We enumerate derangements with descents in prescribed positions. A generating function was given by Guo-Niu Han and Guoce Xin in 2007. We give a combinatorial proof of this result, and derive several explicit formulas. To this end, we consider fixed point $λ$-coloured permutations, which are easily enumerated. Several formulae regarding these numbers are given, as well as a generalisation of Euler's difference tables. We also prove that except in a trivial special case, if a permutation $π$ is chosen uniformly among all permutations on $n$ elements, the events that $π$ has descents in a set $S$ of positions, and that $π$ is a derangement, are positively correlated.
We continue the work of Eriksen, Freij, and Wastlund [3], who study derangements that descend in blocks of prescribed lengths. We generalize their work to derangements that ascend in some blocks and descend in others. In particular, we obtain a generating function for the derangements that ascend in blocks of prescribed lengths, thus solving a problem posed in [3]. We also work towards a combinatorial interpretation of a polynomial sum appearing in [3]. As a result, we obtain a new combinatorial sum for counting derangements with ascending and descending blocks.
A classical result of Euler states that the tangent numbers are an alternating sum of Eulerian numbers. A dual result of Roselle states that the secant numbers can be obtained by a signed enumeration of derangements. We show that both identities can be refined with the following statistics: the number of crossings in permutations and derangements, and the number of patterns 31-2 in alternating permutations. Using previous results of Corteel, Rubey, Prellberg, and the author, we derive closed formulas for both q-tangent and q-secant numbers. There are two different methods to obtain these formu…
We initiate a general approach for the fast enumeration of permutations with a prescribed number of occurrences of `forbidden' patterns, that seems to indicate that the enumerating sequence is always P-recursive. We illustrate the method completely in terms of the patterns `abc',`cab' and `abcd'.
Successive ranks of a partition, which were introduced by Atkin, are the difference of the $i$th row and the $i$th column in the Ferrers graph. Recently, in the study of singular overpartitions, Andrews revisited successive ranks and parity blocks. Motivated by his work, we investigate partitions with prescribed successive rank parity blocks. The main result of this paper is the generating function of partitions with exactly $d$ successive ranks and $m$ parity blocks.
A polynomial is called self-reciprocal (or palindromic) if the sequence of its coefficients is palindromic. In this paper we enumerate self-reciprocal irreducible monic polynomials over a finite field with prescribed leading coefficients. Asymptotic expression with explicit error bound is derived, which is used to show that such polynomials with degree $2n$ always exist provided that the number of prescribed leading coefficients is slightly less than $n/4$. Exact expressions are also obtained for fields with two or three elements and up to two prescribed leading coefficients.
We consider the problem of enumerating the permutations containing exactly $k$ occurrences of a pattern of length 3. This enumeration has received a lot of interest recently, and there are a lot of known results. This paper presents an alternative approach to the problem, which yields a proof for a formula which so far only was conjectured (by Noonan and Zeilberger). This approach is based on bijections from permutations to certain lattice paths with ``jumps'', which were first considered by Krattenthaler.
We prove several general formulas for the distributions of various permutation statistics over any set of permutations whose quasisymmetric generating function is a symmetric function. Our formulas involve certain kinds of plethystic substitutions on quasisymmetric generating functions, and the permutation statistics we consider include the descent number, peak number, left peak number, and the number of up-down runs. We apply these results to cyclic permutations, involutions, and derangements, and more generally, to derive formulas for counting all permutations by the above statistics jointly…
We give a simple formula for the number of hypertrees with $k$ hyperedges of given sizes and $n+1$ labelled vertices with prescribed degrees. A slight generalization of this formula counts labelled bipartite trees with prescribed degrees in each class of vertices.
Let $F_q$ be a finite field of characteristic $p=2,3$. We give the number of irreducible polynomials $x^m+a_{m-1}x^{m-1}+...+a_0\in\F_q[x]$ with $a_{m-1}$ and $a_{m-3}$ prescribed for any given $m$ if $p=2$, and with $a_{m-1}$ and $a_1$ prescribed for $m=1,...,10$ if $p=2,3$.
We give a generating function for the number of graphs with given numerical properties and prescribed weighted number of connected components. As an application, we give a generating function for the number of bipartite graphs of given order, size and number of connected components.
Monotone triangles are plane integer arrays of triangular shape with certain monotonicity conditions along rows and diagonals. Their significance is mainly due to the fact that they correspond to $n \times n$ alternating sign matrices when prescribing $(1,2,...,n)$ as bottom row of the array. We define monotone $(d,m)$--trapezoids as monotone triangles with $m$ rows where the $d-1$ top rows are removed. (These objects are also equivalent to certain partial alternating sign matrices.) It is known that the number of monotone triangles with bottom row $(k_1,...,k_n)$ is given by a polynomial $α(n…
In this paper, we focus on the enumeration of permutations by number of cyclic occurrence of peaks and valleys. We find several recurrence relations involving the number of permutations with a prescribed number of cyclic peaks, cyclic valleys, fixed points and cycles. Several associated permutation statistics and the corresponding generating functions are also studied. In particular, we establish a connection between cyclic valleys and Pell numbers as well as cyclic peaks and alternating runs.
In recent work, Zeilberger and the author used a functional equations approach for enumerating permutations with r occurrences of the pattern 12...k. In particular, the approach yielded a polynomial-time enumeration algorithm for any fixed nonnegative r. We extend that approach to patterns of the form 12...(k-2)(k)(k-1) by deriving analogous functional equations and using them to develop similar algorithms that enumerate permutations with r occurrences of the pattern. We also generalize those techniques to handle patterns of the form 23...k1 and derive analogous functional equations and enumer…
We investigate permutations in terms of their cycle structure and descent set. To do this, we generalize the classical bijection of Gessel and Reutenauer to deal with permutations that have some ascending and some descending blocks. We then provide the first bijective proofs of some known results. We also solve some problems posed in [3] by Eriksen, Freij, and Wastlund, who study derangements that descend in blocks of prescribed lengths.
We deal with the asymptotic enumeration of combinatorial structures on planar maps. Prominent instances of such problems are the enumeration of spanning trees, bipartite perfect matchings, and ice models. The notion of orientations with out-degrees prescribed by a function $å:V\to \NN$ unifies many different combinatorial structures, including the afore mentioned. We call these orientations $å$-orientations. The main focus of this paper are bounds for the maximum number of $å$-orientations that a planar map with $n$ vertices can have, for different instances of $å$. We give examples of triangu…
A formula of Stembridge states that the permutation peak polynomials and descent polynomials are connected via a quadratique transformation. The aim of this paper is to establish the cycle analogue of Stembridge's formula by using cycle peaks and excedances of permutations. We prove a series of new general formulae expressing polynomials counting permutations by various excedance statistics in terms of refined Eulerian polynomials. Our formulae are comparable with Zhuang's generalizations [Adv. in Appl. Math. 90 (2017) 86-144] using descent statistics of permutations. Our methods include permu…
One of the most challenging problems in enumerative combinatorics is to count Wilf classes, where you are given a pattern, or set of patterns, and you are asked to find a "formula", or at least an efficient algorithm, that inputs a positive integer n and outputs the number of permutations avoiding that pattern. In 1996, John Noonan and Doron Zeilberger initiated the counting of permutations that have a prescribed, r, say, occurrences of a given pattern. They gave an ingenious method to generate Functional Equations, alas, with an unbounded number of "catalytic variables", but then described a …
