Recently, Kitaev and Remmel [Classifying descents according to parity, Annals of Combinatorics, to appear 2007] refined the well-known permutation statistic ``descent'' by fixing parity of one of the descent's numbers. Results in that paper were extended and generalized in several ways. In this paper, we shall fix a set partition of the natural numbers $N$, $(N_1, ..., N_t)$, and we study the distribution of descents, levels, and rises according to whether the first letter of the descent, rise, or level lies in $N_i$ over the set of words over the alphabet $[k]$. In particular, we refine and generalize some of the results in [Counting occurrences of some subword patterns, Discrete Mathematics and Theoretical Computer Science 6 (2003), 001-012.].
In the present article we shown a formula to compute the number of all matrices over the finite field $F$ whit prescribed eigenvalues. Using this formula we obtain one inequality for the number of $(k+1)$-potent elements over finite rings.
We enumerate derangements with descents in prescribed positions. A generating function was given by Guo-Niu Han and Guoce Xin in 2007. We give a combinatorial proof of this result, and derive several explicit formulas. To this end, we consider fixed point $λ$-coloured permutations, which are easily enumerated. Several formulae regarding these numbers are given, as well as a generalisation of Euler's difference tables. We also prove that except in a trivial special case, if a permutation $π$ is chosen uniformly among all permutations on $n$ elements, the events that $π$ has descents in a set $S…
Given sets X and Y of positive integers and a permutation sigma = sigma_1, sigma_2, ..., sigma_n in S_n, an X,Y-descent of sigma is a descent pair sigma_i > sigma_{i+1} whose "top" sigma_i is in X and whose "bottom" sigma_{i+1} is in Y. We give two formulas for the number P_{n,s}^{X,Y} of sigma in S_n with s X,Y-descents. P_{n,s}^{X,Y} is also shown to be a hit number of a certain Ferrers board. This work generalizes results of Kitaev and Remmel on counting descent pairs whose top (or bottom) is equal to 0 mod k.
We count the number of polynomials over finite fields with prescribed leading coefficients and a given number of linear factors. This is equivalent to counting codewords in Reed-Solomon codes which are at a certain distance from a received word. We first apply the generating function approach, which is recently developed by the author and collaborators, to derive expressions for the number of monic polynomials with prescribed leading coefficients and linear factors. We then apply Li and Wan's sieve formula to simplify the expressions in some special cases. Our results extend and improve some r…
This paper deals with the distribution of descent number in standard Young tableaux of certain shapes. A simple explicit formula is presented for the number of tableaux of any shape with two rows, with any specified number of descents. For shapes of three rows with one cell in the third row recursive formulas are given, and are solved in certain cases.
A descent of a labeled digraph is a directed edge (s, t) with s > t. We count strong tournaments, strong digraphs, and acyclic digraphs by descents and edges. To count strong tournaments we use Eulerian generating functions and to count strong and acyclic digraphs we use a new type of generating function that we call a graphic Eulerian generating function.
We continue our study on counting irreducible polynomials over a finite field with prescribed coefficients. We set up a general combinatorial framework using generating functions with coefficients from a group algebra which is generated by equivalent classes of polynomials with prescribed coefficients. Simplified expressions are derived for some special cases. Our results extend some earlier results.
We define new statistics, (c, d)-descents, on the colored permutation groups Z_r \wr S_n and compute the distribution of these statistics on the elements in these groups. We use some combinatorial approaches, recurrences, and generating functions manipulations to obtain our results.
We present refined enumeration formulas for lattice paths in $\mathbb{Z}^2$ with two kinds of steps, by keeping track of the number of descents (i.e., turns in a given direction), the major index (i.e., the sum of the positions of the descents), and the number of crossings. One formula considers crossings between a path and a fixed line; the other considers crossings between two paths. Building on the first paper of the series, which used lattice path bijections to give the enumeration with respect to major index and crossings, we obtain a refinement that keeps track of the number of descents.…
We investigate Mahonian and Eulerian probability distributions given by inversions and descents in general finite Coxeter groups. We provide uniform formulas for the means and variances in terms of Coxeter group data in both cases. We also provide uniform formulas for the double-Eulerian probability distribution of the sum of descents and inverse descents. We finally establish necessary and sufficient conditions for general sequences of Coxeter groups of increasing rank under which Mahonian and Eulerian probability distributions satisfy central and local limit theorems.
We find the exponential generating function for permutations with all valleys even and all peaks odd, and use it to determine the asymptotics for its coefficients, answering a question posed by Liviu Nicolaescu. The generating function can be expressed as the reciprocal of a sum involving Euler numbers. We give two proofs of the formula. The first uses a system of differential equations. The second proof derives the generating function directly from general permutation enumeration techniques, using noncommutative symmetric functions. The generating function is an "alternating" analogue of Davi…
In this paper, we consider the number of occurrences of descents, ascents, 123-subwords, 321-subwords, peaks and valleys in flattened permutations, which were recently introduced by Callan in his study of finite set partitions. For descents and ascents, we make use of the kernel method and obtain an explicit formula (in terms of Eulerian polynomials) for the distribution on $\mathcal{S}_n$ in the flattened sense. For the other four patterns in question, we develop a unified approach to obtain explicit formulas for the comparable distributions. We find that the formulas so obtained for 123- and…
A bijection $Φ$ is presented between plane bipolar orientations with prescribed numbers of vertices and faces, and non-intersecting triples of upright lattice paths with prescribed extremities. This yields a combinatorial proof of the following formula due to R. Baxter for the number $Θ_{ij}$ of plane bipolar orientations with $i$ non-polar vertices and $j$ inner faces: $Θ_{ij}=2\frac{(i+j)!(i+j+1)!(i+j+2)!}{i!(i+1)!(i+2)!j!(j+1)!(j+2)!}$. In addition, it is shown that $Φ$ specializes into the bijection of Bernardi and Bonichon between Schnyder woods and non-crossing pairs of Dyck words.
For various quadruple systems F, we give asymptotically sharp lower bounds on the number of copies of F in a quadruple system with a prescribed number of vertices and edges. Our results extend those of Furedi, Keevash, Pikhurko, Simonovits and Sudakov who proved under the same conditions that there is one copy of $F$. Our proofs use the hypergraph removal Lemma and stability results for the corresponding Turan problem proved by the above authors.
By a famous result of Doyen, Hubaut and Vandensavel \cite{DHV}, the 2-rank of a Steiner triple system on $2^n-1$ points is at least $2^n -1 -n$, and equality holds only for the classical point-line design in the projective geometry $PG(n-1,2)$. It follows from results of Assmus \cite{A} that, given any integer $t$ with $1 \leq t \leq n-1$, there is a code $C_{n,t}$ containing representatives of all isomorphism classes of STS$(2^n-1)$ with 2-rank at most $2^n -1 -n + t$. Using a mixture of coding theoretic, geometric, design theoretic and combinatorial arguments, we prove a general formula for …
We establish a combinatorial connection between the sequence $(i_{n,k})$ counting the involutions on $n$ letters with $k$ descents and the sequence $(a_{n,k})$ enumerating the semistandard Young tableaux on $n$ cells with $k$ symbols. This allows us to show that the sequences $(i_{n,k})$ are not log-concave for some values of $n$, hence answering a conjecture due to F. Brenti.
The Goulden-Jackson cluster method is a powerful tool for counting words by occurrences of prescribed subwords, and was adapted by Elizalde and Noy for counting permutations by occurrences of prescribed consecutive patterns. In this paper, we lift the cluster method for permutations to the Malvenuto-Reutenauer algebra. Upon applying standard homomorphisms, our result specializes to both the cluster method for permutations as well as a q-analogue which keeps track of the inversion number statistic. We construct additional homomorphisms using the theory of shuffle-compatibility, leading to furth…
We consider lattice walks in the plane starting at the origin, remaining in the first quadrant and made of West, South and North-East steps. In 1965, Germain Kreweras discovered a remarkably simple formula giving the number of these walks (with prescribed length and endpoint). Kreweras' proof was very involved and several alternative derivations have been proposed since then. But the elegant simplicity of the counting formula remained unexplained. We give the first purely combinatorial explanation of this formula. Our approach is based on a bijection between Kreweras walks and triangulations w…
Using a result of Gessel and Reutenauer, we find a simple formula for the number of cyclic permutations with a given descent set, by expressing it in terms of ordinary descent numbers (i.e., those counting all permutations with a given descent set). We then use this formula to show that, for almost all sets $I \subseteq [n-1]$, the fraction of size-$n$ permutations with descent set $I$ which are $n$-cycles is asymptotically $1/n$. As a special case, we recover a result of Stanley for alternating cycles. We also use our formula to count the cycles that do not have two consecutive descents.
We study the number of meromorphic functions on a Riemann surface with given critical values and prescribed multiplicities of critical points and values. When the Riemann surface is $\CP^1$ and the function is a polynomial, we give an elementary way of finding this number. In the general case, we show that, as the multiplicities of critical points tend to infinity, the asymptotic for the number of meromorphic functions is given by the volume of some space of graphs glued from circles. We express this volume as a matrix integral.
Let $T_n$ be the set of 321-avoiding permutations of order $n$. Two properties of $T_n$ are proved: (1) The {\em last descent} and {\em last index minus one} statistics are equidistributed over $T_n$, and also over subsets of permutations whose inverse has an (almost) prescribed descent set. An analogous result holds for Dyck paths. (2) The sign-and-last-descent enumerators for $T_{2n}$ and $T_{2n+1}$ are essentially equal to the last-descent enumerator for $T_n$. The proofs use a recursion formula for an appropriate multivariate generating function.
We obtain simple quadratic recurrence formulas counting bipartite maps on surfaces with prescribed degrees (in particular, $2k$-angulations), and constellations. These formulas are the fastest known way of computing these numbers. Our work is a natural extension of previous works on integrable hierarchies (2-Toda and KP), namely the Pandharipande recursion for Hurwitz numbers (proven by Okounkov and simplified by Dubrovin-Yang-Zagier), as well as formulas for several models of maps (Goulden-Jackson, Carrell-Chapuy, Kazarian-Zograf). As for those formulas, a bijective interpretation is still to…
We study the generating function of descent numbers for the permutations with descent pairs of prescribed parities, the distribution of which turns out to be a refinement of median Genocchi numbers. We prove the $γ$-positivity for the polynomial and derive the generating function for the $γ$-vectors, expressed in the form of continued fraction. We also come up with an artificial statistic that gives a $q$-analogue of the $γ$-positivity for the permutations with descents only allowed from an odd value to an odd value.
We prove several identities expressing polynomials counting permutations by various descent statistics in terms of Eulerian polynomials, extending results of Stembridge, Petersen, and Brändén. Additionally, we find $q$-exponential generating functions for $q$-analogues of these descent statistic polynomials that also keep track of the inversion number or inverse major index. We also present identities relating several of these descent statistic polynomials to refinements of type B Eulerian polynomials and flag descent polynomials by the number of negative letters of a signed permutation. Our m…
Let $F$ be a graph which contains an edge whose deletion reduces its chromatic number. We prove tight bounds on the number of copies of $F$ in a graph with a prescribed number of vertices and edges. Our results extend those of Simonovits, who proved that there is one copy of $F$, and of Rademacher, Erd\H os and Lovász-Simonovits, who proved similar counting results when $F$ is a complete graph. One of the simplest cases of our theorem is the following new result. There is an absolute positive constant $c$ such that if $n$ is sufficiently large and $1 \le q < cn$, then every $n$ vertex graph wi…
The Hurwitz space is a compactification of the space of rational functions of a given degree. We study the intersection of various strata of this space with its boundary. A study of the cohomology ring of the Hurwitz space then allows us to obtain recurrence relations for certain numbers of ramified coverings of a sphere by a sphere with prescribed ramifications. Generating functions for these numbers belong to a very particular subalgebra of the algebra of power series.
We introduce a class of posets, which includes both ribbon posets (skew shapes) and $d$-complete posets, such that their number of linear extensions is given by a determinant of a matrix whose entries are products of hook lengths. We also give $q$-analogues of this determinantal formula in terms of the major index and inversion statistics. As applications, we give families of tree posets whose numbers of linear extensions are given by generalizations of Euler numbers, we draw relations to Naruse-Okada's positive formulas for the number of linear extensions of skew $d$-complete posets, and we g…
The block number of a permutation is the maximal number of components in its expression as a direct sum. We show that, for $321$-avoiding permutations, the set of left-to-right maxima has the same distribution when the block number is assumed to be $k$ as when the last descent of the inverse is assumed to be at position $n - k$. This result is analogous to the Foata-Schützenberger equi-distribution theorem, and implies that the quasi-symmetric generating function of descent set over $321$-avoiding permutations with a prescribed number of blocks is Schur-positive.
In 1916, MacMahon showed that permutations in $S_n$ with a fixed descent set $I$ are enumerated by a polynomial $d_I(n)$. Diaz-Lopez, Harris, Insko, Omar, and Sagan recently revived interest in this descent polynomial, and suggested the direction of studying such enumerative questions for other consecutive patterns (descents being the consecutive pattern $21$). Zhu studied this question for the consecutive pattern $321$. We continue this line of work by studying the case of any consecutive pattern of the form $k,k-1,\ldots,1$, which we call a $k$-descent. In this paper, we reduce the problem o…
For various triple systems $F$, we give tight lower bounds on the number of copies of $F$ in a triple system with a prescribed number of vertices and edges. These are the first such results for hypergraphs, and extend earlier theorems of Bollobás, Frankl, Füredi, Keevash, Pikhurko, Simonovits, and Sudakov who proved that there is one copy of $F$. A sample result is the following: Füredi-Simonovits and independently Keevash-Sudakov settled an old conjecture of Sós by proving that the maximum number of triples in an $n$ vertex triple system (for $n$ sufficiently large and even) that contains no …

Motivated by the counting results for color-critical subgraphs by Mubayi [Adv. Math., 2010], we study the phenomenon behind Mubayi's theorem from a spectral perspective and start up this problem with the fundamental case of triangles. We prove tight bounds on the number of copies of triangles in a graph with a prescribed number of vertices and edges and spectral radius. Let $n$ and $m$ be the order and size of a graph. Our results extend those of Nosal, who proved there is one triangle if the spectral radius is more than $\sqrt{m}$, and of Rademacher, who proved there are at least $\lfloor\fra…
We represent the number of mxn non-negative integer matrices (contingency tables) with prescribed row sums and column sums as the expected value of the permanent of a non-negative random matrix with exponentially distributed entries. We bound the variance of the obtained estimator, from which it follows that if the row and column sums are bounded by a constant fixed in advance, we get a polynomial time approximation scheme for counting contingency tables. We show that the complete symmetric polynomial of a fixed degree in n variables can be epsilon-approximated coefficient-wise by a sum of pow…

We prove a "decomposition lemma" that allows us to count preimages of certain sets of permutations under West's stack-sorting map $s$. As a first application, we give a new proof of Zeilberger's formula for the number of 2-stack-sortable permutations in $S_n$. Our proof generalizes, allowing us to find an algebraic equation satisfied by the generating function that counts 2-stack-sortable permutations according to length, number of descents, and number of peaks. The same method yields a recurrence relation for $W_3(n)$, the number of 3-stack-sortable permutations in $S_n$. We compute $W_3(n)$ …
Let r_j(π,s) denote the number of cells, colored j, in the s-residue diagram of partition π. The GBG-rank of πmod s is defined as r_0+r_1*w_s+r_2*w_s^2+...+r_(s-1)*w_s^(s-1), where w_s=exp(2*Π*I/s). We will prove that for (s,t)=1, v(s,t) <= binomial(s+t,s)/(s+t), where v(s,t) denotes a number of distinct values that GBG-rank mod s of t-core may assume. The above inequality becomes an equality when s is prime or when s is composite and t<=2p_s, where p_s is a smallest prime divisor of s. We will show that the generating functions for 4-cores with the prescribed values of GBG-rank mod 3 are all …
We present an unexpected connection between two map enumeration problems. The first one consists in counting planar maps with a boundary of prescribed length. The second one consists in counting planar maps with two points at a prescribed distance. We show that, in the general class of maps with controlled face degrees, the solution for both problems is actually encoded into the same quantity, respectively via its power series expansion and its continued fraction expansion. We then use known techniques for tackling the first problem in order to solve the second. This novel viewpoint provides a…
Given a finite-dimensional vector space $V$ over the finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ and a subspace $W$ of $V$, we consider the problem of counting linear transformations $T:W\to V$ which have prescribed invariant factors. The case $W=V$ is a well-studied problem that is essentially equivalent to counting the number of square matrices over $\mathbb{F}_q$ in a conjugacy class and an explicit formula is known in this case. On the other hand, the case of general $W$ is also an interesting problem and there hasn't been substantive progress in this case for over two decades, barring a special case wher…
We explore various techniques for counting the number of straight-edge crossing-free graphs that can be embedded on a planar point set. In particular, we derive a lower bound on the ratio of the number of such graphs with $m+1$ edges to the number of graphs with $m$ edges. We show how a relatively small improvement of this bound would improve existing bounds concerning numbers of plane graphs with a prescribed number of edges. Furthermore, we use a cross-graph charging scheme to derive lower bounds for the number of such graphs when the point set has few extreme points.
We use the generating function approach to derive simple expressions for the factorial moments of the distance distribution over Reed-Solomon codes. We obtain better upper bounds for the error term of a counting formula given by Li and Wan, which gives nontrivial estimates on the number of polynomials over finite fields with prescribed leading coefficients and a given number of linear factors. This improvement leads to new results on the classification of deep holes of Reed Solomon codes.
