The "canonical dimension" of an algebraic group over a field by definition is the maximum of the canonical dimensions of principal homogenous spaces under that group. Over a field of characteristic zero, we prove that the canonical dimension of the projective linear group PGL_6 is 3. We give two distinct proofs, both of which rely on the birational classification of rational surfaces over a nonclosed field. One of the proofs involves taking a novel look at del Pezzo surfaces of degree 6.
Canonical dimension of projective PGL_1(A)-homogeneous varieties
设A是域F上的中心除代数,其中ind A = n.
Let $\mathbb{C}$ be the field of complex numbers. Let $k$ be natural number with $k \geq 2$ and let $p$ be a rational prime. In this paper we count the number of conjugacy classes of admissible cyclic subgroups of $\mathrm{PGL}_{k+1}(\mathbb{C})$ of order $p$, where with admissible we intend those finite subgroups that can be contained in the automorphism group of a set of points in $\mathbb{P}^k(\mathbb{C})$ in general position and of cardinality $n\geq k+3$. We also describe a kind of association between the conjugacy classes of these groups and show a beautiful relation connecting this type…
A toroidal resolution for the bad reduction of some Shimura varieties
In \cite{K-rig}, a map $β:\mathcal R\to\mathcal{B}el$ from the set $\mathcal R$ of equivalence classes of rigid germs of finite morphisms branched in germs of curves having $ADE$ singularity types onto the set $\mathcal{B}el$ of rational Belyi pairs $f:\mathbb P^1\to\mathbb P^1$ considered up to the action of $PGL(2,\mathbb C)$ was defined. In this article, the inverse images of this map are investigated in terms of monodromies of Belyi pairs.
Let $G$ be a subgroup of the three dimensional projective group $\mathrm{PGL}(3,q)$ defined over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ of order $q$, viewed as a subgroup of $\mathrm{PGL}(3,K)$ where $K$ is an algebraic closure of $\mathbb{F}_q$. For the seven nonsporadic, maximal subgroups $G$ of $\mathrm{PGL}(3,q)$, we investigate the (projective, irreducible) plane curves defined over $K$ that are left invariant by $G$. For each, we compute the minimum degree $d(G)$ of $G$-invariant curves, provide a classification of all $G$-invariant curves of degree $d(G)$, and determine the first gap $\varepsilo…
Let $k$ be a field, $x_1, \dots, x_n$ be independent variables and $L_n = k(x_1, \dots, x_n)$. The symmetric group $Σ_n$ acts on $L_n$ by permuting the variables, and the projective linear group $\text{PGL}_2$ acts by \[ \begin{pmatrix} a & b \\ c & d \end{pmatrix} \colon x_i \mapsto \frac{a x_i + b}{c x_i + d} \] for each $i = 1, \ldots, n$. The fixed field $L_n^{\text{PGL}_2}$ is called "the field of cross-ratios". Given a subgroup $S \subset Σ_n$, H. Tsunogai asked whether $L_n^S$ rational over $K_n^S$. When $n \geqslant 5$ the second author has shown that $L_n^S$ is rational over $K_n^S$ i…
We study the Iitaka-Kodaira dimension of nef relative anti-canonical divisors. As a consequence, we prove that given a complex projective variety with klt singularities, if the anti-canonical divisor is nef, then the dimension of a general fibre of the maximal rationally connected fibration is at least the Iitaka-Kodaira dimension of the anti-canonical divisor.
Let $k$ be a field, $n \geqslant 5$ be an integer, $x_1, \dots, x_n$ be independent variables and $L_n = k(x_1, \dots, x_n)$. The symmetric group $S_n$ acts on $L_n$ by permuting the variables, and the projective linear group ${\rm PGL}_2$ acts by applying (the same) fractional linear transformation to each varaible. The fixed field $L_n^{{\rm PGL}_2}$ is called "the field of cross-ratios". Let $S \subset S_n$ be a subgroup. The Noether Problem asks whether the field extension $L_n^S/k$ is rational, and the Noether Problem for cross-ratios asks whether $K_n^S/k$ is rational. In an effort to re…
We propose two systems of "intrinsic" signs for counting such curves. In both cases the result acquires an exceptionally strong invariance property: it does not depend on the choice of a surface. One of our counts includes all divisor classes of canonical degree 2 and gives in total 30. The other one excludes the class $-2K$, but adds up the results of counting for a pair of real structures that differ by Bertini involution. This count gives 96.
Let $q$ be a prime power and $\mathbb{F}_q$ be the finite field with $q$ elements. In this article we investigate the space of unramified automorphic forms for $\mathrm{PGL}_n$ over the rational function field defined over $\mathbb{F}_q$ (i.e.\ for $\mathbb{P}^1$ defined over $\mathbb{F}_q$). In particular, we prove that the space of unramified cusp form is trivial and (for $n=3$) that the space of eigenforms is one dimensional. Moreover, we show that there are no nontrivial unramified toroidal forms for $\mathrm{PGL}_3$ over $\mathbb{P}^1$ and conjecture that the space of all toroidal automor…
In this paper, we prove that a pair of the minimal resolution of a del Pezzo surface with rational double points whose general anti-canonical member is smooth and its exceptional divisor lifts to the Witt ring. We also classify a del Pezzo surface with rational double points whose anti-canonical members are all singular. As a corollary, we determine all singularity types of del Pezzo surfaces with rational double points which only appear in positive characteristic.

Let $C$ be an integral and projective curve; and let $C'$ be its canonical model. We study the relation between the gonality of $C$ and the dimension of a rational normal scroll $S$ where $C'$ can lie on. We are mainly interested in the case where $C$ is singular, or even non-Gorenstein, in which case $C'\not\cong C$. We first analyze some properties of an inclusion $C'\subset S$ when it is induced by a pencil on $C$. Afterwards, in an opposite direction, we assume $C'$ lies on a certain scroll, and check some properties $C$ may satisfy, such as gonality and the kind of its singularities. At t…
The conjecture called algebraic Montgomery-Yang problem is still open for rational $\mathbb{Q}$-homology projective planes with cyclic quotient singularities having ample canonical divisor. All known such surfaces have a special birational behavior called a cascade. In this note, we establish algebraic Montgomery-Yang problem assuming the cascade conjecture, which claims that every rational $\mathbb{Q}$-homology projective planes with quotient singularities having ample canonical divisor admits a cascade.
In his work on birational classification of foliations on projective surfaces, Brunella showed that every regular foliation on a rational surface is algebraically integrable with rational leaves. This led Touzet to conjecture that every regular foliation on a rationally connected manifold is algebraically integrable with rationally connected leaves. Druel proved this conjecture for the case of weak Fano manifolds. In this paper, we extend this result showing that Touzet's conjecture is true for codimension one foliations on threefolds with nef anti-canonical bundle.
We prove an upper bound on the log canonical threshold of a hypersurface that satisfies a certain power condition and use it to prove several generalizations of Igusa's conjecture on exponential sums, with the log-canonical threshold in the exponent of the estimates. We show that this covers optimally all situations of the conjectures for non-rational singularities, by comparing the log canonical threshold with a local notion of the motivic oscillation index.
We show that if f is a nonzero, noninvertible function on a smooth complex variety X and J_f is the Jacobian ideal of f, then lct(f, J_f^2)>1 if and only if the hypersurface defined by f has rational singularities. Moreover, if this is not the case, then lct(f, J_f^2)=lct(f). We give two proofs, one relying on arc spaces and one that shows that the minimal exponent of f is at least as large as lct(f, J_f^2). In the case of a polynomial over the algebraic closure of Q, we also prove an analogue of this latter inequality, with the minimal exponent replaced by the motivic oscillation index moi(f)…
