We construct the canonical structure of an irreducible projective variety on the set of connected curves of degree $d$ in $\Bbb P^n$ with rational components (some components can be multiple). The set of rational curves is open subset in the Zariski topology under this structure.
Let $\Bbbk$ be any field of characteristic zero, $X$ be a del Pezzo surface of degree~$2$ and $G$ be a group acting on $X$. In this paper we study $\Bbbk$-rationality questions for the quotient surface $X / G$. If there are no smooth $\Bbbk$-points on $X / G$ then $X / G$ is obviously non-$\Bbbk$-rational. Assume that the set of smooth $\Bbbk$-points on the quotient is not empty. We find a list of groups, such that the quotient surface can be non-$\Bbbk$-rational. For these groups we construct examples of both $\Bbbk$-rational and non-$\Bbbk$-rational quotients of both $\Bbbk$-rational and non…
In this paper we study quotients of del Pezzo surfaces of degree four and more over arbitrary field $\Bbbk$ of characteristic zero by finite groups of automorphisms. We show that if a del Pezzo surface $X$ contains a point defined over the ground field and the degree of $X$ is at least five then the quotient is always $\Bbbk$-rational. If the degree of $X$ is equal to four then the quotient can be non-$\Bbbk$-rational only if the order of the group is $1$, $2$ or $4$. For these groups we construct examples of non-$\Bbbk$-rational quotients.
Let $X$ be a rational elliptic surface with elliptic fibration $π:X\to\Bbb{P}^1$ over an algebraically closed field $k$ of any characteristic. Given a conic bundle $φ:X\to\Bbb{P}^1$ we use numerical arguments to classify all possible fibers of $φ$ and study the interplay between singular fibers of $π$ and $φ$.
Let $ω$ be a relative differential on aithmetic surface $X$. We construct a family of rational functions $G_x$ on $X\otimes\Bbb{C}$, which can approximate local antiderivatives of $ω$ over an open set on $X\otimes\Bbb{C}$. From this family of functions, we construct a rational function $G_2$ on $X$. The function $G_2$ can generate an element in the ring of integers of a number field, which can approximate an inner product produced by $ω$ and the conjugate of $ω$ over an open set on $X\otimes\Bbb{C}$. This will give a relation between the height of a rational curve $E_P$ on $X$ and the canonica…
We construct new families of smooth Fano fourfolds with Picard rank $1$ which contain open $\Bbb A^1$-cylinders, that is, Zariski open subsets of the form $Z \times \Bbb A^1$, where $Z$ is a quasiprojective variety. In particular, we show that every Mukai fourfold of genus $8$ is cylindrical and there exists a family of cylindrical Gushel-Mukai fourfolds.
Let $X,Y$ be algebraic varieties defined over $\Bbb R$. Assume $Y$ is smooth and $X$ is Gorenstein. Suppose $φ:X\to Y$ is a flat $\Bbb R$-morphism such that all the fibers have rational singularities. We show that the pushforward of any smooth, compactly supported measure on $X$ has a continuous density with respect to any smooth measure with non-vanishing density on $Y$. This extends a result of Aizenbud and Avni from the $p$-adic case to the archimedean case.
In this paper we give different compactifications for the domain and the codomain of an affine rational map $f$ which parametrizes a hypersurface. We show that the closure of the image of this map (with possibly some other extra hypersurfaces) can be represented by a matrix of linear syzygies. We compactify $\Bbb {A}^{n-1}$ into an $(n-1)$-dimensional projective arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay subscheme of some $\Bbb {P}^N$. One particular interesting compactification of $\Bbb {A}^{n-1}$ is the toric variety associated to the Newton polytope of the polynomials defining $f$. We consider two diffe…
We study an interplay between operator algebras and geometry of rational elliptic curves. Namely, let $\mathcal{O}_B$ be the Cuntz-Krieger algebra given by square matrix $B=(b-1, ~1, ~b-2, ~1)$, where $b$ is an integer greater or equal to two. It is proved, that there exists a dense self-adjoint sub-algebra of $\mathcal{O}_B$, which is isomorphic (modulo an ideal) to a twisted homogeneous coordinate ring of the rational elliptic curve $\mathcal{E}({\Bbb Q})=\{(x,y,z) \in {\Bbb P}^2({\Bbb C}) ~|~ y^2z=x(x-z)(x-{b-2\over b+2}z)\}$.
For a smooth plane cubic $B$, we count curves $C$ of degree $d$ such that the normalizations of $C\backslash B$ are isomorphic to $\Bbb A^1$, for $d\leq7$ (for $d=7$ under some assumption). We also count plane rational quartic curves intersecting $B$ at only one point.
Let $X\subset\Bbb C^n$ be an affine variety and $f:X\to\Bbb C^m$ be the restriction to $X$ of a polynomial map $\Bbb C^n\to\Bbb C^m$. In this paper, we construct an affine Whitney stratification of $X$. The set $K(f)$ of stratified generalized critical values of $f$ can be also computed. We show that $K(f)$ is a nowhere dense subset of $\Bbb C^m$, which contains the set $B(f)$ of bifurcation values of $f$ by proving a version of the isotopy lemma for non-proper polynomial maps on singular varieties.
For an affine variety $S$ we consider the ring $AK(S),$ which is the intersection of the rings of constants of all locally-nilpotent derivations of the ring $\Cal {O}(S).$ We show that $AK(S\times\Bbb {C}^n)=AK(S)$ for a smooth affine surface $S$ with $H^2(S,\Bbb {Z})=\{0\}.$
A rational function on a real algebraic curve $C$ is called separating if it takes real values only at real points. Such a function defines a covering $\Bbb R C\to\Bbb{RP}^1$. Let $A_1,\dots,A_n$ be connected components of $C$. In a recent paper M. Kummer and K. Shaw defined the separating semigroup of $C$ as the set of all sequences $(d_1(f),\dots,d_n(f))$ where $f$ is a separating function and $d_i(f)$ is the degree of the restriction of $f$ to $A_i$. We describe the separating semigroup for hyperelliptic curves and for genus 3 curves.
We compute the degree of the variety parametrizing rational ruled surfaces of degree d in the projective space by relating the problem to Gromov-Witten invariants and Quantum cohomology.
We analyze the complexity of fitting a variety, coming from a class of varieties, to a configuration of points in $\Bbb C^n$. The complexity measure, called the algebraic complexity, computes the Euclidean Distance Degree (EDdegree) of a certain variety called the hypothesis variety as the number of points in the configuration increases. For the problem of fitting an $(n-1)$-sphere to a configuration of $m$ points in $\Bbb C^n$, we give a closed formula of the algebraic complexity of the hypothesis variety as $m$ grows for the case of $n=1$. For the case $n>1$ we conjecture a generalization of…
Given a relatively minimal fibration $f: S \to \Bbb P^1$ on a rational surface $S$ with general fiber $C$ of genus $g$, we investigate under what conditions the inequality $6(g-1)\le K_f^2$ occurs, where $K_f$ is the canonical relative sheaf of $f$. We give sufficient conditions for having such inequality, depending on the genus and gonality of $C$ and the number of certain exceptional curves on $S$. We illustrate how these results can be used for constructing fibrations with the desired property. For fibrations of genus $11\le g\le 49$ we prove the inequality: $$ 6(g-1) +4 -4\sqrt g \le K_f^2…
We prove that for every positive integer $d$, there are no nonzero regular differential $d$-forms on every smooth irreducible projective algebraic variety birationally isomorphic to the variety of flexes of plane cubics.
We prove the potential density of rational points on the variety of lines of a sufficiently general cubic fourfold defined over a number field, where ``sufficiently general'' means that a condition of Terasoma type is satisfied. These varieties have trivial canonical bundle and have geometric Picard group equal to $\mathbb{Z}$.
We represent algebraic curves via commuting matrix polynomials. This allows us to show that the Hilbert scheme of cohomologically stable twisted rational curves of degree $d$ in ${\Bbb P}^3\backslash {\Bbb P}^1$ is isomorphic to a complexified hyperkähler quotient of an open subset of a vector space by a non-reductive Lie group.
We describe the set of Mori structures for a Fano 3-fold of index 2 and degree 1 (the double cone over the Veronese surface). In partiular, it is proved that such a Fano variety is not rational, the group of birational automorphisms coincides with the group of biregular automorphisms, and there are no structures of conic bundle.
We investigate the universal Severi variety of rational curves on K3 surfaces, which parametrises irreducible rational curves in a fixed class on varying K3 surfaces of fixed genus. We investigate the conjecuted irreducibility of this space in the case of primitive classes using the deformation theory of stable maps and obtain partial results. In an appendix we give a short proof of the irreducibility of universal Severi varieties of high genus curves on K3 surfaces.
Let q be a power of a prime integer p, and let X be a Hermitian variety of degree q+1 in the n-dimensional projective space. We count the number of rational normal curves that are tangent to X at distinct q+1 points with intersection multiplicity n. This generalizes a result of B. Segre on the permutable pairs of a Hermitian curve and a smooth conic.
Following Contou-Carrere [CC], we consider the Bott-Samelson resolution of a Schubert variety as a variety of galleries in the Tits building associated to the situation. We prove that the rational smoothness of a Schubert variety can be expressed in terms of a subspace of the Zariski tangent space called, the combinatorial tangent space. For this, we use a characterization of rational smoothness of a Schubert variety introduced by Carrell and Peterson [CP].
In a previous paper, we provided some update in the treatment of the finiteness theorem for rational maps of finite degree from a fixed variety to varieties of general type. In the present paper we present another improvement, introducing the natural parametrization of maps by means of the space of linear projections in a suitable projective space, and this leads to some new insight in the geometry of the finiteness theorem.
In this paper, the technique of foliations in characteristic $p$ is used to investigate the difference between rational connectedness and separable rational connectedness in positive characteristic. The notion of being freely rationally connected is defined; a variety is freely rationally connected if a general pair of points can be connected by a free rational curve. It is proved that a freely rationally connected variety admits a finite purely inseparable morphism to a separably rationally connected variety. As an application, a generalized Graber-Harris-Starr type theorem in positive charac…
The dominant rational maps of finite degree from a fixed variety to varieties of general type, up to birational isomorphisms, form a finite set. This has been known as the Iitaka-Severi conjecture, and is nowdays an established result, in virtue of some recent advances in the theory of pluricanonical maps. We study the question of finding some effective estimate for the finite number of maps, and to this aim we provide some update and refinement of the classical treatment of the subject.
For a very general product $A$ of seven or more elliptic curves, every rational curve on the Kummer variety of $A$ projects trivially onto the Kummer variety of at least one of its factors. As a consequence, a very general member of certain families of abelian varieties parametrized by connected Shimura varieties of unitary type has the property that its Kummer variety has no rational curves.
A T-variety is an algebraic variety X with an effective regular action of an algebraic torus T. Altmann and Hausen gave a combinatorial description of an affine T-variety X by means of polyhedral divisors. In this paper we compute the higher direct images of the structure sheaf of a desingularization of X in terms of this combinatorial data. As a consequence, we give a criterion as to when a T-variety has rational singularities. We also provide a partial criterion for a T-variety to be Cohen-Macaulay. As an application we characterize in this terms quasihomogeneous elliptic singularities of su…
Let X be any generalized flag variety with Picard group of rank one. Given a degree d, consider the Gromov-Witten variety of rational curves of degree d in X that meet three general points. We prove that, if this Gromov-Witten variety is rationally connected for all large degrees d, then the structure constants of the small quantum K-theory ring of X vanish for large degrees.
We study a problem related to Kontsevich's homological mirror symmetry conjecture for the case of a generic curve $\cal Y$ with bi-degree (2,2) in a product of projective lines ${\Bbb P}^{1} \times {\Bbb P}^{1}$. We calculate two differenent monodromy representations of period integrals for the affine variety ${\cal X}^{(2,2)}$ obtained by the dual polyhedron mirror variety construction from $\cal Y$. The first method that gives a full representation of the fundamental group of the complement to singular loci relies on the generalised Picard-Lefschetz theorem. The second method uses the analyt…
Rational pairs generalize the notion of rational singularities to reduced pairs $(X,D)$. In this paper we deal with the problem of determining whether a normal variety $X$ has a rationalizing divisor, i.e. a reduced divisor $D$ such that $(X, D)$ is a rational pair. We give a criterion for cones to have a rationalizing divisor, and relate the existence of such a divisor to the locus of rational singularities of a variety.
We prove the following result which was conjectured by Stichtenoth and Xing: let $g$ be the genus of a projective, irreducible non-singular curve over the finite field $\Bbb F_{q^2}$ and whose number of $\Bbb F_{q^2}$-rational points attains the Hasse-Weil bound; then either $4g\le (q-1)^2$ or $2g=(q-1)q$.
A smooth variety is called uniformly rational if every point admits a Zariski open neighborhood isomorphic to a Zariski open subset of the affine space. In this note we show that every smooth and rational affine variety endowed with an algebraic torus action such that the algebraic quotient has dimension 0 or 1 is uniformly rational.
The space of smooth rational curves of degree $d$ in a projective variety $X$ has compactifications by taking closures in the Hilbert scheme, the moduli space of stable sheaves or the moduli space of stable maps respectively. In this paper we compare these compactifications by explicit blow-ups and -downs when $X$ is a projective homogeneous variety and $d\leq 3$. Using the comparison result, we calculate the Betti numbers of the compactifications when $X$ is a Grassmannian variety.
In this paper, we extend our result in [3] to hypersurfaces of any smooth projective variety $Y$. Precisely we let $X_0$ be a generic hypersurface of $Y$ and $c_0:\mathbf P^1\to X_0$ be a generic birational morphism to its image, i.e. $c_0\in Hom_{bir}(\mathbf P^1, X_0)$ is generic, such that (1) $dim(X_0)\geq 3$, (2) $H^1( N_{c_0/Y})=0$. Then \begin{equation} H^1(N_{c_0/X_0})=0. \end{equation} As an application we prove that the Clemens' conjecture holds for Calabi-Yau complete intersections of dimension 3.
A variety is unirational if it is dominated by a rational variety. A variety is rationally connected if two general points can be joined by a rational curve. This paper aims to show that the two notions can cooperate and, building on Graber-Harris-Starr celebrated result, it presents a unirationality statement for 3-fold conic bundles with "bounded" discriminant.
We consider the Quot scheme, R_{d}, compactifying the space of degree d maps from the projective line to the Grassmannian of lines. We give an algorithm for computing the degree of R_{d} under a "generalized Plücker embedding", this is a certain Gromov-Witten invariant. The approach is to apply the Atiyah-Bott localization formula for the natural C^{*}-action on R_{d}. These numbers can be obtained directly from Vafa-Intriligator formula.
Let $f: X \rightarrow A$ be an abelian cover from a complex algebraic variety with quotient singularities to an abelian variety. We show that $f^*$ induces an isomorphism between the rational cohomology rings $H^\bullet(A, \mathbb{Q})$ and $H^\bullet(X, \mathbb{Q})$ if and only if $f^*$ induces an isomorphism between the Chow rings with rational coefficients $\mathrm{CH}^\bullet(A)_{\mathbb{Q}}$ and $\mathrm{CH}^\bullet(X)_{\mathbb{Q}}$.
The object of this paper is to prove some general results about rational idempotents for a finite group $G$ and deduce from them geometric information about the components that appear in the decomposition of the Jacobian variety of a curve with $G-$action. We give an algorithm to find explicit primitive rational idempotents for any $G$, as well as for rational projectors invariant under any given subgroup. These explicit constructions allow geometric descriptions of the factors appearing in the decomposition of a Jacobian with group action: from them we deduce the decomposition of any Prym or …
We study homotopy rational points of Brauer-Severi varieties over fields of characteristic zero. We are particularly interested if a Brauer-Severi variety admitting a homotopy rational point splits. The analogue statement turns out to be true for open subvarieties of twisted hyperplane arrangements. In the complete case, the obstruction turns out to be the pullback of the Chern class of a generator of the Picard group along the homotopy rational point. Moreover, we will show that every Brauer-Severi variety over a $p$-adic field with $p$-primary period admits a homotopy rational point.
Given an n-dimensional variety Z with rational singularities, we conjecture that for a resolution of singularities whose reduced exceptional divisor E has simple normal crossings, the (n-1)-th higher direct image of the sheaf of differential forms with log poles along E vanishes. We prove this when Z has isolated singularities and when it is a toric variety. We deduce that for a divisor D with isolated rational singularities on a smooth complex n-dimensional variety X, the generation level of Saito's Hodge filtration on the localization of the structure sheaf along D is at most n-3.
We introduce equivariant versions of uniform rationality: given an algebraic group G, a G-variety is called G-uniformly rational (resp. G-linearly uniformly rational) if every point has a G-invariant open neighborhood equivariantly isomorphic to a G-invariant open subset of the affine space endowed with a G-action (resp. linear G-action). We establish a criterion for Gm-uniform rationality of affine variety equipped with hyperbolic Gm-action with a unique fixed point, formulated in term of their Altmann-Hausen presentation. We prove the Gm-uniform rationality of Koras-Russel threefolds of the …
In this paper we look for necessary and sufficient conditions for a genus one fibration to have rational curves. We show that a projective variety with log terminal singularities that admits a relatively minimal genus one fibration $X\rightarrow B$ does contain vertical rational curves if and only if it not isomorphic to a finite étale quotient of a product $\tilde{B}\times E$ over $B$. Many sufficient conditions for the existence of rational curves in a variety that admits a genus one fibration are proved in this paper.
The motivic Hilbert zeta function of a variety is the generating function for classes in the Grothendieck ring of varieties of Hilbert schemes of points of the variety. In this paper, the motivic Hilbert zeta function of a reduced curve is shown to be rational.
We consider complex projective schemes $X\subset\Bbb{P}^{r}$ defined by quadratic equations and satisfying a technical hypothesis on the fibres of the rational map associated to the linear system of quadrics defining $X$. Our assumption is related to the syzygies of the defining equations and, in particular, it is weaker than properties $N_2$, $N_{2,2}$ and $K_2$. In this setting, we show that the degree, $d$, of $X\subset\Bbb{P}^{r}$ is bounded by a function of its codimension, $c$, whose asymptotic behaviour is given by ${2^c}/{\sqrt[4]{πc}}$, thus improving the obvious bound $d\leq 2^c$. Mo…
In this paper, we study the Rouquier dimension of the singularity category of a variety with rational singularity. We construct an upper bound for the dimension of $\mathrm{D}_{\mathrm{sg}}(X)$ if $X$ has at worst rational singularities and $\dim X_{\mathrm{sing}} \leq 1$.
Let X be a variety over a number field and let f: X --> X be an "interesting" rational self-map with a fixed point q. We make some general remarks concerning the possibility of using the behaviour of f near q to produce many rational points on X. As an application, we give a simplified proof of the potential density of rational points on the variety of lines of a cubic fourfold (originally obtained by Claire Voisin and the first author in 2007).
The space of holomorphic maps from $S^2$ to a complex algebraic variety $X$, i.e. the space of parametrized rational curves on $X$, arises in several areas of geometry. It is a well known problem to determine an integer $n(D)$ such that the inclusion of this space in the corresponding space of continuous maps induces isomorphisms of homotopy groups up to dimension $n(D)$, where $D$ denotes the homotopy class of the maps. The solution to this problem is known for an important but special class of varieties, the generalized flag manifolds: such an integer may be computed, and $n(D)\to\infty$ as …
Let $X$ be a proper variety over a henselian discretely valued field. An important obstruction to the existence of a rational point on $X$ is the index, the minimal positive degree of a zero cycle on $X$. This paper introduces a new invariant, the specialization index, which is a closer approximation of the existence of a rational point. We provide an explicit formula for the specialization index in terms of an $snc$-model, and we give examples of curves where the index equals one but the specialization index is different from one, and thus explains the absence of a rational point. Our main re…
In this paper, we study rational sections of the relative Picard variety of a linear system on a smooth projective variety. Specifically, we prove that if the linear system is basepoint-free and the locus of non-integral divisors has codimension at least two, then all rational sections of the relative Picard variety come from restrictions of line bundles on the variety.
For a smooth projective geometrically uniruled threefold defined over a perfect field we show that there exists a canonical abelian variety over the field, namely the second algebraic representative, whose rational Tate modules model canonically the third l-adic cohomology groups of the variety for all primes l. In addition, there exists a rational correspondence inducing these identifications. In the case of a geometrically rationally chain connected variety, one obtains canonical identifications between the integral Tate modules of the second algebraic representative and the third l-adic coh…
We consider the locus of irreducible nonsingular rational curves of degree d Pn, n>2, meeting a generic collection of linear subspaces. When this locus is 0 (resp 1)- dimensional, we compute (recursively) its degree (resp. geometric genus). The method is completely elementary and similar to that of (alg-geom/9704004, alg-geom/9708013), where the case n=2 was considered.
