $K$ is a Galois representation $ρ_A\colon Gal(\bar{K}/K)\to GL_{2g}(\hat{\mathbb{Z}})$. The representation $ρ_A$ encodes the Galois action on the torsion points of $A$ and its image is an interesting invariant of $A$ that contains a lot of arithmetic information. We consider abelian varieties over $K$ parametrized by the $K$-points of a nonempty open subvariety $U\subseteq \mathbb{P}^n_K$. We show that away from a set of density $0$, the image of $ρ_A$ will be very large; more precisely, it will have uniformly bounded in…
Each finite $p$-perfect group $G$ ($p$ a prime) has a universal central $p$-extension. For a perfect group these central extensions come from its {\sl Schur multiplier}. Serre gave a Stiefel-Whitney class approach to analyzing spin covers of alternating groups ($p=2$) aimed at geometric covering space problems. This included the regular version of the Inverse Galois Problem. Every finite simple group with order divisible by $p$ has an infinite string of perfect centerless group covers exhibiting nontrivial Schur multipliers for the prime $p$. Sequences of moduli spaces of curves attached to $G…
Let $K$ be a global field of characteristic different from 2 and $u(x)\in K[x]$ be an irreducible polynomial of even degree $2g\ge 6$, whose Galois group over $K$ is either the full symmetric group $S_{2g}$ or the alternating group $A_{2g}$. We describe explicitly how to choose (infinitely many) pairs of distinct elements $t_1, t_2$ of $K$ such that the $g$-dimensional jacobian of a hyperelliptic curve $y^2=(x-t_1)(x-t_2))u(x)$ has no nontrivial endomorphisms over an algebraic closure of $K$ and has big $\ell$-adic monodromy.
In this paper we introduce a space with some additional topologies using filter bases and renew the definition of Riemann surfaces of algebraic functions. We then present a Galois correspondence between these Riemann surfaces and their deck transformation groups. We also extend the monodromy theorem to the case that the global analytic function possesses singularities, which can be non-isolated.
In the first three sections, we develop some basic facts about hypergeometric sheaves on the multiplicative group ${\mathbb G}_m$ in characteristic $p >0$. In the fourth and fifth sections, we specialize to quite special classses of hypergeomtric sheaves. We give relatively "simple" formulas for their trace functions, and a criterion for them to have finite monodromy. In the next section, we prove that three of them have finite monodromy groups. We then give some results on finite complex linear groups. We next use these group theoretic results to show that one of our local systems, of rank $24…
We give a quantitative version of a result due to N. Katz about L-functions of elliptic curves over function fields over finite fields. Roughly speaking, Katz's Theorem states that, on average over a suitably chosen algebraic family, the L-function of an elliptic curve over a function field becomes "as irreducible as possible" when seen as a polynomial with rational coefficients, as the cardinality of the field of constants grows. A quantitative refinement is obtained as a corollary of our main result which gives an estimate for the proportion of elliptic curves studied whose L-functions have …
Given an irreducible bivariate polynomial $f(t,x)\in \mathbb{Q}[t,x]$, what groups $H$ appear as the Galois group of $f(t_0,x)$ for infinitely many $t_0\in \mathbb{Q}$? How often does a group $H$ as above appear as the Galois group of $f(t_0,x)$, $t_0\in \mathbb{Q}$? We give an answer for $f$ of large $x$-degree with alternating or symmetric Galois group over $\mathbb{Q}(t)$. This is done by determining the low genus subcovers of coverings $\tilde{X}\rightarrow \mathbb{P}^1_{\mathbb{C}}$ with alternating or symmetric monodromy groups.

In this article we consider mod p modular Galois representations which are unramified at p such that the Frobenius element at p acts through a scalar matrix. The principal result states that the multiplicity of any such representation is bigger than 1.
Let $F_n$ denote the Fermat curve given by $x^n+y^n=z^n$ and let $μ_n$ denote the Galois module of $n$th roots of unity. It is known that the integral homology group $H_1(F_n,\Z)$ is a cyclic $\Z[μ_n\times μ_n]$ module. In this paper, we prove this result using modular symbols and the modular description of Fermat curves; moreover we find a basis for the integral homology group $H_1(F_n,\Z)$. We also construct a family of Fermat curves using the Fermat surface and compute its monodromy.
We compute a family of coverings with four ramification points, defined over $\mathbb{Q}$, with regular Galois group $PSL_5(2)$. On the one hand, this is (to my knowledge) the first explicit polynomial with group $PSL_5(2)$ over $\mathbb{Q}(t)$. On the other hand, it also positively answers the question whether $PSL_5(2)$ is the monodromy group of a rational function over $\mathbb{Q}$. At least this does not follow from considering class triples in $PSL_5(2)$, as there are no rigid, rational genus-zero triples. Also, for 4-tuples, our family is the only one with a Hurwitz curve of genus zero (…
