Itenberg and Shustin's pseudoholomorphic curve patchworking is in principle more flexible than Viro's original algebraic one. It was natural to wonder if the former method allows one to construct non-algebraic objects. In this paper we construct the first examples of patchworked real pseudoholomorphic curves in $Σ_n$ whose position with respect to the pencil of lines cannot be realised by any homologous real algebraic curve.
Patchworking is a construction of a one-parameter family of real algebraic hypersurfaces. For sufficiently small positive values of the parameter, the hypersurfaces can be obtained by gluing of given hypersurfaces topologically. The author invented patchworking in 1979-81 and used it for constructing of real plane algebraic curves with complicated prescribed topology. In particular, it helped to complete isotopy classification of nonsingular plane projective real algebraic curves of degree 7. A special case of the patchworking, combinatorial patchworking, can be considered as Litvinov-Maslov q…
We prove a new patchworking theorem for singular algebraic curves, which states the following. Given a complex toric threefold $Y$ which fibers over ${\mathbb C}$ with a reduced reducible zero fiber $Y_0$ and other fibers $Y_t$ smooth, and given a reduced curve $C_0\subset Y_0$, the theorem provides a sufficient condition for the existence of a one-parametric family of curves $C_t\subset Y_t$, which induces an equisingular deformation for some singular points of $C_0$ and certain prescribed deformations for the other singularities. As application we give a comment on a recent theorem by G. Mik…
Patchworking theorems serve as a basic element of the correspondence between tropical and algebraic curves, which is a core of the tropical enumerative geometry. We present a new version of a patchworking theorem which relates plane tropical curves with complex and real algebraic curves having prescribed multiple points. It can be used to compute Welschinger invariants of non-toric Del Pezzo surfaces.
In the 1990's, Itenberg and Haas studied the relations between combinatorial data in Viro's patchworking and the topology of the resulting non-singular real algebraic curves in the projective plane. Using recent results from Renaudineau and Shaw on real algebraic curves near the non-singular tropical limit, we continue the study of Itenberg and Haas inside any non-singular projective toric surface. We give new Haas' like criteria for patchworking non-singular real algebraic curves with prescribed number of connected components, in terms of twisted edges on a non-singular tropical curve. We the…
We prove that Viro's patchworking produces real algebraic curves with the maximal number of real inflection points. In particular this implies that maximally inflected real algebraic $M$-curves realize many isotopy types. The strategy we adopt in this paper is tropical: we study tropical limits of inflection points of classical plane algebraic curves. The main tropical tool we use to understand these tropical inflection points are tropical modifications.
We construct a polynomial of degree d in two variables whose Hessian curve has (d-2)^2 connected components using Viro patchworking. In particular, this implies the existence of a smooth real algebraic surface of degree d in RP^3 whose parabolic curve is smooth and has d(d-2)^2 connected components.
Enumerative algebraic geometry deals with problems of counting geometric objects defined algebraically, An important class of enumerative problems is that of counting curves: given a class of curves in some projective variety defined by fixing some algebraic or geometric invariants (such as degree, genus and types of singularities), the problem usually takes the form of "how many curves of that class pass through a configuration of n points in general position?" Tropical Geometry deals with certain piecewise-linear complexes, which arise as degeneration of families of complex algebraic varieti…
We call a real algebraic hypersurface in $(\mathbb{C}^*)^n$ simplicial if it is given by a real Laurent polynomial in $n$-variables that has exactly $n+1$ monomials with non-zero coefficients and such that the convex hull in $\mathbb{R}^n$ of the $n+1$ points of $\mathbb{Z} ^n$ corresponding to the exponents is a non-degenerate $n$-dimensional simplex. Such hypersurfaces are natural building blocks from which more complicated objects can be constructed, for example using O. Viro's Patchworking method. Drawing inspiration from related work by G. Kerr and I. Zharkov, we describe the action of th…
We complete the topological classification of real algebraic non-singular curves of bidegree $(5, 5)$ on the quadric ellipsoid. We show in particular that previously known restrictions form a complete system for this bidegree. Therefore, the main part of the paper concerns the construction of real algebraic curves. Our strategy is first to reduce to the construction of curves in the second Hirzebruch surface by degenerating the quadric ellipsoid to the quadratic cone. Next, we combine different classical construction methods on toric surfaces, such as Dessin d'enfants and and Viro's patchworki…
Given a real hyperelliptic algebraic curve $X$ with non-empty real part and a real effective divisor $\mc{D}$ arising via pullback from $\mathbb{P}^1$ under the hyperelliptic structure map, we study the real inflection points of the associated complete real linear series $|\mc{D}|$ on $X$. To do so we use Viro's patchworking of real plane curves, recast in the context of some Berkovich spaces studied by M. Jonsson. Our method gives a simpler and more explicit alternative to limit linear series on metrized complexes of curves, as developed by O. Amini and M. Baker, for curves embedded in toric …
We give a theorem on the effective non-vanishing problem for algebraic surfaces in positive characteristic. For the Kawamata-Viehweg vanishing, the logarithmic Kollar vanishing and the logarithmic semipositivity, we give their counterexamples on ruled surfaces in positive characteristic.
It is now a classical result that an algebraic space locally of finite type over $\mathbf{C}$ is analytifiable if and only if it is locally separated. In this paper we study non-archimedean analytifications of algebraic spaces. We construct a quotient for any etale non-archimedean analytic equivalence relation whose diagonal is a closed immersion, and deduce that any separated algebraic space locally of finite type over any non-archimedean field $k$ is analytifiable in both the category of rigid spaces and the category of analytic spaces over $k$. Also, though local separatedness remains a nec…
A criterion for the existence of a birational embedding into a projective plane with non-collinear Galois points for algebraic curves is presented. A new example of a plane curve with non-collinear Galois points as an application is described. Furthermore, a new characterization of the Fermat curve in terms of non-collinear Galois points is presented.
We review the theory of non-commutative deformations of sheaves and describe a versal deformation by using an A-infinity algebra and the change of differentials of an injective resolution. We give some explicit non-trivial examples.
A projective manifold is algebraically hyperbolic if the degree of any curve is bounded from above by its genus times a constant, which is independent from the curve. This is a property which follows from Kobayashi hyperbolicity. We prove that hyperkahler manifolds are non algebraically hyperbolic when the Picard rank is at least 3, or if the Picard rank is 2 and the SYZ conjecture on existence of Lagrangian fibrations is true. We also prove that if the automorphism group of a hyperkahler manifold is infinite then it is algebraically non-hyperbolic.
We show that in a certain subfamily of the Kuranishi family of any half Inoue surface the algebraic dimensions of the fibers jump downwards at special points of the parameter space showing that the upper semi-continuity of algebraic dimensions in any sense does not hold in general for families of compact non-Kaehler manifolds. In the Kaehler case, the upper semi-continuity always holds true in a certain weak sense.
A flag domain D = G/V for G a simple real non-compact group G with compact Cartan subgroup is non-classical if it does not fiber holomorphically or anti-holomorphically over a Hermitian symmetric space. We prove that any two points in a non-classical domain D can be joined by a finite chain of compact subvarieties of D. Then we prove that for F an infinite, finitely generated discrete subgroup of G, the analytic space F\D does not have an algebraic structure.
For $θ$ a non-algebraic point on a quasi projective variety over a number field, I prove that $θ$ has an approximation by a series of algebraic points of bounded height and degree which is essentially best possible. Applications of this result will include a proof of a slightly strengthened version of the Philippon criterion, some new algebraic independence criteria, statements concerning metric transcendence theory on varieties of arbitrary dimension, and a rather accurate estimate for the number of algebraic points of bounded height and degree on quasi projective varieties over number fields…
We obtain the trace map image of the values of certain harmonic volumes for some quotients of Fermat curves. This provides the algorithm that the algebraic cycles called by the k-th Ceresa cycles are not algebraically equivalent to zero in the Jacobian varieties.
We study non-commutative projective lines over not necessarily algebraic bimodules. In particular, we give a complete description of their categories of coherent sheaves and show they are derived equivalent to certain bimodule species. This allows us to classify modules over these species and thus generalize, and give a geometric interpretation for, results of C. Ringel.
We show that there exist non-trivial families of algebraic varieties for which all the fibers above rational points (or even above points of odd degree) are torsors of abelian varieties representing nonzero elements of their Shafarevich-Tate groups.
Let $\otimes$ be the map which classifies the tensor product of two line bundles, an extension of this map to the space of all codimension 1 algebraic cycles is constructed. It is proved that this extension cannot exist in codimension greater than 1.
In this paper we study the spaces of non-compact real algebraic curves, i.e. pairs $(P,τ)$, where $P$ is a compact Riemann surface with a finite number of holes and punctures and $τ:P\to P$ is an anti-holomorphic involution. We describe the uniformisation of non-compact real algebraic curves by Fuchsian groups. We construct the spaces of non-compact real algebraic curves and describe their connected components. We prove that any connected component is homeomorphic to a quotient of a finite-dimensional real vector space by a discrete group and determine the dimensions of these vector spaces.
We study the algebraic dimension a(X) of a compact hyperkaehler manfold of dimension 2n. We show that a(X) is at most n unless X is projective. If a compact Kaehler manifold with algebraic dimension 0 and Kodaira dimension 0 has a minimal model, then only the values 0,n and 2n are possible. In case of middle dimension, the algebraic reduction is holomorphic Lagrangian. If n = 2, then - without any assumptions - the algebraic dimension only takes the values 0,2 and 4. The paper gives structure results for "generalised hyperkaehler" manifolds and studies nef lines bundles.
A covariant functor from the category of generic complex algebraic curves to a category of the AF-algebras is constructed. The construction is based on a representation of the Teichmueller space of a curve by the measured foliations due to Douady, Hubbard, Masur and Thurston. The functor maps isomorphic algebraic curves to the stably isomorphic AF-algebras.
This paper concerns character sheaves of connected reductive algebraic groups defined over non-Archimedean local fields and their relation with characters of smooth representations. Although character sheaves were devised with characters of representations of finite groups of Lie type in mind, character sheaves are perfectly well defined for reductive algebraic groups over any algebraically closed field. Nevertheless, the relation between character sheaves of an algebraic group $G$ over an algebraic closure of a field $K$ and characters of representations of $G(K)$ is well understood only when…
We prove that there are no regular algebraic hypersurfaces with non-zero constant mean curvature in the Euclidean space $\mathbb R^{n+1}$, $n\geq 2$, defined by polynomials of odd degree. Also we prove that the hyperspheres and the round cylinders are the only regular algebraic hypersurfaces with non-zero constant mean curvature in $\mathbb R^{n+1}$, $n\geq 2$, defined by polynomials of degree less than or equal to three. These results give partial answers to a question raised by Barbosa and do Carmo.
For every $n\ge 0$, we construct classes in the Brown-Peterson cohomology $BP\langle n \rangle$ of smooth projective complex algebraic varieties which are not in the image of the cycle map from the corresponding motivic Brown-Peterson cohomology. This generalizes the examples of Atiyah and Hirzebruch to all finite levels in the Brown-Peterson tower.
This is a detailed write-up of Kollár's course at the EMS summer school in Algebraic Geometry in Eger, Hungary, August 1996. The topics include definitions and examples of rational and unirational varieties, with special attention to varieties defined over non-algebraically closed fields, Segre's theorem on non-rationality of cubic surfaces of Picard number one, Manin's theorem that birationally equivalent cubic surfaces of Picard number one are projectively equivalent, and Kollár's method for constructing examples of low degree non-rational hypersurfaces. Includes many exercises and their sol…
Non-dicritical codimension one foliations on projective spaces of dimension four or higher always have an invariant algebraic hypersurface. The proof relies on a strengthening of a result by Rossi on the algebraization/continuation of analytic subvarieties of projective spaces.
The existence problem for holomorphic structures on vector bundles over non-algebraic surfaces is in general still open. We solve this problem in the case of rank 2 vector bundles over K3 surfaces and in the case of vector bundles of arbitrary rank over all known surfaces of class VII. Our methods, which are based on Donaldson theory and deformation theory, can be used to solve the existence problem of holomorphic vector bundles on further classes of non-algebraic surfaces.
We prove non-Archimedean analogs of results of Noguchi and Winkelmann showing algebraic degeneracy of rigid analytic maps to projective varieties omitting an effective divisor with sufficiently many irreducible components relative to the rank of the group they generate in the Neron-Severi group of the variety.
