Let G be any additive abelian group with cyclic torsion subgroup, and let A, B and C be finite subsets of G with cardinality n>0. We show that there is a numbering {a_i}_{i=1}^n of the elements of A, a numbering {b_i}_{i=1}^n of the elements of B and a numbering {c_i}_{i=1}^n of the elements of C, such that all the sums a_i+b_i+c_i (i=1,...,n) are distinct. Consequently, each subcube of the Latin cube formed by the Cayley addition table of Z/NZ contains a Latin transversal. This additive theorem can be further extended via restricted sumsets in a field.
In this note we find the optimal lower bound for the size of the sumsets $HA$ and $H\,\hat{}A$ over finite sets $H, A$ of nonnegative integers, where $HA = \bigcup_{h\in H} hA$ and $H\,\hat{}A = \bigcup_{h\in H} h\,\hat{}A$. We also find the underlying algebraic structure of the sets $A$ and $H$ for which the size of the sumsets $HA$ and $H\,\hat{}A$ is minimum.
Suppose that A is a subset of the integers {1,...,N} of density a. We provide a new proof of a result of Green which shows that A+A contains an arithmetic progression of length exp(ca(log N)^{1/2}) for some absolute c>0. Furthermore we improve the length of progression guaranteed in higher sumsets; for example we show that A+A+A contains a progression of length roughly N^{ca} improving on the previous best of N^{ca^{2+ε}}.
For finite subsets A_1,...,A_n of a field, their sumset is given by {a_1+...+a_n: a_1 in A_1,...,a_n in A_n}. In this paper we study various restricted sumsets of A_1,...,A_n with restrictions of the following forms: a_i-a_j not in S_{ij}, or alpha_ia_i not=alpha_ja_j, or a_i+b_i not=a_j+b_j (mod m_{ij}). Furthermore, we gain an insight into relations among recent results on this area obtained in quite different ways.
Suppose that $A$, $B$ and $S$ are non-empty subsets of a finite abelian group $G$. Then the generalized restricted sumset $$ A\stackrel{S}+B:=\{a+b:\,a\in A,\ b\in B,\ a-b\not\in S\} $$ contains at least $$ \min\{|A|+|B|-3|S|,p(G)\} $$ elements, where $p(G)$ is the least prime factor of $|G|$. Further, we also have $$ |A\stackrel{S}+B|\geq \min\{|A|+|B|-|S|-2,p(G)\}, $$ provided that both $|A|$ and $|B|$ are large with respect to $|S|$.
When defining the amount of additive structure on a set it is often convenient to consider certain sumsets; Calculating the cardinality of these sumsets can elucidate the set's underlying structure. We begin by investigating finite sets of perfect squares and associated sumsets. We reveal how arithmetic progressions efficiently reduce the cardinality of sumsets and provide estimates for the minimum size, taking advantage of the additive structure that arithmetic progressions provide. We then generalise the problem to arbitrary rings and achieve satisfactory estimates for the case of squares in…
Let $k\geqslant 3$ and let $A=\{0=a_{0}<a_{1}<\cdots<a_{k-1}\}$ with $\gcd(A)=1$. Freiman-Lev conjecture [V.F. Lev, Restricted set addition in groups, I. The classical setting, J. London Math. Soc. 62(2000), 27-40] is a well-known conjecture which related to restricted sumsets. Up to now, Freiman-Lev conjecture is open for all $a_{k-1}\geqslant 2k-2$. In this paper, we prove the Freiman-Lev conjecture is true for $a_{k-1}\geqslant 2k-2$ and $a_{k-2}<2k-4$. That is, Freiman-Lev conjecture is still open for the case $a_{k-1}\geqslant 2k-2$ and $a_{k-2}\geq 2k-4$.
We investigate sumset decompositions of quite general sets with restricted prime factors. We manage to handle certain sets, such as the smooth numbers, even though they have little sieve amenability, and conclude that these sets cannot be written as a ternary sumset. This proves a conjecture by Sárközy. We also clean up and sharpen existing results on sumset decompositions of the prime numbers.
Let A,B,S be finite subsets of an abelian group G. Suppose that the restricted sumset C={a+b: a in A, b in B, and a-b not in S} is nonempty and some c in C can be written as a+b with a in A and b in B in at most m ways. We show that if G is torsion-free or elementary abelian then |C|\geq |A|+|B|-|S| -m. We also prove that |C|\geq |A|+|B|-2|S|-m if the torsion subgroup of G is cyclic. In the case S={0} this provides an advance on a conjecture of Lev.
We consider restricted sumsets over field $F$. Let\begin{align*}C=\{a_1+\cdots+a_n:a_1\in A_1,\ldots,a_n\in A_n, a_i-a_j\notin S_{ij}\ \text{if}\ i\not=j\},\end{align*} where $S_{ij}(1\leqslant i\not=j\leqslant n)$ are finite subsets of $F$ with cardinality $m$, and $A_1,\ldots, A_n$ are finite nonempty subsets of $F$ with $|A_1|=\cdots=|A_n|=k$. Let $p(F)$ be the additive order of the identity of $F$. It is proved that $|C|\geqslant \min\{p(F),\ \ n(k-1)-mn(n-1)+1\}$ if $p(F)>mn$. This conclusion refines the result of Hou and Sun.
We study the distribution of singular and unimodular matrices in sumsets in matrix rings over finite fields. We apply these results to estimate the largest prime divisor of the determinants in sumsets in matrix rings over the integers.
Suppose that $A,B$ are two non-empty subsets of the finite nilpotent group $G$. If $A\not=B$, then the cardinality of the restricted sumset $$A\dotplus B={a+b: a\in A, b\in B, a\neq b} $$ is at least $$\min{p(G),|A|+|B|-2},$$ where $p(G)$ denotes the least prime factor of $|G|$.
In this paper, we develop Terence Tao's harmonic analysis method and apply it to restricted sumsets. The well known Cauchy-Davenport theorem asserts that if $A$ and $B$ are nonempty subsets of $Z/pZ$ with $p$ a prime, then $|A+B|\ge min{p,|A|+|B|-1}$, where $A+B={a+b: a\in A, b\in B}$. In 2005, Terence Tao gave a harmonic analysis proof of the Cauchy-Davenport theorem, by applying a new form of the uncertainty principle on Fourier transform. We modify Tao's method so that it can be used to prove the following extension of the Erdos-Heilbronn conjecture: If $A,B,S$ are nonempty subsets of $Z/pZ…
Let G be an additive abelian group whose finite subgroups are all cyclic. Let A_1,...,A_n (n>1) be finite subsets of G with cardinality k>0, and let b_1,...,b_n be pairwise distinct elements of G with odd order. We show that for every positive integer m\leq (k-1)/(n-1) there are more than (k-1)n-(m+1)n(n-1)/2 sets {a_1,...,a_n} such that a_1\in A_1,..., a_n\in A_n, and both a_i\not=a_j and ma_i+b_i\not=ma_j+b_j (or both ma_i\not=ma_j and a_i+b_i\not=a_j+b_j) for all 1\leq i<j\leq n. This extends a recent result of Dasgupta, Károlyi, Serra and Szegedy on Snevily's conjecture. Actually stronger …
We prove that the clique number of the Paley graph is at most $\sqrt{p/2} + 1$, and that any supposed additive decompositions of the set of quadratic residues can only come from co-Sidon sets.
In this paper we present a procedure which allows to transform a subset $A$ of $\mathbb{Z}_{p}$ into a set $ A'$ such that $ |2\hspace{0.15cm}\widehat{} A'|\leq|2\hspace{0.15cm}\widehat{} A | $, where $2\hspace{0.15cm}\widehat{} A$ is defined to be the set $\left\{a+b:a\neq b,\;a,b\in A\right\}$. From this result, we get some lower bounds for $ |2\hspace{0.15cm}\widehat{} A| $. Finally, we give some remarks related to the problem for which sets $A\subset \mathbb{Z}_{p}$ we have the equality $|2\hspace{0.15cm}\widehat{} A|=2|A|-1$.
We prove some new bounds for the size of the maximal dissociated subset of structured (having small sumset, large energy and so on) subsets A of an abelian group.
Let $d \geq 4$ be a natural number and let $A$ be a finite, non-empty subset of $\mathbb{R}^d$ such that $A$ is not contained in a translate of a hyperplane. In this setting, we show that \[ |A-A| \geq \bigg(2d - 2 + \frac{1}{d-1} \bigg) |A| - O_{d}(|A|^{1- δ}), \] for some absolute constant $δ>0$ that only depends on $d$. This provides a sharp main term, consequently answering questions of Ruzsa and Stanchescu up to an $O_{d}(|A|^{1- δ})$ error term. We also prove new lower bounds for restricted type difference sets and asymmetric sumsets in $\mathbb{R}^d$.
We study the extent to which sets A in Z/NZ, N prime, resemble sets of integers from the additive point of view (``up to Freiman isomorphism''). We give a direct proof of a result of Freiman, namely that if |A + A| < K|A| and |A| < c(K)N then A is Freiman isomorphic to a set of integers. Because we avoid appealing to Freiman's structure theorem, we get a reasonable bound: we can take c(K) > exp(-cK^2 log K). As a byproduct of our argument we obtain a sharpening of the second author's result on sets with small sumset in torsion groups. For example if A is a subset of F_2^n, and if |A + A| < K|A…
Let $A$ and $B$ be additive sets of $\mathbb{Z}_{2k}$, where $A$ has cardinality $k$ and $B=v.\complement A$ with $v\in\mathbb{Z}_{2k}^{\times}$. In this note some bounds for the cardinality of $A+B$ are obtained, using four different approaches. We also prove that in a special case the bound is not sharp and we can recover the whole group as a sumset.
Let n(2,k) denote the largest integer n for which there exists a set A of k nonnegative integers such that the sumset 2A contains {0,1,2,...,n-1}. A classical problem in additive number theory is to find an upper bound for n(2,k). In this paper it is proved that limsup_{k\to\infty} n(2,k)/k^2 \leq 0.4789.
The aim of this note is to exploit a new relationship between additive combinatorics and the geometry of monomial projective curves. We associate to a finite set of non-negative integers $A=\{a_1,\cdots, a_n\}$ a monomial projective curve $C_A\subset \mathbb P^{n-1}_{k}$ such that the Hilbert function of $C_A$ and the cardinalities of $sA:=\{a_{i_1}+\cdots+a_{i_s}\mid 1\le i_1\le \cdots \le i_s\le n\}$ agree. The singularities of $C_A$ determines the asymptotic behaviour of $|sA|$, equivalently the Hilbert polynomial of $C_A$, and the asymptotic structure of $sA$. We show that some additive in…
We investigate additive properties of sets $A,$ where $A=\{a_1,a_2,\ldots ,a_k\}$ is a monotone increasing set of real numbers, and the differences of consecutive elements are all distinct. It is known that $|A+B|\geq c|A||B|^{1/2}$ for any finite set of numbers $B.$ The bound is tight up to the constant multiplier. We give a new proof to this result using bounds on crossing numbers of geometric graphs. We construct examples showing the limits of possible improvements. In particular, we show that there are arbitrarily large sets with different consecutive differences and sub-quadratic sumset s…

Let A be a subset of the real line. We study the fractal dimensions of the k-fold iterated sumsets kA, defined as kA = A+...+A (k times). We show that for any non-decreasing sequence {a_k} taking values in [0,1], there exists a compact set A such that kA has Hausdorff dimension a_k for all k. We also show how to control various kinds of dimension simultaneously for families of iterated sumsets. These results are in stark contrast to the Plunnecke-Rusza inequalities in additive combinatorics. However, for lower box-counting dimension, the analogue of the Plunnecke-Rusza inequalities does hold.
The main results of this paper concern growth in sums of a $k$-convex function $f$. Firstly, we streamline the proof of a growth result for $f(A)$ where $A$ has small additive doubling, and improve the bound by removing logarithmic factors. The result yields an optimal bound for \[ |2^k f(A) - (2^k-1)f(A)|. \] We also generalise a recent result of Hanson, Roche-Newton and Senger, by proving that for any finite $A\subset \mathbb{R}$ \[ | 2^k f(sA-sA) - (2^k-1) f(sA-sA)| \gg_s |A|^{2s} \] where $s = \frac{k+1}{2}$. This allows us to prove that, given any natural number $s \in \mathbb{N}$, there …
For a finite abelian group $G$ with subsets $A$ and $B$, the sumset $AB$ is $\{ab \mid a\in A, b \in B\}$. A fundamental problem in additive combinatorics is to find a lower bound for the cardinality of $AB$ in terms of the cardinalities of $A$ and $B$. This article addresses the analogous problem for sequences in abelian groups and flags in field extensions. For a positive integer $n$, let $[n]$ denote the set $\{0,\dots,n-1\}$. To a finite abelian group $G$ of cardinality $n$ and an ordering $G = \{1=v_0,\dots,v_{n-1}\}$, associate the function $T \colon [n] \times [n] \rightarrow [n]$ defin…
In this paper we start to investigate a new body of questions in additive combinatorics. The fundamental Cauchy--Davenport theorem gives a lower bound on the size of a sumset A+B for subsets of the cyclic group Zp of order p (p prime), and this is just one example of a large family of results. Our aim in this paper is to investigate what happens if we restrict the number of elements of one set that we may use to form the sums. Here is the question we set out to answer: given two subsets, A and B, does B have a subset C of bounded size such that A+C is large, perhaps even comparable to the size…
We prove that if $G$ is an Abelian group and $A_1,\ldots,A_k \subseteq G$ satisfy $m A_i=G$ (the $m$-fold sumset), then $A_1+\ldots+A_k=G$ provided that $k \ge c_m \log n$. This generalizes a result of Alon, Linial, and Meshulam [Additive bases of vector spaces over prime fields. J. Combin. Theory Ser. A, 57(2):203--210, 1991] regarding the so called additive bases.
Let $G = (G,+)$ be an additive group. The sumset theory of Plünnecke and Ruzsa gives several relations between the size of sumsets $A+B$ of finite sets $A, B$, and related objects such as iterated sumsets $kA$ and difference sets $A-B$, while the inverse sumset theory of Freiman, Ruzsa, and others characterises those finite sets $A$ for which $A+A$ is small. In this paper we establish analogous results in which the finite set $A \subset G$ is replaced by a discrete random variable $X$ taking values in $G$, and the cardinality $|A|$ is replaced by the Shannon entropy $\mathrm{Ent}(X)$. In parti…
We extend two well-known results in additive number theory, Sárközy's theorem on square differences in dense sets and a theorem of Green on long arithmetic progressions in sumsets, to subsets of random sets of asymptotic density 0. Our proofs rely on a restriction-type Fourier analytic argument of Green and Green-Tao.
An additive 2-basis with range n is restricted if its largest element is n/2. Among the restricted 2-bases of given length k, the ones that have the greatest range are extremal restricted. We describe an algorithm that finds the extremal restricted 2-bases of a given length, and we list them for lengths up to k = 41.
We show that if a subset A of {1,...,N} does not contain any solutions to the equation x+y+z=3w with the variables not all equal, then A has size at most exp(-c(log N)^{1/7}) N, where c > 0 is some absolute constant. In view of Behrend's construction, this bound is of the right shape: the exponent 1/7 cannot be replaced by any constant larger than 1/2. We also establish a related result, which says that sumsets A+A+A contain long arithmetic progressions if A is a subset of {1,...,N}, or high-dimensional subspaces if A is a subset of a vector space over a finite field, even if A has density of …
When Do Restricted Sumsets Cover a Finite Abelian Group?
School of Mathematics, Southwest Jiaotong University(西南交通大学数学学院);School of Mathematical Sciences, University of Electronic Science and Technology of China(电子科技大学数学科学学院)
We prove a robust version of Freiman's $3k - 4$ theorem on the restricted sumset $A+_ΓB$, which applies when the doubling constant is at most $\tfrac{3+\sqrt{5}}{2}$ in general and at most $3$ in the special case when $A = -B$. As applications, we derive robust results with other types of assumptions on popular sums, and structure theorems for sets satisfying almost equalities in discrete and continuous versions of the Riesz-Sobolev inequality.
We adapt methods coming from additive combinatorics in groups to the study of linear span in associative unital algebras. In particular, we establish for these algebras analogues of Diderrich-Kneser's and Hamidoune's theorems on sumsets and Tao's theorem on sets of small doubling. In passing we classify the finite-dimensional algebras over infinite fields with finitely many subalgebras. These algebras play a crucial role in our linear version of Diderrich-Kneser's theorem. We also explain how the original theorems for groups we linearize can be easily deduced from our results applied to group …
We address the "sums of dilates problem" by looking for non-trivial lower bounds on sumsets of the form $k \cdot X + l \cdot X$, where $k$ and $l$ are non-zero integers and $X$ is a subset of a possibly non-abelian group $G$ (written additively). In particular, we investigate the extension of some results so far known only for the integers to the context of torsion-free or linearly orderable groups, either abelian or not.
