Permutations with Ascending and Descending Blocks

We investigate permutations in terms of their cycle structure and descent set. To do this, we generalize the classical bijection of Gessel and Reutenauer to deal with permutations that have some ascending and some descending blocks. We then provide the first bijective proofs of some known results. We also solve some problems posed in [3] by Eriksen, Freij, and Wastlund, who study derangements that descend in blocks of prescribed lengths.

Derangements with Ascending and Descending Blocks

We continue the work of Eriksen, Freij, and Wastlund [3], who study derangements that descend in blocks of prescribed lengths. We generalize their work to derangements that ascend in some blocks and descend in others. In particular, we obtain a generating function for the derangements that ascend in blocks of prescribed lengths, thus solving a problem posed in [3]. We also work towards a combinatorial interpretation of a polynomial sum appearing in [3]. As a result, we obtain a new combinatorial sum for counting derangements with ascending and descending blocks.

Fast algorithm for generating ascending compositions

In this paper we give a fast algorithm to generate all partitions of a positive integer $n$. Integer partitions may be encoded as either ascending or descending compositions for the purposes of systematic generation. It is known that the ascending composition generation algorithm is substantially more efficient than its descending composition counterpart. Using tree structures for storing the partitions of integers, we develop a new ascending composition generation algorithm which is substantially more efficient than the algorithms from the literature.

Ascending and descending regions of a discrete Morse function

We present an algorithm which produces a decomposition of a regular cellular complex with a discrete Morse function analogous to the Morse-Smale decomposition of a smooth manifold with respect to a smooth Morse function. We generalize the concept of ascending and descending runs from permutations to rooted labelled trees and mappings, i.e., functions from the set $\{1, \dots, n\}$ into itself. A direct bijection between descending plane partitions with no special parts and permutation matrices

We present a direct bijection between descending plane partitions with no special parts and permutation matrices. This bijection has the desirable property that the number of parts of the descending plane partition corresponds to the inversion number of the permutation. Additionally, the number of maximum parts in the descending plane partition corresponds to the position of the one in the last column of the permutation matrix. We also discuss the possible extension of this approach to finding a bijection between descending plane partitions and alternating sign matrices.

The fine structure of 321 avoiding permutations

Bivariate generating functions for various subsets of the class of permutations containing no descending sequence of length three or more are determined. The notion of absolute indecomposability of a permutation is introduced, and used in enumerating permutations which have a block structure avoiding 321 and whose blocks also have such structure (recursively). Some coefficient sequences related to the descent polynomial

The descent polynomial of a finite $I\subseteq \mathbb{Z}^+$ is the polynomial $d(I,n)$, for which the evaluation at $n>\max(I)$ is the number of permutations on $n$ elements, such that $I$ is the set of indices where the permutation is descending. In this paper we will prove some conjectures concerning coefficient sequences of $d(I,n)$. As a corollary we will describe some zero-free regions for the descent polynomial.
