In this paper, we classify all the K3 surfaces covering a Kummer surface. Our classification is expressed in terms of period lattices and extends Morrison's criterion of K3 surfaces with a Shioda-Inose structure. Moreover, we list all the K3 surfaces covering a general Kummer surface and provide very geometrical examples of such a phenomenon.
The aim of this paper is to show that using some natural curve arrangements in algebraic surfaces and Hirzebruch-Kummer covers one cannot construct new examples of ball-quotients, i.e., minimal smooth complex projective surfaces of general type satisfying equality in the Bogomolov-Miyaoka-Yau inequality.
This paper classifies Enriques surfaces whose K3-cover is a fixed Picard-general Jacobian Kummer surface. There are exactly 31 such surfaces. We describe the free involutions which give these Enriques surfaces explicitly. As a biproduct, we show that Aut(X) is generated by elements of order 2, which is an improvement of the theorem of S. Kondo.
We prove the equisingular rigidity of the singular Hirzebruch-Kummer coverings $X(n, \mathcal{L})$ of the projective plane branched on line configurations $\mathcal{L}$, satisfying some technical condition. In the case, $\mathcal{L}$ = the complete quadrangle, we give explicit equations of the Hirzebruch-Kummer covering $S_n$ (=the minimal desingularisation of $X(n, \mathcal{L})$) in a product of four Fermat curves of degree n. Since $S_n$ is the $(\mathbb{Z}/n)^5$ covering of the Del Pezzo surface $Y_5$ of degree 5 branched on the 10 lines, these equations are derived from explicit equations …
In this work we describe a method to reconstruct the braid monodromy of the preimage of a curve by a Kummer cover. This method is interesting, since it combines two techniques, namely, the reconstruction of a highly non-generic braid monodromy with a systematic method to go from a non-generic to a generic braid monodromy. This "generification" method is independent from Kummer covers and can be applied in more general circumstances since non generic braid monodromies appear more naturally and are oftentimes much easier to compute. Explicit examples are computed using these techniques.
The aim of this paper is to describe the geometry of the generic Kummer surface associated to a $(1,2)$-polarized abelian surface. We show that it is the double cover of a weak del Pezzo surface and that it inherits from the del Pezzo surface an elliptic fibration with twelve singular fibers of type $I_2.$
We study Kummer varieties attached to 2-coverings of abelian varieties of arbitrary dimension. Over a number field we show that the subgroup of odd order elements of the Brauer group does not obstruct the Hasse principle. Sufficient conditions for the triviality of the Brauer group are given, which allow us to give an example of a Kummer K3 surface of geometric Picard rank 17 over the rationals with trivial Brauer group. We establish the non-emptyness of the Brauer--Manin set of everywhere locally soluble Kummer varieties attached to 2-coverings of products of hyperelliptic Jacobians with larg…
We discuss several geometric features of a Kummer surface associated with a (1,2)-polarized abelian surface defined over the field of complex numbers. In particular, we show that any such Kummer surface can be modeled as the double cover of the projective plane branched along six lines, three of which meet a common point. The proof uses certain explicit pencils of plane quartic bielliptic genus-three curves whose associated Prym varieties are naturally (1,2)-polarized abelian surfaces.
We consider the problem of counting the number of rational points on the family of Kummer surfaces associated with two non-isogenous elliptic curves. For this two-parameter family we prove Manin's unity, using the presentation of the Kummer surfaces as isotrivial elliptic fibration and as double cover of the modular elliptic surface of level two. By carrying out the rational point-count with respect to either of the two elliptic fibrations explicitly, we obtain an interesting new identity between two-parameter counting functions.
This paper develops families of complex Enriques surfaces whose Brauer groups pull back identically to zero on the covering K3 surfaces. Our methods rely on isogenies with Kummer surfaces of product type. We offer both lattice theoretic and geometric constructions. We also sketch how the construction connects to string theory and Picard-Fuchs equations in the context of Enriques Calabi-Yau threefolds.
The aim of this paper is to give an explicit extension of the classical elliptic integrals to the Hilbert modular case for $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{5})$. We study a family of Kummer surfaces corresponding to the Humbert surface of invariant $5$ with two complex parameters. Our Kummer surface is given by a double covering of the weighted projective space $\mathbb{P}(1:1:2)$ branched along a parabola and a quintic curve. The period mapping for our family is given by double integrals of an algebraic function on chambers coming from an arrangement of a parabola and a quintic curve in $\mathbb{C}^2$.
A generalized Kummer surface $X$ obtained as the quotient of an abelian surface by a symplectic automorphism of order 3 contains a $9\mathbf{A}_{2}$-configuration of $(-2)$-curves. Such a configuration plays the role of the $16\mathbf{A}_{1}$-configurations for usual Kummer surfaces. In this paper we construct $9$ other such $9\mathbf{A}_{2}$-configurations on the generalized Kummer surface associated to the double cover of the plane branched over the sextic dual curve of a cubic curve. The new $9\mathbf{A}_{2}$-configurations are obtained by taking the pullback of a certain configuration of $…
In the context of K3 mirror symmetry, the Greene-Plesser orbifolding method constructs a family of K3 surfaces, the mirror of quartic hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{P}^3$, starting from a special one-parameter family of K3 varieties known as the quartic Dwork pencil. We show that certain K3 double covers obtained from the three-parameter family of quartic Kummer surfaces associated with a principally polarized abelian surface generalize the relation of the Dwork pencil and the quartic mirror family. Moreover, for the three-parameter family we compute a formula for the rational point-count of its ge…
In the present paper we propose a combinatorial approach to study the so called double octic Clabi--Yau threefolds. We use this description to give a complete classification of double octics with $h^{1,2}\le1$ and to derive their geometric properties (Kummer surface fibrations, automorphisms, special elements in families).
We show that a Hilbert scheme of conics on a Fano fourfold double cover of $\mathbb{P}^2\times\mathbb{P}^2$ ramified along a divisor of bidegree $(2,2)$ admits a $\mathbb{P}^1$-fibration with base being a hyper-Kähler fourfold. We investigate the geometry of such fourfolds relating them with degenerated EPW cubes, with elements in the Brauer groups of $K3$ surfaces of degree $2$, and with Verra threefolds studied in [Ver04]. These hyper-Kähler fourfolds admit natural involutions and complete the classification of geometric realizations of anti-symplectic involutions on hyper-Kähler $4$-folds o…
A Nikulin configuration is the data of $16$ disjoint smooth rational curves on a K3 surface. According to a well known result of Nikulin, if a K3 surface contains a Nikulin configuration $\mathcal{C}$, then $X$ is a Kummer surface $X=Km(B)$ where $B$ is an Abelian surface determined by $\mathcal{C}$. Let $B$ be a generic Abelian surface having a polarization $M$ with $M^{2}=k(k+1)$ (for $k>0$ an integer) and let $X=Km(B)$ be the associated Kummer surface. To the natural Nikulin configuration $\mathcal{C}$ on $X=Km(B)$, we associate another Nikulin configuration $\mathcal{C}'$; we denote by $B'…
The main focus of this paper is on models of quartic surfaces, especially so-called complex surfaces. These are special fourth-degree surfaces that Julius Plücker introduced in the 1860s for visualizing the local structure of a quadratic line complex. Plücker's complex surfaces turned out to be closely related to Kummer surfaces and both of these types of quartics are examples of caustic surfaces, which arise in geometrical optics. Indeed, Kummer surfaces represent a natural generalization of the wave surface, first introduced by Augustin Fresnel to explain double refraction in biaxial crystal…
We construct smooth minimal complex surfaces of general type with $K^2=7$ and: $p_g=q=2,$ Albanese map of degree $2$ onto a $(1,2)$-polarized abelian surface; $p_g=q=1$ as a double cover of a quartic Kummer surface; $p_g=q=0$ as a double cover of a numerical Campedelli surface with $5$ nodes.
We prove that the canonical cover of an Enriques surface does not admit non-trivial Fourier-Mukai partners. We also show that the canonical cover of a bielliptic surface has at most one non-isomorphic Fourier-Mukai partner. The first result is then applied to birational Hilbert schemes of points and the second to birational generalised Kummer varieties. An appendix establishes that there are no exceptional or spherical objects in the derived category of a bielliptic surface.
We study nodal quintic surfaces with an even set of 16 nodes as analogues of singular Kummer surfaces. The interpretation of the natural double cover of an even 16-nodal quintic as a certain Fano variety of lines could be viewed as a replacement for the additive structure of the cover of a singular Kummer surface by its associated abelian surface. Most of the results in this article can be seen as refinements of known facts and our arguments rely heavily on techniques developed by Beauville, Murre, and Voisin. Results due to Izadi and Shen are particularly close to some of the statements. In t…
We construct two pencils of bielliptic curves of genus three and genus five. The first pencil is associated with a general abelian surface with a polarization of type $(1,2)$. The second pencil is related to the first by an unramified double cover, the Prym variety of which is canonically isomorphic to the Jacobian of a very general curve of genus two. Our results are obtained by analyzing suitable elliptic fibrations on the associated Kummer surfaces and rational double covers among them.
By a K3-surface with nine cusps I mean a surface with nine isolated double points A_2, but otherwise smooth, such that its minimal desingularisation is a K3-surface. It is shown, that such a surface admits a cyclic triple cover branched precisely over the cusps. This parallels the theorem of Nikulin, that a K3-surface with 16 nodes is a Kummer quotient of a complex torus.
In this paper we discuss four methods of proving modularity of Calabi--Yau threefolds with $h^{12}=1$: existence of elliptic ruled surfaces inside (Hulek-Verrill), correspondence with a product of an elliptic curve and a K3 surface (Livné-Yui), correspondence with a (modular) rigid Calabi-Yau threefold, and existence of an involution splitting the fourdimensional representation into twodimensional subrepresentations. We apply these methods to prove modularity of 17 out of 18 double octic Calabi-Yau threefolds for which "numerical evidence of modularity" was found in the second Author's thesis.…
This paper computes the Galois group of the Galois cover of the composition of an étale double cover of a cyclic $p$-gonal cover for any prime $p$. Moreover a relation between some of its Prym varieties and the Jacobian of a subcover is given. In a sense this generalizes the trigonal construction.
The Prym variety for a branched double covering of a nonsingular projective curve is defined as a polarized abelian variety. We prove that any double covering of an elliptic curve which has more than $4$ branch points is recovered from its Prym variety.
We show that three numerical semigroups <5,6,7,8>, <3,7,8 > and <3,5> are of double covering type, i.e., the Weierstrass semigroups of ramification points on double covers of curves. Combining this with the results of Oliveira-Pimentel and Komeda we can determine the Weierstrass semigroups of the ramification points on double covers of genus two curves.
We prove the relation between the Hodge structure of the double cover of a nonsingular cubic surface branched along its Hessian and the Hodge structure of the triple cover of the ambient projective space branched along the cubic surface. And we introduce a method to study the infinitesimal variations of Hodge structure of the double cover of the cubic surface. Using these results, we compute the Néron-Severi lattices for the double cover of a generic cubic surface and the Fermat cubic surface.
Let C be a complete non-singular irreducible curve of genus 4 over an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0. We determine all possible Weierstrass semigroups of ramification points on double covers of C which have genus greater than 11. Moreover, we construct double covers with ramification points whose Weierstrass semigroups are the possible ones.
We prove the generic injectivity of the Prym map, sending a double covering of an elliptic curve ramified at r>4 points to its polarized Prym variety. For r=6 the map is birational.
We prove that a double cover of $\mathbb{P}^2$ ramified along a general smooth curve B of degree $2s$, for $s \geq 3$, supports a rank 2 special Ulrich bundle.
Following an idea of Ciliberto we show that double covers of projective r-space branched over an hypersurface of degree 2d are unirational provided r is sufficiently big with respect to d.
We study a class of Calabi-Yau varieties that can be represented as a non-singular model of a double covering of $\mathbb P^3$ branched along certain octic surfaces. We compute Euler numbers of all constructed examples and describe their resolution of singularities.
We explain a general construction of double covers of quadratic degeneracy loci and Lagrangian intersection loci based on reflexive sheaves. We relate the double covers of quadratic degeneracy loci to the Stein factorizations of the relative Hilbert schemes of linear spaces of the corresponding quadric fibrations. We give a criterion for these double covers to be nonsingular. As applications of these results, we show that the double covers of the EPW sextics obtained by our construction give O'Grady's double EPW sextics and that an analogous construction gives Iliev-Kapustka-Kapustka-Ranestad'…
We show that the coarse moduli space $\cR_5$ of étale double covers of curves of genus~5 over the complex numbers is unirational. We give two slightly different arguments, one purely geometric and the other more computational.
This note is a report on the observation that the Enriques-Fano threefolds with terminal cyclic quotient singularities admit Calabi-Yau threefolds as their double coverings. We calculate the invariants of those Calabi-Yau threefolds when the Picard number is one. It turns out that all of them are new examples.
Let X be a smooth curve of genus g. When pi>=3g and d>=pi-2g+1 we show the existence of a double covering gamma:C-->X where C a smooth curve of genus pi with a base-point-free pencil of degree d which is not the pull-back of a pencil on X.
We give a formula for the cohomological invariants of a root stack, which we apply to compute the cohomological invariants and the Brauer group of the stack of admissible double coverings.
In this paper we classify the topological invariants of the possible branch loci of a smooth double cover $f:X\rightarrow Y$ of a K3 surface $Y$. We describe some geometric properties of $X$ which depend on the properties of the branch locus. We give explicit examples of surfaces $X$ with Kodaira dimension 1 and 2 obtained as double cover of K3 surfaces and we describe some of them as bidouble cover of rational surfaces. Then, we classify the K3 surfaces which admit smooth double covers $X$ satisfying certain conditions; under these conditions the surface $X$ is of general type, $h^{1,0}(X)=0$…
The goal of this paper is to give a method to compute the space of infinitesimal deformations of a double cover of a smooth algebraic variety. The space of all infinitesimal deformations has a representation as a direct sum of two subspaces. One is isomorphic to the space of simultaneous deformations of the branch locus and the base of the double covering. The second summand is the subspace of deformations of the double covering which induce trivial deformations of the branch divisor. The main result of the paper is a description of the effect of imposing singularities in the branch locus. As …
A collection $S = \{D_1,\ldots, D_n\}$ of divisors in a smooth variety $X$ is an {\em arrangement} if intersections of all subsets of $S$ are smooth. We show that a double cover of $X$ ramified on an arrangement has a crepant resolution under additional hypotheses. Namely, we assume that all intersection components that change the canonical divisor when blown up satisfy are {\em splayed}, a property of the tangent spaces of the components first studied by Faber. This strengthens a result of Cynk and Hulek, which requires a stronger hypothesis on the intersection components. Further, we study t…
In this note, we will do analysis of accessible singular points for a polynomial Hamiltonian system obtained by taking a double covering of the Painlevé I equation. We will show that this system passes the Painlevé $α$-test for all accessible singular points $P_i \ (i=1,2,3)$. We note its holomorphy condition of the first Painlevé system.
We construct a deformation family for each of the 34 Hilbert series of index 2 Fano 3-folds. In 18 cases we construct two different families, distinguished by the topology of their general members.
We investigate the nef cone spanned by the diagonal and the fibre classes of second symmetric product of a curve of genus $g$. This 2-dimensional nef cone gives a characterization of double covers of curves of genus $\le \frac{g-1}{8}$. This is a generalization of a result by Debarre.
