In [HT], two of us constructed a closed oriented 4-dimensional manifold with fundamental group $\Z$ that does not split off $S^1\times S^3$. In this note we show that this 4-manifold, and various others derived from it, do not admit smooth structures. Moreover, we find an infinite family of 4-manifolds with exactly the same properties (and same intersection form on $H_2$). As a corollary, we obtain topologically slice knots that are not smoothly slice in any rational homology ball.
Under certain homological hypotheses on a compact 4-manifold, we prove exactness of the topological surgery sequence at the stably smoothable normal invariants. The main examples are the class of finite connected sums of 4-manifolds with certain product geometries. Most of these compact manifolds have non-vanishing second mod 2 homology and have fundamental groups of exponential growth, which are not known to be tractable by Freedman-Quinn topological surgery. Necessarily, the *-construction of certain non-smoothable homotopy equivalences requires surgery on topologically embedded 2-spheres an…
We show a rigidity theorem for the Seiberg-Witten invariants mod 2 for families of spin 4-manifolds. A mechanism of this rigidity theorem also gives a family version of 10/8-type inequality. As an application, we prove the existence of non-smoothable topological families of 4-manifolds whose fiber, base space, and total space are smoothable as manifolds. These non-smoothable topological families provide new examples of 4-manifolds $M$ for which the inclusion maps $\operatorname{Diff}(M) \hookrightarrow \operatorname{Homeo}(M)$ are not weak homotopy equivalences. We shall also give a new series…
We say that a topological $n$-manifold $N$ is a cubical $n$-manifold if it is contained in the $n$-skeleton of the canonical cubulation $\mathcal{C}$ of ${\mathbb{R}}^{n+k}$ ($k\geq1$). In this paper, we prove that any closed, oriented cubical $2$-manifold has a transverse field of 2-planes in the sense of Whitehead and therefore it is smoothable by a small ambient isotopy.
We show that the hyperbolization of polyhedra pulls back regular neighborhoods of PL submanifolds. Applying this to the Riemannian version of the hyperbolization due to Ontaneda gives open complete manifolds of pinched negative curvature that are homotopy equivalent to closed smooth manifolds but contain no smooth spines. We also find open complete negatively pinched manifolds that are homotopy equivalent to closed non-smoothable manifolds.
We discuss two families of closed orientable three-dimensional manifolds which arise as cyclic generalizations of two hyperbolic icosahedral manifolds listed by Everitt. Everitt's manifolds are cyclic coverings of the lens space $L_{3,1}$ branched over some 2-component links. We present results on covering properties, fundamental groups, and hyperbolic volumes of the manifolds belonging to these families.
We classify $SU(2)$-cyclic and $SU(2)$-abelian 3-manifolds, for which every representation of the fundamental group into $SU(2)$ has cyclic or abelian image respectively, among geometric 3-manifolds which are not hyperbolic. As an application, we give examples of hyperbolic 3-manifolds which do not admit degree-1 maps to any Seifert fibered manifold other than $S^3$ or a lens space. We also produce infinitely many one-cusped hyperbolic manifolds with at least four $SU(2)$-cyclic Dehn fillings, one more than the number of cyclic fillings allowed by the cyclic surgery theorem.
We show that the infinite cyclic cover of the exterior of the untwisted Whitehead double of a non-trivial knot does not embed in any compact 3-manifold, answering a question of Jiang, Ni, Wang and Zhou.
Let $M^{2n}$ denote a closed $(n-1)$-connected smoothable topological $2n$-manifold. We show that the group $\mathcal{C}(M^{2n})$ of concordance classes of smoothings of $M^{2n}$ is isomorphic to the group of smooth homotopy spheres $\overlineΘ_{2n}$ for $n=4$ or $5$, the concordance inertia group $I_c(M^{2n})=0$ for $n=3$, $4$, $5$ or $11$ and the homotopy inertia group $I_h(M^{2n})=0$ for $n=4$. On the way, following Wall's approach \cite{Wal67} we present a new proof of the main result in \cite{KS07}, namely, for $n=4$, $8$ and $H^{n}(M^{2n};\mathbb{Z})\cong \mathbb{Z}$, the inertia group $…
A fundamental theorem in the study of Dunwoody manifolds is a classification of finite graphs on $2n$ vertices that satisfy seven conditions (concerning planarity, regularity, and a cyclic automorphism of order $n$). Its significance is that if the presentation complex of a cyclic presentation is a spine of a 3-manifold then its Whitehead graph satisfies the first five conditions (the remaining conditions do not necessarily hold). In this paper we observe that this classification relies implicitly on an unstated, and unnecessary, 8th condition and that this condition is not necessary for such …
We give some remarks on two closely related issues as stated in the title. In particular we show that a Montesinos knot is SU(2)-simple if and only if it is a 2-bridge knot, extending a result of Zentner for 3-tangle summand pretzel knots. We conjecture with some evidence that an SU(2)-cyclic rational homology 3-sphere is an L-space.
We show that every strongly-cyclic branched covering of a (1,1)-knot is a Dunwoody manifold. This result, together with the converse statement previously obtained by Grasselli and Mulazzani, proves that the class of Dunwoody manifolds coincides with the class of strongly-cyclic branched coverings of (1,1)-knots. As a consequence, we obtain a parametrization of (1,1)-knots by 4-tuples of integers. Moreover, using a representation of (1,1)-knots by the mapping class group of the twice punctured torus, we provide an algorithm which gives the parametrization of all torus knots.
In this paper we study smooth orientation-preserving free actions of the cyclic group $\mathbb Z/m$ on a class of $(n-1)$-connected $2n$-manifolds, $\sharp g (S^n \times S^n)\sharp Σ$, where $Σ$ is a homotopy $2n$-sphere. When $n=2$ we obtain a classification up to topological conjugation. When $n=3$ we obtain a classification up to smooth conjugation. When $n \ge 4$ we obtain a classification up to smooth conjugation when the prime factors of $m$ are larger than a constant $C(n)$.
We are interested in finite groups acting orientation-preservingly on 3-manifolds (arbitrary actions, ie not necessarily free actions). In particular we consider finite groups which contain an involution with nonempty connected fixed point set. This condition is satisfied by the isometry group of any hyperbolic cyclic branched covering of a strongly invertible knot as well as by the isometry group of any hyperbolic 2-fold branched covering of a knot in the 3-sphere. In the paper we give a characterization of nonsolvable groups of this type. Then we consider some possible applications to the st…
Two criteria for a closed connected definite 4-manifold with infinite cyclic fundamental group to be TOP-split are given. One criterion extends a sufficient condition made in a previous paper. The result is equivalent to a purely algebraic result on the question asking when a positive definite Hermitian form over the ring of integral one-variable Laurent polynomials is represented by an integer matrix. As an application, an infinite family of orthogonally indecomposable unimodular odd definite symmetric $Z$-forms is produced.
Given a 3-manifold M with no spherical boundary components, and a primitive class ϕin H^1(M;Z), we show that the following are equivalent: (1) ϕis a fibered class, (2) the rank gradient of (M,ϕ) is zero, (3) the Heegaard gradient of (M,ϕ) is zero.
In this paper we show that all 3-manifolds of a family introduced by M. J. Dunwoody are cyclic coverings of lens spaces (eventually $\bf S^3$), branched over genus one 1-bridge knots. As a consequence, we give a positive answer to the Dunwoody conjecture that all the elements of a wide subclass are cyclic coverings of $\bf S^3$ branched over a knot. Moreover, we show that all branched cyclic coverings of a 2-bridge knot belong to this subclass; this implies that the fundamental group of each branched cyclic covering of a 2-bridge knot admits a geometric cyclic presentation.
In this paper we show that periodic Takahashi 3-manifolds are cyclic coverings of the connected sum of two lens spaces (possibly cyclic coverings of the 3-sphere), branched over knots. When the base space is a 3-sphere, we prove that the associated branching set is a two-bridge knot of genus one, and we determine its type. Moreover, a geometric cyclic presentation for the fundamental groups of these manifolds is obtained in several interesting cases, including the ones corresponding to the branched cyclic coverings of the 3-sphere.
The (4k+2)-dimensional Kervaire manifold is a closed, piecewise linear (PL) manifold with Kervaire invariant 1 and the same homology as the product of two (2k+1)-dimensional spheres. We show that a finite group of odd order acts freely on a Kervaire manifold if and only if it acts freely on the corresponding product of spheres. If the Kervaire manifold M is smoothable, then each smooth structure on M admits a free smooth involution. If k + 1 is not a 2-power, then the Kervaire manifold in dimension 4k+2 does not admit any free TOP involutions. Free "exotic" (PL) involutions are constructed on …
We give a complete proof of Thurston's Orbifold Theorem for very good 3-orbifolds of cyclic type. An orbifold is said to be very good when it has a finite cover which is a manifold. A 3-orbifold is of cyclic type if the singular set is a non-empty 1-manifold transverse to the boundary.
We give a necessary and suffcient condition for almost-flat manifolds with cyclic holonomy to admit a Spin structure. Using this condition we find all 4-dimensional orientable almost- flat manifolds with cyclic holonomy that do not admit a Spin structure.
The ambient framed bordism class of the connecting manifold of two consecutive critical points of a Morse-Smale function is estimated by means of a certain Hopf invariant. Applications include new examples of non-smoothable Poincare duality spaces as well as an extension of the Morse complex.
We show that if the lower central series of the fundamental group of a closed oriented $3$-manifold stabilizes then the maximal nilpotent quotient is a cyclic group, a quaternion $2$-group cross an odd order cyclic group, or a Heisenberg group. These groups are well known to be precisely the nilpotent fundamental groups of closed oriented $3$-manifolds.
Given a real analytic function $f$ from $\mathbb{R}^4$ to $\mathbb{R}^2$ with isolated critical point at the origin, the link $L_f$ of the singularity is a real fibred knot in $\mathbb{S}^{3}$. From this singularities, we construct a family of real isolated suspension singularities from $\mathbb{R}^6$ to $\mathbb{R}^2$ such that its links are the total spaces of the $n$-branched cyclic coverings over the corresponding knots. In this way we obtain as links of singularities, $3$-manifolds that does not appear in the complex case, such as hyperbolic $3$-manifolds or the Hantzsche-Wendt manifold.
A myriad of irreducible symplectic 4-manifolds with abelian non-cyclic fundamental group is constructed. The botany of manifolds with finite non-cyclic fundamental groups is also studied.
We consider closed orientable 3-dimensional hyperbolic manifolds which are cyclic branched coverings of the 3-sphere, with branching set being a two-bridge knot (or link). We establish two-sided linear bounds depending on the order of the covering for the Matveev complexity of the covering manifold. The lower estimate uses the hyperbolic volume and results of Cao-Meyerhoff and Gueritaud-Futer (who recently improved previous work of Lackenby), while the upper estimate is based on an explicit triangulation, which also allows us to give a bound on the Delzant T-invariant of the fundamental group …
We study the cyclic presentations with relators of the form $x_ix_{i+m}x_{i+k}^{-1}$ and the groups they define. These "groups of Fibonacci type" were introduced by Johnson and Mawdesley and they generalize the Fibonacci groups $F(2,n)$ and the Sieradski groups $S(2,n)$. With the exception of two groups, we classify when these groups are fundamental groups of 3-manifolds, and it turns out that only Fibonacci, Sieradski, and cyclic groups arise. Using this classification, we completely classify the presentations that are spines of 3-manifolds, answering a question of Cavicchioli, Hegenbarth, an…
We discuss 3-manifolds which are cyclic coverings of the 3-sphere, branched over 2-bridge knots and links. Different descriptions of these manifolds are presented: polyhedral, Heegaard diagram, Dehn surgery and coloured graph constructions. Using these descriptions, we give presentations for their fundamental groups, which are cyclic presentations in the case of 2-bridge knots. The homology groups are given for a wide class of cases. Moreover, we prove that each singly-cyclic branched covering of a 2-bridge link is the composition of a meridian-cyclic branched covering of a determined link and…
The Brieskorn manifolds $B(p,q,r)$ are the $r$-fold cyclic coverings of the 3-sphere $S^{3}$ branched over the torus knot $T(p,q)$. The generalised Sieradski groups $S(m,p,q)$ are groups with $m$-cyclic pre\-sen\-tation $G_{m}(w)$, where defining word $w$ has a special form, depending of $p$ and $q$. In particular, $S(m,3,2) = G_{m}(w)$ is the group with $m$ generators $x_{1}, \ldots, x_{m}$ and $m$ defining relations $w(x_{i}, x_{i+1}, x_{i+2})=1$, where $w(x_{i}, x_{i+1}, x_{i+2}) = x_{i} x_{i+2} x_{i+1}^{-1}$. Presentations of $S(2n,3,2)$ in a certain form $G_{n}(w)$ were investigated by Ho…
In this article we give combinatorial criteria to decide whether a transitive cyclic combinatorial d-manifold can be generalized to an infinite family of such complexes, together with an explicit construction in the case that such a family exists. In addition, we substantially extend the classification of combinatorial 3-manifolds with transitive cyclic symmetry up to 22 vertices. Finally, a combination of these results is used to describe new infinite families of transitive cyclic combinatorial manifolds and in particular a family of neighborly combinatorial lens spaces of infinitely many dis…
This paper proves a theorem about Dehn surgery using a new theorem about PSL(2, C) character varieties. Confirming a conjecture of Boyer and Zhang, this paper shows that a small hyperbolic knot in a homotopy sphere having a non-trivial cyclic slope r has an incompressible surface with non-integer boundary slope strictly between r-1 and r+1. A corollary is that any small knot which has only integer boundary slopes has Property P. The proof uses connections between the topology of the complement of the knot, M, and the PSL(2, C) character variety of M that were discovered by Culler and Shalen. T…
We prove the infinitesimal rigidity of some geometrically infinite hyperbolic 4- and 5-manifolds. These examples arise as infinite cyclic coverings of finite-volume hyperbolic manifolds obtained by colouring right-angled polytopes, already described in the papers arXiv:2009.04997 [math.GT] and arXiv:2105.14795 [math.GT]. The 5-dimensional example is diffeomorphic to $N \times \mathbb{R}$ for some aspherical 4-manifold $N$ which does not admit any hyperbolic structure. To this purpose we develop a general strategy to study the infinitesimal rigidity of cyclic coverings of manifolds obtained by …
A surgery on a knot in 3-sphere is called SU(2)-cyclic if it gives a manifold whose fundamental group has no non-cyclic SU(2) representations. Using holonomy perturbations on the Chern-Simons functional, we prove that the distance of two SU(2)-cyclic surgery coefficients is bounded by the sum of the absolute values of their numerators. This is an analog of Culler-Gordon-Luecke-Shalen's cyclic surgery theorem.
We study the left-orderability of the fundamental groups of cyclic branched covers of links which admit co-oriented taut foliations. In particular we do this for cyclic branched covers of fibred knots in integer homology $3$-spheres and cyclic branched covers of closed braids. The latter allows us to complete the proof of the L-space conjecture for closed, connected, orientable, irreducible $3$-manifolds containing a genus $1$ fibred knot. We also prove that the universal abelian cover of a manifold obtained by generic Dehn surgery on a hyperbolic fibred knot in an integer homology $3$-sphere …
We show that standard cyclic actions on Brieskorn homology 3-spheres with non-empty fixed set do not extend smoothly to any contractible smooth 4-manifold it may bound. The quotient of any such extension would be an acyclic $4$-manifold with boundary a related Brieskorn homology sphere. We briefly discuss well known invariants of homology spheres that obstruct acyclic bounding 4-manifolds, and then use a method based on equivariant Yang-Mills moduli spaces to rule out extensions of the actions.
We prove the non-left-orderability of the fundamental group of the $n$-th fold cyclic branched cover of the pretzel knot $P(3,-3,-2k-1)$ for all integers $k$ and $n\ge 1$. These $3$-manifolds are $L$-spaces discovered by Issa and Turner.
In this note we derive an upper bound on the number of 2-spheres in the fixed point set of a smooth and homologically trivial cyclic group action of prime order on a simply-connected 4-manifold. This improves the a priori bound which is given by one half of the Euler characteristic of the 4-manifold. The result also shows that in some cases the 4-manifold does not admit such actions of a certain order at all or that any such action has to be pseudofree.
We use the equivariant Yang-Mills moduli space to investigate the relation between the singular set, isotropy representations at fixed points, and permutation modules realized by the induced action on homology for smooth group actions on certain 4-manifolds.
There are known infinite families of Brieskorn homology 3-spheres which can be realized as boundaries of smooth contractible 4-manifolds. In this paper we show that free periodic actions on these Brieskorn spheres do not extend smoothly over a contractible 4-manifold. We give a new infinite family of examples in which the actions extend locally linearly but not smoothly.
We classify Dehn surgeries on (p,q,r) pretzel knots resulting in a manifold M(s) having cyclic fundamental group and analyze those leading to a finite fundamental group. The proof uses the theory of cyclic and finite surgeries developed by Culler, Shalen, Boyer, and Zhang. In particular, Culler-Shalen seminorms play a central role.
Consider the cyclic group C_2 of order two acting by complex-conjugation on the unit circle S^1. The main result is that a finitely dominated manifold W of dimension > 4 admits a cocompact, free, discontinuous action by the infinite dihedral group D_\infty if and only if W is the infinite cyclic cover of a free C_2-manifold M such that M admits a C_2-equivariant manifold approximate fibration to S^1. The novelty in this setting is the existence of codimension-one, invariant submanifolds of M and W. Along the way, we develop an equivariant sucking principle for certain orthogonal actions of fin…
We show that, for $\varepsilon=\dfrac{1}{4000}$, any action of a finite cyclic group by $(1+\varepsilon)$-bilipschitz homeomorphisms on a closed 3-manifold is conjugated to a smooth action.
This paper uses Brin and Thickstun's theory of end reductions of non-compact 3-manifolds to study groups of covering translations of irreducible contractible open 3-manifolds W which are not homeomorphic to R^3. We associate to W an object S(W) called the simplicial complex of minimal R^2-irreducible end reductions of W. Whenever W covers another 3-manifold the group of covering translations is isomorphic to a fixed point free group of automorphisms of S(W). We apply this result to give uncountably many examples of R^2-irreducible such W which cover 3-manifolds with infinite cyclic fundamental…
We use Heegaard splittings to give a criterion for a tunnel number one knot manifold to be non-fibered and to have large cyclic covers. We also show that such a knot manifold (satisfying the criterion) admits infinitely many virtually Haken Dehn fillings. Using a computer, we apply this criterion to the 2 generator, non-fibered knot manifolds in the cusped Snappea census. For each such manifold M, we compute a number c(M), such that, for any n>c(M), the n-fold cyclic cover of M is large.
We give uniform, explicit, and simple face-pairing descriptions of all the branched cyclic covers of the 3-sphere, branched over two-bridge knots. Our method is to use the bi-twisted face-pairing constructions of Cannon, Floyd, and Parry; these examples show that the bi-twist construction is often efficient and natural. Finally, we give applications to computations of fundamental groups and homology of these branched cyclic covers.
It is proved that an arbitrary finite group acting locally linearly, homologically trivially, and pseudofreely on a closed, simply connected 4-manifold must in fact be cyclic and act semifreely, provided the second betti number of the manifold is at least three.
We obtain an explicit representation, as Dunwoody manifolds, of all cyclic branched coverings of torus knots of type $(p,mp\pm 1)$, with $p>1$ and $m>0$.
We produce infinite families of exotic actions of finite cyclic groups on simply connected smooth 4-manifolds with nontrivial Seiberg-Witten invariants.
In this paper, we prove a geometrization conjecture, every orientable smooth closed 3-manifold with finite fundamental group is homeomorphic to $S^3/G$ for some finite cyclic subgroup $G\subset {Isom}^+(S^3)$.
